Emilia(エミリア) is the main heroine of the Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsuseries. She is a Half Elf and a candidate to become the 42nd King of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnicain the Royal Selection. Officially debuting at the very start of the series, Emilia is arguably the most important character in the series as most events somehow revolve around her.

Appearance

Emilia is a beautiful Half-Elf with long silver hair and purple-blue eyes. She wears a white and purple outfit along with a white flower in her hair. Although she appears to be in her late teens, Emilia's chronological age remains unknown, though mentally she has been stated to be in her early to mid teens. Throughout the series, she has styled her hair in a variety of ways, as per her contract with Puck, the Great Spirit of Fire was the one who arranged her hairstyle.

When Emilia still lived in Elior Forest as a child, she had a different set of clothes, with the same colour pattern. She had a light green ribbon instead of her necklace, a different flower in her hair, and could be seen wearing a light-purple headband.

Personality

Emilia is a very good-natured and energetic girl who likes to take care of others, though she herself sometimes refuses to admit this, instead thinking of it as her own selfishness or something everyone would do in her position, despite that often-case not being true. This often had Emilia closing up from others and not trusting people with her emotions or how she felt about different things and situations she was subjected to, as she was always of the mindset to eat it up and appear strong. This resulted in her being extremely fragile on the inside, and even being overly childish about certain things and subjects. This led her to always relying on others, that most usually being Puck, and later even Subaru. Though this somewhat worked out in the first three Arcs, Emilia quickly hid a dead end in Arc 4, where she was forced to stand up for herself and stop relying on others, if she wanted to overcome the Sanctuary predicament. A mixture of the unbearable first trial and the sudden tearing of hers and Puck's contract, resulted in Emilia hitting the lowest low she has ever been in. Luckily, with a great deal of Subaru's and even Puck's help, she was able to stand up, challenge her painful past and overcome the three trials presented by the Witch of Greed.

Upon overcoming the trials and liberating the Sanctuary, Emilia developed a great deal of self-confidence and greatly improved her self image, even due to the fact her contract with Puck was severed and she lost her father-figure, forcing her to break out of her shell and live on her own. This change can be super evident in the starting chapters of Arc 5, where some characters even point it out, and, according to Heinkel Astrea, the rumours surrounding her don't seem to be true anymore–namely, her timidness and indecisiveness she was known for around the Kingdom, was nowhere to be seen.

Emilia has a tendency to use a lot of archaic words, such as "dunderhead" or the likes. This quirk of hers is mostly pointed out by Subaru, who now and then teases her about it, though Emilia doesn't pay much attention to it anymore. Furthermore, Emilia also has a strong tendency to drag our words when she really means it (best example of this would be the numerous times she dragged out the word "really" into "reaaaaaally", usually when talking about her feelings for or towards something or someone), which can be best observed when she's talking about something dear or important to her. This quirk was likely picked up from Fortuna. Her view on the world and human relations is also rather childish and easy-going, though following her major character shift following the end of Arc 4, she learned how to balance that shortcoming out with a level of professionalism and a unique air of authority.

Just like the other four Royal Selection Candidates, Emilia is also driven by a strong motive which shapes most of her actions, be it rational or irrational. Following her 7 year long life in Elior Forest with Puck, after her awakening, she desperately tried to do something about the frozen elves in the forest. For 7 years she cleaned them daily, talked to them and spent a great deal of time and effort with them, trying to somehow get rid of their icy fate, however, to absolutely no avail. A couple of months before the start of the main story, however, she was visited by an eccentric mage, who introduced himself as Roswaal L Mathers. Though they initially started off on a wrong foot, as Roswaal and Puck fought for half a day, the two decided to form a truce and Roswaal presented Emilia with a plan that would allow her to unfreeze her people in the frozen Forest–by becoming the 42nd King of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica, Emilia would gain access to the Dragon's Blood locked up in the vaults of the Royal Castle. The Blood is said to have magical properties, and will surely unfreeze the frozen inhabitants of the Great Elior Forest. Emilia hastily accepted the offer and decided to participate in the Royal Selections, with her goal being a Kingdom of equality and zero prejudices.

