Top Tier Hunter DPS build for World of Warcraft Raids in Patch 8.2.0
You can find all our Pocket Guides for other World of Warcraft classes right here: Best WoW Builds
Spec Overview
Survival Hunter is currently the second best DPS class in World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. It ranks #2 on our WoW DPS Tier List Unlike the other two Hunter's specializations, Survival is melee and offers unparalleled mobility for a melee character. At the same time, it has a very high single-target and AoE DPS and is one of the most well-rounded classes in World of Warcraft. Survival Hunter can also control Pets, and you can time your powerful attacks with them. Survival Hunter utilizes two-handed weapons, mainly Spears and Staves, and if you decide to min-max your build, it appears that Gnome race leads by a small margin on the DPS charts.

Basic Survival Hunter Rotation
Survival Hunter's rotation may seem complex at first because of various effects Wildfire Infusion can have, and how it's affected by
Alpha Predator. If you have played other builds, you may see how it affects the decision making for Survival Hunters.

Welcome to the Survival Hunter DPS guide for World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a. In this guide, you will learn about playing a Survival Hunter in a raid. The guide includes Talents, Glyphs, Gems, Enchantments, Add-ons, Gameplay & Skill rotation tips.
Talent Tree
Glyphs
Major Glyphs
Minor Glyphs
Gems
Gems are situational and depend on the build and equipment. They are used to reach the required stat caps.
Yellow gems should be picked depending on the required stats. Hit rating should be a priority.
Enchants
Rotation
Survival Hunters don’t have a rotation, just some basic rules.
Stat Priority
Hit -> Agility -> Crit -> Attack Power & Armor Penetration -> Haste
Hit cap for raids is 8% (263 rating). New hunters should aim for at least 5% (164 rating) to always hit level 80 mobs. 3% can be obtained from Focused Aim, another 1% from Draenei passive Heroic Presence.
Agility is the main stat for Survival Hunters. No cap here, stack as much as possible as it converts into damage. Next, you should aim for 60% Crit Chance while buffed. Haste is down the list, probably one of the least required stats in the build.
Pets
Now, let’s talk about Pets.
First of all, we have to decide which pet do we need. In terms of PVE and Raiding our top 3 pets are:
- Wolfs – Furious Howl is what makes this pet #1
- Wasps – Sting can be a powerful debuff, but it doesn’t stack with similar effects on the target.
- Raptors & Cats – Less DPS than Wolfs and Wasps, but still viable.
The talent tree for our pet is Ferocity. Unlike Beast Mastery Hunters we can’t tame Exotic Creatures and don’t have those extra 4 talent points.
Don’t forget to use Kill Command and other pet skills when you can!

Introducing the Survival Hunter
Survival is the Melee Hunter spec. It is a relatively mobile Melee spec with a lot of heavily themed abilities. It has a very unique playstyle compared to any other Melee spec, and it is also one of the least played specs in the game, although this is not because it is bad by any means.

Leveling a Survival Hunter
If you want to play a Survival Hunter, but currently do not have one at max level, you can check out our leveling guide for tips on your journey.
Survival Hunter Leveling Guide
Once you reach max level, it can be somewhat overwhelming to completely change the way you play by suddenly implementing a large number of addons in a short space of time, especially if they have a heavy visual impact on your UI. We recommend using some of the more basic addons recommended on our Addons page below while leveling, so that you have more time to get used to them during the easier phases of playing your class.

Basics of Survival Hunter Gameplay
Survival Hunter is a spec that is heavily about Focus management, and knowing your priorities.
The core of the gameplay is generating Focus with Kill Command and spending it with
Raptor Strike/
Mongoose Bite, as well as casting
Wildfire Bomb off cooldown and maintaining your
Serpent Sting DoT. The difficulty of the spec comes from knowing when to ignore Wildfire Bomb and Serpent Sting in favor of casting
Mongoose Bite (the popular, meta talent) to maximize your benefit from its
Mongoose Fury buff.
If you are an absolute beginner to the spec, but would like to learn the basic fundamentals of the class, recommend looking through the Spell Summary first, as well as the Easy Mode page linked below.

How to Gear Up A Survival Hunter
Despite the fact that gearing has become more challenging, due to the huge number of variables that depend on your character, you can find information on how best to gear as Survival on our dedicated gearing page, which includes the current Best in Slot from this tier.
Survival Hunter BiS and Gear
Once you have started to gear, you will need to make sure that you have the appropriate consumables, gems, enchants, and more. We have a dedicated page for exactly this, as shown below, as well as the stats page, where you can find more information on the possibility of a changing stat priority and the necessary changes you may need to make for consumables.

