ESL Personal Information Activity - Reading, Matching, Listening and Speaking - Beginner (A1) - 15 minutes

Here is a giving basic personal information activity to help beginners practice asking and answering personal information questions about names and addresses. The students in one group each have an identity card, showing their name and address. The students in the other group are postal workers and each have a letter card. Their task is to deliver their letter to the name and address written on their card. All the names and addresses are very similar so the postal workers need to listen and check the information carefully. The students with the identity cards sit spread out across the classroom and all the postal workers stand up. The postal workers then go around the class asking for the names and addresses of the seated students until they find the person with a matching name and address. When this happens, the postal worker gives the student the letter. When all the postal workers have delivered their letters, the students swap roles and repeat the activity.

First Class Interview and Introduction

This free asking for and giving personal information activity is ideal for the first day of class. In the activity, students create personal information questions to ask a new classmate. The students then interview the classmate and use the information to introduce them to the class. Working alone, students read the five interview questions on the worksheet and create five more personal information questions of their own to ask a partner. In pairs, students then take it in turns to ask their partner the questions on the worksheet and note down their answers in the spaces provided. Students use their partner's answers to complete an introductory text on the worksheet. Students also create five sentences of their own using the third-person singular. Next, the pairs introduce their partner to the class by reading the text aloud. As the other students listen to the introductions, they write down follow-up questions they would like to ask the person being introduced. The students then ask these questions at the end of each introduction.

In this giving personal information speaking activity, students ask and answer basic personal information questions in order to complete a chart with personal details. Students take on the identity of the person on their card and complete their personal details in the corresponding place in the chart. The chart also shows one piece of information for the other identities. The students go round the class and complete the missing personal details for the other identities by asking one another personal information questions. Students begin by asking yes/no questions to find out which information in the chart corresponds to the person they are speaking with, e.g. 'Are you 26?' When a classmate replies 'yes', the student asks personal information questions to complete the other information about the person's identity, e.g. 'What's your name?' When both students have completed their partner's personal information, they move on to speak to someone else. This continues until the students have completed the chart.
