Surviving Infidelity: Should You Stay or Should You Go?

You and your husband are in a committed relationship—or so you thought. You love your husband and your life together. Your husband&#;s law practice is thriving. Your three children are all happy and healthy and you&#;ve recently been chosen to head up a major fundraiser for underprivileged children. Then, by chance, you discover titillating emails your husband has sent to his long-time secretary Jennie, a married mother of two pre-school-aged children. The four of you routinely socialize and you and Jennie frequently share confidences. Your head is spinning. You&#;re in a state of shock. Your wonderful, secure life is unraveling right before your eyes. What to do? Surviving infidelity may feel impossible.

You call your husband and tell him to come home immediately.  He asks first whether something happened to one of your children. You tell him that the children are fine, but that you are not. He agrees to come home early. The question then becomes, what do you do with your cheating spouse.

Infidelity Statistics in the USA

Did you know that in the United States studies show that between 25%% of Americans cheat on their spouses? Male respondents in the age group have the highest infidelity rate at 31% and 16% of women in their 60&#;s reported infidelity, the highest rate among female respondents. Studies estimate that 10% of affairs start online and 40% of online affairs turn into real-life affairs. Although cheating was once considered primarily a male activity, the incidence of women cheating has continued to climb.

As a psychotherapist and sex therapist with over 35 years of clinical experience, I have treated thousands of men and women both individually and in couples therapy and have discovered the primary reasons why people choose to engage in extramarital affairs.

Reasons Why People Have Affairs

  1. Marital Dissatisfaction
  2. Sexual Dissatisfaction
  3. A Desire for Variety.  (&#;I love my spouse, but&#;&#;)
  4. A Surprise Unanticipated Encounter That Turns into An Affair
  5. Do I Still Have It? A Need for Validation from Someone Other Than My Spouse
  6. My Spouse Has a Chronic Illness and I Need Some Emotional and Physical Intimacy
  7. Retaliation: I Want to Punish My Spouse for Having an Affair
  8. Plain and Simple: Sexual Chemistry
  9. Consciously or Unconsciously, Affairs Are Wake-Up Calls That Something Is Amiss in the Marriage.

After the Affair: Should I Stay or Should I Go? It Depends…

Virtually every couple I see contacts me for therapy because of infidelity. And by the way, more and more women are engaging in extramarital affairs than in previous generations. Once one spouse discovers the affair (and they usually do, sooner or later), both spouses will need to figure out what to do. What will the next steps be?  Do we still love each other?  Will I ever be able to forgive? Should we get a divorce? Should we try to mend our marriage? Do I want to leave my marriage for my lover?

Whether couples choose to stay together or to divorce, expect there to be lots of ups and downs. People can learn over time to forgive. However, they will never FORGET!

The couples that I work with are often able to acknowledge that their marriages have been coasting along for many years. I have encouraged people who listen to my ASK BEATTY SHOW on the Progressive Radio Network and who see me on television and who attend my lectures to remember to keep their marriages at the top of their priority lists. However, the reality is that their children, careers, and financial concerns, coupled with the pressures of day-to-day living, almost always occupy the number one spot in people&#;s lives. And herein lies the lethal mistake that couples continue to make.

Plants and flowers will die if they are not watered and tended to. The same goes for a marriage.

Points to Ponder

  1. Is the couple sincerely interested in mending the marriage?  If the answer is yes&#;
  2. Is the couple willing to work with a competent marital therapist who can help them to fully understand what happened and aid them in moving forward?

Buyer Beware: Therapists are not the same. Do your homework and get a referral from someone whom you trust.

  1. Mending a broken heart and a broken marriage takes time. Are you willing to participate in a painful process with the hope that your marriage can potentially be better and stronger than ever before?
  2. On the other hand, you may find yourself in a situation where either you or your spouse wants a divorce. If that is the case, you need to find yourself a competent divorce attorney who will help you to protect your interests in terms of custody, visitation, alimony, child support, and even hidden monies that you may be unaware of. If there’s been deception in the marriage, you don’t know what other surprises you may discover.

Learning what your next steps are in terms of finding the right lawyer, and how to keep your emotions out of the legal negotiation, and how to support your heart, is the work of a divorce coach. Her job is to help you feel anchored as you learn about the process and take steps, step by step.

In over 35 years, the vast majority of couples who have worked with me chose not to divorce. Rather, they put their time and energies into trying to resurrect their marriages. And the good news was that most were successful.

