Coat Racks to Declutter Your Entryway

Why you should trust us

I’ve been covering home organizing and decor for Wirecutter since In that time, I’ve spoken to numerous home organizers, and I’ve written about closet-organizing items and small-bathroom options, as well as gear for small apartments. After hundreds of hours of research and testing, I have a keen sense of what makes an organizing tool great and how to take advantage of it for maximum utility. I also live in a small apartment, and I have put many Wirecutter picks into use in my own home.

How to choose the right coat rack for your home

Coat racks tend to become dumping grounds for totes, coats, and other junk, but the right design can help wrangle that clutter. Consider these questions in figuring out which style will work best:

  • What are you storing? If you’re mostly storing coats, look for racks that have deeper hooks to prevent them from slipping off. If you need a design that can accommodate both coats and smaller accessories, consider a rack that has hooks at two levels or varying heights.
  • How much space do you have? Small-space dwellers should consider a wall-mounted rack; the most stable freestanding options tend to have large bases that take up a good deal of floor space. However, if you live in a rental and are reluctant to bore holes in the wall, a freestanding coat rack may help you keep your security deposit. Be sure to measure your space—some racks are surprisingly large.

For extra-tight wall spaces, try mounting a few wall hooks for more flexibility.

  • Wall Hooks We Love

    Wall Hooks We Love

Functional hooks are plentiful, stylish hooks exist. The trick is finding both in one package. Here are 11 that our staff use and love for reducing clutter.

A space-savvy rack: Schoolhouse Mollie Hook

The Schoolhouse Mollie Hook in gold and natural wood installed on a white wall.

Why it’s great: Hang the Mollie Hook in your entryway, and you’ve got nearly as much storage as you would with racks double or triple the size. The Mollie has six arms on its 7-by-6½-inch frame, so it can hold a decent amount of stuff (far more than most hooks of its size) but still easily fits on small or unusually shaped walls. It’s only 4 inches deep, one of the shorter hooks we tested, so it also works well in a narrow hallway. You get ample space to hang both accessories and a jacket or two. However, because the hooks are relatively close together, this rack can’t comfortably accommodate six bulky coats at once.

The bouncy-ball-sized wooden knobs on the ends feel smooth and are solidly attached. They help keep thin straps (say, on your umbrella) from sliding off but don’t make it difficult to remove a bag or jacket quickly. (This was a common complaint about other knobbed hooks we researched.) The Mollie Hook is available in eight color combinations, so you should be able to find one that matches your decor. It also comes with screws that match its frame color, a nice touch we always appreciate.

The mollie hook with bags coats and umbrellas hanging on it.

The Mollie Hook holds a surprisingly large amount of stuff, especially considering its compact size. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

A side view of teh mollie wall hook installed on a white wall.

Its 4-inch depth makes the Mollie ideal for narrow spaces, and the smooth knobs keep gear from sliding off. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Mollie now hook costs nearly $—up from $, the price when we first recommended it and already—a lot to pay for such a small item. We tested many bigger racks that cost about the same and hold more. And the finish on the Mollie is a bit delicate—our drill scratched the brass—so be careful when using sharp tools to mount it.

Dimensions: 7 by 6½ by 4 inches (WHD)

A modern, industrial rack: Room & Board Crew Multiple Wall Hook

A Room & Board Crew Multiple Wall Hook in black installed on a white wall

Why it’s great: At 38 inches wide, the Room & Board Crew Multiple Wall Hook is the one to choose if you need to pile your rack high with bulky gear. In our tests its widely spaced hooks made it better than any other rack we tried for storing coats or tote bags that wouldn’t fit on racks with slimmer hooks mounted closer together. Racks with more arms may hold more individual items, but the Crew’s sturdy hooks—eight accessory hooks on top and four coat hooks below—can easily hold a whole family’s winter coats at once. Plus, if you’re willing to wait on a special order (and pay around $20 more), it’s also available in 17 colors—more than any other rack we tested. (You used to have to pay $20 more for the colored options, but now they and the plain lacquered steel version cost the same.)

The Crew coat rack with coats, bags and hats hanging on it.

The Crew rack is the best we’ve found for holding multiple bulky items, as it has the most space between hooks. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

A side view of the crew coat rack in black.

This rack’s hooks were sharper than others we tried, so we don’t recommend it if you need to hang delicate fabrics, but it worked fine for most jackets, straps, and hats. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

The Crew is easy to install and comes with matching hardware. Its lacquered steel frame feels sturdy and durable, and its hooks are steadfast under heavy loads. Many racks we researched and tested skewed toward a traditional or mid-century style, but the Crew has an unusual industrial vibe that looks striking on a wall.

