Here you’ll find everything there is to know about pre-paid AT&T plans, as well as phones that work well on the network. If you’re looking to save even more money, we have a few other MVNOs you might consider as well. Ready to try a new carrier? Let’s get to it.
AT&T at a glance
AT&T has been around for longer than just about any other carrier, though it’s had more than a few names. It began as Southwestern Bell in 1877 as a subsidiary of Alexander Graham Bell’s own Bell Telephone Company.
AT&T is not Better Business Bureau accredited despite its long history, but it does carry an A-plus rating. The customer reviews aren’t glowing, with a dismal one-star rating and an incredible 58,813 complaints addressed in the past three years. 20,752 of those complaints have come in the last 12 months alone.
As you would expect from a leading carrier with over 100 million subscribers, the AT&T 4G network extends through all 50 states. Its 4G coverage isn’t as extensive as Verizon’s, and its 5G lags behind T-Mobile’s, but AT&T has the most extensive 3G base of the three.
You can check out AT&T’s product map here to find out more about its coverage.
Pre-paid AT&T plans
AT&T offers four different prepaid plans and a few special offers for the middle-tier plan. 5GB of data per month costs as little as $30 each as long as you pay upfront. Check out all of the plans below before you make a decision.

Budget Conscious Plan
AT&T keeps things simple for its prepaid plans, starting with the 5GB Budget Conscious option. As you might have guessed, the plan offers 5GB of high-speed 4G LTE data per month. It’s the most affordable plan on the list at $30 per month per line, so there aren’t too many extra goodies included. You can use your data for hotspot and HD streaming up to the cap, but be ready for how quickly you can chew through 5GB.
A 5GB Budget Conscious plan is a solid option if you plan to spend some time in Canada or Mexico, as you can pay per use when it comes to calling. As with all plans, you can text from the US to over 100 other countries.
Highlights:
- 5GB of 4G LTE data
- $30 per line
- Rollover and hotspot included
Best for:
- Light data users who want to save some money

Big Deal Plan
If you don’t mind paying a bit more, AT&T’s 15GB Big Deal prepaid plan makes more sense for most subscribers. Not only do you get three times the data per billing cycle, but you’ll pay just $10 more per month for service.
Many of the 15GB perks match those of the 5GB plan — no 5G access, rollover is included, and you can use the entire cap for a hotspot. However, the 15GB plan drops the pay-per-use structure in Canada and Mexico, so you can call and text anywhere in North America.
Highlights:
- 15GB of 4G LTE data with rollover and hotspot
- International use in Canada and Mexico
Best for:
- Users who are considering sticking with AT&T prepaid for the long run

Unlimited Plan
Although this AT&T prepaid plan comes with unlimited data, a few exclusions seem out of place. For starters, you’ll have to chip in extra for hotspot access, and HD streaming isn’t an option. Keep in mind that you’re paying $65 per month for this tier of service. There’s still no 5G access, and rollover data is gone too — though that’s because you don’t have a data limit.
Highlights:
- Unlimited data
- Use in Canada and Mexico
Best for:
- Users who want unlimited data and select international usage without many extras
Get the Unlimited Plan
Unlimited Plus Plan
AT&T’s final prepaid option is the Unlimited Plus plan, which is about as close as you can get to the post-paid service. You can tap into the 5G network, and you get unlimited 4G LTE service that won’t slow down until you cross the 22GB threshold. The Unlimited Plus plan adds in 10GB of hotspot data, and although it’s limited, it’s more than the 2GB or 8GB plans offer.
HD video streaming makes a triumphant return, as does international usage, but you still won’t need rollover data because there’s no limit.
Highlights:
- 5G access included
- Unlimited data without limits up to 22GB
- HD streaming and 10GB of hotspot data
Best for:
- Users who want post-paid perks with pre-paid commitment

AT&T prepaid data-only plans
If you’ve just picked up an exciting new tablet or you’re looking to hook your laptop up with a hotspot, AT&T has you covered. It’s given its data-only plans a pretty serious boost, so you can enjoy 5G wherever you may roam. The previous 40GB for $75 plan now packs 100GB for $55 per month, and it’s tough to turn down more data. If you don’t need quite so much data, you can grab 15GB for $35 or grab a year of 20GB per month when you pay the entire $300 ($25 per month) up front.
Highlights:
- Up to 100GB of 5G hotspot
- Optional one-year plan
Best for:
- Users who need a heap of data to pull from

