In 2017, while I was traveling through India, a friend from the northeastern state of Assam told me about the communities of Lost Tribe Jews in the neighboring state of Mizoram. Having grown up in a Jewish family without ever fully embracing the religion of my observant parents, I was intrigued and wanted to know more.

Lost Tribe Jews, I soon learned, believe they are descended from the 10 tribes of Israel that were exiled from the ancient kingdom of Israel by Assyrians around the eighth century B.C. I decided to seek out members of the Lost Tribes and see if they would allow me to photograph their rituals and daily lives.

Image

A few weeks later, I arrived in Aizawl, a city built atop densely forested hills. I called a contact from one of the local congregations and arranged a meeting. When two representatives arrived at my hostel, I explained my interest in their community and my wish to photograph their religious services and rituals. They seemed open to the idea but were noncommittal; they would have to talk to the other members before letting me know their decision. The next morning, they called and said that one of the congregants had passed away and invited me to photograph the funeral.

After the funeral, the members of the Shalom Tzion Synagogue welcomed me into their community with an enthusiasm I had never before encountered in any of my documentary projects — and nor have I since. They had only limited contact with other Jewish people and had never met a photographer interested in their community before. There was a mutual curiosity between us, and I found myself answering many questions they had about my upbringing and what life was like in Israel, where I had worked for a number of years as a photographer and journalist.

One of the members of the congregation in Aizawl was from Chin State, in western Myanmar. He told me of a small group of Lost Tribe Jews in Kalay, a small city in the Sagaing Region of his home country. After my time in Aizawl, I decided to find my way there.

After a harrowing series of bus rides lasting more than 24 hours, I arrived in Kalay — a flat, tropical city surrounded by expansive farmlands — and was met by a few Lost Tribe members. I was sleep deprived and dazed by travel, but they informed me that the entire community was eagerly awaiting my arrival at their synagogue. We rode over on motorbikes.

The temple, just outside the city, was a two-story wooden building with thatched bamboo walls and a sheet-metal roof, surrounded by fields. Inside, I met with the 20 or so members of the community who promptly asked me to deliver a speech, which — after spending time with the Lost Tribe communities in Mizoram and obliging similar requests — wasn’t entirely unexpected.

I managed to put some words together in my haggard state and was then treated to a lovely meal that had been prepared by the community in the temple’s backyard.

The community there — which dates to the 1980s, when a group of Christians converted to Judaism — was more isolated than the ones I had come to know in India. They had never before encountered a foreigner, they said, let alone someone who was both Jewish and interested in photographing their community. And yet here, again, I experienced a mutual curiosity and was granted intimate access to their lives.

The Lost Tribe Jews in northeast India and northwest Myanmar are a small minority, numbering less than 10,000, by some estimates. They are easily missed among the region’s Christian and Buddhist populations.

Many of the Lost Tribe communities in northern India formed in the 1950s. British missionaries had converted most of the local population to Christianity, and some of the converts saw connections between the rituals of their old practices and those of the ancient Jews they had read about in the Old Testament.

Eventually, the belief that their ancestors were a tribe of exiled Israelites began to spread.

In the 1970s, thousands of people from the Shinlung tribe in northeast India began taking up the practices and rituals of the Jewish faith. With the help of Eliyahu Avichail, a rabbi who traveled the world in search of Lost Tribe communities, some began moving to Israel — though not without facing skepticism from Israelis who questioned their motives, their sincerity and their historical ties to Judaism.

Rabbi Avichail named the group Bnei Menashe, meaning Sons of Manasseh, which was one of the 10 lost tribes.

The Jews I met in Aizawl told me that they face some discrimination in India. It is hard for them, for example, to find jobs that will allow them time off to observe the Jewish Sabbath and other holidays. Many Lost Tribe members said they no longer feel that they belong in their native countries. Almost all expressed a desire to make aliyah — to immigrate to Israel, the land they believe to be their true homeland as promised to them by God.

Over the last 30 years, thousands of members of the Lost Tribe communities in northeast India have relocated to Israel — partly because, in 2005, the Bnei Menashe were officially declared to have descended from the original tribe of Manasseh.

Initially, I was interested in how Lost Tribe Jews were redefining what it means to be Jewish — by asserting their faith and gaining acceptance by the Israeli government. The existence of these communities complicates notions of Jewish identity while emphasizing its malleability.

But as I spent time photographing and speaking with members from the Lost Tribes, I found myself moved by the sincerity with which they brought the Jewish faith into their lives.

And lately, I find myself returning to the memory of the morning I spent photographing Shabbat services at the temple in Kalay — and how the congregation’s Hebrew prayers blended with the sounds of church bells and Buddhist chants resonating in the distance.

