The Lincoln Electric Port-A-Torch Mini Cutting Kit is a high-quality portable torch kit by one of the top names in welding. The storage caddy has shoulder straps for hands-free carrying. It holds a 20 cubic-foot oxygen tank and an MC-sized 10 cubic-foot acetylene tank.
The acetylene tank is DOT-certified, ready to fill or exchange right out of the box. The oxygen tank hasn’t been certified. You can’t get the tank filled or exchange it for a full one. You can have it certified fairly cheaply or buy another tank, not so cheap.
The Lincoln Electric Port-A-Torch Mini Cutting Kit cuts steel up to an inch thick, as delivered. With a different tip and bigger cylinders, you can cut up to 4 inches of steel. It’s able to weld up to 1/16-inch thick metal, with ½-inch capability from bigger tanks and torch tips.
This torch outfit is rugged and precise, made from forged brass with built-in check valves. The cutting attachment is also brass, and the delivery tubes are stainless steel. The Lincoln Electric Port-A-Torch Mini Cutting Kit comes with a welding tip, cutting head, cutting and welding tips, goggles, and a striker.
Best Cutting Torch
If you actually read the entire article you will save money, have less irritation, be smarter and satisfied with your new torch!
So you’re interested in possibly purchasing a new metal cutting torch but you’re not sure what to buy. Afterall there is only about a 100 different brands all claiming they are “heavy duty” right? I was a welder for many years and I have a few suggestions and tips for you when you are shopping around to find the best cutting torch to suite your needs.
I am going to let you in on a secret right of that bat here since I am such a nice guy… Ready? Set? I am only going to say this once!
Your regulators are just as important as the cutting torch you buy!
Regulators
I can’t stress this enough! Having quality regulators will provide you with several different things that are oh so important to you being able to cut metal versus melting it into glob. Quality regulators allow for proper gas pressure. Not being able to finely regulate your oxygen and acetylene pressures will keep you from making quality hassle free cuts. Fluctuations is gas pressure will cause the flame type and temperature to change leaving you irritated.
I have never personally witnessed an accident or tragedy during my welding career thankfully but I think safety is worth a mention here. Common sense tells me that the $29.99 variety of regulators controlling flammable and combustible gases are not as safe as the better quality more expensive regulators.
What are your needs?
As you may or may not know a cutting torch is capable of welding and extreme heating in addition to cutting. You can simply change out tips in order to have these capabilities. Something you should consider before buying a torch is what you will want to do with it now and in the future.
I say this because it is almost always cheaper to purchase a kit or package rather than the individual components separately. Every try to buy a 3/4″ socket alone? Get my point?
Quality vs Cheap
For the sake of argument let’s say you are using quality regulators. The difference between the way a a quality torch and a cheap torch cuts is this.
The above images of torch cuts were captured in a specialized testing facility, conducted in a secure undisclosed area, by a third party cutting torch testing organization overseen by very important people in suits. Ok would you believe I used microsoft paint?
Here is some real information. During my career as a welder I have made a ton of torch cuts and only got better with time as you would expect. I was invited over to a friends house to help him fabricate some parts for a model A Ford he was restoring. Long story short I had to cut some parts and I was astonished at how bad I was cutting. Up until that point I had never used a low quality torch set up.
In my opinion a quality torch really does make a difference!
List of The Best Cutting Torches
Most of the cutting torches listed below do not include gas bottles, you can find oxygen and acetylene bottles at your local welding supply store. I suggest not buying your own bottles in most cases because they have to be inspected every so often and this is not only a pain but also expensive. The smaller bottles also run out quickly but are easily portable! You will have to decide what works best for you though.
1) Victor, Complete Cutting Torch Kit (Professional Grade/Heavy Duty)