Which of AT&T’s prepaid plans is right for you?
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority
The right AT&T prepaid plan for you is simply the one that meets your needs the best. If you don’t need much data or you’re confident that rollover can keep you afloat each month, opt for a limited plan. The unlimited options provide more peace of mind, but you won’t get 5G access unless you opt for Unlimited Plus.
AT&T’s basic unlimited plan doesn’t offer hotspot or HD streaming, though the rest of the plans at least cover hotspot. There’s no unlimited 4G hotspot, though, so you’ll have to monitor your speed and usage carefully.
AT&T Prepaid vs the competition
The best way to decide if AT&T’s prepaid service is right for you is to compare it directly to its top competitors. We’ve stacked Big Blue’s prepaid against Verizon, T-Mobile, and even Cricket Wireless — a wholly-owned subsidiary. Our top plans come from our list of the Best prepaid and no-contract plans in the US if you want to do more research.

Verizon prepaid
As the largest US-based carrier, Verizon can give AT&T a run for its money. Its prepaid unlimited plan starts at $65 per month and gets cheaper the longer you stay with Big Red. As usual, unlimited talk, text, and data are included. However, you’ll pay more for hotspot access if you need it.
Verizon’s prepaid plans offer solid international access — talk and text to Canada and Mexico and texting to hundreds of countries. You can also tap into Verizon’s Nationwide 5G network with most plans and spend an extra $10 per month for mmWave access.

- Ample international access
- Loyalty discounts

T-Mobile Prepaid
T-Mobile’s prepaid service is another affordable alternative, and it’s another option with 5G access included. You’ll only be able to stream at 480p, and international service costs an extra $5 to $15 per month. It’s a great option if you plan on sticking to domestic data, and each line gets 10GB of a hotspot and unlimited 4G LTE.
One of the biggest selling points for T-Mobile’s prepaid service is the savings. The first line costs $60, but each additional line of service costs just $30 more.

Many of the best Cricket features are available as add-ons, so it’s easy to run your bill up by a few bucks. However, that’s the secret to unlocking Cricket’s full potential. Options include more hotspot data, better international access, and extra data on select plans.

Straight Talk
Straight Talk is a popular MVNO, and signing up is as easy as going to Walmart. You can also sign up online and choose from various plans, both with limited and unlimited data. Like many MVNOs, you can pay monthly and reload your account as you need more data. Best of all, basic plans start at just $30 per month.

Red Pocket
Red Pocket is unique among MVNOs in that it works on all of the major carriers. However, you’ll choose your carrier at signup, and then you’re locked in for the duration of your service. Once again, there are limited and unlimited options, and it’s easy to bring a phone along, thanks to the network choices.

Tracfone
Tracfone is one of the oldest and best-known MVNOs on the market, and its staying power speaks volumes. You can choose from some plans with limited or unlimited talk, text, and data. Add-ons are another great way to flesh out your service for an added cost.

What phones can you use?
David Imel / Android Authority
As far as prepaid phones go, AT&T is limited compared to Verizon and T-Mobile. The carrier offers just one dozen devices, with the highlight among them being the Motorola One 5G Ace. The options are very affordable, with the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G topping the scales at $279.99. Many others, like the LG Phoenix 4 and Samsung Galaxy A02s, cost less than $75 if you sign up for any AT&T prepaid plan.