In fact, many couples have told me that their marriages were happier and stronger and more sexually and emotionally satisfying after the affair.

Lessons Worth Learning

  1. Prioritize your marriage.
  2. If you find that your own individual issues, be they emotional, psychological, psychiatric, physical, or sexual are getting in the way of your life and relationship, give yourself permission to seek help.
  3. A good marriage is dependent on two emotionally healthy individuals.
  4. When problems arise, as they do in all marriages, don&#;t bury them or deny them and avoid tackling the various issues head-on, pretending that they will disappear on their own. That&#;s magical thinking!
  5. If you and your spouse are unable to successfully acknowledge, address and RESOLVE  your problems on your own, don&#;t hesitate to reach out and ask for professional help.

Can Infidelity Make A Relationship Better?

MICHEL MARTIN, HOST:

We're going to switch gears now and, as I said, this is another emotional and sensitive topic, but a personal one. And if I were to say the names Bill Clinton, LeAnn Rimes, Kobe Bryant, what would you say that they all have in common? Well, that they are all very bright, accomplished people and that they have all participated in infidelity. It still seems to be the case that the public seems shocked when such indiscretions become public.

But it turns out that 4 in 10 marriages are challenged by affairs; and it also turns out that more than half of American marriages survive the affair. These are some of the surprising findings - perhaps surprising to some - that are discussed in Dr. Scott Haltzman's new book. His book is titled "The Secrets of Surviving Infidelity" and he's with us now. Dr. Haltzman, thank you so much for speaking with us.

DR. SCOTT HALTZMAN: It's a pleasure to be here, Michel.

MARTIN: And I want to mention that later in the program, we are going to speak to some people who've been through this, and they'll talk about their own personal experiences here. These were just a few of the hundreds of responses that we received when we asked for listeners to tell us their stories.

So first, I wanted to talk about that, Dr. Haltzman. I noticed, in your book, that you've been reporting on this and researching this for 25 years now. And you've said that when you first started working in this area and talking about your findings publicly, that you had a very hard time getting people to talk outside of the - sort of the therapeutic circle about this. Is it no longer the case that people are afraid to talk about it; or is it that there's more cheating going on, and there are more people to talk about it?

HALTZMAN: Well, I don't know that there's any more cheating going on than there had been before, and I also would like to believe that people are more willing and able to talk about it. But my experience has still been that they are eager to talk about it with me - send me emails, or call my office. But when I say to them, oh - you know - great; you know, Michel would like you to be on TELL ME MORE, suddenly, they pull back and go, I'm not sure I can do that. Because there still is a great degree of shame and embarrassment about infidelity, both for the person that had engaged in it and for the person who's a victim of it.

MARTIN: I think that a lot of people will be surprised by the number that we cite in - that you cite in your research, and that we've cited already here, which is that 4 in 10 marriages are actually affected by this. Should we be surprised by that number?

HALTZMAN: Well, you know, I think one of the things we have to be cautious about with any research regarding infidelity, is that people don't tell the truth about whether they've had affairs or not. But I think, you know, if you remember that 40 percent of people have had - of relationships have been involved in infidelity, that's just one of the partners. So about 25 percent of men may have had an affair at some point in their life; 15 percent of women. Some statistics will say 70 to 90 percent. It really also varies in terms of how you want to define an affair. And more and more these days, people are having intense emotional relationships with people they've never even met, or sexual relationships over the Internet with people they haven't met.

MARTIN: I was going to ask you about that. I was going to ask if the circumstances of what is seen as infidelity have changed because of the rise of social media, because people have more - what would I say? - social freedom because of social media.

HALTZMAN: Well, 10 years ago, the most common complaints that I heard had to do with people in the workplace. And that has entirely shifted, whereas the great percentage of people are getting into contact with me because their partner has been texting somebody, receiving emails, spending time messaging them on Facebook. It really has shifted how we meet people and secondarily, how we sustain connections with people after we've met. So I think it really has changed dramatically, even in the last 10 to 12 years.

MARTIN: One of the issues that you address in your book, that you say comes up often, is the argument that humans actually aren't meant to be in monogamous relationships. The argument is that people used to die sooner than they do now, that people didn't live as long, that there was - generally partners, you know, didn't survive as long as they - women died in childbirth, men died in war - and that monogamy is kind of an impossible idea. What does your research say about that?