Plasma Cutting versus Oxy-Fuel – Which is the Better Choice?
Both cutting methods have their own advantages and disadvantages. Which one you should choose will depend on a number of things such as the material you are working on, its thickness, the power source you have, the job location and size and the overall costs of the project.
Plasma Cutting
This is a kind of ionized gas that has good electricity conduction properties. Plasma cutters can cut up to 1-inch thick metal. It will need compressed air source and a good amount of electricity in order to work well.
Today, you can find a variety of plasma cutters with portability to offer. They can be great when it comes to having a cutting tool that you can use for your various projects.
If you are cutting non-ferrous kinds of metals, it might be better to use plasma technology as it is more capable of cutting these kinds of metals. So, if you frequently work with metals like cast iron, stainless steel and aluminum, you are better off with plasma.
Another advantage to this is that it allows you to become more precise with your results without sacrificing on speed. Because of its maneuverability, it is actually better to use this to get more precise results. You can also use a faster speed even when working on thinner metals and not worry that you will end up distorting the metal. You will also save more time with this technology. Since it does not require metal pre-heating, you can save so much time.
Oxy-Fuel Cutting
This is what you can rely on when you are cutting thicker kinds of metals. It is more capable of cutting through thick metals.
A regular one is capable of cutting steel of up to 12 inches of thickness, although there are more capable ones out there that can cut through up to 20 inches of metal. These are also smaller and more portable since they don’t require compressed air source with high power.
Many of these tools come with a lightweight, which makes them even more portable.
Torches that make use of oxy-fuel do more than just cut. They can weld, solder, braze, gouge and heat as well. It is an all-around kind of tool that can accomplish a variety of tasks. The downside to this is that you can only use it on ferrous metals or those that do not contain iron. However, if workers want to be at a safe distance when cutting through metals for a prolonged period of time, oxy-fuel torches are more ideal.
You should weigh down these pros and cons, so you can find the right cutting torch that is more ideal for your needs.
Here are the cutting tools you should consider getting:
Which One Should You Choose?

It can get your cutting needs done. If you are on a budget but you want something that can still last you for many uses, this is a good choice to get.
Great for People on a Budget: STKUSA Gas Welding and Cutting Torch Kit Victor Type – If you are looking for something cheap, this should be a good choice. It comes complete with everything someone new in welding and cutting will use. It doesn’t have the best quality but for its price, it is actually a good choice.
Good Customer Service: Thoroughbred GasPony 1 Portable Welding/Cutting Torch – If you want to make sure that the product you are buying does not end up going to waste if you encounter issues with it, this is a good option for you. It is made from heavy-duty materials, so you can definitely rely on it for a long time. Everything has a good quality and the ergonomics can also be relied on.
Tips in Finding the Best Cutting Torch
You should carefully check out your options and use the following buying tips:
1. Check the rating of the torch
The rating will tell you the thickness of the metals it can cut. It will tell you a lot of its capabilities. If it has a high rating, it can be more capable of cutting through thicker metals. Which one you should get will depend on the kinds of metals you are working with. If you frequently work with thicker metals, it might be better to get torches with a higher rating.
2. Know more about the components and the accessories that are included in the kit
Make sure it has everything you need. Some kits might not include the essentials such as the gas line and ignite. Others may include welding glasses and even regulators in the kit. Also find out what kinds of tips are included in the kit. You should check what is included and then compare prices, so you can truly save more money.
3. Determine how easy it is for you to change its tips
If you need to use tools, you might have a hard time doing it in between work. If it does need tools, find out what kind of tool it uses to replace the tips.
4. Check its durability
It should be made from materials that are resistant to corrosion. It should be durable enough to last for a lot of uses.
5. Check the ergonomics
Hand fatigue is very common. This is why you should check if it has a comfortable grip and if the position and angle of the torch and the regulators are good. Make sure you can control these as well as the gas valves even when you are using welding gloves.
There are also other things you need to consider such as if it includes a warranty and if there are other additional features such as rotating tips. Choose one from a brand that you know you can trust because they have been around for some time.
What’s Next?
You should already have an idea which of the products mentioned above has the benefits you are looking for. Re: Cheapest way for cutting torch
Cheapest long term or short term?
Your best deal would probably be used on CL etc. for torch, regs, and hose. You might luck out and find tanks there too. I've seen a few deals in my area from time to time.
Horror freight. They sell cheap Victor knock offs for about $130 + for the kit. The down side is that I know some that have gotten the cheap imports and you can't get parts that fit right. In theory they match Victor parts. In reality they are off just enough some times that the new parts don't fit. It's usually too late to do much at that point but replace the whole torch. It's cheap now but expensive in the long run.
Rent a torch / tanks. The local rental center may have a torch for rent. One near me does. You can probably do better with a small place than Scumbelt. ( I have a Scumbelt with in 5 blocks of the house, but almost never rent anything from them. I get better service and selection from one of several other local rental houses, even if I have to drive 10-15 miles to get there. ) Also you can sometimes rent the tanks short term rather than shell out the money now to buy. My LWS guy is pretty flexible. He'll "rent" tanks even though company policy doesn't allow for that on smaller tanks. Basically you buy the tanks and fills and he'll credit back the purchase price less the restocking fee thats required by the company and you pay for the gas fills, as long as you bring the tanks back with in a week. Not all places are that flexible however.
As suggested above maybe some one here is near you and willing to help out or rent you their torch. My buddy used to borrow mine all the time. The deal was he filled tanks the next time they ran out or brought them back full. I almost never had to pay for the gas.Last edited by DSW; 11-15-2009 at 11:49 PM.

