### College GPA Calculator – Instructions

With our College GPA Calculator you may access to one of the most important tools for students. As you probably know, GPA stands for Grade Point Average. That means it is the average result from all of your grades. As calculated by the Universities of the United States, it is certainly a quite complicated system. That is we came up with our College GPA Calculator, a tool that will make such task easy for you!

### What is GPA and how can we help you calculate it?

Your GPA will determine your future options when it comes to studying in the US. How does it really work?

There are two basic grade systems in the country: based on numbers and letters. Both represent the grades you receive on daily assignments and tests. Knowing those represent the first steps in calculating your GPA.

The number system is different than in other countries because the scale goes from zero to one hundred. Each numerical note corresponds to a letter note. Any note less than a C (70) is considered as a failure.

We can help you calculate your GPA by providing you with a tool that automatically makes the numbers for you. Introduce the relevant data, hit calculate and you are good to go!

### How does the formula of your college GPA calculator work?

If you’d like to know how our college GPA calculator works, here is a simple explanation.

Below we present the letters with their corresponding mark:

Letter% number
A90 to 100
B80 to 89
C70 to 79
D60 to 69
F0 to 59

Letters are also identified as a positive note or a negative marks. This system exists because when calculating your average, the value of the letter is rounded to the closest decimal. It would look like this:

Letter% number
A93 to 100
A-90 to 92
B+87 to 89
B83 to 86
B-80 to 82
C+77 to 79
C73 to 76
C-70 to 72
D+67 to 69
D63 to 66
D-60 to 62
FLess than 60

### How Do teachers calculate grades for GPA?

Each teacher has his own method of calculating grades as he will indicate his rules in the syllabus that they distribute at the beginning of the course.

For example: perhaps all exams in the course are worth 40 % of the final mark, homework is worth 50 % and class participation is worth 10 %. In this case, he would then take the average of the completed tasks and consider the average as 50 % of the final grade for the course.

### The Scale 4.0 and how it will affect your marks

This is where the subject of the college GPA calculation gets complicated.

Your GPA is calculated on a scale from one to four. What happens is that the numerical marks (from 1 to 100) convert them to letters, and from the letter note to the new scale.

We know it's a bit confusing, but let us explain it to you. The following table shows you the conversion:

% numberLetter4.0 Scale
93 to 100A4.0
90 to 92A-3.7
87 to 89B+3.3
83 to 86B3.0
80 to 82B-2.7
77 to 79C+2.3
73 to 76C2.0
70 to 72C-1.7
67 to 69D+1.3
63 to 66D1.0
60 to 62D-0.7
Below 60F0.0

As an example, let’s pretend that you introduce the following data in our College GPA calculator:

MathematicsB+3 credits
EnglishA3 credits
EconomyC2 credits
HistoryA-3 credits

Each of those marks has a certain equivalent. If you look at the table above, you can match the note with its corresponding number on the 4.0 scale.

After this, we multiply that number with the number of credits the class is worth (this is different for each class, but it is usually identified by the course number).

Sounds complicated? Because it is! That is why is always better to simply use a college GPA calculator as ours!

To calculate any GPA (e.g., major GPA, upper-division only, etc):
Enter the total units for each grade completed in the boxes below. Alternatively, use the MCB GPA calculator to enter individual class grades instead of totals.

Important Notes

• Some calculations, like major GPA, might only include the highest of all repeat attempts. This is different from the UC GPA calculation or how graduate programs may calculate it.
• Grade Point Balance is a measure of deviation from a 0.0 balance, or 2.0 GPA. Example: Two, 4-unit D grades are harder to make up than one, 4-unit D grade, but both are a 1.0 GPA. The 2 D grades have a -8 balance, while the 1 D grade only has a -4 balance.

## UC Berkeley GPA Calculator

This GPA calculator allows current students at UC Berkeley to easily calculate their GPAs.

### Does your UC Berkeley GPA matter?

College can be a very stressful time for many students. On top of your gpa and normal course load, you also jobs and internships to apply to. The short answer is yes, your UC Berkeley GPA will matter and impact your short-term careers prospects. However, many jobs only require a minimum GPA for consideration. We encourage you to take your UC Berkeley GPA seriously, but also remember that a single number does not define you.

Step 1: Your UC Berkeley GPA is calculated by adding up all the grade points you have earned, and dividing by the total amount of credit hours earned.

Step 2: The chart below demonstrates how each letter grade corresponds to a certain grade point. The calculator above automatically converts each letter grade into grade points for your convenience.

Step 3: Credit hours vary from class to class. For example, a normal class at UC Berkeley may be worth 4 credits, while a part-time class is worth 2 credits. This means the part-time class will have less of an effect on your UC Berkeley GPA calculation than the full-time class.

Step 4: Enter a letter grade for each class you want to include in your calculation, the classes corresponding number of credits.

Step 5: Submit the classes and credits to automatically generate your GPA.

## GPA requirement

California applicants must earn at least a 3.0 GPA and nonresidents must earn a minimum 3.4 GPA in all A-G or college-preparatory courses to meet this requirement. To see how to calculate your UC GPA, follow our instructions below.

