Best ways to get ender pearls in Minecraft

Ender pearls are one of the most important items in Minecraft and serve as a crafting component for the eyes of ender.

Most people endeavor to beat it, at least at some point during their journey in-game. To beat Minecraft, players will need to get their hands on some ender pearls to craft some eyes of ender.

Ender pearls are a relatively rare item and can be obtained by killing enderman mobs, trading with expert-level cleric villagers or by bartering with piglins. The fastest and easiest way to acquire said pearls depends heavily on which version of Minecraft one has decided to play.

This article will break down the best ways for Minecraft players to acquire ender pearls across various popular versions and patch updates of the game.

How players can get ender pearls in Minecraft

Those who are playing the most updated version of Minecraft have a handful of different ways to get ender pearls.

The fastest way to get them is by bartering with piglins. Piglins are mobs who reside throughout the various biomes of the Nether. They will be hostile to players on sight, unless players are wearing at least a single piece of golden armor.

However, these mobs are incredibly useful as players can exploit their love of gold for their own personal game. When a piglin sees a gold ingot on the ground that was placed by a player, they will immediately pursue it.

After spending a few moments inspecting it, they will spit out one of 18 different items. One of the items that piglins can give in return for the gold is an ender pearl.

Ender pearls have a fairly low chance to be obtained, but gold trading with piglins is, by far, the fastest method to get a bunch of ender pearls.

This is the technique that essentially every Minecraft speedrunner uses for 1.16 Any% Random Seed Glitchless. However, players do not need to be Minecraft pros in order to take advantage of this method.

Minecraft players who are playing on an older version between 1.9 and 1.15 will want to trade with expert-level cleric villagers instead. These villagers have the potential to sell an ender pearl for five emeralds per pearl.

The villager trading method is actually quite fast, as players can farm out other items in large quantities that can be sold for emeralds such as wood logs.

Any player who is playing on a version of Minecraft that was released before 1.9, will need to get ender pearls the old fashioned way: killing endermen mobs.

These mobs can be found at night or in areas of Minecraft's Overworld with a light level of seven or less. As a fun fact, endermen are actually the only mob that can be spawned in all three dimensions of Minecraft.

Players who have already made it to the End will be able to find them frequently on end islands and the Ender Dragon boss platform.

How to get an Ender Pearl in Survival Mode

You can add an ender pearl to your inventory in Survival mode by killing an enderman.

enderman

If you are having trouble finding an enderman, you can change the time to night so that an enderman spawns. You can also summon an enderman using a cheat or you can use a spawn egg.

Once you find an enderman, you need to attack it.

TIP #1: Do not attack the enderman with a bow and arrow. The enderman will teleport away before the arrow reaches its target.

TIP #2: If you attack an enderman, try to find a location where your back is against something solid so that the enderman can not teleport behind you and catch you by surprise.

When you attack the enderman, it will turn pink as it takes damage.

attack enderman

Continue to chase and attack the enderman. Once you have killed the enderman, it will drop an ender pearl.

5 things players didn't know about Ender Pearls in Minecraft

Ender Pearls are one of the most iconic items in Minecraft. They are most commonly used to craft Eyes of Ender or to travel long distances quickly.

Ender Pearls are beneficial in many other ways and help players during their playthroughs, including PvP.

What are 5 things that players didn't know about Ender Pearls in Minecraft?

#5 - Damage

Ender Pearls can hurt Minecraft players (Image via Minecraft)

Most players who have used an Ender Pearl are aware that it can hurt them. However, some of them may not know the specifics.

Without armor, Ender Pearls will do five hearts of damage to the player. Wearing armor that is enchanted with Protection or Feather Falling will reduce the damage taken. With a high enough level, the player will barely take any damage at all and will be able to spam the Ender Pearls.

#4 - Physics

Ender Pearls have unusual physic mechanics (Image via Minecraft)

Ender Pearls have interesting physic mechanics. While the velocity and direction of each pearl thrown is randomized, pearls have a maximum vertical and horizontal range.

When thrown while sprinting at the optimum launch angle of 35 degrees, Ender Pearls have a maximum horizontal range of 54 blocks. The maximum vertical range is 30 blocks (45 in Bedrock Edition).

#3 - Endermites

Endermites may spawn whenever a player throws an Ender Pearl (Image via Minecraft)

Due to the rarity of Ender Pearls, most players are unaware that they may have an unwanted guest when throwing one.

Endermites have a 5% chance of spawning whenever the player throws an Ender Pearl. Being the smallest hostile mob, they will immediately attempt to attack the player. However, they will despawn in two minutes guaranteed.

#2 - Enderman drop chance

Endermen drop Ender Pearls in Minecraft (Image via Minecraft)

It is a well-known fact that Endermen drop Ender Pearls. However, not many players know that each Enderman killed has a 50% chance of dropping one Ender Pearl.