HALTZMAN: Well, you're absolutely right. A lifetime commitment, if you married at the age of 15, was another 20 years. And now, a lifetime commitment, if you marry at the age of 25, may be 75 years. And - well, that's being very hopeful that you'll live to But I think the bigger question is, so are we biologically inclined to have one particular partner for life? And only something like 5 percent of vertebrates and mammals are monogamous.

So it may well be that, if our philosophy is that we want to spread our DNA and maintain our species, the philosophy - we may, in fact, be designed to have multiple partners. But my point is - that to say you're biologically inclined toward something is not the point. We're biologically inclined to do a lot of things - walking around naked, peeing in our garden of our neighbor, even eating food off of someone else's table when we go to a restaurant. But we don't do those things because we're part of a social organization.

And being married is making an individual commitment to stay with one person. And even if biologically, we're attracted to somebody else, I don't think that that's an excuse for leaving that marriage and having a relationship with someone outside of it.

MARTIN: Well, what is - do you have a values perspective on this of whether infidelity is just, by definition, harmful to marriage because there was some people - I think, in fact, we've heard from a number of people who said that they don't think it is; in fact, a number of people have said that they think that their affairs, relationships outside of marriage, have actually strengthened their marriage. So can I just ask your point of view on this?

HALTZMAN: Well, I do take a pretty strong position. I take what I would call a pro-marriage position. I believe that we are elevated as humans, and as parts of a couple, to keep our promises and to work hard to maintain relationships. There's a practical issue, which is that when you go from partner to partner, it may be a wonderful opportunity to have lots of great sexual experiences. But it erodes the capacity to have a deep and a fundamentally, you know, profound experience with one partner over the course of a lifetime.

So studies show, for instance, that married couples have better sex and higher - you know, in more frequency than singles. So that - the idea of staying in a marriage may ultimately help improve not only your sex life, but we have lots of studies that show it improves your health, your general well-being, your standard of living, your overall income, your resistance to disease, your reduction in alcohol and substance abuse. So there are whole host of reasons - and less risk of suicide, when people stay in married relationships.

MARTIN: I'm also interested in your perspective on the effect that infidelity has on children, even when they find out about this as adults. So I'm going to ask you to stay with us, Dr. Haltzman. Dr. Scott Haltzman is a psychiatrist. He's author of "The Secrets of Surviving Infidelity." He's going to stay with us. And we're also going to hear from people who have experienced infidelity, and they are going to tell us their stories. That's just ahead on TELL ME MORE, from NPR News. I'm Michel Martin. We hope you'll stay with us.

    Reddit surviving infidelity

    David Letterman is just the latest public figure who has admitted to having an affair — or in his case, multiple liaisons.

    The popular talk-show host&#;s cringe-worthy confession has led to the usual outpouring of head-shaking, tongue-clucking, eye-rolling and wisecracks around office water coolers and television sound stages.

    While Letterman&#;s mistake is magnified by his fame and our culture&#;s obsession with celebrity stumbles, he now faces the same challenge thrust upon rank-and-file philanderers: repairing the devastating betrayal of trust he has wreaked on his marriage.

    That&#;s a tall order but not necessarily an insurmountable one, most therapists agree.

    Given a couple&#;s willingness to embrace communication and counseling, coming to terms with infidelity can go beyond the tropes of anger, denial, acceptance, car bomb.

    &#;Infidelity is a huge breach in the relationship,&#; says Jeff Pincus, a psychotherapist with offices in Boulder and LoDo.

    &#;For the person cheated on, it takes a certain degree of forgiveness and courage to move forward. They will need to find strength in themselves to cultivate forgiveness.&#;

    As for the person who did the cheating, &#;they need to let their partner decide the conditions in which forgiveness happens,&#; Pincus says. &#;There must be behavioral changes and greater accountability. And they have to accept that and answer to their partner.

    &#;There will be a shorter leash, if you will.&#;

    Unfavorable stats

    The statistics on infidelity are deflating. According to a survey by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, percent of married men said they had been unfaithful, along with percent of women. Other surveys double those figures. Moreover, most studies indicate that only 35 percent of unions survive an affair.

    So why do people stray? There are several reasons.

    &#;The biggest is probably naivete,&#; says Susan Heitler, a clinical psychologist at Rose Medical Center in Denver. &#;People who cheat on their spouse often allow themselves to be in risky situations.

    &#;Most of us know not to stand beside a rushing river,&#; she says. &#;But many adults naively step into a stream that looks like a pretty place, the water feels good on their toes, and they wind up getting swept away.&#;

    Infidelity is often a sign of deeper problems in a marriage.