If you like the look of the Crew rack but can’t fit such a large piece in your entryway, it’s available as a single hook so you can hang as many or as few as your space will accommodate.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Crew rack won’t fit in smaller entryways (and it’s available in only one size), so it’s one of the least versatile options we considered. We also found the metal edges on the Crew’s hooks to be a bit sharp; compared with racks we tried that had large knobs, it won’t be as gentle on delicate fabrics such as a silk scarf.

Colors and finishes: Natural steel with lacquer coating and 17 powder-coated color options

Dimensions: 38 by 8 by 2½ inches (WHD)

An attractive budget choice: The Container Store Maple Shaker Peg Rack

The The Container Store Maple Shaker Peg Rack installed on a white wall.

Why it’s great: The Container Store’s Maple Shaker Peg Rack is attractive and well-made, a combo that's difficult to come by for under 20 bucks. It’s made of solid maple, rather than particle board like many budget racks. The unfinished wood looks nice on its own, but you could easily paint or stain it to suit any decor. Although the design isn’t as flashy as that of most other racks we tested, the utilitarian silhouette is beautifully simple.

The Maple Shaker coat rack with a bag, coat, hat and umbrella hanging on it.

The Maple Shaker holds a bit less than racks we tried with more hooks, but it’s just as sturdy and a fraction of the price. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

A side view of the shaker coat rack installed on a white wall.

Whereas most racks we tried had hooks that sloped upward, the Maple Shaker’s are perpendicular to the wall. Nothing fell off during our tests, but the design makes this rack look less streamlined than others. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

The hooks won't hold a lot of bulky coats, but if you need a rack with multiple hooks and you’re on a tight budget, the Maple Shaker is your best bet. We also think it would look particularly nice in a kid's room. It’s available in four- and six-hook versions.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Maple Shaker’s hooks are mounted perpendicular to the wall, so they stick directly out at a degree angle. Most other racks we tested angle their hooks slightly upward, which looks sleek and prevents items from sliding off. The Maple Shaker did a good job of holding our stuff (although we didn’t try to hang multiple things on each hook), but the design still looks a bit cheaper and less elegant than that of pricier models we tried.

Colors and finishes: unfinished maple

Dimensions and sizes: 24 by 3¼ by 3½ inches (WHD, four-hook), 36 by 3¼ by 3½ inches (WHD, six-hook)

A design classic: Eames Hang-It-All

A white Eames Hang-It-All coat rack installed on a blue wall.

Why it’s great: Introduced in and rereleased in , the Eames Hang-It-All has become a classic piece of mid-century design. Although it’s pricier than any other rack we tested, its finishes are also better, consisting of painted or hardwood knobs, a powder-coated steel frame, and hardware to match. If you’ve seen the multicolored Hang-It-All only in photos, it might seem garish, but in person the colors are subtle and beautiful. If bright knobs aren’t your thing, the rack is also available in five subtler finishes. (In June , the manufacturer introduced a “Pride” edition, incorporating the colors of the rainbow.)

At nearly 20 inches wide, the Hang-It-All is a versatile size, and its 14 knobs are perfectly spaced to accommodate a variety of jackets, hats, and umbrellas. We found its layout to be more functional than that of any other rack we tested. Thanks to the deep bend of the hooks, they easily hold bulky items—and also let you layer multiple items on each hook—better than those of other racks. This rack would easily handle a dozen coats flung over it.

The Eames holds a lot (and a wide variety) of stuff in a relatively small space. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

It has one of most functional layouts we found, with 14 efficiently placed hooks and bent metal arms that never let coats and accessories slip off. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

A close up of the eames hang it all wall bracket.

The Hang-It-All includes matching powder-coated screws, one of many small design features that help it rise above imitators. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Hang-It-All’s price is double or triple that of other racks we tested.

Colors and finishes: original multicolored, white, white/walnut, black/walnut, black, dark blue/maple, Pride-themed multicolored

Dimensions: 19¾ by 14¾ by 6½ inches (WHD)

An inexpensive designer replica: Modway Gumball Mid-Century Wall-Mounted Coat Rack

The Modway Gumball Mid-Century Wall-Mounted Coat Rack in orange and white installed on a blue wall.

Although we think the Eames rack is worth the price, we couldn’t ignore the dozens of far-cheaper and near-exact replicas we uncovered in our research, and we wondered whether any of them came close to the original. None we found have the luxurious finishes of the authentic Eames, but if you like the style of the Hang-It-All and can’t afford to spend $ to $, we think the Modway Gumball Mid-Century Wall-Mounted Coat Rack is a well-constructed alternative. Its size and layout are nearly identical to those of the Eames, but its overly shiny knobs and mismatching screws give it an overall cheaper look and feel. Still, its steel frame feels equally sturdy and is just as functional as the Eames, with the same 14 hooks and multi-tiered design.

The modway coat rack installed next to the eames coat rack on a blue wall.

