Guides

Account migration is an upcoming Java Edition update announced by the Minecraft developers on October 21, 2020, where all Mojang accounts will be migrated to Microsoft accounts beginning early 2021.

This process does not apply to Bedrock Edition since players already have a Microsoft account.

Details

Mojang has stated that this process will occur in "waves". Players will receive an email to the email address tied to their Mojang account with more information. Once this process starts, new Java Edition accounts will be registered via Microsoft accounts.

The benefits of migration Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts include support for two-factor authentication, unification of Minecraft games under one account (i.e. a user's purchase of Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons will be unified under the same account), improved parental controls, and chat/invitation blocking.

The migration is mandatory for all Java Edition accounts, with the only thing changing is the way accounts are registered. Players will receive a free cape upon completing the migration.

If you mean to go through the minecraft.net website and click on "get Minecraft," I am afraid this is something I cannot do, if I were to go through "buy Minecraft," I am met with a screen asking me to input my credit card details.

Really? But you can reinstall it, putting the purchase number you get on your email when you did purchase it. You have it purchased, already, right?

Yes Minecraft is already purchased but I am afraid you will have to put up with my stupidity as I removed many emails probably including the purchase email as when I looked through all of the emails I did not find this purchase email, are there any other ways I can provide evidence of purchase? If not I will pay for my stupidity by repurchasing Minecraft java edition.

Don't worry, mate, haha it happens. So, to confirm the purchase, I believe you could try through Mojang's support there:

https://help.minecraft.net/hc/en-us/requests/new

Ask them if it's possible for them to send you another confirmation, you will have to just inform the account that you purchase with.

Hello, is there a way I can change my minecraft java edition i purchased a few years ago to a microsoft version rather than having to buy another copy? At the time Minecraft was not available through the Microsoft store. I'd really like to not have to purchase another copy to use on a PC.

We have minecraft of android logging in with a microsoft account and it would be great if we could use it and play the same game between platforms / friends that we can't do with Java edition.

When will mojang accounts become Microsoft accounts?

There was a rumor saying it would be on the 18th on Twitter by someone named minecraft news, but the rumor has been debunked and they deleted the posts.

If anyone knows anything, i would be glad to know. I understand that new players who buy mc with their microsoft account do not need the migration, my mc account was bought back in the early months of 2020 before the migration was announced on youtube and twitter, if anyone has some news about the date,  like next month, or even when 1.17 is released, it would be nice to have an idea.

What does this mean?

So the notification will show up on the launcher or ingame

I tried migrating my account csz im scared my account will be deleted for good, i dont know why is the notification not showing up, please tell me when can i REALLY migrate, im very scared csz i dont want my account to be deleted, i just want to have my account peacefully, i am very worried right now, i might not nitce it so im very scared if i didnt migrate my acc on time, i have a microsoft minecraft account, but i havent purchased the java edition for ny microsoft account, my parents wont buy it for me csz of course, its expensive, please help im very scared, i just wanna play minecraft

Your account won't be deleted, according to an article the date was leaked, it supposedly starts on the 12th this month, and ends sometime in 2022.

I don't want to get your hope high as the announcement has not been posted yet.

And if you got minecraft this year, you should be fine, as you're probably already using a microsoft account for minecraft.

Some players have already had the option to transfer their Mojang account. What is worth knowing about the upcoming changes?

Some time ago, the migration of Minecraft Premium accounts began, which could be found out from the developers at the end of 2020. Players who transfer their accounts will use the Microsoft Store to play Minecraft Java.

The main motives are to increase account security, however, another big argument is that fans will have all their Minecraft installations in one place.

What is worth knowing about migration at the moment?

The migration began on June 24, and notifications to transfer their account were received by a small number of players who purchased the game before December 10, 2020. Information on whether the selected account is suitable for migration can be found at the very bottom of the game launcher window.

We have opened the migration for a limited number of players. We’ll notify you on your Minecraft.net profile page and Minecraft lanucher when your account is ready for migration. If you don’t see the account migration notification, you haven’t been invited yet.

The developers have announced that the migration option will be granted to players in waves as they want to avoid server overload that could result from the huge amount of visitors to the site in an instant. At the moment, it is not known when the next batch of players will be able to transfer their account, but it is worth following the information at the bottom of the screenshot above.

