Springfield XD Mod 2 .45ACP

Springfield XD Mod 2

The Springfield Armory XD Mod 2 series has been a runaway success since their introduction at SHOT SHOW 2015. The Mod 2 is the first redesign of the venerable Springfield XD line which was originally introduced as the HS2000 to American gun owners in 1999. After Springfield Armory negotiated the rights to the HS2000, the pistol was renamed the Springfield Armory XD (Extreme Duty) and they have soldiered on as such until 2015 when Springfield felt it was time to revamp the pistol line and incorporate new designs.

The XD MOD 2 in .45 ACP is a compact double stack pistol designed to fill the need for those who desire a .45 for everyday carry that has the versatility of a compact 45 for concealed carry or a full size for times when concealment isn’t the priority.

When you bring your pistol home for the first time you’ll notice that your pistol comes in a nice polymer lockable hard case that is suitable for travel.. The case can be locked on the outside using a set of locks to prevent unauthorized access to the firearm. Once you open your case you will see your new XD MOD 2 with its included double stack 9 and 13 round magazines, cable lock, extra fiber optic rods, a cleaning brush and an instruction manual.

The pistol is small enough to carry without printing, but has enough mass to fill your hand with enough material to give 9+1 rounds of .45ACP. The XD mod 2 specifications are as follows:

Height: 4.75 with 9 rd. magazine

Width: 1.20 inches

Legnth: 6.5 inches

Barrel: 3.3 inches Hammer Forged steel (Melonited)

Slide: Forged Steel (Melonited)

Frame: Polymer

Weight: 26 oz empty with the compact mag

The XD Mod 2 .45ACP incorporates the following safety features into the firearm. It has a striker status indicator that sticks out to let the user know when the striker has been set and is in the ready to fire position. It also includes a grip safety, internal firing pin block and a trigger blade safety that Springfield Armory calls the Ultra Safety Assurance (USA) Action Trigger System. The firearm also has a loaded chamber indicator which is a little metal bar that protrudes up when a round is loaded in the chamber of the firearm. These safety features and indicators work together to provide you with one of the safest pistols on the market today all while not interfering with the ease of use once you’ve decided that it is time to pull the trigger and fire a shot downrange.

When you pick up the firearm you will get a chance to experience the new contoured grip that Springfield Armory calls ‘Grip Zone.’ It consists of 3 different grip textures to allow for one of the most comfortable pistol grips on the market today. That coupled with the ambidextrous mag release will allow for any shooter, regardless of hand preference, to operate this pistol without difficulty. The slide has been redesigned to make wracking the slide of the firearm a little easier. The front sight has been changed from a contrast sight to a red fiber-optic front sight which can allow a shooter to acquire their target faster. This especially rings true for those followers of the front site press technique (Wiley Clapp anyone?.) The red fiber optic rod can be changed out to a green rod if you desire a green front sight.

Disassembly of the firearm is a breeze. Simply lock the firearm back, rotate the take down lever into the upward position, lower the slide on the firearm and then release the trigger to remove the slide from the frame. Upon removal of the slide you will see the dual captive recoil spring along with the hammer forged Melonite barrel and that is the furthest you need to take down your pistol for basic cleaning and lubricating process.

I was happy to put 100 rds. of Sellier & Bellot .45 FMJ ACP downrange at my local range to test the functionality of the XD MOD 2 and its accuracy. I do not proclaim to be an expert, but I do understand the fundamentals of target shooting. In testing the firearm by slow firing at 10 yards I was able to keep all rounds on target without too much trouble. After shooting my first two magazines, all shots were within the 9-ring target or closer. During my second drill, I shot at 10 yards again, but this time firing 2 rounds and alternating between each shot to the targets on the left and right. Again I was impressed with the results using the XD Mod 2. My final drill involved moving the target out to 25-yard range and practicing slow firing at the target while aiming for the largest target possible. Again, I make no claims to being a professional, nor do I play one on TV, but I was satisfied with my initial results and the overall feel and accuracy of this firearm from Springfield Armory.

