Top 3 uses of end crystals in Minecraft

End dimension is one of the most dangerous places to travel to in Minecraft survival. On the center island of the End dimension, ten tall obsidian pillars are naturally generated with end crystals on top of them.

The end crystal restores the Ender dragon's health points. Therefore, players should destroy them before attacking the dragon. They must be careful when destroying it because the crystal will cause an explosion immediately after breaking.

The end crystal does not drop as an item after it breaks, but players can still craft it on a crafting table using seven glass blocks, one eye of ender, and one ghast tear. It can only be placed on bedrock or obsidian blocks.

Uses of end crystals in Minecraft

3) Killing players and mobs

Veteran PvP Minecraft players often use end crystals on servers to kill their opponents. Beginners or casual players will have to practice a bit to master this advanced technique. Placing the obsidian and the end crystal fast enough is hard, but having a hotkey for those two items can make it a lot easier.

End crystals can also be used to kill strong mobs like the Wither easily. The best way to kill a wither is to spawn it in the bedrock level, place the end crystals on the bedrock blocks next to the wither, and then hit the end crystals to explode.

2) Mining ancient debris

An end crystal in the Nether world (Image via Minecraft)

Minecraft has a lot of ores, one of which is ancient debris. It is one of the rarest ores in the game and is the only source of Netherite for players. Minecrafters can find it in the Nether world between Y level 8 and 119, commonly at 15.

Ancient debris has high blast resistance and can withstand explosions from TNT blocks and even end crystals. Therefore, players can use them in the Nether world to explode useless blocks like netherracks and reveal the hidden ancient debris.

1) Respawn the Ender dragon

Ender dragon is a ferocious boss mob that spawns in the end dimension. When in a 35 block radius, the end crystal will start healing the Ender dragon for one health point every half second. The Ender dragon spawns only once naturally, and after the player has killed it, they can respawn it as many times as they want using end crystals.

Players need to place one end crystal on each flat side of the end exit portal to do this. The original end crystal will be respawned on the obsidian pillars, and the Ender dragon will be resurrected.

5 facts players likely didn't know about end crystals in Minecraft

Minecraft is full of many explosives, some craftable and others being mobs. End crystals are one such craftable explosive, initially found in the end dimension.

When players enter the end dimension to fight the Ender Dragon, they must first take out all the end crystals on top of the large towers. These end crystals are responsible for healing the Ender Dragon during the fight, and when players take it out, the mob can no longer heal itself.

End crystals explode with around the same force as a charged creeper, so players should be very well protected when dealing with them. They will most definitely be knocked out of the large obsidian pillars in the end, if they try to take out the end crystals manually. Gamers should always try to destroy end crystals from afar using a bow and arrow, snowballs, or other methods.

Most players know this, but here are some facts that they might not necessarily know about these elusive crystals.

Five facts players about Minecraft end crystals players might not know

#1 - Respawning the Ender Dragon

Minecraft respawning Ender Dragon (Image via gamingstackexchange)

End crystals have many uses. One of them is respawning the Ender Dragon. If a player places four end crystals on each side of an end portal, then the Ender Dragon will respawn.

This is currently the only way to respawn the Ender Dragon in the game, making end crystals a very valuable resource.

#2 - Crafting

In Minecraft Java Edition 1.9 the developers of the game added an option to craft end crystals. This made respawning the Ender Dragon completely possible in Minecraft, and instantly became a task for experienced players.

To craft an end crystal, the player needs seven glass blocks, an eye of the ender, and ghast tear. The latter two items are relatively complicated to obtain in Minecraft, which means end crystals can be used as a sign of status for some players.

#3 - 2b2t combat

2b2t end crystal (Image via Reddit)

For those unfamiliar, 2b2t is the most popular anarchy server in Minecraft. On this insane server, players are often too advanced to have standard sword fights or use traditional PVP methods. Players have resorted to using end-crystal combat against each other in the game.

End crystals can be placed on both bedrock and obsidian, so players will often place end crystals along the obsidian highways and blocks that fill the server.

#4 - Entity status

Lots of end crystals (Image via YouTube)

End crystals are not actually a block in Minecraft. They are a sudo-block tile entity, and can only be found naturally in the end. These entities also have a hitbox and health status. Their health is essentially zero; however, it takes very little to make an end crystal explode.