The best AT&T prepaid plans for October 2021
If you're interested in cutting those bills right down, our guide to this month's AT&T prepaid plans is sure to be handy. AT&T, like most of the other big carriers tends to focus on its big 'postpaid' unlimited plans, although that hasn't stopped it from offering up some pretty great prepaid options all around. Unlike those from the other carriers, there's quite a variation on offer too which shows AT&T is more willing to offer decent prepaid alternatives than most. In general, AT&T prepaid plans are cheaper, simpler, and also don't need a lengthy contract. We're deep-diving into the current lineup just down below.
If you're visiting this page, you probably already have a general idea about AT&T's current prepaid plans, however, what you might not know is there are actually a few different plan types to take advantage of. Both the traditional pay-monthly plans and multi-month bundles are actually available via AT&T, and we'll be comparing both of these services directly with a full price breakdown just below.
And, If you're you're simply researching affordable plans in general, we've also included our views on how AT&T's prepaid plans shape up against the best AT&T plans in general as well as the best prepaid plans from other carriers. At the bottom of the page, you'll find details in particular about other compelling options like Verizon prepaid plans, Visible, and Mint Mobile to name a few.
Before we get into the current AT&T prepaid plan offerings and pricing, we'll just quickly summarize what AT&T as a service brings to the table. Here we've included the main pros and cons of going prepaid, as well as things a couple of things we think you should know before you dive right in.
AT&T prepaid plans at a glance
Why go AT&T Prepaid?
Affordable single lines
AT&T prepaid plans offer a simple, cheap way to get your hands on a set amount of data each month without the need for a lengthy contract. Compared to the standard post-paid unlimited data plans at AT&T, these prepaid plans are generally really affordable for single-line users especially.
More upfront, bigger savings
Unlike those offered by most bigger carriers, AT&T prepaid plans give you the option to pay monthly or for a whole year in one upfront payment. The latter might sound like a bad option, but it comes with an overall lower monthly price on average that can save you a ton of cash in the long run.
No credit check
Compared to AT&T's postpaid plans, there's no associated credit check for when you sign up with an AT&T prepaid plan. So, if credit is a concern for you, or you're simply working on building up your score in the meanwhile, these plans are readily available to you.
Why avoid AT&T Prepaid?
Limited features
AT&T prepaid plans, while cheap, are essentially the 'basic' option from the carrier. Subsequently, they do away with some of the juicy perks that most customers enjoy on the post-paid unlimited plans. These include things like high-definition video quality, prioritized data speeds, a bigger mobile hotspot allowance, and even free subscriptions to streaming services like HBO Max.
No enticing phone deals
While cheaper in regards to plan expenses, AT&T prepaid plans don't tend to offer access to the juiciest AT&T phone deals at any one time. The carrier really likes to reserve these for its prepaid customers, so if you've got your heart set on bagging one of the best AT&T phones, you'll likely not get a discount unless you sign up for a more expensive plan. If you happen to have a device to trade-in in particular this can be a strong option, as rebates on postpaid plans can be upwards of $700.
Extra expenses
While some service providers have opted for a simpler and more transparent pricing system, AT&T still offers plans that have taxes and fees piled on top of the price you see at first. So, expect to pay a bit more each month than whatever the 'price tag' indicates.
Current AT&T prepaid plans
AT&T prepaid pay monthly plans
AT&T's main prepaid plan offerings generally follow the usual sort of thing you see offered by smaller carriers - a monthly fee for one month of service with no lengthy contractual obligations. These plans generally offer the most data for AT&T prepaid plans and are also the 'main' plans the carrier advertises for its prepaid service, note, however, you may get better bang for the buck with the multi-month plans (see below).
AT&T Prepaid: 5GB plan for $30/month
For the simplest plan, you can pay one of the lowest prices. This plan will let you do all the calling and texting you want, and it provides 5GB of data that's more than enough for all your email, light browsing, and the occasional YouTube video. Just note, this is the one prepaid plan that doesn't include use in Mexico and Canada.
Yearly cost: $360 | Monthly cost: $30 (1 mo)View Deal
AT&T Prepaid: 15GB plan for $40/month
For an extra $10/month you can triple your data allotment from the 5GB plan. 15GB may not be enough for the hungriest data users, but it's plenty for general use. AT&T estimates 15GB is enough for over 1,000 emails, 400 hours of streamed music, 40 hours of web browsing, and 15 hours of SD video streaming combined.
Yearly cost: $480 | Monthly cost: $40 (1 mo)View Deal
AT&T Prepaid: Unlimited plan for $65/month ($50 with auto-pay)
If you use your phone constantly for browsing, streaming music, and a lot of video, then you may be best off with an unlimited plan. With auto-pay, it's only a little more expensive than the 15GB plan. However, you may see reduced speeds when the network is busy, and you'll have to pay separately for hotspot data.