Re: Cheapest way for cutting torch
If this isn't a one time thing, buy a torch rig. With small use, one of the portable suitcase models might just work for you. Cost......around 400. Small J bottle (is that right?), and a little maybe 20cf 02 bottle.
Torch purchase............new if you have the bucks. No problems that you have to fix. About 250 for the torch, regulators, and hose. Bottles can run around 4-600 if you buy, and less if you rent, but the rental rapidly outstrips the purchase price after a year or so.- Join Date

Re: Cheapest way for cutting torch
I cut with propane instead of acetylene. It's very inexpensive to buy a propane tank and tip to convert your torch to use propane. Much cheaper than getting an acetylene bottle.

Re: Cheapest way for cutting torch
I too use propane, I had an old torch setup I'd got at an auction for cheap. I'd bought a piece of property and the PO had left two large bottles of propane. Dad had an extra oxy bottle I had filled so I was cutting metal for under $100 bucks. Some people say I'm cheap?

Re: Cheapest way for cutting torch
Yes, same setup as oxy/acetylene, just using propane instead of acetylene, also uses a differant cutting tip.

Is a Plasma Cutter Better Than a Torch?
Both have different uses. Plasma cutters are more precise and use ionized gas to cut metal to a depth of about an inch. Plasma requires compressed air and a lot of electricity. Plasma cutters are suited to cutting non-ferrous metal like aluminum and stainless steel, materials that are becoming increasingly more common in construction and industrial applications.
Plasma also speeds up the process, making the operation more efficient, creating less slag and cutting with a finer kerf.
Cutting torches are the workhorse of the fabricator world. They can cut metal to a thickness of 12 inches. Some industrial cutters can take this depth to 20 inches. Plasma cutters can’t compete with that.
Also, torches are portable, compared to plasma cutters, so they work in almost any scenario. You would use a torch to cut ferrous and iron-based metals, so they have a completely different use than a plasma cutter. Look at large-scale building work that requires iron girders, and you’ll find someone operating a cutting torch.
How To Choose the Best Cutting Torch
Each cutting torch kit is different, so selecting the vital features is essential to get the best torch for your money. Here are some crucial considerations.

Gauges
You need clear and easy to read gauges to monitor the pressure of the gas.

Regulators
Every cutting torch needs a regulator to control the amount of gas being fed to the torch. There should also be an oxygen regulator if the kit is also a welder. You will differentiate between the two because they are a different color.
Look for color-coordinated gas hoses, so you don’t confuse the acetylene from the oxygen.

Cutting Torch
A brass torch is the best type to get. Look for an ergonomic handle to increase the comfort level when operating the torch and for better control when manipulating the tip.

