Best 3-9×40 Scope – Buying Guide

The five 3-9×40 scope that we have tested were able to give great results. However, there are still plenty more models that you can choose from. If you intend to shop around, we have decided to compile a buyer’s list for your reference.

best-3-9x40-scope-buying-guide

First, you must check if the scope can last for a long time. You should consider the structure of the scope to see if it constructed in a durable manner. It is recommended that you get a model that can withstand heavier rains and shock. Moreover, it is best if the lenses of the scope would not be prone to fogging since it can block your view. You should also take into account the length and the weight of your chosen optic sight versus your rifle of your choice since you do not want a model that can hamper your shooting capacity.

Second, since this is a scope with variable magnification, it is important that you pick a reliable model. You must be able to adjust the magnification with great ease. In addition to this, the resulting magnification must provide crisp and vivid images. While it is true that a scope with variable magnification setting is less reliable than one with a fixed magnification, it does not mean that your scope should be unreliable.

Another factor to consider is the value that is put out by the optic sight model that you choose. Moreover, the price of the scope must be justifiable so that you can maximize your purchase. You must consider the construction, performance, and reliability of the scope before putting them in your shopping cart.

There are some factors that you may also consider based on your preference. However, these are the most basic considerations to take into account when buying the best 3-9×40 scope.

Conclusion

Before officially ending our review, we still need to declare our choice for the best 3-9×40 scope.

After careful consideration and thorough examination, we have finally found the best 3-9×40 scope and it is the Bushnell Trophy XLT Multi-X Reticle Riflescope Bone Collector Edition, 3-9x 40mm.

We have chosen this model due to the incomparable reliability and easy adjustment of the settings. Moreover, the body of this scope was durable enough to withstand heavy recoil and impact. Considering its price, it was able to deliver performance beyond its cost.

With that, our review has now come to an end. We sincerely hope that we have helped you pick the best 3-9×40 scope that you can use with your firearm.

Vortex Optics Crossfire II 3-9×40 BDC (MOA) Riflescope

Our Score9.6out of 10

Vortex Optics Crossfire II Dead Hold BDC Reticle Riflescope, 3-9x40, Black (CF2-31007)

I found out that it has a flexible design, making it suit both the beginner and the high-end professional categories of riflescopes. It can deliver a fantastic shooting performance when used on long hunting trips.

I think its durable single-piece design constructed from aircraft-grade aluminum alloy plays a major role in it. It is strong and sturdy enough that it has the highest resistance to maximum magnum recoils. Despite its strength, it remains lightweight, promoting ease in maneuverability.

I also love how this scope is capable of taking .340-caliber cartridge shocks in an almost effortless manner. That is possible even if you constantly use it under tough and rough situations. The fact that it utilizes a DEAD-HOLD BDC reticle is also a big advantage as its customized dot design can eliminate your concerns regarding holdovers.

Expect it to be of help in delivering highly accurate shots regardless of elevation by lessening holdover or windage corrections.

However, I would like to complain about its tendency to distort images once it is set to 6x magnification.

Pros
  • Extremely sturdy while remaining lightweight
  • Eliminates holdover concerns, thanks to the customized dot design of its reticle
  • Lessens holdover or windage corrections for better accuracy
  • Ideal for long hunting trips
  • Guarantees smooth magnification adjustments with its precision-glide erector system
Cons
  • Somewhat distorted images for 6x magnification

If you intend to go on a long hunting trip while being exposed to extremely rough environments and conditions then go for this Vortex Optics Crossfire II riflescope because aside from its lightness, it is also extremely sturdy that it will continue to work for you for the whole duration of your trip.

Vortex Optics Diamondback 3-9×40 BDC (MOA) Riflescope

Our Score9.0out of 10

Vortex Optics Diamondback 3-9x40 SFP Riflescope Dead-Hold BDC MOA

It also has a flexible design in the sense that it works as a high-quality 3-9×40 scope for AR-15, as well as for slug shotgun, rifle, muzzleloader, and big game applications. I can also rave for the almost indestructible construction of this riflescope. It has can resist magnum recoil that well because of its strong aircraft-grade aluminum alloy built.

I am also greatly satisfied with the full multi-coating used for the scope’s lenses as such delivers bright and clear images when using it from dawn until dusk. Another praiseworthy feature is the scope’s fast-focus eyepiece, which I find helpful if you want to have an easier time focusing the reticle quickly.

Another reason why many love this riflescope from Vortex is its ability to ensure highly accurate and precise tracking and repeatability. This is all because of the scope’s precision glide erector system.

You are also allowed to reset this scope to zero after sighting it in with the aid of its metal-on-metal turrets built for precision.

However, I find the eye relief of this Vortex Diamondback riflescope slightly fussy and insufficient, though.

Pros
  • Ideal for use on various shooting and hunting ranges with holdover concerns
  • Flexible as it is compatible with different applications
  • Strong and indestructible aircraft-grade aluminum alloy built
  • Equipped with a multi-coated lens that showcases bright and clear images
  • Comes with a precision glide erector system for accuracy and preciseness
Cons
  • Slightly fussy and insufficient eye relief

If you are searching for a high-quality 3-9×40 scope under $200 then the Vortex Optics Diamondback 3-9×40 BDC (MOA) Riflescope fits your requirements as it has most of the essential qualities that a good 3-9×40 needs to possess, giving you a wise and nice return of your investment.

Nikon Buckmasters II 3-9x40 BDCamazon.comCheck price

Extremely bright sight picture
Fully multicoated lenses
Patented BDC reticle
Generous, consistent eye relief
Waterproof, fog proof, shockproof

It is even further strengthened with its waterproof, shockproof, and fog-proof properties. I like how it is created in such a way that it can satisfy the majority of shooting requirements. You can instantly sense that through its built-in anti-reflective system, which is bright enough while also compromising adjusting lenses.

With this anti-reflective capability, I am pretty sure you will enjoy this scope’s improved clarity and brightness as well as its impressive light transmission. It is, therefore, a big help in pulling out your target from its surrounding whether you decide to hunt either at dawn or dusk.