I have to say that the XD Mod 2 in .45ACP is continuing to impress me more each day. I have begun to transition this firearm into my rotation of carry firearms and, while I do possess a number of 9mm carry guns, I am glad to add this double stack .45ACP.  For more information visit Springfield Armory’s website!

Viridian’s universal C Series® laser/light combo is also compatible with the XD-S Mod.2 handgun. The new laser models can be purchased online or at select retailers.

Viridian's E Series laser sight is made for the everyday conceal and carry owner who demands the most powerful red laser allowed in the United States. Delivering rapid target acquisition when it’s needed most, the E Series is an invaluable component to any concealed carry setup.

The XD-S Mod. 2 chambered in 45 Auto features a slim, single-stack frame just 6.5 inches long and under five inches high with a grip that is a mere .975 inches wide. These dimensions combined with a premium front and rear sight and an enhanced trigger advance the pistol’s "point and shoot" ergonomics. Additional upgrades and a six-round capacity make it a premier concealed carry option.

The REACTOR R5-R, the brightest red laser on the market, offers similar performance for the budget-conscious gun owner. Each REACTOR laser includes a microfiber IWB holster that is equipped with Viridian’s patented INSTANT-ON® technology, ensuring that the laser activates automatically when the gun is drawn.

Springfield Armory XD Mod.2

By Joanna Nicholas

Click on the picture above to view the XD MOD.2 PDF

Introducing the latest pistol from Springfield Armory -- The XD MOD.2. This pistol appears new and different externally but at first touch has that intimate and familiar XD feel. If you have ever used an XD series pistol in the past you will instantly feel right at home with the new more comfortable grip. Upon using the pistol, it will be come apparent that meaningful upgrades were made not just cosmetic changes. PDF XD MOD.2

This is essentially the 15th anniversary of the basic XD design. Originally known as the HS2000 pistols were first imported into the U.S. starting late 1999 and early 2000. By the end of 2001 Springfield Armory had become the sole importer of the platform that had then been renamed the XD pistol. During this short time early in the platforms life many changes had occurred fine-tuning the ascetics of the pistol. By the time Springfield Armory took over the pistol, its design been though 4 generations giving us the XD pistol that we know now.

The XD MOD.2 comes in a newly designed case, thats not quite as robust as the Pelican style versions from the last couple of years. The good news is that Springfield has decided to continue to give customers the "Extras" kit that includes a holster, magazine pouch and magazine loader. These photos are springfield promotional photos and I do not think that the MOD.2 comes with three magazines. The kit I received came with one flush mount 13 round magazine and one 16 round extended magazine. The MOD.2 uses the same magazines as the Classic XD pistols that are readily available.

The XD MOD.2 is a model 2 version of the classic XD subcompact pistol. Internally both pistols share 98% of the same parts and are interchangeable. Externally the list of Improvements start with the sights. The XD MOD.2 comes with the same fiber optic front sight as the XDS. Inside of the pistols box is a baggie with extra green & red fiber optic rods. The rear sight is the same one that comes with the XDM pistol. Since this first MOD.2 is a subcompact pistol, utilizing the longer XDM rear sight buys you almost a 1/4 inch of sight radius. Both faces of the sights feature serrations that should help cut down with glare.

Even though the MOD.2 is different it still can use current XD grip accessories. The MOD.2 kit comes with two magazines a Flush mount and extended magazine. The extended magazine gives you 16 rounds in the 9mm version and 12 rounds in the 40S&W version. My hands are just big enough that my pinky finger will fall off the bottom of the flush fit magazine or awkwardly rest right on the lip. It is because of this it is my personal preference is to use some type of extension it just makes the pistol more comfortable to shoot. As you can see the Pearce Grip model PG-XD standard grip extension for the classic XD fits just fine with the new MOD.2.

The MOD.2 features more aggressive take down and slide stop levers for increased ease of use. The new 3D  levers actually give you increased leverage and purchase making reloads and field striping a simple task.

