Understanding & Fixing Common DIRECTV Error Messages

One of the most common questions that we receive on a daily basis is how to troubleshoot a system or deal with an error message.  The problem that we find with many of our customers is that they often have trouble interpreting DIRECTV Error Messages.  While each person that receives a system will get a booklet or link to a site that covers common troubleshooting tips, these are often misplaced or unavailable during a minor crisis.  With this in mind we have created an article that will give you direction to solving these errors that are found.

Most Common Error Messages

Error 775– DIRECTV Error message 775 will usually correspond with a frozen or pixilated screen on the users end.  The main cause for this problem is that the receiver is having trouble communicating with the satellite dish.  Before calling SeniorTV or DIRECTV customer service try these 2 simple steps.

  1. Check to make sure all connections are firmly where they are suppose to be.  A loose cable or wire could result in this message.
  2.  If all cable are intact, you have a SWiM Power Inserter, unplug it for 15 seconds that plug it back in.

Error Message 722 Service Expired– Message 722 Service Expired message is usually a software problem that can easily be fixed by refreshing your service online.  This can be done by contacting SeniorTV at 1-800-890-7770 or calling DIRECTV customer service.

Error Message 62 or 22- The usual cause of this problem is because of a network issue.  So before you go connecting or disconnecting any wires, check everything with your Internet connection.  If there are not any loose wires a good idea is to unplug your Ethernet cable from your receiver and wait 1 minute before plugging it back in.  After doing this and you still have no solutions it is best to call our customer service line so that a Network Engineer can guide you through any more troubleshooting that is needed.

Channel Not Available- The most common cause of this problem is that the channel has a program/event that has not started or is over.  If this is not the case, the channel listed may not be included on your programming package.  Also, one other common occurrence is for “blacked out” professional sports games that are not available in a certain area due to restrictions put out by that team for not selling enough tickets for the event.  This happens most often in local NFL games, where teams will blackout viewing due to poor attendance.

Error Message 762: Insert Valid Access Card- Many times an access card will get placed upside down or not put in the correct receiver.  Always make sure that the receiver is using the proper access card.  If this doesn’t work, check to make sure that the access card is placed correctly in the receiver with the chip facing down and the logo facing up.  The access card slot will be on the front or right side of the receiver depending on the model.

Error Message 920- This error message occurs when the receiver is having trouble downloading the guide information from the satellite.  The best way to solve this problem is to run a system test.  Here is how.

  1. Press MENU on your remote control
  2. Select Settings & Help
  3. Select Settings
  4. Select Info & Test
  5. Select Run System Test.

If you see an error message that includes the number 82or 83, your receiver is configured for the incorrect satellite dish. You can fix this by doing the following:
  1. Select MENU on your remote control.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Satellite.
  4. Select Repeat Satellite Setup.
  5. Select the DASH button on your remote control.

  6. Select Dish Type.
    • If the error message included the number 82, set the receiver to 03: Slimline-3.
    • If the error message included the number 83, set the receiver to 04: Slimline-5.
  7. Select Continue.
  8. Please wait a few minutes for your receiver to verify the new dish configuration.

Missing Guide Info
Your receiver has not received Guide Information from the satellite for 4 hours. Please contact DIRECTV Customer Service (920.) 

If you reset your receiver, it will usually work for a while and then you’ll see this message again.

Common scenarios

There are two common scenarios where you will see this message. If you have the DIRECTV Slimline-5 dish, this generally means that the dish does not have a clear line of sight for the 119 satellite or a component on the dish itself has failed. Take a good look not just straight ahead bout about 20 degrees to the left and right and see if there are any trees or anything blocking the dish’s view of the sky. You may not have noticed any missing programs because very few programs come from that satellite now, mostly it’s local standard-definition programming.

If you can find something to trim or move, that will generally fix the problem but if not, the solution is to change out the LNB (the front part) with a Slimline-3 version. DIRECTV has been moving agressively to take all content off that 119 satellite. The only things that are left now are some standard definition channels and sometimes some music channels. Chances are you won’t miss that stuff if you go to the new LNB. On the other hand, you will start getting reverse band content, and there will be more of that in the coming years.

If you’re on a boat or in an RV

The other scenario is less common and it involves mobile satellite dishes, such as are commonly found on RVs and boats. The instruction manual for these devices generally has you set the dish type to 18×20 (3LNB) and for most of the country that isn’t necessary. Try setting the dish type to 18″ round (go to the menu, then to Settings&Help, Settings, Satellite and choose “Repeat Satellite Setup.”) Some mobile dishes will work fine this way and some will not. Before you make any changes, make note of the settings that are there in case you need to go back to them.

Note that the instructions above are for the older non-Genie systems, as that is the most common installation in marine and mobile satellite TV. If you have a Genie, it’s fairly similar: MENU, Settings, Satellite.

Why does this happen?

For some reason, if your receiver thinks you can see the 119 satellite location, it tries to get guide data from there. I think at one point it had to do with local channels being on the 119 satellite so the feeds were somewhat different. However, if your receiver thinks you can’t see the 119 location, it will get guide data from the 101 location which is the central location that your receiver will pretty much always be able to see.

Since mobile satellite dishes can usually only see one satellite at a time, they don’t tune to the 119 satellite often enough to get the data they need.