### How to calculate your UC GPA

Convert the letter grades earned in all A-G courses completed between summer after 9th grade through summer after 11th grade to grade points: A=4 points, B=3 points, C=2 points, D=1 points. (Pluses and minuses don't count.)

If you're a California resident and want to know which of your classes count as A-G courses, see your high school’s A-G course list. If you're not a California resident, referring to the A-G course list site (a database of UC-certified course lists in California schools) and the 15 college-preparatory course categories can provide guidance on the types of courses that have been UC-approved.

### 2. Give yourself an extra point for each semester of a UC honors-level course, with a maximum of 8 points between 10th and 11th grades.

For California residents:

• Honors courses are Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate Higher Level (IB HL) and designated Standard Level (IB SL) courses, UC-transferable college courses and UC-certified honors courses that appear on your school's course list.
• For 10th grade, you cannot use more than 4 honors points.
• Grades of D or F in an honors course do not earn an extra point.
• Grades of CR (credit) or P (pass) in an honors course do not earn an extra point.
• One college course = one grade = one honors point.

Nonresidents:

UC will grant honors weight for AP or IB courses and transferable college courses only, but not for school-designated honors courses. The weight is given to letter grades of A, B, or C.

### 4. Divide your total grade points by the number of letter grades earned in courses taken between the summer after 9th grade through summer after 11th grade.

This is your UC GPA (for example: 3.57). Do not round up or down.

## Berkeley gpa calculator

Grade Point Average (GPA) is the numeric measure of a student's average performance in all completed letter-graded courses. UC GPA is the numeric measure of a student's average performance in all completed letter-graded courses at the University of California.

### Step One: Determine Criteria and Courses to be Used in Factoring the GPA.

Determine what type of GPA is desired, e.g., major, overall UC, quarterly. Review all coursework to identify which courses should be used to factor the GPA.

Do include courses that:

• Fall within established parameters for the type of GPA desired, e.g., all upper division courses used to satisfy major or all work completed at any UC,and
• Are units that count towards your degree.

Do not include the following:

• Courses graded P, NP, S, U, IP, NG, or I.
• Excluded repeat units.
• Units reduced from a course.
• Units that fall outside of established criteria.
• Illegal repeat units.
• Courses that do not bear degree credit, e.g., workload courses.
• Courses with an Enrolled-No Work Submitted (ENWS) notation.

### Step Two: Calculate Grade Points for Each Course Being Used in the GPA.

The Official UC GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of Grade Points by the total number of attempted UC Units. These figures can be found on the official transcript. Attempted units are found in theATTMcolumn; Grade Points are found in theGPTScolumn.

Example:

• A student has 116.40 Grade Points and 59.00 Attempted UC Units.
• 116.40 Grade Points / 59.00 Attempted UC Units = 1.973 GPA.

### Step Three: Calculate the GPA

Calculate the GPA by adding all the values identified in step two and dividing this number by the total units earned in these courses.

GPA = Total Grade Points/Total Attempted UC Units Earned

Example -If we want to find the quarterly GPA for when courses and grades for a particular term are:

• Student completed 20 units; however, 4 of these units were P/NP. As these do not factor into the GPA calculation, this course adds nothing to the total values.
• Quarterly GPA = 55.6 grade points/16 attempted UC units = 3.475.

Grade Points, also called "quality" points, are points that are assigned to every UC unit for which a student receives a letter grade. The Grade point balance is a measure of how far a student is over or under the minimum performance standard—a GPA of 2.000. Grade points are commonly used in academic advising to set specific targets to order to reach a 2.000 GPA.

The grade point balance is particularly useful if a student's GPA is below 2.000, since it offers insight into what is necessary to get into good academic standing.

Each letter grade, exceptC, has an impact on the grade point balance. Each grade below C lowers the grade point balance, as indicated below; and each grade above C raises the grade point balance, as indicated below.

Grade Point values are assigned as follows:

NOTE:Workload units and courses that are assigned grades such as P, NP, S, U, NS, NG, I, and H arenotassigned Grade Points.

Example:

• A student receives an A- in a 4 unit class and so the course will provide 3.700 Grade Points for each unit.
• 3.700 Grade Points x 4.00 Units = 14.8 total Grade Points for the course.

Balance Points are negative or positive points that are assigned to every UC unit for which a student receives a letter grade. Balance points are designed so that a student with an UC GPA of 2.000 will have 0 balance points (an overall 2.000 GPA is the minimum GPA allowed for a student to stay in good academic standing). The higher a student's UC GPA is above 2.000, the higher the student's positive Balance Point balance; the lower a student's UC GPA is below 2.000, the higher the negative Balance Point balance.

Balance Point values are assigned as follows:

• A+    +2.000
• A      +2.000
• A-    +1.700
• B+   +1.300
• B     +1.000
• B-    +0.700
• C+   +0.300
• C     0.000
• C-    -0.300
• D+   -0.700
• D     -1.000
• D-    -1.300
• F      -2.000

Example:

• A student receives a B+ in a 4 unit course.
• +1.300 Balance Points x 4.00 units = +5.200 Balance Points.

Example:

• A student receives a D+ in a 3 unit course.
• -0.700 Balance Points x 3.00 units = -2.100 Balance Points.