Taking a look at the trigger guard we see two popular aftermarket modifications that are now standard. The area behind the trigger on the top finger groove of the trigger guard has been raised allowing for a slightly higher and more comfortable grip.  The front of the trigger guard has been rounded off, they say it helps with snagging. Trigger guard hooks were all the rage in the 80's and since had become standard equipment on "combat" type pistols. The theory was that you could hook your support hand first finger on the hook to help hold the nose of the pistol down while shooting. What was in vogue back them is now just an unneeded carry over that can get in the way of things.

Springfield Armory Calls the grip "The Grip Zone". What this entails are three different texture zones with different levels of aggressiveness. Springfield tells me that they went though a lot of effort to make sure that they maximized the effectiveness of the grip for optimal performance. On the front strap you will notice the new addition of finger groves. These are useful but do not get in the way or make for an uncomfortable grip. There are other brands of pistols that one repeated complaint is that the finger groves can interfere with a proper grip. Springfield unlike other brands did not add to the circumference of the grip to add finger groves. Notice my picture of the MOD.2 with the blue line. That blue line represents were the front strap was with the classic XD's. What they did was cut into the frame slightly reducing the grip radius. Just that little bit makes a world of difference and just feels good in the hand. Add in the new texturing and it is easy to have a solid grip even with small hands and become one with the pistol. To quote my my wife "it felt like a good comfortable grip without having to stretch my hand". "It had a nice texture that provided grip without being rough or sharp"

Looking at either side of the frame you will notice a more pronounced and angled finger grove. Were before the classic XD's had a simple oval indentation on the side of the frame which was nice when your trigger finger pointed strait forward but did not help when you actually needed to reach the trigger. The new MOD.2 finger indentation is deeper and allows for your finger to point forward when off the trigger, but is also angled on the bottom. The bottom angle allows you to actually reach the trigger again by reducing the grip radius in the area you need it. When you look at it it just makes sense put the indentation were your finger is when you actually need to pull the trigger...duh.

The back strap features the new more aggressive texturing zones for better purchase. The new MOD.2 also features a "high-hand beavertail" that is slightly higher and re-contoured allowing you to get the web of your hand even higher into the back of the pistol than before.

Moving onto the back of the slide  you will notice why the back of the XD now looks like an XDM. They playfully incorporated both slide shapes in such a way to add a rear scallop. This new scallop acts just like a slide racker would on a competition pistol. It  is just enough "meat" for your finger to get ahold of and rack the slide with more authority if needed. It does not matter if your hands are sweaty or dry it is now easier to manipulate slide.

The after market Pearce grip fits remarkably well and nicely matches the zone 3 light texting of the frame. The grip also fits the contours of the grip nicely and looks like it could be an OEM item. In my opinion this is a must for subcompact type pistols. The Factory extension is a disappointment though. While it is functional it is now ascetically unpleasing. Springfield spent such effort into making up the different texture zones that it seems like they dropped the ball when it came to the magazine extension. They used the same extension that is used for the classic XD's. The older grip extension does not match the textures or look of the new pistol. If you look closely the the pictures you will also notice that along the front strap with the extension it does not fully follow the same contours. This slight off set can be annoying. I like combining old with new just not in this case.

Change is tough especially after 15 years, what you have grown to love suddenly becomes different. But change is not necessarily bad, especially when they make a gun that I already loved even better. You take a look at each new feature and realize that someone sat down and stole my thoughts on what it would take to make a good gun even better. While some my criticize that these are only cosmetic upgrades, which they are. You really need to feel it, hold it and caress it to find out that Springfield and HS Produkt really have something special here.

Springfield XD Mod.2 Lights

Let’s bring some light to the topic of Springfield XD Mod.2 tactical lights. If you want to be sure with your target even in the dark you’ve come to the right place. This guide will tell you about the best handgun lights and provide direct links to them. Also expect a summary of pros and cons of each individual rail mounted light. Check the best handgun lights below.