Cutting Prowess
Decide on the type of cutting you want to do and then pick a torch that matches your expectations. If you’re going to cut thicker material, make sure the torch is up to the task.

Tips
The tips can be expensive to buy, so if you can get additional tips with the kit, then great. It could save you a few dollars. Size zero tips typically cut to a depth of 1.5 inches. Look for a torch with easy to change tips. Some require a specialized tool to swap them, and this will slow you down.

Quality Construction
A lot of cutting torches are made from brass and stainless steel. These materials prevent corrosion, and they are more likely to be durable and resistant to heat. In a nutshell, they last longer, saving you money and giving you extended service.
The Best Cutting Torch of 2021
Several torch cutting kits are available, so we have scoured the market to bring you our top 9.
Victor Technologies Medalist Torch Cutting System
Best Oxy-Acetylene Cutting Torch Kit
Victor dominates the sector with a wide range of torch kits to meet every application. This medium-duty set is suited to a metal thickness of 0.50 inches or 5 inches with an optional tip that can be purchased at extra cost. The tip included with the set is zero-rated.
The torch has an ergonomic handle to increase your comfort levels and prolong your usage. It also ensures that you control the torch better, which improves your accuracy. The handle has a flat side that sits easily between your thumb and finger to reduce slippage, something that older handles regularly did.
It even comes with a striker and a pair of protective welding goggles. Victor has priced this torch to appeal to the beginner and budget end of the market, although it isn’t the cheapest cutting torch available.

If you are repairing HVAC systems, this is a vital attribute. These torches specialize in industrial applications where copper is present, which is why it is ideal for HVAC. It features gauge guards, a cylinder wrench, and a 12 ft hose.
You can solder to a depth of 1.5 inches using a soft solder, and with silver, a thickness of 0.75 inches.

If you care about your work rate and want to get started the moment you reach your destination, this tote is the ideal tool for the task.

This cutter could so easily have won the budget award; it’s that competitively priced. It retails at far less than most on the list. So, what does it have? It has high-capacity oxygen and acetylene regulators with a 2.5-inch diameter of the best performance.
It has a brass torch and brass valve body for maximum durability and performance, and the entire kit is constructed from either stainless steel or brass for longevity. It has deluxe, single-stage regulators with reverse flow valves, and it has a cutting capacity of 0.50 inches.
This is the perfect beginner’s cutting torch because it comes with everything you need to get started.

Victor Technologies Medalist 350 Heavy-Duty Torch Cutting System
Best Heavy-Duty Cutting Torch Kit
Now we get to the heavy-duty torch cutters. This Victor has a cutting depth of 0.75 inches using the standard tips, but if you purchase the optional extra tips, that thickness extends to 6 inches.
This kit has a 25 ft hose, so reaching your workpiece is easier, and it enables you to get into tighter spots without fear that you cannot reach. It comes with G350 regulators and a torch handle with built-in check valves.
The torch is slightly longer than the medium-duty cutter, and it produces more heat.

ABN Oxygen and Acetylene Torch Kit
Best Budget Cutting Torch Kit
This kit is built from heavy-duty metal parts and comes complete with a hard-wearing carry case to keep all the bits safe. What makes this a stand-out torch cutter is the price. This cutter costs 5 times less than some featured on the list.
It comes with a torch with 3 welding attachments and 1 cutting attachment. It has a handle with valve knobs and a tip cleaner and igniter. What it lacks are gauges to show you the PSI and pressure of the oxygen and acetylene.
The lack of gauges makes this a tricky tool to learn with, which is why we awarded it the budget model rather than the best torch cutter for beginners.

