As we all know, using Windows 10 can be quite frustrating, especially if you updated recently and you didn’t get used to the new interface, with the new features, and of course with the new bugs.

In that matter, many users have reported HDMI not working problems after updating from Windows 7 (or from any other version of Windows) to Windows 10.

So, because of that, we have decided to help you out. How? Well, by showing you how to easily resolve your HDMI problem on your laptop.

As you will see, fixing this Windows 10 issue is quite easy as you only have to apply a few steps.

Of course, we will detail more methods, so that anyone can find a compatible troubleshooting solution within this step-by-step guide.

The HDMI port is used for connecting your Windows 10 based device with other gadgets such as a monitor, TV, Home Theatre, and so on.

If your HDMI port worked perfectly on your previous Windows version but after applying the Windows 10 update you can’t connect your device through the HDMI port, use the guidelines below.

How to fix Windows 10 HDMI not working?

1. Uninstall your Graphic Card drivers

  1. Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  2. Click on the Display Adapters section to expand it.
  3. Right-click the adapter and select Uninstall device.

The first thing to do when dealing with such problems is to uninstall the graphic drivers from your Windows 10 device. Follow the steps above to get it done.

Once you restart your PC, the system will automatically install a default driver.

2. Install the graphics card manually

The default driver is not the ideal way of using your graphics. So, after uninstalling the driver, go to your manufacturer’s official website and don’t download the driver from the graphic card maker’s website.

So once on the manufacturer website, search for your graphic card for the version of Windows you’re running and install the same on your computer in compatibility mode.

3. Install the drivers automatically

  1. Start Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button and selecting the app from the list.
  2. Expand the Display adapters category.
  3. Right-click the display adapter and select Update driver.
  4. Click on the first option, to search automatically for drivers.

By doing so, the system will automatically look for the correct drivers online for your graphics adapter.

Updating drivers can be very annoying, so we recommend you to use a dedicated tool to do it automatically. Thus, you will prevent file loss and even permanent damage to your computer.

The solution recommended below is very light and will automatically update and repair your drivers in a single action with just a few clicks.

To make sure that everything goes smoothly and avoid any kind of GPU driver errors, be sure to use a complete driver update assistant that will solve your problems with just a couple of clicks, and we strongly recommend DriverFix. Follow these easy steps to safely update your drivers:

  1. Download and install DriverFix.
  2. Launch the software.
  3. Wait for DriverFix to detect all your faulty drivers.
  4. The application will now show you all the drivers that have issues, and you just need to select the ones you’d liked fixed.
  5. Wait for the app to download and install the newest drivers.
  6. Restart your PC for the changes to take effect.

Keep you GPU on the peaks of their performance without worrying about its drivers.

  6. Reconnect the HDMI cable to your laptop and device.
  7. Power on the laptop and the HDMI device.

Sometimes, the simple procedure of restarting and reconnecting your device can get your HDMI port working again.

Now see if you can use your HDMI port and if the external HDMI device was identified by your laptop.

5. Configure your computer’s display settings

  1. Press the Windows key + P to start the PROJECT menu.
  2. You will see 4 possible Display settings:
    1. PC Screen Only – This option is when you want to display the image only on the screen of your laptop. If this is set, like in our example above, your HDMI video device was not detected.
    2. Duplicate – Try to use this option to duplicate the screen on your external HDMI device.
    3. Extended – You can also try this option to extend your screen to the external HDMI device.
    4. Second Screen Only – This option will force the image to be displayed only on the external device
  3. Choose one of the options with the exception of the first one.

If the display settings of your laptop are not set properly, you won’t be able to display the content from your screen to an external HDMI device.

HDMI output not working after Windows 8.1 update

Hey yawbus,

I would first like to welcome you to the HP Forums!

Thank you for sharing the troubleshooting steps that you have done already, and I will say you are correct that the issue is not with the HDMI Cable, or the 27" monitor. From what you have described in your post, it does sound as though the issue is with the drivers, possibly a conflict.

I would like to start of with installing the original video drivers that came with your notebook. I have included the document 'Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 😎'. Please follow through the steps for just reinstalling the original video drivers. After the original drivers have been installed, please restart your computer.

Now once the computer has restarted, you will need to install any updates that are available for both HP, and Windows. You can install both of these through the HP Support Assistant. I have included the document 'Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 😎'. Scroll down the page about halfway, and you should see an option for Updates and tune-ups. Please follow the options for HP updates, and Windows updates.