Talent Choices for Survival Hunter
Talents can be freely changed when out of combat and in a rested XP area (such as an inn or a capital city). Moreover, Tome of the Still Mind and
Codex of the Still Mind can be used to temporarily allow players to change talents anywhere, as long as they are out of combat.

Talent Cheat Sheets for Survival Hunter
These talent recommendations are based on simulations and logs/statistics to help you pick the best choice for any situation.
3.1.
Best Single-Target Talents for Survival Hunter (NTA Build)
This is the best Survival build for almost all raiding and single-target fights.
3.2.
Best AoE and Mythic+ Talents for Survival Hunter (WFI Build)
This is our recommended Survival build for encounters with cleave and intermittent AoE, as well as Mythic+ dungeons.
4.
NTA vs WFI
NTA and WFI refer to two completely different Survival Hunter builds. Both are covered in this guide. In addition to these names, you may see them referred to as "VV" or "AP", which is determined by whether Alpha Predator or
Viper's Venom is being used.
NTA is a single-target focused build that uses the Nesingwary's Trapping Apparatus Legendary which gives it its name. Combining this Legendary with
Birds of Prey, it is possible to extend the
Coordinated Assault buff for long periods of time. This build is the bread and butter of competitive Survival Raiding. It is one of the most complicated, but also rewarding DPS builds in World of Warcraft.
WFI is an AoE-build that uses the Wildfire Infusion Talent. A variety of Legendaries are possible for this build, but it will most commonly be
Wildfire Cluster or
Rylakstalker's Confounding Strikes depending on if you are using it in an AoE-heavy or single-target heavy context. This build is a lot easier and more forgiving than NTA, and we recommend starting out with it if you are new to the spec.
The WFI build can be used to do competitive single-target damage in raids, but the NTA build cannot be used to do competitive AoE damage in Mythic+, since the constant downtime will make it impossible to keep up Coordinated Assault consistently.

Raiding
The builds suggested above do not account for specific fights in the current raid tier. If you wish to have a boss-by-boss breakdown of talent choices, you should check out our dedicated page below.

Mythic+
Mythic+ can potentially require a mix of certain AoE and Single-Target talents, depending on affixes and other variables. If you want advice that is specific to Mythic+, you should check out our page below.

How To Use Survival Hunter Talents
Some talents will require you to play in a particular way to get the most out of them. You can find more information on how your rotation will look after selecting your talents on our rotation page below.

Best Pet for Survival Hunter
Firstly, it is important to note that all pets do the same damage. They only differ in their utility and occasionally defensive capabilities.
For Raiding and Mythic+, we recommend using a Ferocity pet in pretty much all situations. They grant you Leech, which causes you to heal yourself whenever you do damage. This self-sustain is extremely useful and makes the spec partly live up to its name in Raiding situations.
For open-world content and leveling, we also recommend using a Ferocity pet. The Special Abilities of Scalehides are generally the best for such content, due to their defensive abilities.
Cunning Pets provide a movement speed bonus, trading in defensive passives for mobility. This is useful when you are farming old, trivial content.
You can see a list of all pet families and their special abilities on the //www.icy-veins.com/wow/survival-hunter-pve-dps-spell-summary page of this guide.
6.
Tier 1 (Level 15) Talents for Survival Hunter
This row consists of talents that improve your DPS in various ways.
Viper's Venom is most commonly used with
Birds of Prey-based builds for pure single-target situations and should be your default pick for those. In some gear combinations, it can also beat
Alpha Predator for
Wildfire Infusion-based builds and AoE, but this is not very common.
Alpha Predator should be used for pretty much all situations where you are also using
Wildfire Infusion, such as cleave fights, AoE, or fights with irregular uptime that prevent the use of
Birds of Prey.
Terms of Engagement should never be chosen.
7.
Tier 2 (Level 25) Talents for Survival Hunter
This row consists of talents that improve your DPS in various ways.
Guerrilla Tactics should be chosen for all situations.
Hydra's Bite should never be chosen.
Butchery should only be chosen for purely 2-target situations.
8.
Tier 3 (Level 30) Talents for Survival Hunter
This row consists of talents that improve your utility, mobility and survivability.
Your choice of talent in this tier is mostly situational, but for general survivability in raids and dungeons, we recommend Natural Mending by default.
9.
Tier 4 (Level 35) Talents for Survival Hunter
This row consists of talents that improve your DPS in various ways.
Bloodseeker should be chosen for all WFI build situations.
Steel Trap is an essential part of the NTA Build and is best when combined with
Nesingwary's Trapping Apparatus, and
Birds of Prey.
A Murder of Crows should never be chosen.
10.
Tier 5 (Level 40) Talents for Survival Hunter
This row consists of talents that improve your utility, mobility and survivability.
Your choice of talent in this tier is mostly situational, but for general survivability in raids and dungeons, we recommend Posthaste by default.
11.
Tier 6 (Level 45) Talents for Survival Hunter
This row consists of talents that improve your DPS in various ways.
Tip of the Spear should be chosen for mixed situations, such as raid fights with some AoE moments, or 2-3 target cleave situations.
Mongoose Bite should be chosen for all single-target situations.
Flanking Strike should be chosen for all heavy AoE and Mythic+ situations.
12.
Tier 7 (Level 50) Talents for Survival Hunter
Tier 7 talents offer you a choice between 3 talents that increase your DPS.
Wildfire Infusion should be chosen as part of the WFI build to which it gives its name. It is the default AoE build and is strong for single-target as well.
Birds of Prey should be chosen as part of the NTA build when paired with
Nesingwary's Trapping Apparatus and
Steel Trap, which is the best build for single-target and most raiding.
Chakrams should never be chosen.