I am also glad of its nitrogen-sealed structure designed to help in ensuring that moisture does not penetrate the housing inside. I am also glad that this riflescope uses spot-on ballistic match technology as I found it capable of finding the target points precisely at different distances depending on your specific load and ammunition.

There is also a positive click reticle adjustment, which is a big help in maintaining your settings while also promoting ease in zeroing it in quickly.

Furthermore, it has a good and generous eye relief plus a see-through ballistic circle, which makes it appropriate for long-range shooting while providing regular target image in case you prefer short-range shooting.

However, one thing I dislike is that it lacks the scope rings and mount.

Pros
  • Waterproof, shockproof, and fog-proof, allowing it to handle most shooting and hunting scenarios
  • Comes with an anti-reflective system for clarity, brightness, and good light transmission
  • Prevents moisture from penetrating inside, thanks to its nitrogen-sealed structure
  • Good and generous eye relief
  • Easy and quick to zero in
Cons
  • Does not include the scope rings and mount in the purchase

Overall, I can conclude that the Nikon Buckmasters II is well-made with all the features and qualities at the right places, making it deserving of its popularity in the industry at present.

It is offered at a cheap price but you have a hundred percent assurance that its build is not compromised. It is even constructed sturdily and durably while keeping in mind precision and accuracy. With such a high level of precision, I am happy to announce that it is truly compatible even with competitive hunting.

It has an attractive design, too, which will surely motivate you to carry it with you all the time. I am so glad of the built-in adjustment system for the elevation and windage. Such components make use of ¼ MOA audible-click and sure-grip system, which is useful for proper and easy customization and adjustment.

I am also glad that the windage and elevation system features a distinctive lock mechanism, making it possible for the riflescope to hold zero. This is possible even if you are shooting using rifles with high recoil in strenuous and rough situations. Another reason why I am very happy with this scope is that it is easy to mount.

It also boasts of its lightweight build, further promoting convenient use.

However, I do not find its offered level of light transmission adequate, making it less suitable when used in dusty situations and long hunts compared to the others.

Pros
  • Budget-friendly
  • Sturdy and durable build without weighing too much
  • Easy to customize and adjust elevation and windage
  • Capable of holding zero well, thanks to the distinctive lock mechanism for the windage and elevation system
  • Easy to mount
Cons
  • Not that suitable for dusty situations and long hunts because of its somewhat insufficient light transmission

Despite that flaw regarding light transmission, I can still safely conclude that this item is the best value 3-9×40 scope because even with its affordable price, it still delivers incredible precision and accuracy.

The 30-mm main tube of this scope is also created with incredible strength and durability while also bringing out a higher range of elevation and windage adjustment. There is also an assurance of its one hundred percent shockproof, fog-proof, and waterproof structure, further improving its solid and stable structure.

Another positive feature integrated into this riflescope is its lens, which assures users of clarity of images because of its ability to supply excellent illumination and light transmission. In other words, the lens promotes clear vision even in those conditions and environments where there is poor or dim lighting.

It is also one of the best Leupold riflescopes that work well for target shooting and long-range hunting. I am also drawn into this riflescope because of its illuminated reticle, which makes it appropriate for use in lowlight conditions. It can guarantee an additional of ten minutes glassing light with the help of twilight management system.

Also, there is a motion sensor technology capable of extending the life of the battery just by automatically deactivating the light in case it gets inactive for five minutes.

One thing I dislike about this scope from Leupold, though, is its price as it is somewhat expensive.

Pros
  • Clarity of images guaranteed
  • Provides incredible illumination and quick light transmission
  • Can be used even in environments with poor or dim lighting
  • Works well for target shooting and long-range hunting
  • Boasts of a truly solid and stable structure with its shockproof, fog-proof, and waterproof nature

The Leupold VX-R Riflescope may not be suitable for those looking for a high-quality 3-9×40 scope under $300 as it costs more than that but if you are willing to spend more than three hundred bucks then you should give it a try because all the features and benefits it presently possesses make it truly worthy of your investment.

UTG 3-9×40 1″ AO Hunter Scope

Our Score7.3out of 10

UTG 3-9X40 1

Offered at a cheap price, this UTG AO Hunter scope does not skimp in terms of features and performance. It is because everything that goes into this scope seems to be well-thought-out. For instance, it is equipped with a mil-dot range estimating reticle, which many find extremely useful as it optimizes one’s aiming or targeting potential.

This can further lead to an improved shooting performance overall. I am also fond of the adjustable parallax promised by this scope. I am so satisfied with the premium and high-quality resettable and lockable turrets, too. It is because I noticed how useful such features are in the quick manipulation of the scope.

This also assures users of rapid zero adjustments and retention as this only takes around a few seconds. Another reason for the continuous positive feedback of this scope is its ability to offer a wide range of colors for the illumination of its reticle. It also has a few brightness intensities to choose from.

With that, you are allowed to pick the one that is specifically appropriate for the industry you are in. It does not also fog up that easily even if you decide to hunt on harsh and extreme weather because the whole body is sealed and filled with nitrogen.

I dislike the packaging, though, as I noticed that it is quite subpar.

Pros
  • Offered at an inexpensive price
  • Can optimize aiming or targeting potential with the aid of the mil-dot range estimating reticle
  • Comes with an adjustable parallax
  • Quick and easy to manipulate with the aid of its resettable and lockable turrets
  • Does not fog up easily

Overall, I can say that this UTG scope is a high-quality and flexible product composed of most, if not all, of the most valuable features that any great-performing riflescope should carry.

Burris 3-9×40 Riflescope

Our Score6.9out of 10

Burris 3-9 x 40mm Fullfield II Ballistic Plex Rifle Scope

It is because the built-in optical glass offers incredible clarity and brightness while assuring users of long-lasting sturdiness. I feel good about the dual spring system used in this riflescope as I noticed how effective it is in controlling recoil. With such a system, I am sure that it can hold up hundreds of AR rounds.