There are entries on the web from players who have already had the opportunity to move to a Microsoft account and show what the choice of a new cape looks like, which everyone who migrates gets.

It is worth knowing that the migration will be mandatory and players who do not assign their Mojang account to a Microsoft account will no longer be able to play Minecraft. Everyone will also receive the cape shown in the screenshot above.

Even though the changes are quite controversial among the game community, as many players do not feel the need to transfer their accounts, two-factor authentication will certainly contribute to better protection. On popular auction sites, there are a lot of ads regarding accounts where you cannot change your e-mail address.

How to migrate Minecraft account from Mojang to Microsoft

With the purchase of Mojang and their hit sandbox game Minecraft, Microsoft made a big move. The tech company is one of the biggest and has added one of the most popular games in history to its catalog. In doing so, it became linked with Xbox and so now, Mojang accounts are linked to Microsoft accounts.

Players have to migrate their accounts to Microsoft before they become inactive and require players to create new Microsoft accounts, which is less than ideal. Here's how to migrate the account.

Migrating a Minecraft account to Microsoft

According to Mojang,

"Migrating from Mojang to Microsoft accounts is mandatory. If you don't make the move, in several months you won't be able to log in anymore – which means you won't be able to play either. ... You'll receive a cool reward once you've logged in with your Microsoft account: a special cape!"

This means that all players will have to join Microsoft in order to continue playing. Regardless of the platform, whether it's an iPhone, a Nintendo Switch or a PlayStation 5, all players will have Microsoft accounts.

Even Nintendo Switch Minecraft players will have to use a Microsoft account. Image via Minecraft

Players can follow these steps to migrate their account.

  1. Log into Minecraft account.
  2. Find the "It's Your Turn To Move" prompt.
  3. Click "Move my Account".
  4. Verify account with a code sent to the email attached to the Mojang account.
  5. Enter the code and click "Submit and Start Migration".
  6. A new email and password will be needed. A school or work email will not work.
  7. Existing Microsoft accounts can be used here by clicking "Existing Microsoft Account" instead of creating a new one.
  8. Confirm date of birth and country.
  9. Create a gamertag and select a profile picture.
  10. The final screen will have a "Let's Move" button that needs to be clicked.

After these steps are completed, Minecraft players will have officially migrated their Mojang accounts to Microsoft and will be able to play and receive the free cape.

Frequently asked questions

I forgot which email I used to create my Microsoft account

If you’ve forgotten which email you used to create your Microsoft account for migration, you’ll need to speak with Microsoft support to recover the email address used to sign up. To do so, select Contact us on this page.

Why is the date of birth auto-filling in the Microsoft account sign-up form?

This information is automatically pulled from your Mojang account. If the date of birth on your Mojang account was incorrect, you can fix it during this step.

Can I use one Microsoft account for multiple Java Mojang accounts?

No, Microsoft accounts can only link to one Mojang account. Multiple Java Mojang accounts need to be migrated to separate Microsoft accounts.

Why can't I use my work or school email address for my MSA?

Microsoft accounts can’t be created with work or school email addresses because you could lose access to these emails at some point in the future. Microsoft accounts can only be created using permanent email addresses.

I tried to migrate my Mojang account to my Microsoft account, but I got a message saying that it was already taken

If you get an error message that says, “This one is taken,” it means that your Microsoft account already has a Mojang account attached to it. You’ll need to use another Microsoft account to migrate your Mojang account.

I signed in to the launcher with my Microsoft account, but it says I don't own Minecraft: Java Edition

Check the following:
  • Confirm that you’re signing in to the same Microsoft account you used to migrate your Mojang account.
  • Make sure that you’re not signing in with your Mojang account. Migrated accounts are only able to sign in with your Microsoft account.
  • If you forgot which email you used to create your Microsoft account for migration, you’ll need to speak with Microsoft support to recover the email address used to sign up. To do so, select Contact us on this page.
  • You may not have completed your migration. Go to your Mojang account profile page and start the migration again.

My account says it has been migrated already, but I didn't do it. How do I get my account back?

Check the following:
  • Could someone else in your household have migrated your Mojang account without your knowledge?
  • Is it possible that you’ve already migrated and used a different email to create your Microsoft account?

If you think your account has been migrated by someone other than yourself, contact Minecraft support.

Be sure to include your transaction ID from the purchase of your account. For help locating your transaction ID, see:
