Looking to make an Orc DK but not sure about a good name for it. Anyone know of any good Orc names I could try and use if they are not taken.

Orc names, as you’ve probably observed in your travels, are usually rough-sounding. Feminine names like Gashnakh, Lurgush, and Shel, and masculine names like Brugo, Bashnag, and Ramolg are just a few examples. I couldn’t find really anything about the reasoning behind first names, but I did observe a lot of common prefixes and suffixes:

Prefixes

  • Bo-, Ba-, Bu-, Du-
  • Ga-, Gash-, Gat-
  • Gh-, Ghor-
  • Kha-
  • Og-, Ogr-, Ol-
  • Sha-, Sna-
  • Ag-, Og-, Ug-
  • Lam-
  • Um-, Ur-, Ug-, Un-, Ul-
  • Ya-

Suffixes

  • -uk, -ak, -ok (there does not exist an -ik)
  • -ul, -ol, -el, -il (no -al)
  • -ag, -og, -ug (no -ig)
  • -ur, -ar, -ir (no -er)
  • -um, -am (no -em)
  • -ash, -ush, -esh, -ish, -osh
  • -a, -ah
  • -kh

There doesn’t seem to be a trend determining gender in the first names, though I did find only female “Lam-”s and a lot more male “Ya-”s. You could probably find any combination of those above in both genders.

Surnames, however, do determine gender. It’s simple: If male, the surname starts with “gro-” and if female, with “gra-.” The prefix is followed by the father’s name if male, or the mother’s name if female. So, an example would be  Yargol gro-Bashnag: aka Yargol, son of Bashnag.

In special cases, like if a boy is born to an unknown father, the boy’s surname becomes his mother’s name. There are also Orcs with surnames of the stronghold in which they were born.

There is a lot more variation to Orc names than the short summary I gave. For a list of Orsimer names, check out uesp.

Orc Family Names[edit]

Orc family names are usually (but not always) prefixed depending on gender: "gro-" for males, and "gra-" for females. (In a few cases in Morrowind, there are male Orcs with the feminine "gra-" prefix, or a third prefix "gor-"; and in Online female Orcs with the male "gro-" prefix. ) The prefix is usually followed by the name of the Orc's clan or the stronghold where they were born.[1] Some family names may not have a prefix at all, for example the Gilgar family.

Named after a place[edit]

Can someone explain the reasoning behind thesetwo edits? Is it just because of the name of Lash gra-Dushnikh, or is there some dialogue referencing it? -- Kertaw48 (talk) , 4 March (GMT)

Only example I can think of. Not sure how widespread the phenomenon is, especially since nobody else in her family even has a given last name at all. They may have given her the name specifically as a clue so that you'll look into it a bit more, though I've always gotten the quest from Gharol instead. Anyhow, seems speculative to me. — TheRealLurlock (talk) , 4 March (GMT)

Gro- and Gra-[edit]

Should I make a note about the usage of Gro- or Gra- before an Orc's family name to indicate gender? I just noticed that and thought the wiki needed to know. Piwah (talk) , 9 June (GMT)

It's already mentioned here. -- SarthesAraiTalk , 9 June (GMT)

Ghunzul[edit]

Should we add the name of his 7 ancestors to the list. I think we should put their names under the Skyrim section, but have a star saying that the peoples are found in lore material, not in the game itself. PS the names are found on Ghunzul's Skyrim page. --Kharwog , 13 June

There is (or should be) a lore section under the names. Jeancey (talk) , 14 June (GMT)
Yeah, they're already there. I added them a while back in the "Male Orc Names" Lore section. --Jimeee (talk) , 14 June (GMT)
Oh, I didn't see! Thx -- Kharwog , 14 June

Sister?[edit]

I'm not convinced that Sister Shamuk's first name is "Sister". Shouldn't she be listed under "Shamuk" instead? baratron (talk) , 29 March (UTC)

I agree. Brother Gerard is listed on the Breton name page as "Gerard". Sister Shamuk should be the same. NicholasLeeDust , 29 March (UTC)
Oops, yes, that was just me copy-and-pasting it and forgetting to link it in a way that it wouldn't automatically take the first word in the name. Fixed it. ~ Alarra(talk) , 30 March (UTC)

Listing examples of atypical surname prefixes for gender[edit]

I know these are widely considered simple typos, but I still intend to collate all orc names with atypical surname prefixes for their gender, for the benefit of my own fannish worldbuilding. I think this list could helpfully be included into the main page as well, if only as an interesting collection of errata? I don't know the policy well enough to make that call unaided, though.
This is everyone I could find, although (for instance) Luktuv gro-Malog doesn't have her own page, and I only found the Lore page on which she was included by means of searches that are high-noise, low-signal, so I could be missing other more obscure figures.