The overall length of this scope is also just enough to promote ease in mounting it in well-known short actions of today. It has a single-piece construction, which is sturdy and solid enough as it is reinforced with quad-seal gas seals. I am so impressed with the multicoated lens offered by this riflescope, too, as it contributes to optics clarity.

With its fog-proof, waterproof, and shockproof build, this Burris riflescope is also a sure hit as far as being long-lasting is concerned. The precision-ground lens is high in quality and bigger than other scopes, making them more capable of collecting or gathering light.

The strong, sturdy, and integrated eyepiece design used in this scope is also famous for being non-slip, promoting quick and easy field adjustment. It is lightweight and compact, too, promoting convenience in terms of maneuvering it.

One thing I dislike about this riflescope, though, is that it is slightly difficult to clean.

Pros
  • High-grade optical glass featured in its construction, which provides incredible clarity and brightness
  • Capable of controlling recoil well
  • Easy to mount, thanks to its adequate length
  • Single-piece yet sturdy construction
  • Waterproof and shockproof

You will find such issue very minor, though, once you start recognizing how this Burris scope performs in whatever field or environment you decide to use it to.

Bushnell Trophy XLT 3-9×40 Multi-X Reticle Riflescope

Our Score6.6out of 10

Bushnell Trophy XLT Multi-X Reticle Riflescope Bone Collector Edition, 3-9x 40mm

I super like how this riflescope from Bushnell is built, especially because it showcases a high level of accuracy. It has a sturdy single-piece tube structure, which is famous for being fog-proof and waterproof. This is all thanks to the O-ring sealing and nitrogen-purging structure used in creating it.

I think that the bright optic system of this Bushnell riflescope is also one of its most powerful and amazing features. It is because I noticed how effective it is in promoting excellent light transmission and clarity. The fully multicoated optics system of this riflescope is also one reason behind why it delivers the bright and clear vision.

The fact that the lens is coated with several layers also promote less reflection on the surface, further maximizing the transmission of light. The adjustable magnification and fast-focus eyepiece also ensure that you will be able to adjust it depending on what you require on a particular scenario.

Furthermore, it delivers supreme protection. It has flip-up caps designed in such a way that your lens will be fully protected from fogging and precipitation. The scope is also capable of resisting water and shock, allowing it to withstand heavy and constant uses even in poor conditions and weather.

However, some complained about the somewhat inconvenient and limited eye relief that this Bushnell riflescope provides.

Pros
  • Works as an all-around and versatile riflescope
  • Fog-proof, waterproof, and strong structure
  • Minimal surface reflection guaranteed, promoting good light transmission
  • Easy to adjust magnification and a fast-focus eyepiece
  • Supreme protection guaranteed
Cons
  • Somewhat limited and inconvenient eye relief

Considering all the positive benefits and valuable features present in this scope, it is safe to say that this product can add a touch of fun and excitement to your game hunting adventures, which makes it ideal for both casual and professional hunters.

What is a 3-9×40 Scope?

As the name states, this is a scope that has a range of magnification starting from 3x to 9x power. This type of scope is usually used on rifles chambered for smaller and less powerful rounds.

You will usually see this scope mounted on rimfire rifles like the .17 Winchester Super Magnum (.17 WSM), .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WRF), and the hugely popular .22 Long Rifle (.22 LR). Because these rounds have limited effective ranges, using overly high-powered scopes will be a bit overkill.

However, there are times when low-powered scopes are useful on high-powered firearms, as long as the ammunition it is chambered for does not have a lot of recoil. The 3-9×40 scopes are ideal for close-range or medium-range, which is up to 200 yards.

When you scope a target 200 yards away using the 9x magnification, it would seem like it is just around 22 to 25 yards away. If you zero your scope correctly, you can hit your targets every time.

What Does a 3-9×40 Scope Mean?

All the numbers in scope names have a meaning. When it comes to the 3-9×40 scope, it describes its magnification power and the objective lens size. The “3-9x” denotes the range of magnification that the scope can handle. This means it has 3x zoom at the lowest setting and 9x zoom at the highest.

This makes this particular kind of scope perfect for plinking, otherwise known as shooting at the target range. It is also best for hunting small animals and even big game. However, you need to get a pretty solid shot if you want to take down a big animal using a .22LR or similar ammunition.

The “40” is for the size (in mm) of the objective lens, which is the one that is in front of the scope. In this case, the objective lens is 40mm in diameter. This is a good size for a because it lets in quite a lot of light, thus giving you a clearer and more focused sight picture.

What Range is a 3-9×40 Scope Good For?

The 3-9×40 is a good scope for rifles chambered for rimfire rounds. These are rounds that range from the .17 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, the rare .22 Remington Special, to the .22 Long Rifle, which is undoubtedly the most popular ammunition round available.

The effective range of rimfire rounds can go from 25 yards to 200 yards, depending on the length and rifling of the barrel. Using a rifle zeroed at 100 yards and a high-velocity round, like a .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (which is a .17 cartridge that is based on a .22 WMR casing), you can hit a target of 200 yards away.

This is possible if you use the bullet drop compensation of your scope to allow for around six to eight inches of drop. If you will not be using your rifle for shooting at targets beyond 100 yards, you do not have to consider the bullet drop. The rimfire rounds are already powerful enough to hit the targets dead center.

Regardless if you are a beginner at shooting rifles or a professional with dozens of competition trophies under your belt, you should not make a small deal out of shopping for a dependable 3-9×40 scope. There are hundreds of different brands and models of 3-9×40 scopes out there.

This is mainly because .22LR rifles are popular (these are the preferred bases of this type of scope). However, not all of them perform the same way and if you are not careful, you might get a scope that will only disappoint you.

Reticle

The reticle is the most important part in any kind of scope, regardless if it is a 3-9×40 scope or not. It is the part that enables you to pick out a target and aim where your bullet will hit.

Even though some scope manufacturers use their reticle designs, they are typically based on one of the three main types, namely the duplex, mil-dot, and BDC (bullet drop compensation) reticles.

Duplex-type reticles are the best for beginners as they are easy to understand and very visible. If you have some experience shooting firearms and want something that can help with range estimation and bullet-drop compensation, then you will need to get the mil-dot or BDC reticles.