Best Springfield XD Mod.2 Tactical Lights

1. StreamLight TLR-1 HL Rail-Mounted Light

This pistol light is ideal for compact and full-sized handguns. It has an ambidextrous toggle lever for momentary and stay-on modes. This tactical light is a standard and a favorite among handgun owners. It features a stunning 800 lumen beam which is basically an equivalent of a lighthouse power light and the end of your pew. The rai mounted light can light up an alley or blind the attacker.

The weight of the StreamLight TLR-1 HL Rail-Mounted light is 4.2 ounces which is somewhere between light and heavy in terms of tactical lights, so you won’t feel a huge difference with the light mounted on your handgun. The rail clamp has a design that makes it possible for the user to rapidly attach and detach the light from the weapon. You do not have to go through the instructions as the process is often clear to many people. The dimensions are 3.4 x 3 x 3 inches. The average battery life is 1.75 hours of constant light and it runs on a lithium battery.

Last but not least, the StreamLight TLR-1 HL has a durable aluminium construction, is waterproof and is also impact resistant. The finish is anodized for more durability. You can’t go wrong with a StreamLight TLR-1 HL mounted on your Springfield XD Mod.2. TLR-1 HL is available in Black, Coyote and Brown version. Click the color for more information. (Amazon)

2. Olight Baldr Pro 1350 Lumen Tac Flashlight

.

Compared to the previous rail light, the Olight Baldr Pro 1350 Lumens Tactical Flashlight is almost double in size and weight – 3.30’’ (length) x 1.44’’ (width) at 4.55 oz. However, its performance is extremely high and it is considered by many a leader among compact rail lightning tools. It’s mounting is quite quick and convenient and it can be attached to any gun with a Picatinny or Glock rail.

The output of this light is 1350 lumens and the beam distance it offers is approximately 284 yards, which is quite substantial for a mounted light. Moreover, it lets you switch between 3 different LED options – white LED only, green light only and a combination of white LED and green light. The green light can be utilized well especially at night. As far as the running time is concerned, it can last up to 125 minutes on high mode and nearly 240 minutes on low mode (the lumen output is decreased to 300 lumens).

The material it’s made of is solid aluminum alloy, which gives the flashlight extremely high strength and reliability. Although you wouldn’t be able to use it underwater much, it’s still waterproof to splashing water from all directions. The Olight Balrd Pro is also available in a Desert Tan color. If you are looking for a high intensity rail flashlight, this is your go to option. More information (Amazon).

You’ll get an ambidextrous switch for easier operations. The X300 is a little bit longer that your average tactical light. The length of the tactical light may seem as a downside but actually its a positive thing as it is not in the muzzle blast area and won’t get dirty after a trip to the range. The dimensions are 3.6 x 4 x 3 inches.

The TIR lens allows adequate peripheral vision. It has an easy-to-use one-finger touch system that makes it easy to engage or disengage the flashlight. Available in Black and Tan color (Amazon).

The very basic of why you should get yourself a tactical light for your Springfield XD Mod.2 is very simple - it’s illumination. This can be beneficial in terms of self defense or any type of carry. Professionals, such as soldiers or Law Enforcement officers often have experience with tactical lights and know their benefits. So why not join them and bask in the illuminating light of tactical lights. The 4 important benefits of rail mounted flashlights are.

Range

A bright and luminous handgun light extends your natural handgun range and sight. You get a much clearer picture of your surroundings and gain the ability to track your target with a flash of light. Clear, high-quality light provides a more clear sight path with few fuzzy areas or areas of excessive shadow that can make it difficult to hone in on a target or potential threat.

Illumination In Times Of Need

When you find yourself in any dark area, no matter if any threat or danger is present, the light from your tactical flashlight can be life saving. If the need is bigger, you can use the light from the gun flight to alert your presence. The brightest flashlights will emit the longest and strongest streams of light which will make it easier for rescue personnel or family members to ascertain your location. Think outside the box and use your light smart.