If you are still experiencing the same issue after the above troubleshooting steps, please let me know the full model number of your Envy TouchSmart 15. I have included the document 'Guide to finding your product number'. As well, please confirm the current version of Windows that you are running. If you need assistance in finding the version, I have included the document 'Which Windows operating system am I running?'.

Looking forward to your reply! Smiley Happy

Several issues were raised in various forums related to Windows 8.1 HDMI. In this article we are going to see location of hdmi driver windows 8 or 8.1 and if any solutions found to hdmi not working problems.

You can make use of Device Manager to install the latest graphic card drivers. Another issue is that audio is not heard through HDMI device like Smart TV or Soundbar. For this you need to make the right hdmi driver as your playback device.

HDMI Cable Connected to TV Not Recognized on Windows 8 or 8.1

First of all make sure you have the proper and correct drivers for your graphics card.

If not, install the drivers from the manufacturer site and then connect the HDMI cable to the TV. Then, the HDMI should automatically be detected.

@AudioSlave” on 7pmtech had the following to say regarding his HDMI problem.

I recently installed Windows 8 Pro WMC on my 64-bit laptop. When I try to connect HDMI cable on it to extend my monitor to a TV, my PC can’t detect it. There’s no other option to select other monitor. I had the updated driver for the monitor & graphics card. My graphics card is NVIDIA GT216. Could the graphics card be the problem? a lower capability for Windows 8? I don’t have this problem before when I’m still on Windows 7 Pro.

He managed to solve this problem by installing NVIDIA graphics driver through his PC’s manufacturer website.

He first downloaded the original NVIDIA graphics driver that comes with Windows 7 and then upgraded to Windows 8. Installed the driver and the cable is now working.

HDMI not appearing in PlayBack Devices List

Sometimes your HDMI appears in your Device Manager but is not visible in the playback devices list.

You may not listen to the HD music of your TV if this is the case. Instead, you may hear your PC or laptop sound.

One of the solutions is to install the latest “Graphics media Accelerator” driver from Intel.

What is HDMI

HDMI also known as High-Definition Multimedia Interface was primarily developed by 7 companies and its forum consists of 87 companies. Basically HDMI consists of a number of HDMI-standard cable connectors, each of which can be used for transferring any uncompressed TV or PC video format signals, including standard, enhanced, high definition and 3D video signals.

According to Wikipedia,

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a compact audio/video interface for transferring uncompressed video data and compressed/uncompressed digital audio data from an HDMI-compliant device (“the source device”) to a compatible digital audio device, computer monitor, video projector, or digital television. HDMI is a digital replacement for existing analog video standards.

As you can see above you just need to select the OS ( for eg. Windows 8.1 here) and the resulting graphic drivers will be listed below.

I found only 1 driver for Windows 8.1 as it is relatively new. Its basically a Chipset Device Software which is primarily for Intel 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 900 Series chipset.

But for Graphics Media Accelerator driver, you can download it for Windows 7 or Vista and then see if it works.

In future posts, I will try to detail some more HDMI issues in Windows 8 or 8.1 and their solutions. Please comment in the section below to show your appreciation of solving this problem.

I had got a laptop integrated NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M and Intel HD GPU, and everything worked fine on Windows 8. However, I am unable to connect it to a LG HDTV through the HDMI ports after upgrading to Windows 8.1 OS. I open the Devices > Second Screen and select Duplicate, the HDTV external Montior picks up no video signal.

Many users have reported the HDMI output not working issues after updating to Windows 8.1 from 8 with computers and those laptops, such as Asus NV550JV, Sony Vaio, Toshiba, HP Pavilion and etc. Trying high end HDMI cables and different televisions and projectors still can’t detect the external display. You could try the following tips to resolve the problem.

* Make sure you have installed the available firmware from Windows Updates, and the latest NVidia driver from your manufacturer website.
For HP devices, you could restore the drivers.
Type Recovery Manager from Start screen, and select it from the results. Click Hardware Driver Reinstallation > Next and then choose the original video drivers to install it.
* First it requires a wireless keyboard and mouse to make the control.
Open control panel, go to Appearance and Personalization > Display > Screen Resolution, and select the both monitors for display option.
You could also right click on the desktop to get the menu, and clcik the link with the graphics panel, then configure HDMI detection and the parameters with external monitor display resolution.
* If the above method are not working, you need to wait for the official solutions.

Connecting your computer directly to your Television is a fast, simple way to show what's on your computer directly on your TV, or even use it as a second display.HDMI

What is HDMI?

HDMI provides a near-universal standard for sending video and audio from one device to another. It's a single, relatively thin cable that doesn't get tangled as easily as previous standards, and has full support for high-definition images. As well, it has been designed to be bi-directional, meaning the display will talk to your device or computer, and tell it what resolutions it can support, what color depth is provided, and a myriad of other features your device can use.