‘This Is A Step Toward Healing For Us’ Family Reacts To Arrest Of Suspects In Murder Of Israeli Tourist, Efraim Gordon

BALTIMORE (WJZ) —  A community on edge now able to breathe a sigh of relief after Baltimore Police announced the arrest of 3 suspects in connection to the murder of Israeli tourist, Efraim Gordon.

“This is a step toward healing for us,” said Sarah Marshall, Efraim Gordon’s cousin. “Because as long as they were out, we definitely felt unsafe.”

Police said they have arrested and charged a 16-year-old male, a 17-year-old male, and 18-year-old, William Clinton III, of Baltimore in connection to Gordon’s murder.

“It’s tragic that we have teenagers committing crimes like this,” said Howard Libit, Executive Director of Baltimore Jewish Council.

In the early morning hours on May 3, Gordon was shot and killed in north Baltimore while standing on his aunt and uncle’s doorstep in the 3700 block of Fords Lane.

“First I heard the shot, I saw them running, I didn’t know what had happened,” said Shneur Marshall, a relative of Efraim Gordon.

Shneur Marshall recounts the terrifying moments that traumatized the neighborhood. “One family member was doing CPR until responders came,” said Marshall.

Homicide detectives were able to identify the suspects through video footage and physical evidence.

City leaders commended the diligent work of detectives in this case and the community.

“This shows that when you have the community and city and police working together… this is the result you end up with, you end up with crime being solved,” said Councilman Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer, Baltimore City.

“It’s a reminder that we’re only going to solve our city’s crime problem if we all work together. We can’t leave it to the police alone,” said Libit.

As Gordon’s family continues to heal, they said this is not over yet and hope justice will be served in court.

“You can’t kill someone and then be back out on the street, it just doesn’t work that way. If you’re going to kill someone, you’re not going to see daylight again in your life,” said Sarah Marshall.

“My hope is that Efraim was such a kind, loving, humble person — that we can continue his legacy,” said Shneur Marshall.

All three suspects are currently being held at Central Booking where they have been charged with first-degree murder. They are all being held without bail.

Police released gas station surveillance video of two people of interest last month.

Officials have not confirmed if those two men shown in the video were involved in this incident.

Fans of Tablet magazine’s Jewish news and culture podcast “Unorthodox” are accustomed to hearing smart, witty banter between Mark Oppenheimer, a veteran Jewish journalist, author and professor, and his cohosts. It’s part of what makes “Unorthodox” the number one Jewish podcast on iTunes.

But Oppenheimer’s forthcoming book “Squirrel Hill: The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting and the Soul of a Neighborhood” (Penguin Random House) is a serious work about the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history, which took place on Oct. 27, 2018, killing 11 and wounding six.

Oppenheimer, who has written about religion for such publications as the New York Times, Harper’s and the Wall Street Journal, will speak with author Saima Sitwat about “Squirrel Hill” as part of the Baltimore Festival of Jewish Literature on Nov. 2. The live event will take place at the Gordon Center of Performing Arts, 3506 Gwynnbrook Ave. in Owings Mills.

Oppenheimer recently spoke with Jmore about his new book, his own family’s ties to Squirrel Hill and “Unorthodox.”

Jmore: Where were you when you when you first heard about the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre?

Oppenheimer: I was in my car outside of a large Conservative synagogue in Newton, Massachusetts. I had driven my eldest daughter, Rebecca, from New Haven to Newton to attend the bat mitzvah of a friend of hers from summer camp. We had been inside the synagogue all morning without our phones and at lunch afterwards. When we got back out to my car, I took out my phone and saw all these text messages saying, ‘Did you hear what’s happened in Pittsburgh? Did you know anyone there? Are you going to Pittsburgh?’ There were messages from editors saying, ‘Is there anything to be written about this? Do you know anything?’ And I had no idea what had gone on in Pittsburgh, so I quickly opened up a news app and saw there had been a shooting in Squirrel Hill.

    Your reaction?

[The news] hit home not only because it was another mass shooting and not only because it was at a synagogue — which is doubly terrifying for someone who’s a synagogue-goer — but also because it was in Squirrel Hill, which is where my dad grew up and his father and his father before him. My dad was the fifth generation to live in Pittsburgh. He lived there from birth to 18 years old, and I still have family there. It made it feel very personal. I’ll never forget it.

Were any of your family members at the synagogue that day?

No, our family has never belonged to Tree of Life. They were principally members of Rodef Shalom, which is a large Reform temple, about two miles away on the western edge of Squirrel Hill.

How did you go about writing the book?

Well, it began as an episode of my podcast. Immediately after the shooting, Tablet got an Airbnb and sent a bunch of people to Pittsburgh and they were writing stories. The people who work on the podcast were gathering tape, interviewing people, getting audio. I was home in Connecticut helping to produce the [podcast] episode.