Yearly cost: $780 | Monthly cost: $65 (1 mo)View Deal
AT&T Prepaid: Unlimited Plus plan for $75/month ($60 with auto-pay)
This plan is for the heaviest users. This is a good option if you want a lot of data and want it fast. It's the only prepaid plan that allows you to access AT&T's 5G network, and it also allows you to stream HD video and provides 10GB of data for mobile hotspot. However, you may still get slowed down when the network is busy if you've used more than 22GB in a month.
Yearly cost: $900 | Monthly cost: $75 (1 mo)View Deal
AT&T prepaid multi-month plans
Somewhat tucked away on the AT&T Prepaid site is the secondary set of plans the service offers - a multi-month bundling option that allows you to pay upfront for a set amount of months at a time. Simply put, you can expect to pay a fairly significant sum with these, however, they do average out to a much lower monthly price overall than the usual pay-monthly options. Below you can see the current offerings.
AT&T Prepaid: 1 year 8GB plan for $300 upfront
If you can pay for a full year upfront, the 8GB prepaid plan is one of the highest value options AT&T offers. 8GB each month is enough for a lot of browsing and a little bit of streaming music and videos. And AT&T allows you to rollover unused data from one month to the next. Be careful on this plan though, as it allows HD video streaming, which could devour your entire data allotment in just a few hours.
Yearly cost: $300 | Monthly cost: $25 (1 mo)View Deal
What AT&T prepaid plans include
While AT&T's plans come with data allotments most prominently displayed, they offer a good deal more than that. Here's what you can expect to get from prepaid plans with data allotments:
- Unlimited talk and text
- Roaming in Mexico and Canada (except 5GB plan)
- Mobile hotspot support
- 4G LTE connectivity
- Rollover data
- Unlimited texting to Mexico, Canada, and over 100 other countries
And, here's what the prepaid unlimited plans have to offer:
- Autopay discounts
- Unlimited talk, text and data
- Roaming in Mexico and Canada
- Slowed speeds during network congestion (after 22GB for Unlimited Plus)
- Unlimited texting to Mexico, Canada, and over 100 other countries
AT&T Prepaid plans: FAQ
Should I go monthly or multi-month?
There are two important factors in considering whether to go with a monthly or multi-month plan: how much data you need and what you can afford.
If you need a lot of data, then your only option is to go with a monthly plan, as the multi-month plans only offer 8GB of data.
If your data needs are minimal, then you have some options. By paying for a 12-month plan, you'll be able to get 8GB of data a month and more features with your plan than the 5GB plan, plus you'll have saved $60 over the course of the year. If you opt for the 3-month plan, you won't save quite as much, but you can worry less about running out of data. You'll be paying $3 more per month than the 5GB plan but getting an extra 3GB of data, which is a deal since AT&T would charge $10/GB for extra data on the 5GB plan.
How do AT&T's prepaid plans shape up against the competition?
AT&T certainly has the name recognition, but that doesn't mean its the best player in the market for prepaid and affordable mobile plans.
Mint Mobile plans are a very, very competitive alternative to the likes of AT&T prepaid. While running on the T-Mobile network specifically, Mint Mobile operates a similar 'buy-in-bulk' pricing scheme to the best value AT&T prepaid plans. For example, for $240 (averaging to $20 a month) you can get yourself 12-months of Mint Mobile's 10GB data plan. That's quite a bit cheaper than the equivalent 8GB AT&T prepaid plan at $30 a month, and there are also options for a cheap unlimited data plan at Mint too at $30 a month. Of course, Mint's plans average out to a very cheap rate per month, but you'll need to be buying them upfront. The Mint unlimited plan also caps out at 128Kpbs data speeds after 35GB of use, which is the same as AT&T users who have used their allowance.
If you don't want to pay upfront for a multi-month plan but do plan on sticking with one carrier for a while, you may like Verizon's prepaid options. Verizon prepaid plans offer a reduced rate, a special loyalty discount, after your first three months and again after nine months. However, they are otherwise more expensive than AT&T's comparable offers.
For high data needs, Metro by T-Mobile offers a better value than AT&T. You can get an unlimited data plan with 5G connectivity and 5GB of hotspot data for just $50 a month, and you don't have to pay upfront for multiple months. That $50 is also inclusive of taxes and fees, so you know exactly what you'll be paying. To top it off, T-Mobile won't deprioritize your data speeds until after you've used 35GB of data, which beats both of AT&T's prepaid unlimited plans.
Visible is another serious contender for mobile users on a budget. Even if you're just trying to get a single line, you'll be paying $40 at most. That's for an unlimited data plan on Verizon's 4G and 5G network. That unlimited data even extends to mobile hotspot, though it's capped to 5Mbps speeds. Better still, your price can drop as low as $25/month with Visible's Party Pay system which lets you create a 'family plan' with friends, family, or total strangers, and everyone pays their own bills.