Unlike previous standards, HDMI provides a way for both audio and video to be sent by one cable, greatly simplifying setup of home theater equipment, or, when you want to connect your computer to your Television to watch a streaming movie, show family snapshots, or show a presentation at work.

1 Determine the Connection Type for the Computer

For the most part, HDMI "Just Works", meaning it's a simple cable from one device to your display or television, and that's all there is to do!

However, some device manufacturers, especially smaller devices and computers, use a different size HDMI connector, or a different type of connection that, while compatible, requires special cables.

HDMI Connector Types

There are three main types of HDMI connectors available, and they are purely based on size of the devices.

StandardThis is the connector you will see most often. This is the type of connector on the back of modern television sets. It's about 1/2 an inch wide.HDMI Type A connector and cableMiniThis connection is intended for small, portable devices. Some smaller laptops have chosen this style of connector. You will need a special cable to connect to a standard HDMI port.HDMI C connector and cableMicroThis connection is intended for portable devices. It's most frequently found on digital cameras and camcorders, but a few smaller laptops and single-board computers have chosen this connector type. You will need a special cable to connect to a Standard HDMI port.HDMI D connector and cable

Other Connection Types

Along with HDMI, there are a large number of other types of connections available and in use by computers right now. Many are compatible with a simple cable or adapter, while others require converters.

DisplayPortDisplayPortIn most cases, DisplayPort is easily adaptable to HDMI. Cables are simple, and sold online and in larger computer-related stores.DVIDVIOne of the first digital formats available to computers to talk to monitors. Rare on laptops, but somewhat prevalent on desktops. Easily adapted to HDMI either through an adapter or a cable.VGAVGAWhile encountered regularly, VGA is not a digital format; it's analog. You will need special converter box.RCAComponent videoRarely encountered on computers, but found commonly on many other components. Again, this is an analog format, and will require a special converter box.Thunderbolt 2Thunderbolt 2Used mostly by Apple Mac, the Thunderbolt port requires an adapter or dongle to use an HDMI cable.Thunderbolt 3Thunderbolt 3Again, used by Apple Mac, and requires an adapter or dongle to connect to HDMI.

2 Connect the Computer to the TV

3 Detect and Identify Computer Displays

4 Set Display Preferences

Now that the computer has detected multiple displays, the next step is to choose how you would like the computer to handle the second display.

  1. Select the display that represents the television from the Display menu.
    Monitors Highlighted
  2. Scroll down to the Multiple displays heading. From here, you can choose how you would like the television display to function.
    Display function menu highlighted
There are two settings available for multiple displays within Windows:
Duplicate desktopChoosing to duplicate the desktop will display the exact same image on both screens. Duplicating is most commonly used for presentations, where the goal is to share what's on your screen to a group or room full of people.Extend desktop to this displayChoosing to extend the desktop expands the work area across both displays. Extending is most commonly used to get more workspace, allowing you to display different things on each screen, such as multiple programs, web browsers, etc.
  3. If you chose to Duplicate desktop, the picture on your computer screen will be displayed on your television, and you're all set. If you chose to Extend desktop, we recommend taking a look at the following tips that will help you get the best experience while using your television as a second display.

Tips for Extending the Desktop

  • When your desktop is expanded across multiple displays, choosing a "primary" display is necessary. Typically, the primary display will contain the taskbar, while additional displays will not by default. Under the Multiple displays header, you can designate the primary display by checking the Make this my main display box.
    Main Display checkbox
  • Letting Windows know about the position of the second display is also important. By default, Windows assumes the second display is to the right of your primary display. However, if the second display is actually off to the left, or perhaps above your primary display within the room you're seated in, dragging windows onto that secondary display will be awkward. You can click and drag each display within the display window into a position that most resembles their current physical location. Doing this will make dragging windows into position feel more natural.
Arrows on monitors indicating you can drag them with your mouse

Monitors can be positioned both vertically and horizontally.

  • Depending on how your secondary display is physically set up, you may want to choose a different Orientation for that display. Landscape is the default orientation for all displays,  while Portrait will orient things vertically on-screen.
    Orientation menu highlighted
  • Depending on the size of the television that was connected to your computer, and how far away from it you are sitting, you may not be happy with the size of text and other items on-screen. Under the Scale and layout heading, you can choose a zoom level for items on the screen. This will make items appear a bit larger and will be easier to read on screens that are much larger than your computer's screen.
    Scaling set to 100%