We all leapt into action and produced a special episode very, very quickly. And that was very rewarding.

But I did not feel that my reporting there was done. I hadn’t been [to Squirrel Hill] yet. I felt I should go. As somebody who’s covered religion as a journalist for 25 years and has Squirrel Hill family connections, it felt like I was called to write something bigger about this. I made my first trip about four weeks after the shooting in late November, and that was the first of 32 trips to Pittsburgh I made over 18 months. I would just fly in about once a week and interview as many people as I could who had any connection whatsoever to the shooting. I interviewed shopkeepers, clergy, police officers, anyone I could find. Slowly, the book began to emerge from those interviews.

What were a couple of the most compelling stories you heard?

One of the most moving and unforgettable interviews was with a group of firefighters at the Engine 18 firehouse in Squirrel Hill. These were firefighters who knew David Rosenthal, one of two adult intellectually disabled brothers who were both killed in the shooting.

For years, David Rosenthal used to hang out at the firehouse and help them sweep up and share food with them. One of the firefighters told me that he kept replaying in his mind the question of whether if he had been on shift that morning, David would have stopped by. Maybe then, David would have hung out long enough that he never would have gone to synagogue and it would have saved his life. We can’t torture ourselves with those kinds of what ifs. But he was very torn up about David’s death and the firefighters went to the funeral and went to the shiva and made David an honorary firefighter and gave his parents a Jewish translation of the Bible from the firefighter’s union. So that was so emblematic of how Squirrel Hill envelops its people and how they treat each other as family, Jews and gentiles. You know, people from different economic classes, people from different backgrounds.

Another story that will never leave me is how when a group of Jews were performing the tahara — the washing of the corpses to prepare for burial — a woman knocked at the door of the funeral home. This was late at night, so they were a little scared about who would be knocking at the back door of a funeral home a couple of days after this mass killing of Jews. They opened the door and a woman was standing there. She stuffed a bunch of money in their hands and said, ‘This is for the couple.’ They assumed she meant [the money was] for [the family of] the Simons, a married couple who were murdered. She wouldn’t give her name and then she just disappeared into the night. People wanted to do something, they wanted to reach out and help the extended Jewish community, however they could. It went way beyond the Jews. It also went way beyond Pittsburgh. There were people who donated money from around the world, millions of dollars. That was all pretty moving.

You’ve had a very prolific career in Jewish journalism. But these days, there’s so much talk about the end of journalism and print media.

Book sales are higher than ever. But local media is suffering very, very deeply, and that’s a huge crisis, not just for democracy but also for our quality of life. Life is much, much better when we have robust thick local newspapers (or online publications) that connect people to what’s going on at the city council, at the school board, the local houses of worship. And we’ve shed thousands of those reporter jobs at small and medium-sized local papers over the past 20 years, and that’s extremely sad.

Podcasts, on the other hand, are thriving. Tell us about “Unorthodox” and how it started.

About six years ago, I saw that podcasts were continuing to skyrocket in popularity, and it seemed that there was no good English language podcast about Jewish news and culture that was grabbing people. I felt there could be a market for a podcast that allowed American Jews and allies and the ‘Jew-curious’ to listen in on the conversations that we had around the table at Tablet magazine, where we talked frankly and candidly and irreverently about all sorts of things. So we started ‘Unorthodox’ and it has grown steadily ever since. We’ve had, I think, about seven million total downloads so far. Our audience is extremely supportive, very evangelical for us, sees us through different times of life. Three of the three hosts have had babies since the podcast started; one of us has gotten married. We’ve gone through a lot with our audience and it’s a very intimate connection.

I thank the audience in the acknowledgements to the book because I think that without them, there would have been no podcast episode of about Squirrel Hill and without the podcast episode, I’m not sure there would have been a book.

The exodus begins: Rec and Parks director says he’s leaving

In a scene that’s likely to be repeated at other city offices in the coming months, Ernest Wisdom Burkeen Jr., director of Recreation and Parks, gathered his staff together on Monday and told them he was leaving.

His resignation, not yet made official, comes not long after one of City Hall’s highest-ranking officers, Khalil Zaied, handed in his papers as deputy mayor of operations.

Burkeen, who has faced health issues, told staff he will be returning to Florida, where he will manage parks and recreation for the town of Plantation.

Zaied, meanwhile, is headed for El Paso, where he will become a deputy city manager.

Another senior appointee, mayoral spokesman Howard Libit, is also jettisoning City Hall, in his case heading just a couple miles up Park Heights Avenue to the Baltimore Jewish Council.