With each level of the Looting enchantment, they will drop one additional pearl. However, the percentage stays the same.

Many players are unaware that they can obtain Ender Pearls by bartering with Piglins.

Players with a ton of excess gold will be pleased to know that Piglins may trade 1-5 pearls when given a Gold Ingot at a rate of 5%. Players can also enjoy the other great loot that Piglins have to offer when bartering for Ender Pearls.

Ender Pearl JE3 BE2.png

An ender pearl is a smooth, greenish-blue item used to teleport and to make an eye of ender.

Obtaining[]

Mob loot[]

Enderman[]

Endermen have a 50% chance to drop 1 ender pearl when killed. The drop is increased by 1 per level of Looting, with a maximum of 4 with Looting III.

Natural generation[]

A trapped chest always containing 2 ender pearls can be found in the "fake end portal" room of woodland mansions.

Trading[]

In Java Edition, expert-level cleric villagers have a 23 chance to sell an ender pearl for 5 emeralds.

In Bedrock Edition, expert-level cleric villagers sell one ender pearl for 5 emeralds.

Bartering[]

Piglins have a 10459 (2.18%) chance to barter 2–4 ender pearls when given a gold ingot.

Usage[]

Ender pearls can be thrown by pressing use. After it is thrown, the ender pearl is consumed, and the player teleports to where it lands, taking 5♥♥♥ fall damage. Wearing armor enchanted with Protection and/or Feather Falling reduces the damage taken from the ender pearl. With enough Protection, Feather Falling, enough food and enough ender pearls, a player can travel a long distance quickly.

Ender pearls have a small cone of travel; they do not all follow the same path when thrown in the same direction. The direction and velocity of ender pearl throws is slightly randomized.

Ender pearls can travel about 30 blocks‌[Java Edition only]/45 blocks‌[Bedrock Edition only] when thrown straight up, and up to 54 blocks forward when thrown at an optimum launch angle of ~35° (on even ground).

The thrower's vertical velocity influences the throw. Hence timing a throw with a jump can increase the throwing range to 42 blocks when thrown straight up and 64 blocks forward at a 35° angle. Throwing while falling significantly decreases the range.

Ender pearls collide with all minecart types, boats, end crystals and nether portals, and travel through end portals.

Ender pearls that fall into the void disappear, and do not trigger the player to teleport. However, ender pearl entities (instead of dropped items) are not destroyed by lava and will teleport the player to the bottom of lava pools/lava oceans.

Ender pearls have a cooldown of one second before they can be used again. The cooldown is shown in the hotbar by a white overlay on the ender pearl that shrinks and must disappear before the player can use it again. If there are other inventory or hotbar slots containing ender pearls, they are covered with the white overlay as well.

Ender pearls can be thrown into End gateways to reach the outer islands of the End.

Ender pearls can be thrown into Exit portal to reach the player's spawn point.

Ender pearl teleportation makes no sound itself[Java Edition only], but does emit a "small fall" sound at the destination when applying teleportation damage to the player.

Spawning endermites[]

An ender pearl has a 5% chance to spawn an endermite when it lands. This is the only way through which endermites can spawn, without using cheats. The endermite spawns at the players position when the pearl lands, not at the pearl's landing site.

Issues[]

Issues relating to "Ender Pearl" are maintained on the bug tracker. Report issues there.

Trivia[]

  • Ender pearls can be used to teleport/move through non-solid blocks without suffocation and solid blocks by pressing against the blocks and using the ender pearl at the player's feet until the player goes through.[4]
  • In Java Edition It is possible to spawn a thrown ender pearl using commands, but it does not teleport, displaying only the ender pearl sprite and disappearing.
  • If the player throws an ender pearl and then dies before impact while the pearl is in a loaded chunk, the pearl disappears and the player is not teleported. Pearls in unloaded chunks do not disappear if their owner dies.
  • If the player throws an ender pearl in Survival mode and changes to Creative mode before the pearl lands, the player is still teleported.
  • The player is still teleported by throwing an ender pearl and entering the Nether before it lands. The pearl is not lost if an ender pearl is thrown into a nether portal and the player travels through the portal; the pearl lands and teleports the player as usual.
  • If multiple ender pearls are thrown in succession, the player can be hurt only once from fall damage within about a one-second span.
  • If a player dies from ender pearl teleportation, the death message says: "<player> hit the ground too hard".
  • A thrown ender pearl faces toward the player in first-person view, and appears rotated horizontal in third-person view. This is the case for all throwable items (ender pearl, egg, snowball, and all type of throwable potions).
  • Ender pearls and snowballs have the exact same range when fired. Therefore, snowballs can be used to predict the trajectory of ender pearls, or simply for practicing ender pearl throwing. This can be very helpful when the player has to throw ender pearls in dangerous environments, such as the Nether or the End.

Gallery[]

  • Ender pearls were formerly found in water, however endermen now teleport out to prevent damage.