Objective lens size

The size of the objective lens will determine how much light gets into the scope, which will then contribute to the brightness and focus of the sight picture you get.

Although 3-9×40 scopes all have 40mm diameter objective lenses, you can also choose those that have bigger lenses for better light transmission. However, note that will also add a considerable amount of weight.

You can also go the other way and choose a 32mm objective lens for its compact size and lighter weight but keep in mind that light transmission will not be as good. When choosing the right scope, strike a balance between the weight of the lens versus light transmission and image quality.

Weather and shock-proofing

The .22LR rifles where 3-9×40 scopes are usually mounted on are great for hunting small to big game. This means that you will be exposing the scope to the elements. This is why you need to choose one that can thrive even in extreme conditions.

Choose a scope purged using nitrogen or any other inert gas. Doing this then sealing both sides of the scope using beefy O-rings will prevent water from getting inside. This will also prevent dust from penetrating and the possible fogging of the lenses.

Ease of use

Just how easy a scope is used is purely subjective. There are certain functions that an experienced user will find easy but those who have no shooting experience will find complicated.

There are a couple of things that you need to keep an eye out to ensure that your scope is easy to use. First of all, check if the scope you are planning to buy is easy to mount on your rifle. This means scopes that come with mounting rings that are compatible with the receiver on your rifle should be on top of your list.

Secondly, choose one that is relatively easy to sight in and can hold zero even after numerous shots so you do not have to adjust your settings continuously. Finally, the turrets should easily reset to zero so that you can start over when you make a mistake adjusting for windage and elevation.

With these tips in mind, finding the perfect scope for your needs will not be difficult at all.

(Source: [1], [2])

Conclusion

There is no denying that good 3-9×40 scopes can help you shoot farther and more accurately than ever before, which is why you need this if you own a rimfire. Even though rimfire rounds do not have a far range compared to other ammunition, they can be pretty accurate firearms when you correctly sight the scope.

Finding the best 3-9×40 scope for your particular needs may take some time and effort. However, it will be well worth it when you can start hitting targets that are beyond one hundred yards away even if you are supposed to hit only those targets that are 30 yards.

The Best 3-9x40 Scopes - Top Scopes for 2021

When it comes to serious game hunting, most of us turn to 3-9x40 rifle scopes. Whether shooting as an amateur or a professional, we all know their benefits. They’re considered among the best game hunting scopes in the world and for good reason.

For starters, their magnification power is ideal for taking down prey at long distances. With flexible zoom functions, they make it easy to hit the target whether you’re aiming at an enormous moose or a spry boar. The variety of 3-9x40 scopes on the market are tough,
resilient and often compatible with even the strongest recoil .340 cartridges.

Advice On Shopping for 3-9x40 Rifle Scopes

The only downside to using 3-9x40 scopes for hunting is it can be tricky to know where to start. There are many different types available. You can, of course, learn through trial and error like a lot of hunters. Or you could read this guide to the best 3-9x40 scopes and guarantee you get the right one first time.

1. Design and Construction

For the perfect shot, you need a build style that’s compatible with the type of game, environments and distances you’re accustomed to shooting.

The better fit your rifle scope provides for these preferred conditions, the easier it will be to use.

These days, most 3-9x40 scopes come with fog and rain resistance features as standard. Nevertheless, it’s a good idea to check for these features before you buy.

Regardless of whether you prefer to shoot in the rain or avoid it at all costs, moisture resistance is a worthwhile addition.

The exception is if you always shoot in a dry climate and really can’t afford to pay extra for these features. They’re worth having to hand, but only if you can afford them.

Otherwise, you’re not going to miss out much in warmer, mild areas. For rainy, humid climates though, they’re crucial.

Shock absorption is also worth considering especially if you’re shooting with a high recoil weapon such as the .308 Winchester or .340 Weatherby Magnum Bolt.

Tough, powerful hunting rifles like these are going to produce a serious kick. You need a scope that can effortlessly tolerate the blow.

2. Focusing System

Focusing is similarly important for a precise, customized big game shot. Don’t assume everybody else’s needs are the same as yours.

Pick a focusing system to match your individual style of shooting. It will result in improved accuracy and more rewarding shooting experiences.

There are two main types of focusing system: the knob and the collar. Collar focus applies a collar shaped marker. Knob style systems use a rounded shape that looks a little like a doorknob.

Aim Accuracy

The knob style mechanism is positioned more centrally above the scope’s eyepiece. Both can provide exceptional results. The right one for you will depend on your personal preference.

Generally, knob mechanisms are best suited to long-range shots at big targets like moose, buffalo and elk. It’s not a rule though. Plenty of people use collar focusing for this type of hunting too.

3. Valuable Features

The four most important aspects to tick off your scope shopping list are resolution, zoom, parallax and reticle capabilities.

Consider all of these before committing to a particular brand or product. As regards parallax, I’d say anywhere around fifty yards for a 3-9x40 scope if preferable.

It’s the default for a lot of these hunting scopes, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding one to match.

gun and scope Safety

As for zoom, the two options are digital and optical. Digital zoom enhances the image but comes with a trade-off for resolution. Optical zoom, on the other hand, amplifies the image with only a negligible impact on resolution.

You can pick between the options but, with so many scopes now offering both, I’d say just have the best of both worlds.

TOP 4 Scopes List

1.Nikon Buckmasters II 3-9x40mm BDC Rifle Scope

Nikon Buckmasters II 3-9x40 BDC

Nikon’s magnificent 3-9x40mm scopes are regularly referenced in discussions about the best scopes for game hunting. They’re really the gold standard for professional shooting. The Buckmasters line is particularly popular and has long-range veterans from around the world gushing about its excellence.

Nikon Buckmasters rifle scopes are designed to withstand extreme conditions. Expect the most robust fog and moisture resistance. TheBuckmasters II 3-9x40mm BDC Scope is completely weatherproof with high-level fog, rain and shock tolerances.

Aside from looking rather stylish, it comes with (92%) anti-reflective capabilities.