BLUEFIRE Oxygen Propane Cutting Torch Kit
Best Propane Cutting Torch Kit
This propane torch creates a flame temperature of 2,900 degrees Celsius, which is powerful enough to melt most metals. Cast iron has a melting point of 1,593 degrees Celsius, while stainless steel melts at 1450 degrees Celsius.
This torch cuts, welds, brazes and solders, and it even comes complete with the gas bottle racks to keep everything contained. It has an ergonomic handle to make it more comfortable to grip and use for longer periods, and it is compatible with MAPP, propane or with a mixture of the two.
This was almost the budget option, but it lost out to the ABN model. Still, for the money, this is a great investment.

Cutting Torch FAQs

How Hot Is an Oxy-Acetylene Torch?
Oxygen and acetylene produce a flame temperature of 3,150 degrees Celsius when mixed together. It is the hottest of all the fuel gasses and the only one capable of melting steel.

What Setting Should I Set My Cutting Torch On?
It depends on the depths you are cutting. For 0.25 inches, you should use a zero-rated tip and set your oxygen at 30 PSI and the acetylene at 4 PSI. For 1 to 1.5 inches thick, set the acetylene to 10 PSI and the oxygen to 40 PSI.

Do You Turn on Oxygen or Acetylene First?
You should turn on the oxygen first and then the acetylene. Also, when shutting down, turn off the oxygen first. If you close the acetylene with the oxygen still open, you may get a “pop” that could throw soot and debris into the gas pipes, causing a blockage.

How Do You Cut Steel With a Torch?
You need to heat the metal first to avoid distortion, and then, depending on the thickness, you should set your oxygen to 40 PSI and your acetylene to 10 PSI. Hold the torch steady and linger on the steel until it starts to melt. Move the torch along the cut line, making sure the metal reaches the correct temperature.
When you reach the end, turn off the oxygen first and then the acetylene.

How Long Do Portable Cutting Torches Last?
You should get between 20 and 30 minutes cutting time between rests.

Why Is My Cutting Torch Popping?
It could be a problem with the flow of the gas. Check your regulator, and make any adjustments to see if the noise stops. It could also be that when you turn off the torch, you have accidentally shut the acetylene off first, instead of the oxygen.
Do Torch Kits Cut It?
Torch kits are more versatile compared to plasma cutters and they have many more uses. They are great to have around for on the spot jobs and cutting tasks, as well as having welding capabilities to carry out minor repairs.
If you need a tool that can tackle all these things, you need to invest in a cutting torch kit.

Also, how about something like this? I'm not going to be doing huge jobs, just the occasional automotive repair. Someone mentioned Victor brand, but I can't tell if this thing is junk that's straight outta china.

DO NOT buy that set. The tanks are NOT DOT approved, as per their description. Nobody will fill/exchange them for you.
I have a torch setup that size, and a full size rig. Those small bottles do not last. They are good for welding and thats about it. If you want to cut, you get about 5-10 minutes out of them, same with heating.
I bought this set
http://store.cyberweld.com/smwecuoutomb.html
from Cyberweld, as per suggestion by members here. Comes with good regulators, a torch handle, rosebud, cutting attachment, and welding tip. I was lucky enough to find a set of owner bottles off the local Craiglist with a cart for $100 (which is a steal, dont expect this).
Also a good idea to invest in some regulator mounts flashback arrestors.
If nobody has offered a clear explanation of owner bottles verses rentals.... Owner bottles YOU own, if you bring them to your welding supply store, you can choose to either have them filled (and keep you current bottle), or swapped out for another owner bottle that is already filled. Rentals are rented from a local welding supply and you pay the rental fee plus the cost of the gas. Rentals are identified by raised lettering (normally the supply store name) on the neck of the bottle. If you find a rental bottle used, DO NOT buy it, nobody will fill it because you do not own it (it technically belongs to the company whose name is on it).
Also, while looking at bottles keep an eye out for the 'hydrotest date'. It will be stamped the bottle in the form of the date (month/year) followed by a + and/or a (star). The plus labels the cylinder being allowed to be filled 10% above rated capacity, and the star states the hydrotest is good for 10 years past the stamped date. If there is no star, the test is good for 5 years.
A lot of tanks have multiple dates from consistent testing, go with the most current date.
Here is a good little cheat sheet;