#5 - Galactic alphabet

Also Read

Minecraft's alphabet (Image via planetminecraft)

The end crystal's design is surely an interesting one. It consists of a floating spherical figure, with purple coloring and a seeming glass casing around it. On the purple part of the end crystal though, players can see characters of the Galactic alphabet. It's a mystery as to if these letterings have any deeper meaning.

1. Open the Crafting Menu

First, open your crafting table so that you have the 3x3 crafting grid that looks like this:

3x3 crafting area

2. Add Items to make an End Crystal

In the crafting menu, you should see a crafting area that is made up of a 3x3 crafting grid. To make an end crystal, place 1 eye of ender, 1 ghast tear and 7 glass in the 3x3 crafting grid.

When making an end crystal, it is important that the items are placed in the exact pattern as the image below. In the first row, there should be 3 glass. In the second row, there should be 1 glass in the first box, 1 eye of ender in the second box and 1 glass in the third box. In the third row, there should be 1 glass in the first box, 1 ghast tear in the second box and 1 glass in the third box. This is the Minecraft crafting recipe for an end crystal.

End Crystal

An end crystal is both an item and an entity found in the End.

Spawning[]

Natural generation[]

An end crystal is found atop each obsidian pillar on the central island of the End, each on top of a piece of bedrock. There are 10 end crystals in total, of which two of them are protected in "cages" of iron bars. All end crystals respawn one after another as the respawning process of the ender dragon starts.

Obtaining[]

Crafting[]

Usage[]

Healing the ender dragon[]

Their primary purpose is to recharge the health of the ender dragon, who gains a charge from the nearest crystal within a cuboid extending 32 blocks from the dragon in all directions. The dragon is healed 1♥ each half-second. If multiple ender dragons are spawned, an end crystal can affect multiple dragons at the same time. The healing beam is neither obstructed nor is its power diminished by entities or blocks.

Respawning the ender dragon[]

As items, end crystals may be placed on bedrock and obsidian, if the two blocks above the bedrock or obsidian block are air or replaceable blocks and no other entities intersect the area. If four are placed on the end exit portal, one on each of the flat sides, the crystals respawn the original end crystals on the obsidian pillars, as well as resurrect the dragon itself, before exploding. The top of each pillar also explodes, destroying any player-placed blocks. This happens even if TNT explosions are turned off in settings.

If the exit portal is ever broken for any reason, end crystals can still be placed on obsidian blocks with the same location as the exit portal.

Explosions[]

End crystals explode when attacked or damaged in most ways, even by attacks that normally do zero damage. They are not affected by exploding fireworks, and if damaged by an explosion, they disappear instead of exploding.‌[Java Edition only] The end crystal's explosion has an explosion strength of 6, the same as a charged creeper. The end crystal's fire often remains after the crystal explodes. Any ender dragon charging from the crystal when it is destroyed takes 10♥♥♥♥♥ damage.

Although an ender dragon damages most blocks and entities in its path, it cannot destroy end crystals simply by going near them.

Beams[]

The end crystal naturally shoots a beam at the ender dragon and heals it when the dragon is within range. This beam can be manually created using the command . The beam can be pointed in any direction, allowing it to mark locations or objects.

Properties[]

The base appears to be made of bedrock, with a crystal hovering over it. While in the End, a crystal continually generates fire at its current position, one block above the base (directly on top of the block the base is embedded in), replacing any other block at that location. This fire is capable of spreading.

An end crystal can damage (or kill) a player wearing netherite armor if close enough.

The end crystal entity is not solid and can be walked through freely. End crystals can be pushed by pistons, but they explode if moved while on fire. Because fire is checked only when an entity moves, end crystals do not normally take damage from their own fire unless moved.

Trivia[]

  • According to Jeb, the reason behind the current crafting recipe using glass as opposed to chorus fruit or any materials introduced in 1.9 is as a means for players to craft end crystals in older worlds that the dragon has already been killed in.[1]
  • Unlike the similarly-explosive TNT, normally hitting an end crystal makes it explode. However, they can be removed safely if they're immersed in water first.
  • A historical rendition of the beacon block featured an animated entity within it, which resembled a yellow miniaturized end crystal. The bedrock platform of the end crystal entity would also render below the beacon, though this would normally be hidden within the block below.
  • Using a piston to push an end crystal's fire into an end portal block deletes the end portal block. However, natural portal blocks regenerate if the end crystal is moved.
  • The symbols on the end crystal layout if put in the correct order spell out Mojang, the company behind Minecraft.[2][more information needed]

Minecraft: How To Make Your Own End Crystal

If you've been to the End in Minecraft, then you've seen an end crystal. These floating objects appear in pillars in the End and are important during your fight with the Ender Dragon. In addition to naturally appearing in the End, you can make your own end crystal with just a few items.