- 10% more experience gained while leveling.

With the benefits of enabling War Mode for leveling and PvE content, it is recommended to enable the feature to maximize your leveling and rewards at maximum level. However, you will make yourself available for open world PvP, and the possibility to be "ganked" while leveling or doing World Quests exists.

Survival Hunter War Mode Talents
In this section, we will rank the PvP talents best for leveling and doing solo / small group PvE content. Below is a ranking of all PvP Talents for Survival Hunter.
13.1.1.
Survival Hunter PvP Talents
Sticky Tar reduces the melee attack speed of enemies affected by your
Tar Trap by 80% for 5 seconds. This can be used to significantly weaken melee attackers when you are close to dying.
Dragonscale Armor causes magical DoT effects to do 20% less damage to you. This is a decent survivability option.
Survival Tactics causes
Feign Death to clear all harmful magic effects from you. It also reduces all damage taken by 99% for 1.5 seconds. This is useful for narrowly avoiding death from caster mobs, especially when they have already fired a spell at you.
You can consider the other options to be essentially down to preference.

Pet Talents
Pets do not have talent trees. Instead, different types of pet belong to one of three difference specs: Ferocity, Tenacity, and Cunning.
Each specialisation grants your pet a few specific abilities. Currently, there is no DPS difference between the different pet specs. The only differences are in utility.