The Modway (left) is a near-exact copy of the Eames rack, without the luxe finishes. Design purists may want to save up for the original. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

A side view of the orange and white modway coat rack installed on a blue wall.

The multilevel design of this rack is nearly identical to the Eames rack’s design, and equally functional. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

A close up of the mounting screw on the modway coat rack.

The Modway’s lacking little touches—such as the screws, which don’t match its frame—give it away as the copy. It doesn’t feel as luxe and special to use. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Modway’s cheap-looking finishes—especially the faux wood and the garish, glossy shellac knobs—easily give it away as an imitation. Although the Modway comes with four mounting screws, they’re silver tone instead of powder-coated white and thus don’t match the rack when you mount it on the wall. Such design elements may be small, but they’re what makes the original Eames Hang-It-All look more luxurious and special.

If you’re a purist, you may take offense at this clear copy of the Eames, and you may feel that replicas undercut the authority and authenticity of the original design. But this problem isn’t unique to the Modway rack: Many big-box housewares stores sell replicas, and even the Schoolhouse Mollie Hook we love is a “faithful replica of a midcentury modern piece.” Replicas tend to come with the territory of mass-market decor.

A sleek and graceful wooden rack: Rejuvenation Brendan Farrell 6-Fin Hook Rack

The Rejuvenation Brendon Farrell 6-Fin Hook Rack installed on a white wall.

Why it’s great: If you’re looking for a statement piece for your entryway, Rejuvenation’s Brendon Farrell 6-Fin Hook Rack will wow. Its rich wood and its sleek design make it far more graceful than the brighter, more fun Eames Hang-It-All or the industrial Room & Board Crew. Constructed from solid oak or walnut, the rack is sturdy and well-made, but due to its single row of hooks, it holds less than most other racks we recommend with two or more levels. It easily holds the gear of one or two people, but don’t expect it to be much of a workhorse. If you regularly load up a coat rack with the whole family’s coats and bags, this one isn’t up to the task. But even though other racks we tried may hold more, we just couldn’t resist the good looks of the Brendon Farrell. A inch version with 10 hooks is also available.

In our tests, the Brendon Farrell was the easiest mounted rack to install. Its frame hides the mounting screws, so it looks especially polished on the wall. Video: Kyle Fitzgerald

The rack makes a stylish statement in an entryway, but because it has only a single row of hooks, it doesn’t hold as much as most other racks we tested. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

It has a distinctive and graceful profile, and the tallest hooks of any rack we tried. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

It’s the only one of our picks that has hidden mounting: Three keyhole-shaped cutouts on the back of the rack hide the screws. This design also makes it one of the easiest racks to mount because you can drill the screws before hanging the rack, rather than trying to hold up the rack and attach it to the wall at the same time.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: When we unboxed this rack, one of the “fins,” or hooks, was a bit loose. Fixing it was as simple as tightening a screw. But for a price tag over $, we had hoped for better.

The most stable freestanding rack: Umbra Flapper Standing Coat Rack

The Umbra Flapper Standing Coat Rack standing in front of a brick wall next to other furniture.

Why it’s great: The sturdy base of the Umbra Flapper Standing Coat Rack makes it the most stable freestanding rack of the seven we considered and the three we tested. It remained upright even when we loaded it up with stuff and tried to topple it over. Thanks to its large, heavy base, it felt sturdier than the other coat tree we recommend, the Yamazaki, which was lighter and smaller.

The Umbra also feels particularly well-made, with a solid wood trunk and sturdy aluminum hooks. We’ve been using a pair of these racks in our office for the past four years, and they are showing no signs of wear.

In our test group, the Umbra had the most-customizable hooks—you can open as many or as few as you need. Video: Kyle Fitzgerald

The umbra coat rack with bags, coats and a hat hanging on it.

The Umbra has no trouble standing up to heavy loads; it’s the sturdiest freestanding rack we found. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

The bigger base of the Umbra (right) is more solid but also takes up more floor space than that of the Yamazaki (left). Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

The umbra coat rack standing next to the yamazaki coat rack in front of a brick wall.

Because the hooks on the Umbra (left) are concentrated toward the top of the rack, it doesn’t hold bulky items as well as a rack with more space between hooks like the Yamazaki (right). Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

The Umbra Flapper was also more customizable than any other freestanding rack we tried. Its nine hooks can either stow away so that they’re flush with the trunk of the rack or stay “flapped” open. We found this rack simple to assemble, with only three pieces to attach; others we put together had dozens of parts and a long list of steps. It also comes in a walnut finish with black hooks, a gray finish with gray hooks, and a white finish with white hooks.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The body of the Umbra is relatively compact, but its 16½-inch-diameter base uses up more space than that of other freestanding racks we tested. The hooks are also a bit close together, and they’re concentrated toward the top of the rack. If you like to hang bags or other bulkier items on a coat rack, consider the Yamazaki, which has more space between hooks.