According to Nikon, this is what allows the scope to perform flawlessly in almost any environment or condition. I was pretty sceptical at first but, after plinking targets at medium range in the dark, I found it to be very reliable.

The view was extremely clear because the scope enables lots of light to flood in.

For game hunters who get up before dawn, performance like this is invaluable. It means accuracy doesn’t dip even in low light scenarios. I love the generous eye relief included with this Buckmasters scope.

I don’t wear spectacles but, for somebody who does, I can only imagine it creates a comfier fit than you’d find on rival products. Certainly, eye relief is important when you’re shooting heavy recoil cartridges.

If you’re not convinced yet, Nikon also offers a lifetime warranty on its Buckmasters II 3-9x40mm BDC Rifle Scope. There is a few policy conditions you might want to read up on before you buy. The only complaint I have about this attachment is the scope’s limited mounting space.

For most weapons, it’s not a problem. Though I tried it with a bolt action sniper and it felt a little awkward.

Specs:

  • Magnification – 3-9x
  • Eye Relief – 3.6 inches
  • Field of View -11.3- 33.8 ft/100 yds
  • Weight – 13.1 oz.
  • Tough, long-lasting build and intuitive design

  • 92% anti-reflective capabilities for low light

  • BDC reticle adjusts trajectory for rapid aiming

  • Comes with a lifetime warranty (some conditions attached)
  • Lack of mounting space for SOME weapons

2.Bushnell Trophy Rifle Scope 3-9x40mm

Bushnell Multi-X Trophy Riflescope 3-9X40 Matte

Bushnell is another highly respected manufacturer of rifle scopes and other hunting equipment. The brand has long been on a mission to provide the best possible quality at affordable prices. So, you can expect its hunting scopes to focus on performance and, perhaps, offer fewer luxury features than some rivals.

Bushnell describes its Trophy Rifle Scope 3-9x40mm as very easy to use, impressively accurate and suitable for both professionals and amateurs. I get the feeling they want enthusiasts to have fun with this product.

Adjusting for windage and elevation is a really speedy process that can be tailored to the user’s style via the 1/4 MOA.

Everything about this rifle scope is designed to be easy and simple. This is why it’s a magnificent choice for rookie game hunters. Whether you’re stationary or on the move, it’s never difficult to adjust the scope’s magnification or focus settings.

Even while aiming down the sights, making these changes feels natural and intuitive.

The Bushnell Trophy Rifle Scope 3-9x40mm has a fully coated lens to increase light transmission and reduce surface reflections. Whether the light conditions are optimal or undeniably terrible, it’s always easy to find your target.

I’m fond of the twelve inch tube component as it’s able to carry a saddle. Yet, it weighs a mere fourteen ounces.

It shows Bushnell has considered hunters who travel long distances on foot to reach the perfect scouting spots. This can also be seen in the inclusion of a protective cover for safeguarding against knocks and scrapes.

With the cover, you get the added benefit of a quicker return or hold to true zero as well.

The gripe I had with this scope was lack of eye relief. It’s disappointing to discover the advertised eye relief isn’t quite accurate. There was a little bit less than promised. While it doesn’t take anything away from the scope’s other great features, I personally wouldn’t recommend the product to spectacle wearers.

Specs:

  • Magnification – 3-9x
  • Eye Relief – 4 inches
  • Field of View -38-13 ft/100 yds
  • Weight – 14.3 oz.
  • One of the best game hunting scopes for beginners

  • ¼ MOA enables fast windage and elevation adjustments

  • Lens is multi-coated to allow for maximum light

  • Designed to be affordable and non-intimidating
  • Notable lack of eye relief (unsuitable for specs wearers)

3.Vortex Optics Crossfire II 3-9x40 Second Focal Plane

Vortex Optics Crossfire II Adjustable Objective Riflescopes

Now, we come to a rifle scope specifically designed for use in very extreme weather conditions. So, for starters, it’s very lightweight. It’s also remarkably durable. These two characteristics are crucial for an all-weather scope. So far, so good.

I should point out this degree of durability also comes in useful for extended hunting trips in moderately poor conditions. The accessory can withstand a lot of very persistent (if not extreme) rain.

With the Vortex Optics Crossfire II 3-9x40 Second Focal Plane, there’s no chance poor conditions are going to knock out your zero. You’ll save time and a lot of frustration. I risk sounding like a broken record, but it’s awfully resilient.

This scope is probably one of the toughest I’ve ever tested.

It’s primarily down to its one component build design. It also helps that the Vortex Optics Crossfire II is made from aircraft-grade aluminum alloy.

The outcome is an extremely lightweight hunting scope with a mostly unshakeable structure. I experimented with .340 caliber magnum cartridges to really push its limits. The scope barely flinched. You can probably push it as far as your heaviest recoil cartridges allow.

Another feature that really impressed me is the scope’s dead hold BDC reticle with its customized dot design. It comes in especially handy when switching between distances and trying to account for holdover.

What it does is enable the scope to reduce holdover and windage adjustments to the bare minimum required so you can get that flawless shot off regardless of elevation.

The clever Precision Glide Erector mechanism deserves a mention too. It ensures the rifle scope moves in and out very smoothly during magnification. There’s nothing worse than a jerky, staccato zoom as it can really put a hunter off their shot.

Again, it shows the manufacturer has put a lot of thought into designing a practical all round scope for game hunters who are out there battling real-world conditions.

To touch on a small weakness, I didn’t enjoy the scope’s parallax responses at all. The problem seems most severe when shooting offhanded. Sometimes, you’ll notice superficial image flaws when zooming beyond 6x magnification.

Specs:

  • Magnification – 3-9x
  • Eye Relief – 3.8 inches
  • Field of View -12.6 - 34.1 ft/100 yds
  • Weight – 15 oz.

Vortex Optics Diamondback Second Focal Plane Riflescopes

Best 3-9×40 Scopes Buyers Guide

3-9×40 Scopes Buyers Guide

Choosing one of the best 3-9×40 scopes out there can be bewildering. There is a huge selection that range in quality, features, and price. To help with that decision, here are some key factors you should look at from a personal perspective. By doing so, you will narrow down the choice to the best 3-9×40 scope for your needs.