Recommended Talents
Boss specific recommendations and strategy:
Raid BossesTalents Discussion
Tier 1 (15)
Viper's Venom gives your Raptor Strike a chance to make your next Serpent Sting cost no focus and increases its initial hit dmg by 250%. This is currently your strongest single target option if coupled with the Nesingwary's Trapping Apparatus trapping build.
Terms of Engagement changes Harpoon into a DPS ability which applies a bleed, restores 20 focus over 10 seconds, and has the additional effect of resetting harpoon's cooldown if anything nearby dies.
This talent is under-tuned and very clunky to use due to the harpoon having a minimum range.
Alpha Predator increases Kill Commands' damage by 30% on top of giving it a second charge which smoothes out survivals rotation with the added bonus, making your rotation a lot more forgiving. This is your best talent in this row if you are not playing the trapping build.
Raiding:Viper's Venom / Alpha Predator
Mythic+:Alpha Predator
Tier 2 (25)
Guerrilla Tactics is the best overall talent in this row for both m+, raid, and even PVP. This talent makes your rotation a lot less clunky due to it letting you slightly hold bombs. This talent also synergizes well with your Wildfire Infusion talent and the Flame Infusion conduit.
Butchery changes your Carve into a harder-hitting AoE spender, which still reduces the cooldown of your Wildfire Bomb. Unfortunately, this talent is under tuned and performs badly even with the Butcher's Bone Fragments legendary.
Hydra's Bite increases your Serpent Sting damage by 20%, and Serpent Sting now fires 2 additional Serpent Sting on 2 nearby targets. Unfortunately, this talent is under-tuned and performs badly even with Viper's Venom talent.
Raiding: Guerrilla Tactics
Mythic+:Guerrilla Tactics
Tier 3 (30)
Trailblazer gives you a buff that increases your movement speed by 30% if you didn't attack in the last 3 seconds. This talent is generally pretty niche and only sees play on bosses with intermissions where the boss is untargetable, and there's nothing to hit for extended periods of time.
Natural Mending reduces your Exhilaration cooldown by 1 second for every 20 focus you spend. This is your go-to raiding talent, and it can also be used in m+ if you don't plan on going for any skips.
Camouflage give you a stealth for 1 minute while healing you for 2% of your max health every second. This can only be used while out of combat, so it has little to no use in raids, but it is your go-to m+ talent for skips.
Raiding:Natural Mending / Trailblazer
Mythic+:Camouflage / Natural Mending
Tier 4 (35)
Bloodseeker passively makes your Kill Command apply a bleed to targets hit and increases your auto attack speed by 10% for every bleeding enemy around you. It is worth noting that the passive attack speed can be any bleed, including Wildfire InfusionsInternal Bleeding or even bleeds from other specs such as Guardian druids Thrash or rogues Garrote.
This is the best talent in this row unless you're playing the trapping build.
Steel Trap hurls a damaging trap which roots and bleeds enemies hit by it. This talent should only be used with the Nesingwary's Trapping Apparatus legendary for an additional rotational trap.
A Murder of Crows summons a flock of crows to your target, which damages your target over 15 seconds. If your target dies while affected by A Murder of Crows, the cooldown is reset.
Unfortunately, this talent is very under-tuned, so it is never worth playing.
Raiding:Steel Trap / Bloodseeker
Mythic+:Bloodseeker
Tier 5 (40)
Born To Be Wild is a niche talent that reduces the cooldown of your Aspect of the Turtle, Aspect of the Cheetah, and Aspect of the Eagle by 20%, which let them sometimes line up with raid mechanics better.
Posthaste makes Disengage free you from all slows and roots and increases your movement speed by 50% after casting it. This talent massively increases your mobility and is, therefore, your best raiding talent in this row.
Binding Shot fires down an arrow that roots all targets trying to escape the 5-yard zone for 8 seconds. While Binding Shot has some niche uses in raids, this talent really shines in m+ and is, therefore, a must-have for it.
Raiding: Posthaste
Mythic+: Binding Shot
Tier 6 (45)
Tip of the Spear increases Raptor Strikes damage by 20% for each Kill Command cast, stacking up to 3 times. This is your best talent for a mix of single target and AoE.
Mongoose Bite changes your Raptor Strike into Mongoose Bite. Casting Mongoose Bite grants you Mongoose Fury, a 14-second stacking buff that increases the dmg of consecutive Mongoose Bites by 15% up to 5 times.
Additional stacks don't increase the duration of this buff.
This talent is the highest performing single target option for this row, and it really shines in the Nesingwary's Trapping Apparatus build.
Flanking Strike is a hard-hitting ability that also regenerates 30 focus for you and your pet. This is your best talent for only AoE situations but generally lacks in single target compared to the other options.
Raiding:Mongoose Bite / Tip of the Spear
Mythic+:Tip of the Spear / Flanking Strike
Tier 7 (50)
Birds of Prey increase the duration of Coordinated Assault by 1.5 for each Raptor Strike, Mongoose Bite, Carve, or Butchery cast on the same target that your pet is attacking.
This is your best pure single target option in this row and is especially strong with the Nesingwary's Trapping Apparatus build.
Wildfire Infusion changes your Wildfire Bomb into Pheromone Bomb, Shrapnel Bomb, and Volatile Bomb randomly cycling through all 3 of them.
If a target is affected by Pheromone BombKill Command will always reset its cooldown.
Targets affected by Shrapnel Bomb and are hit by Raptor Strike, Mongoose Bite, Carve, or Butchery are affected by a bleed which stacks up to 3 times.
And Volatile Bomb refreshes the duration of Serpent Sting, and for every target affected by Serpent Sting, Volatile Bomb will additionally explode, dealing aoe damage an additional time.
This talent is great for AoE since all 3 bombs count as different spells. This lets you stack multiple dots on targets which aren't possible without this talent and is, therefore, your go-to m+ talent.
Chakrams hits all targets in a line between you and your target.
Raiding:Birds of Prey / Wildfire Infusion
Mythic+:Wildfire Infusion