Meaning Authorization or Paring Expired Issue

Meaning Wrong or Missing RID Number

Error code 727

Meaning Program Not Available in Your Area

Solution Have DIRECTV verify address and resend authorizations. If still not available have Customer Service check for Blackouts or FCC Viewing Restrictions. Please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372.

Error code 731 Meaning Access Card Full

Solution Please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372.

Error code 732

Meaning IPPV Purchase Limit Reached IRD needs to call to download PPV information.

Solution Once it is downloaded the limit will be once again available. If the issue is not resolved, please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372. Error code 733

Meaning IPPV Ordering Disabled

Solution 60 days with no callback. To resolve callback issue, Customer Service will need to resend all authorizations. Please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372.

Error code 734

Meaning Unable to Request IPPV. IPPV flag set to No in the billing system.

Solution Please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372.

Error code 736

Meaning IPPV (Interactive Pay Per View) has been disabled due to STB not successfully completing a callback in 60 days.

Solution Either resolve callback issue or disable IPPV flag and resend all authorizations. Please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372.

Error code 741

Meaning PPV Data was Missing. Conflict between your current billing information and authorized services.

Solution PPV event, day and time needs to be escalated by Customer Service to the DIRECTV Support Center; resolution is normally 1 business day. Please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372

Error code 743

Meaning PPV has expired.

Solution 24 Hour rental period has expired for previously ordered PPV. No fix or refund.

Error code 744

Meaning Loss of Programming. IRD is not getting authorization.

Solution Need to reset receiver. Please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372.

Error code 745

Meaning Access Card or Reader may be Defective. Access card has had temporary problem processing data.

Solution Remove the access card from the receiver, wait 10 seconds, insert the access card back into the slot. Make sure the card is inserted logo side up and the arrow side inserted first. Reset the receiver by pushing the red reset button. This will be located on the front, right side of the receiver behind a small door or on the right side of the receiver by the access card slot.

Error code 746

Meaning Possible Data Corruption. Receiver had a temporary problem processing data.

Error code 747

Meaning Unable to Complete OSD when ordering or viewing PPV. OSD says Unable to complete this transaction.

Solution Have DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372 resend authorizations, then reset the receiver by pushing the red reset button. This will be located on the front, right side of the receiver behind a small door or on the right side of the receiver by the access card slot.

Error code 749

Meaning Multiswitch Problem

Solution Make sure DIRECTV multiswitch has power plugged in and all cable connections are hand tight connected to the switch. Reset the receiver by pushing the red reset button. This will be located on the front, right side of the receiver behind a small door or on the right side of the receiver by the access card slot.

Error code 750

Meaning Service Not Active

Solution Needs to have HD access to be able to view OTA channels. Reset the receiver by pushing the red reset button. This will be located on the front, right side of the receiver behind a small door or on the right side of the receiver by the access card slot. Error code 751

Meaning Wrong or Missing Receiver ID Number

Solution Contact DIRECTV to verify actual receiver ID against the Billing System. Have DIRECTV resend all authorizations. Please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372.

Error code 752

Meaning Information Update Error. Receiver cannot accept a software download or new data updates with the current access card. This message may appear when access cards are being re-paired with IRDs.

Solution Reset the receiver by pushing the red reset button. This will be located on the front, right side of the receiver behind a small door or on the right side of the receiver by the access card slot. Error code 761

Meaning Insert Your Card or MRR Service.

Solution Access card may not be all the way in the IRD. Remove the access card from the receiver, wait 10 seconds, insert the access card back into the slot. Make sure the card is inserted logo side up and the arrow side inserted first.

Error code 762

Meaning Insert valid access card or MRR Service. Receiver & Access card are not communicating

Solution Remove the access card from the receiver, wait 10 seconds, insert the access card back into the slot. Make sure the card is inserted logo side up and the arrow side inserted first. If code reappears, please call DIRECTV at 1-877-389-5372. If both fail you may need a replacement access card or receiver. Please call Groove Entertainment at 801-994-3642.

Error code 763

Meaning Access Card Expired. Access card is an older version (period) card.

Solution Remove the access card from the receiver, wait 10 seconds, insert the access card back into the slot. Make sure the card is inserted logo side up and the arrow side inserted first. Error code 764

Meaning Wrong Access Card Inserted Access card in Receiver does not match what is listed with authorization system.

Meaning Please insert your new access card.

Error code 771A

Meaning Problem Communicating w/ Dish

Solution SWiM power inserter may not be plugged in or receiving power. Verify system has power to all power inserters and switches.

Error code 771B

Meaning Problem Communicating w/ Dish or too many receivers or tuners are connected to the SWiM.

Error code 772

Meaning No guide data. Possible signal or broadcast issue. Occasionally seen after rain fade.

Solution If the error code reappears after an hour, additional trouble shooting will be required. Please call Groove Entertainment at 801-994-3642.

Error code 775

Meaning Problem Communicating w/ Dish. SWiM power inserter may need to be plugged in. The network can't detect the SWiM due to power loss to the SWiM.

Solution SWiM power inserter may not be plugged in or receiving power. Verify system has power to all power inserters and switches. Verify all connections are tight and in good condition.

Error code 776

Meaning Problem Communicating w/ Dish. Too many receivers or tuners are connected to SWM switch or SWM channels are failing.

Error code 777

Meaning IPPV Ordering Disabled. 60 days with no callback, either resolve callback issue or disable IPPV flag and resend all authorizations.

Error code 780 Meaning Access Card Full