Construction

Purchasing a solid, robustly constructed scope is something you must take into account. Having said that, your decision on how sturdy the scope needs to be should be dependent upon your hunting conditions.

The majority of 3-9×40 scopes out there will be fog and waterproof resistant. That is enough for many shooters. However, if you are regularly out in tough conditions, then shock-proofing must be a consideration. Those who live in environments with extreme temperatures should make sure their chosen scope will withstand these extremes.

Alternatively, if you are hunting in ‘standard’ conditions, or are an occasional hunter, then you do not need to go overboard on construction.

A caveat when it comes to recoil reaction!

This is for those shooters who regularly use a high recoil rifle. You would be very wise to ensure good shock and recoil resistance capabilities of any best 3-9×40 scope.

A final consideration on scope construction relates to Weight vs. Weapon

Take into account scope dimensions in terms of length and weight against the rifle you will be using it on. Both need to be compatible in order to ensure your shooting abilities are not hampered.

What Scope Features Suit Your Style?

Here you should be looking at four primary issues:

  • Zoom.
  • Resolution.
  • Parallax.
  • Reticle

When it comes to zoom and resolutions, you can opt to go for digital or optical.

What are the benefits of each?

  • A digital zoom helps improve the image, but you compromise on resolution.
  • An optical zoom allows image magnification without too much effect on resolution.

Opting for a scope that allows both of these zoom qualities is the way to go. You then couple this with a good quality reticle that affords accuracy and precision.

What parallax should you go for?

A standard parallax for 3-9×40 scopes is about 50 yards. Look for a scope offering this or very close to it, and you will not go far wrong.

Cost

This is an obvious consideration. It largely depends on:

  • Justifying the amount a scope will cost against use.
  • How often you use your weapon.
  • Conditions you usually encounter.

There is no need to opt for one of the best, but most expensive 3-9×40 scopes if you don’t have regular opportunities to use your weapon. Conversely, if you are a regular hunter and often encounter rough terrain then take the opposite tack. You would be wise to invest more in your chosen scope; otherwise replacement could well become a regular occurrence.

Weigh up what type of user you are. What are the usual weather conditions you go out in? Do you do a lot of poor-light hunting – i.e., at Dawn and Dusk? What terrain do you cover?

Make a full list of important scope considerations and don’t hesitate to get the opinion of more experienced hunters. By defining these personal parameters, you will quickly narrow down your preferred 3-9×40 scope choice.

When it comes to either professional or amateur wild game hunting, the 3-9×40 scopes have grown to be a staple for a lot of hunters around the world.

Their power magnification fits the sport perfectly, and the variations in zoom is ideal for accurately taking down large game like deers and wild moose.

The best 3-9×40 scopes are capable of giving the avid hunter exactly what he/she is looking for. These high-performance scopes have a very rugged construction and can withstand calibres from the standard .243 to the more high recoil .340.

However, from all the varieties that are available in the market, it can indeed be very complicated to pick the one that fits your needs the best.

That is precisely why we have compiled a guide today to help you on with your search.

And we are confident that one among them can be your choice of scope for the day.

What to Look out for Before Buying the Best 3-9X40 Scopes?

Buying the right 3-9×40 rifle scope that best suits your needs can indeed be a difficult task to accomplish without the proper know-how.

So, to help you out on your search, we will be going over some key factors in our buyers guide that you must definitely look out for.

Scope Construction

Before you invest time thinking about the more complex hardware features, you must first take into consideration the basic build of a scope, and if it will suit your hunting environment, to begin with.

Even though the majority of the 3-9×40 optics are nowadays designed to be fog and waterproof, not all of them will be able to withstand conditions like excessive heat and moisture.

But, if your hunting climate is predominantly standard, then there is no need to invest a lot in the construction. However, if the environment is usually harsh, then it’s better to make sure that the scope body is as durable as it can get.

Additionally, if you have a high recoil rifle like the .340 Weatherby Magnum Bolt action, or even something like the .308 Winchester, then shock resistance is of paramount importance.

The Focusing Mechanism

A lot of the user comfort and convenience has to do with the focusing mechanism. So, going for a scope whose focusing mechanism doesn’t fit your shooting style and needs will not offer you with the enjoyable hunting experience that you’re looking for.

And when it comes to focusing mechanisms, there are primarily two types, the collar style, and the knob style.

The collar style will allow you to employ a focusing collar, while the knob style, on the other hand, will provide a small knob right above the eyepiece.

Hence, the style you go for will heavily rely on your preferences, so, it’s necessary to study up on these two types to know which one will fit your style better.

The mechanism will also depend on what you choose to hunt. 3-9×40 scopes are basically used to hunt larger prey like deer, bears and boars, so depending on the game the preferred mechanism might differ.

The Scope Features

When purchasing one of the best 3-9×40 scopes, there are primarily four components that you should always take into consideration before making the purchase: zoom, resolution, parallax, and reticle.

The standard parallax for any 3-9×40 scope is around 50 yards, which is something you should ideally look for.

And for zoom and resolution, two options exist in optical and digital.

Whereas an optical zoom will help you magnify an image without affecting the resolution too much. The Digital zoom, on the other hand, improves the image while compromising on the resolution.

Hence, it’s wise to go for a scope that houses both zoom qualities along with a high-quality reticle for precision and accuracy.

The 4 Best 3-9×40 Scopes

1. Leapers UTG 3-9x40mm TF2+ RiflescopeUTG 3-9X40 1" Hunter Scope, AO, 36-color Mil-dot, w/ Rings

Buy on Amazon
Check Price on OpticsPlanet

If you’re looking for the best overall 3-9×40 scope, you can’t go wrong with this UTG Hunter optic. For starters, it only weighs 1.3 pounds, so it’s not too heavy for most firearms. It offers fantastic features and durability, in addition to an overall design that’s very user-friendly. The scope is ideal for hunters and target shooters alike.

What makes the UTG Hunter Scope so special?