Dimensions: 66½ inches high, 16½ inches in diameter

A quirky and small coat tree: Yamazaki Plain Coat Hanger

The yamazaki coat rack standing in front of a brick wall next to other furniture.

Why it’s great: If you’re strapped for floor space in your entryway, consider the Yamazaki Plain Coat Hanger. Its compact base is only 11 inches in diameter, about 5 inches smaller than the foundation on our other favorite coat tree, the Umbra Flapper.

The Yamazaki’s hooks aren’t as customizable as the Umbra’s (which can open and close), but because they’re spaced out more evenly around the trunk, this rack can hold more sizes and styles of items. That said, the Yamazaki has fewer hooks overall, six instead of nine. Made with white-painted steel and natural-wood tips, they resemble tree branches, a cute and whimsical design we love. (It also comes in a black version with the same wood-tipped "branches.")

The yamazaki coat rack hung with a bag, hat and coat.

In our tests, assembling the Yamazaki was relatively easy but not quite as simple as putting the Umbra together. Most of the pieces went together intuitively, but we hit a few rough patches that eventually forced us to cave and refer to the instructions. Don’t be a hero—read through all the steps before beginning.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The Yamazaki’s base isn’t as stable as the Umbra’s. Not only is it smaller, but its foundation is also half the weight of the Umbra’s, which made this rack feel more wobbly when loaded up with jackets and bags. It didn’t fall over in our tests, but the Umbra’s one-piece, heavy base felt much stronger, so the Umbra is a better choice if you need your coat rack to withstand some jostling.

How we picked and tested

Six coat racks and two coat stands installed in front of a white wall.

We considered only coat racks that we thought were simultaneously beautiful and functional. We made sure they were easy to assemble and could be installed by a single person, were sturdy enough not to bend or break, and had well-spaced hooks and a good layout to accommodate coats and accessories. Since every space is different, we considered and tested a variety of styles: freestanding coat racks, garment racks, wall-mounted coat racks, and various wall-mounted cubby systems.

We considered popular and highly rated racks from large online retailers like Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Hayneedle, and Room & Board, and we also looked at racks from smaller shops such as Rejuvenation and Schoolhouse. We scanned hundreds of racks to find 37 we thought deserved more research. Going by the above criteria and positive owner reviews, we narrowed our list down to 15 models to test; they included two garment-rack-style options, three coat trees, nine wall-mounted racks, and one mirror rack with storage.

To test the freestanding racks for stability, we hung a jacket and a heavy tote bag from each and tried to topple them over by repeatedly bumping and shoving them. We installed the wall-mounted racks on a plywood board, noting whether they were easy to mount and whether they felt stable in the wall. We tested their functionality by hanging coats, bags, and an umbrella from each. We eliminated any racks that were too difficult to assemble, felt oddly sized, or were otherwise not functional. If anything broke, we immediately disqualified the rack.

The competition

Garment racks

The Songmics Bamboo Garment Rack looks nice and even feels sturdy once it’s up, but it was a bear for us to assemble. The shelves consist of a dozen or so bamboo slats that you need to insert individually into the end caps to hold them together. In our tests, keeping the rack together during assembly was a major hassle and felt like way too much work. (It also appears to have been discontinued.)

Freestanding coat racks

Pottery Barn’s Lucy Coat Rack was easy to assemble, felt relatively sturdy, and was a functional 60 inches high. But we didn’t like the hooks: They felt too sharp and seemed like they could tear up a nice scarf or sweater.

Wall-mounted coat racks

I considered buying the ILoveHandles Switchboard a few years ago, but I’m glad I didn’t. What seemed like a very customizable rack was actually a nightmare to install. The company forgot to include the instructions with our unit. But even if the instructions had been present, we would have found it nearly impossible to get all the hooks facing the right direction long enough for us to mount the rack, and even then, the wobbly hooks made the rack hard to level.

The Hay Beam is a good-looking rack and could be a great option for a bathroom. But with no end caps on this design, the hooks could easily slide off the frame.

The Yamazaki Rin Wall-Mounted Coat Hanger is another attractive, reasonably priced ($45) rack that uses the same no-end-cap design as the Hay Beam. However, one of our editors has had three of them in her hallway, laden with coats and backpacks, for a couple of years and has yet to have a hook slide off accidentally. So if you like its look, you may want to this rack a try.

One of the hooks on The Container Store’s Bamboo Coat & Hat Rack snapped off as we were removing it from its plastic packaging. Where it broke, we could see that the hook had been glued and stapled into the board. With that kind of shoddy construction, it was clear that other hooks could easily break under a minor load. (This rack too appears to have been discontinued.)