Related: Minecraft: Finding And Conquering A Stronghold

In this guide, we are going to go over how to make your own end crystal, as well as the requirements to place it. This item can be used to respawn the Ender Dragon, as well as for decoration. First, let's go over what end crystals do.

What Are End Crystals?

As mentioned above, end crystals appear in the End. When you enter through the End Portal, you will see a floating island with pillars in a circle. Each of these pillars will have an end crystal on top of one block of bedrock. These crystals will connect to the Ender Dragon, restoring its HP. Fortunately, you do not need to kill the Ender Dragon to get your own end crystal.

Crafting An End Crystal

To make an end crystal, you will need the following materials.

  • 1 Eye of Ender
  • 1 Ghast Tear
  • 7 Glass Blocks

Eyes of ender are crafted from ender pearls and blaze powder. Ender pearls drop from Endermen, which can be found in the End, the Nether, and the overworld. Alternatively, you can set up an Enderman farm to get a lot of ender pearls. Ender pearls will also be available to purchase from expert-level Cleric villagers for five emeralds.

Blaze powder is crafted from blaze rods, which will drop from Blazes that spawn in Nether Fortresses. They shoot fire and can fly, so they are a bit annoying to kill. Thankfully, Blaze spawners are common in the fortresses, so you will be able to gather blaze rods pretty quickly. You can craft two blaze powders from one blaze rod.

Ghast tears will drop from Ghasts, which also spawn in the Nether. Ghasts are giant white mobs that float around, spitting explosive fireballs. You can find them in Nether Wastes, a Soul Sand Valley, and Basalt Deltas.

Overall, once you have access to the Nether, you will be able to gather all the resources to make your own end crystal.

Where To Place End Crystals

End crystals can only be placed on bedrock or obsidian. Since you can't freely place bedrock, you will probably be building an obsidian pedestal for your end crystal if you want to use it as decoration.

In addition to placing end crystals, you will need four to respawn the Ender Dragon. In the center of the island where the Ender Dragon originally was, you can find the exit portal made out of bedrock; it will have four long sides. Placing one end crystal on the center of each side will resurrect the Ender Dragon, as well as respawn the end crystals on the pillars.

Removing any end crystal regardless of its location will cause an explosion. If you do want to use it for decoration, keep this in mind.

Ender Crystal

An Ender Crystal is an item found in The Endthat heals the Ender Dragonif the dragon flies close enough. Without them, Ender Dragons cannot be healed again, making it vulnerable to attack.

Overview

Appearance

The crystal appears to have a pink core trapped in glass, which moves around. It stands on top of a piece of bedrock.

Abilities

The Ender Crystals in the End have the ability to heal the Ender Dragon if it takes damage from what is attacking it. When an ender crystal is hit, it will explode, causing damage to nearby blocks, mobs, players, and possibly the dragon itself if the crystal being destroyed is currently healing it.

Appearances

  • In "A Block and a Hard Place", Jesse learns from Soren that the Order destroyed the ender crystals to defeat the ender dragon. However, near the enchanted book inside Ivor's Cottage, there are four functioning ender crystals present. Soren later reveals that the Order didn't destroy the crystals during their battle with the Ender Dragon.

Trivia

  • Ender crystals can be crafted by putting an eye of ender in the middle, a ghast tear under the eye and glass around every empty space. They can be used to respawn the Ender Dragon.
  • Ender crystals spawn naturally in the End atop the obsidian pillars.
  • It is impossible to move ender crystals, as trying to mine them will cause them to explode. Therefore, it is unknown how Ivor moved the crystals from the End.
  • There are around eight ender crystals that spawn naturally in the End, not just four.

Minecraft End Crystals

The End Crystals that generate along with the Ender Dragon will heal the dragon when the dragon flies near them. The crystal fires a beam that heals the dragon for 1 health point per second. This cannot be blocked by any blocks and therefore, they need to be destroyed to effectively defeat the Ender Dragon.

It can also be used to respawn the Ender dragon by placing 4 of them on each side on the Exit Portal in the End. This sets in motion the resurrection of the original End Crystals on top of the towers and the Ender Dragon respawning.