Where to start? This optic comes with emerald lens coatings that provide the objective lens with extra durability and better sight picture resolution. Finding your target will be faster and easier using this optic than otherwise.

But the scope overall is totally weatherproof, featuring nitrogen sealings to prevent water or fog from affecting its performance. It’s also quite durable if dropped, in part due to the aircraft-grade aluminum from which it is constructed.

The turrets are another great aspect of this scope. They’re zero-resettable and zero-locking, so adjusting for windage and elevation is fast and precise. Furthermore, the scope comes with an illuminated reticle system that offers up to 36 different colors: perfect for partially colorblind hunters or those who just want to make sure they never miss their targets.

In addition to a parallax adjuster near the magnification ring, this scope comes with both Weaver and Picatinny mounting rings. Adding it to your rifle will be a breeze. A flip-open lens cap rounds out this fantastic optical offering.

Pros:

  • Comes with an illuminated reticle that can swap between 36 colors
  • Lenses are high quality and durable
  • Scope overall is very durable and weatherproof
  • Windage and elevation turrets can be zero reset or locked depending on your needs
  • Parallax adjustable
  • Comes with several great accessories, like mounting rings and lens caps

Cons:

  • Lens covers are admittedly pretty cheap and will not last for long
  • Most users won’t need 36 different illuminated reticle colors

2. Bushnell Trophy Riflescope (3-9X40, Matte)Bushnell Trophy Riflescope (3-9X40, Matte)

Bushnell has been in the field of manufacturing high-performance sports optics for over 50 years now. So, it’s really not all that surprising when their company’s guiding motto has over time evolved into something like ‘to provide the highest quality, most reliable, and most affordable sports optics products on the market.’

Bushnell scopes are one of the more user-friendly models in the market. And the Trophy Riflescope is all about adding an element of fun and enjoyment to any game hunting expedition, making it just perfect for professional and casual hunters alike.

What makes the Bushnell Trophy Riflescope so amazing?

Ease of use is one of the highlighting factors of this Bushnell scope. The windage and elevation adjustment is quite convenient and can be effortlessly customized with the help of the ¼ MOA.

This scope will easily allow focus and magnification adjustments while on the go, and even while aiming down the sights.

It’s very amateur-friendly and comes with lens coated with multiple layers to offer as much light transmission as possible, while at the same time ensuring minimal reflection on the surface. Getting good focus and acquiring your target will not be an issue under any lighting conditions.

The twelve-inch one-piece tube is conveniently designed to support a saddle and just weighs fourteen ounces, so for long hunting trips and expeditions, this scope will not weigh you down.

For durability, apart from making the scope environment proof, Bushnell also provides the model with a cover, that protects it from rough use and helps it to hold zero.

However, we found the eye relief to be quite inadequate. It doesn’t provide exactly what is advertised, and we will not be recommending this scope for those who rely heavily on spectacles.

Pros:

  • One of the more user-friendly scopes on our list today.
  • The ¼ MOA allows easy customization of the elevation and windage while on the go.
  • A multi-coated lens with anti-glare for providing the best in light transmission.
  • A lightweight tube that comes with its very own saddle.

Cons:

  • The eye relief is pretty small and can be inconvenient for a lot of users.

3. Vortex Optics Crossfire II  3-9×40 Second Focal PlaneVortex Optics Crossfire II 3-9x40 SFP Riflescope V-Plex MOA

Buy on Amazon
Check Price on OpticsPlanet

When it comes to going on long hunting trips under extremely rough conditions, it’s important that the scope you’re carrying is not only lightweight but extremely durable as well. And not many scopes in the market are specifically designed for long hunting trips. With just a little bit of physical damage, either their reticle breaks or they are easily knocked out of zero.

But, take the Vortex Crossfire II, for example, the scope is virtually indestructible, and is, by all means, the most durable scope on our list today.

What about the Vortex Crossfire II impressed us?

As we have mentioned above, when it comes to durability and providing the best shooting performance in long hunting trips, not many scopes can beat the Crossfire II. And it’s all thanks to the sturdy one-piece design that the scope comes with.

It’s made explicitly out of aircraft-grade aluminum alloy which makes it both lightweight and has extremely high resistance towards the highest of magnum recoils. It can take .340 caliber cartridge shocks almost effortlessly, even when in constant use under rough conditions.

Moreover, if you generally tend to shoot at various ranges where holdover is a concern, then this scope is a must-have. Vortex provides this model with a DEAD-HOLD BDC reticle, which has a customized dot design.

This allows the scope to minimize any sort of windage or holdover corrections to achieve an accurate shot, irrespective of the elevation.

The Precision-Glide Erector System is another fantastic feature that the scope provides. As Vortex doesn’t compromise with the quality of their zoom lens, a lot of premium components go into making them. The build along with the Erector system allows the scope to provide smoother magnification under the harshest of conditions.

However, the scope can disappoint when it comes to parallax errors; there is indeed a fair amount of it, and is much more noticeable when shooting offhanded. Plus, slight distortions in the image can also be noted at 6x magnification and above.

Pros:

  • DEAD-HOLD BDC reticle minimizes any sort of windage and hold over corrections.
  • Aircraft-grade build makes the scope extremely durable.
  • Precision-Glide Erector system provides smooth magnification adjustments.
  • Perfect for rough and extensive hunting trips.

Cons:

  • Has noticeable parallax.
  • The image tends to distort after 6x magnification.

4. Simmons Truplex Riflescope (3-9X40, Matte)Simmons Truplex Riflescope (3-9X40, Matte)

Buy on Amazon
Check Price on OpticsPlanet

The Simmons Truplex Riflescope is the more budget-friendly option and will fit those perfectly who want a high-quality 3-9×40 scope but at a very affordable price.

But, even though cheaper than the others on the list, Simmons doesn’t compromise on the Truplex’s build in any way. These scopes are built with accuracy and precision in mind, and when it comes to the competitive hunting scene, this model has grown to be extremely popular.

Their design is extremely attractive as well, and comes with a variety of high-quality features.

Can the Simmons Truplex be your pick for the day?