    &#;One question I begin with is, is this a habitual thing or is there something else going on in the relationship,&#; Pincus says. &#;Was the affair a barometer? Was someone acting out? Is there something going on in the relationship that&#;s not being dealt with?&#;

    Heitler, author of &#;The Power of Two: Secrets to a Strong and Loving Marriage,&#; points to three common situations people get caught up in: reconnecting with an old flame (often a form of &#;Internet infidelity&#;); workplace relationships that turn into something more; and getting involved with a friend you&#;re trying to help, where emotional intimacy leads to the physical kind.

    &#;Infatuation becomes like a drug,&#; she says.

    Rona Subotnik, a longtime marriage and family therapist in California, identifies four types of philanderers.

    The serial Romeo moves from lover to lover, said Subotnik, who operates two relationship websites, surviveinfidelity .net and ronasubotnik.com.

    A second type is the person who engages in a one-time fling, say, on a business trip. This often involves alcohol and is typically followed by deep remorse.

    Then there is romantic love. in which people fall for each other and leave their spouses for the new love.

    A fourth variety is the long- term affair. It was revealed after his death that Charles Kuralt, the affable CBS correspondent and a married man, had a mistress and second family on the side.

    The bigger they are &#;

    While infidelity runs across the demographic spectrum, people in powerful positions — generally but not always men — seem particularly prone to it. Consider the politicians caught with pants at half mast: former President Bill Clinton, ex-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, presidential candidates Gary Hart and John Edwards, and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.

    Former tennis star Chris Evert and golfer Greg Norman cheated on their spouses before marrying; now the couple is divorcing.

    Movie star Mel Gibson left his wife for the woman he impregnated. Of course, Hollywood has been a showcase for drive-by sex since the days of the Stanley Steamer.

    That sort of infidelity results from straight-up narcissism, Heitler says.

    &#;My pet name for it is &#;tall man syndrome,&#; &#; she says. &#;Politics and the celebrity life give people the idea that they&#;re above ordinary mortals, so rules don&#;t apply to them.

    &#;Whoever they get involved with is so taken by the fact this person is interested that they get swept off their feet. Judgment about the implications and consequences gets wiped out.&#;

    Adds Pincus: &#;Being in a position of power demands emotional maturity in how to manage adoring admirers.&#;

    Picking up the pieces

    Surviving an affair requires couples to talk with each other, bluntly and honestly and completely.

    Counseling can be a big help.

    &#;An infidelity is a major event in a person&#;s life,&#; Heitler says. &#;It&#;s not falling down and scraping your knee. It&#;s more like breaking your leg in multiple places. Go to a professional. Even a few sessions can help.&#;

    Communication is critical. Couples who already have a knack for talking out small problems rather than bottling them up have an edge in patching up the relationship.

    &#;Both people have to sit down and go over all the details of what happened,&#; Heitler says. &#;They need to put together the puzzle pieces of what went wrong. They need to be painfully honest, get past the shame and guilt, and put it all out there.&#;

    That means all lies and covering up stop immediately.

    &#;Lying in the aftermath of infidelity is pneumonia to the affair&#;s flu,&#; Heitler says. &#;The flu is terrible but pneumonia kills you.&#;

    Not all therapists are optimistic about a couple&#;s ability to recover from infidelity.

    Elizabeth Schmitz of St. Louis has spent 26 years researching the secrets to strong marriages, interviewing thousands of couples.

    &#;In cases of infidelity, those couples never have their trust fully restored,&#; says Schmitz, who runs Successful Marriage Reflections with her husband, Charles. &#;They can learn to accommodate what happened but it never returns to that high level of trust. Once violated, it isn&#;t restored. Forgiven, yes, but never fully recovered.&#;

    Schmitz shakes her head at Letterman&#;s on-air quips after confessing he had affairs with a string of staff members.

    &#;It&#;s an issue of character even though we don&#;t want to talk about it much in this country,&#; she says. &#;Character does matter. It takes character to withstand the temptations.&#;

    But people are weak and they stumble. That fact is why counselors can make a living.

    &#;Infidelity is a big mistake,&#; says Heitler, who offers interactive workshops at po2.com and poweroftwo.org. &#;But mistakes are for learning.&#;

    &#;An effective couple maps together a plan of action of what they will do differently to prevent a problem from happening again.&#;