The waning days of the Rawlings-Blake administration are beginning to weigh down on senior staff. The mayor’s term ends on December 5. For many department and division heads not protected by civil service, now’s the time to update those resumes and seek new opportunities.

For Burkeen, Rec and Parks has been home for three years, which made his tenure at the agency one of the longest in modern history. There have been three department heads and one acting head since Stephanie Rawlings-Blake became mayor. Since 1989, there have been at least 12 directors.

Recruited from Miami, where he had been parks chief before running afoul of Mayor Tomas Regalado, Burkeen was viewed as a committed, thoughtful, but at times disengaged boss.

He has had some accomplishments under his belt (he kept most rec centers open), but will leave Baltimore with his top goal unfulfilled – winning agency accreditation from the National Recreation and Park Association.

    Audits and Accreditation

Burkeen saw that seal of approval as a critical step in professionalizing the department. But his effort was doomed in part because accreditation required an annual audit of the agency’s activities.

While Burkeen supported the audits, his bosses at City Hall are allergic to them – the best they will do is quadrennial (every fourth year) audits of the larger departments.

Forced by City Councilman Carl Stokes to undergo an audit before Burkeen arrived in 2012, Rec and Parks was scheduled for a quadrennial audit last year.

The audit was due last September, but has yet to materialize. According to the administration, a draft audit has been completed and is “under review.”

    Speed Camera Mess

Zaied worked his way up to the mayor’s office after serving as director of the Department of General Services and then Department of Transportation.

In the latter position, he oversaw the speed camera program that first became mired in criticism for its inaccurate recordings, which resulted in erroneous citations to motorists, then collapsed and was withdrawn from service three years ago. That program also is currently “under review.”

Libit was recruited to the mayor’s office from KO Public Affairs, an “advocacy” firm that helped persuade the mayor to hand out $107 million in tax increment financing (TIFs) to the Harbor Point/Exelon development and various city improvements around it.

He was named the mayor’s first director of strategic planning and policy until her press spokesman, Kevin R. Harris, left. Then he was anointed both chief of public affairs and director of strategic planning and policy.

None of the departees appear to be in a rush to leave. Burkeen told his staff he’ll probably stay on at Rec and Parks until around Memorial Day, while Zaied said he wasn’t required to be at his new job until June 30. Libit is expected to leave sometime in May.

The newspaper was founded in 1919 by David Alter, and at one time it was the largest Jewish publication in the country.[1] Alter built a seven newspaper chain, but only two survived the Great Depression, including the Baltimore Jewish Times.

In 1972, the paper was taken over by Charles "Chuck" Buerger, the grandson of the founder, and in 1974 he was joined by Gary Rosenblatt as editor. The two expanded the scope of the paper's coverage, as well as the size; in the 1980s the paper regularly exceeded 200 pages, and circulation peaked at over 20,000. In the 1980s the two also acquired The Detroit Jewish News and The Atlanta Jewish Times, which were given similar makeovers.

Rosenblatt left in 1993 to become editor of New York'sThe Jewish Week. Buerger started the Palm Beach Jewish Times in November 1994, and a Boca Raton/Delray Beach edition in August 1996.[2]

Buerger died in 1996, and the paper was taken over by his son Andrew. In 1998 Andrew Buerger sold off the Florida newspapers,[2] and in 2000 he sold the Detroit and Atlanta papers to Jewish Renaissance Media.[3]

Phil Jacobs, a Baltimore native and former Jewish Times reporter who had been serving as editor of the Detroit paper, was named Executive Editor of the Baltimore Jewish Times in 1997. During his tenure, the paper published a series of investigative reports on child molestation by members of the rabbinate, and revealed that he had been molested himself as a child.[4] The series won critical acclaim, but also outrage from some members of the Orthodox community, who disputed some of the accusations made. Jacobs' experience writing the series and living through the controversy it raised in his community was chronicled in Standing Silent, a 2010 documentary film by director Scott Rosenfelt (producer of Mystic Pizza and Home Alone, among others).

In 2006 the paper won the 2005 Simon Rockower Awards for Excellence in News Reporting and Writing about Scientific and Technological Innovation Out of Israel from the American Jewish Press Association.[5]

Jacobs left the Baltimore Jewish Times in June 2011 to become editor of Washington Jewish Week. Andrew Buerger then became editor and publisher, and runs the publication's former parent company, Alter Communications, which also produces ''Baltimore STYLE'' magazine and a number of custom publications.

In 2011, the Baltimore Jewish Times underwent a major redesign and became more magazine-like, with coated glossy stock, a smaller page size and more color photography and graphics. In 2012, the publication was sold at bankruptcy auction and purchased by Route 95 Publications LLC, owner of the Washington Jewish Week.[6]