The Simmons Truplex is all about providing the hunter with the best in precision and accuracy under any form of environmental conditions.

One of its best features in our opinion is the TrueZero elevation and the windage adjustment system. As these components use the ‘¼-MOA Suregrip audible-click system’ for the customizing, it makes sure that the adjusting of these factors is as effortless as possible.

Additionally, both the elevation and the windage system comes with a unique lock mechanism. This allows the scope to hold its zero even when shooting high recoil rifles in rough and strenuous situations.

The QTA eyepiece that is available with the model, will help you make easy adjustments to the focus mid-hunt and acquire the target as quickly as possible. This will not only boost your overall hunting performance, making it much more enjoyable but significantly improve shooting accuracy as well.

This 8-point rifle scope has a very light build and is extremely easy to mount; however, the Truplex fails to impress when it comes to adequate light transmission. We didn’t find the glass of the optic to be all that good, and we will not recommend that you use this scope for long hunts or under dusky conditions.

Pros:

  • Convenient TrueZero fingertip windage and elevation adjustment system.
  • Holds its zero under rough conditions.
  • The truplex reticle is ideal for targeting game at different ranges.
  • Light, durable design is shock, water, and fog-proof.

Cons:

  • Average light-gathering potential.

Final Thoughts

Before picking a 3-9×40 scope, it’s important to look out for the features that they come in, and how they will be able to fit your hunting style. While one in our list boasts extreme durability, another has a commanding hand over accuracy and precision. So, it’s crucial to first weigh out what is important to you in a scope and what isn’t.

Hope you found our guide to be helpful.

4. Pinty 3-9X40mm

Sale
Pinty 3-9X40 Red Green Rangefinder Illuminated Optical Rifle Scope
Pinty 3-9X40 Red Green Rangefinder Illuminated Optical Rifle Scope
  • Green and red illuminations, 5-level brightness available, magnifications from 3X up to 9X, ultimate clarity and superior eyepiece guaranteed.
  • Field of view: 14'-25' @ 100yards; windage & elevation click value: 1/4 MOA 1/4" @ 100yards, 2.7”-3.3” eye relief.
  • Rangefinder reticle provides fast, simple aiming points for various shot distances.
  • Two 1’’ complementary scope rings to be easily mounted onto any 20mm Picatinny or Weaver mount rails.

It’s a cheap, generic brand, but if you want the best of the cheap market, you must consider this scope especially if you’re mounting to a low recoil rifle like an AR-style platform.

Pros:

  • Price
  • Illuminated reticle
  • ¼ MOA
  • Rangefinding reticle
  • Weatherproof

Cons:

For a budget scope, there are always going to be defective models that make it to the shelves, so you must buy through a seller with guaranteed refund windows and/or warranties.  QC issues range from canted reticles to inability to sight-in.

First off, ditch the included rings and mount and opt for high-quality replacements.  It’s cheap enough that you can tack on the cost, but if you choose to integrate the included accessories, then use some Loctite to thread the screws in place.  If the screws come out or if the mount is insecure, it’s likely the scope optics will take a hit and move out of place.

With securely mounted scope, the Pinty offers 3-9x magnification through a 40 mm aperture.  It has two illumination colors: red and green which are adjustable via the knob on top of the eyepiece.  They’re ranging reticles, so there are hashmarks at the center and then ranging crosshairs below.  It’s unspecified as to what the reticle is calibrated to, but with some time and ammo at the range with an AR-15, you may find the crosshairs to be 50 yards apart.

Adjustments are in ¼ MOA, and they have the slot-style type turrets.  As a tip, this isn’t a long-ranging scope even though it has higher power.  It’s for close to mid-range use because you may find it will run out of adjustment rather quickly.

What can you use a budget scope for?  Target practice, hunting, and plinking.  For less than $50, it can provide many afternoons of shooting fun.

5. Monstrum Tactical 3-9X32mm

Monstrum 3-9x32 Rifle Scope with Rangefinder Reticle and Medium Profile Scope...
  • Tactical rifle scope providing crystal clear targeting at 3-9x magnification, with a 32mm objective diameter and an eye relief of 3.5-3.8 Inches
  • Glass rangefinder reticle for on-the-fly range estimation and long distance targeting
  • Dial controlled reticle illumination in both red and green with multiple brightness intensities

Are you shooting off 5.56 rounds at the range?  In the market for a new scope?  The Monstrum tactical scope is made for you.  A low price tag, rangefinding reticle, and illuminated crosshairs is a recipe made for an afternoon of fun.  Did we mention this scope is dirt cheap?  We have now.

Pros:

  • Price
  • Lightweight/compact
  • Illuminated reticle
  • Rangefinder reticle
  • Nitrogen-purged

Cons:

The Monstrum rifle scope is easy to use even with its luxury features that attracts a lot of attention.  At its core, it's a no-fuss scope with its versatile 3-9x magnification.  The 32 mm aperture is on the smaller side, but it helps to keep the scope mounted low.  It also is partly responsible for its lightweight and compact size at 12 oz and 10.5" in length.

For a budget rifle scope, it's impressive to see the internal chamber has been nitrogen-purged for added fog and water resistance.  But, that isn't what has you considering the tac scope is it?  You want to know about lighted reticle and rangefinder stuff, right?

Monstrum installs a rangefinding reticle to allow you to get estimate distances to targets of known size.  You'll have to be at max power of 9x to depend on using the reticle in this way.  Quick note: the reticle is also designed to be used with 55 grain 5.56 rounds.

To help you find your target and draw your eye to the center, the crosshairs can be illuminated.  You have the option of turning on the red or green light in conditions when you need it most.  If this feature isn't particularly important to you, forget it and make use of the black crosshairs that are just as visible as any other ordinary scope.

With or without using the reticle or illumination setting, the Monstrum can be a dependable scope for your close-mid range needs.

Various quality control issues include build quality, reticle, and illumination problems.  But, we should mention that Monstrum Tactical customer service is pretty responsive.  You also have a 30 day no questions asked guarantee and a 1 year warranty.  For under 100 bucks, you can't beat that.