Bright Light - Weapon Itself

If you don’t want to use deadly force you can use your Springfield XD Mod.2 tactical flashlight to stun your target or to threaten him without the need of any physical activity. There are some incredibly bright lights currently available on the marketplace. Most shooters know that non-lethal ways of stunning or running off a potential threat are far preferable to using deadly force.

Enhancing your capabilities

The market now is overwhelmed with state of the art gun accessories that every shooter can utilise for himself/herself. That means that military-grade materials and technologies can be put under the barrel. Weapon lights for pistol are now having the best features available to the civilian market and having a light or a light laser combo is a benefit at all times.

How To Install Springfield XD Mod.2 Tactical Lights

Installing your Springfield XD Mod.2 may seem hard, but actually is not. This small guide will help you understand the basics needed for a proper installation. As usual, always read the instructions from your tactical light supplier first and then look for guidance on the internet.

1. Safety First

Before you begin doing any sort of cleaning, maintenance, upgrade, or repairs to your weapon, be sure that you remove any ammunition and only work on unloaded weapons. Many people will read this warning and roll their eyes, but there are too many preventable injuries and even fatalities that result from someone working on a loaded weapon. No matter how much experience you have with a firearm, double check every time to ensure that is unloaded before proceeding.

2. Clear The Rail

Before installing any accessory to a firearm, you want to ensure that you are working with a clean, debris-free surface. Using patches or even a light rag along with sterile alcohol, gently clean the rail mount and allow it to dry for a few minutes.

3. Install the Battery

Before you even mount the handgun light, it is recommended that you install the battery. To do this, you need to twist the bulb assembly at the end of the flashlight. Once the top is removed, you will see the place where you place the AA or CR123 batteries. Remember to gently replace the bulb assembly and do not over-tighten or you may cause threading.

4. Preparing the Mounting

You will want to use an Allen wrench for this part of the installation process. Here, you will use the including mounting by placing it on the front rail of the weapon and wrenching it firmly into place. Again, it is important that you do not over tighten the mounting assembly.

5. Attaching the Flashlight

Again, you will use an Allen wrench for this final step in the installation process. You will need to loosen the mounting bolt on the recently attached mount. Then, position the flashlight on the mount before tightening it into place. Once again, you want to take care, not to over tighten the flashlight assembly. It is simple and takes just a few minutes to properly install a weapon-mounted flashlight, but it should be noted that they do require some regular maintenance just as any other accessory.

Pistol-Mounted vs. Hand-Held Tactical Lights

If you came all the way down here you must know the benefits of rail mounted lights. But some shooters prefer tactical flashlights held in their hands. So, what is better - pistol mounted or hand-held?

Do you remember all the cool cop movies, where they aimed their gun at the bad guy while at the same time illuminating him/her with a flashlight? If you do then know that this was not only a Hollywood trick. A flashlight can easily fit in your pocket and become a part of your EDC and you can use the benefits of it only in the time of need. Hand-held lights for Springfield XD Mod.2 are especially useful in a number of situations. If you don’t want to end up searching for a custom holster for your rail-mounted light, then the choice of hand-held lights is a great one. There is also no need of getting used to a different weight of your handgun, as a rail-mounted flashlight puts additional weight on the barrel and might affect your aim. And if you just need to light your path in a dark alley or forest you don’t have to draw your weapon and be, well, be the guy that uses his gun as a flashlight. But beware that hand-held lights require practice. If you find yourself in a high stress or tenuous situation, having something that requires grace and skill is not exactly ideal. For people who have a lot of practice, there can be a preference for a hand-held light as you have more flexibility in where you can aim it and still have your weapon pointed at a target.

Tactical lights are affordable and easy to find. Have in mind that lights require batteries. And the brighter the light the more power it needs. Most of lights often use 2 types of batteries. AA and CR123. AA batteries usually have a 1.5 V voltage. CR123 batteries also have a usual 1.5 V voltage and differ only in the chemical elements powering them, so it’s basically the same.