History

About a century ago, Emilia lived with her aunt on her father's side, Fortuna in Elior Forest[1]. Back then, for reasons not known to her, she was considered a rather special child and was subsequently forced to spend most of her days isolated from the other elven villagers in a place called the "Princess Room" with only Fortuna, and her dolls as company. Eventually, her frustrations reached a boiling point and in an act of defiance, she broke her promise to not leave her room, and ventured into the forest searching for everyone. Free to do what she wanted and not hold obligations that were never explained to her, Emilia snuck out on several occasions while hiding the fact, doing everything from exploring to behaving mischievously. It was in this room she discovered she had an affinity for spirits, and summoned countless Lesser Spirits to play with her, not realizing how rare the ability was, referring to them as fairies.

One day, she snuck into the centre of the village and witnessed strange men giving supplies such as food and clothes to the elves. Emilia then witnessed a tall, green-haired man idly chatting with Fortuna, with her calling him Geuse. Emilia started to view him as a rival for Fortuna's affection, as Fortuna made a "special face" at him and smiled, expressions which she only showed to Emilia, as well as having everyone in the village meet them, leaving her in the princess room. She overheard Geuse asking about her safety, and then asking her about a mysterious seal which was supposedly kept safe somewhere in the forest. After sneaking back into the princess room and being visited by Fortuna, she set out to find this seal, and trekked through the forest, led by the Lesser Spirits who showed her the way. She finally came to a clearing deep within the forest. Before her, stood a pair of huge metal doors that stood by themselves. Deducing that this was the "seal" everyone was talking about, Emilia–now satisfied–decided to head back to her room. By chance, she ran into Geuse, who was strolling around in the forest. When Geuse saw her, he wept tears of joy, leading to Emilia forgiving him. It's unknown how many times following their first interaction, Emilia and Geuse spent time together, however, some time later, the duo–together with Fortuna, who supposedly quickly caught wind of Geuse's and Emilia's meeting–, went on a walk around the forest. There, Emilia revealed her fairy-friends, leaving both Fortuna and Geuse in utter shock. When the two argued about how she could develop her potential abilities as a Spirit Art User, Emilia commented how they were like her parents, which left Fortuna greatly embarrassed. When Fortuna asked her to return to the Princess Room, Emilia made her promise to let her see Geuse again.

Just as she was about to leave, however, disaster struck and Emilia's life was changed forever. A white haired figure stopped in front of them, an introduced themselves as the Sin Archbishop of Greed Regulus Corneas. Geuse demanded to know why he came, stating that Regulus had broken their agreement, and that they could have discussed this back at their Church[2][3], but to no avail, as every complaint was swiftly countered by the white haired Sin Archbishop. As Fortuna held Emilia, another figure revealed themselves–Pandora, the Witch of Vainglory–stating she has come to open the mysterious seal of Elior Forest. When Fortuna saw Pandora, she flew into a fit of rage, stating that she would avenge her brother and sent a huge hurdle of Ice Spikes flying her way. Upon seeing her initial attack has no effect on her, Fortuna proceeded to summon a huge mass of ice and dropped it onto the pair's heads, crushing them to death. However, as the ice shattered into pieces, Regulus stepped forth, not a scratch on him or on Pandora. Geuse then ordered Fortuna to escape with Emilia, saying that their lives were more important than vengeance. As Fortuna ran with Emilia, she witnessed Geuse remove a strange box from his robes, containing an unknown essence. Emilia then screamed, as Geuse slammed the box up to his chest and absorbed the contents, gaining the Authority of Sloth.

As Fortuna ran deep into the forest, she stated that she would go back to save Geuse. Emilia begged Fortuna not to leave her, but Fortuna said she would be safe. Arch suddenly arrived, and informed her that Geuse's men and the elves were repelling the attack from the assailants. Fortuna then apologized to him for bringing Emilia and herself to the village and burdening them, a notion Arch immediately denied, saying they had helped them. Fortuna then declared she would defend the forest and protect the seal, entrusting Emilia to Arch, promising to her that they would always be together, and then heading back toward Geuse. As Arch ran through the forest, they encountered a black robed man, and prepared to attack him, before he stated that he was one of Petelgeuse's fingers. The member then revealed that the Radical Faction, their Leader, the Witch of Vainglory and the Demon Beast Kurohebi, had arrived to the village. When Arch expressed disbelief, stating it was neigh uncontrollable, the Cultist confirmed Arch's statement, and adding that Pandora possessed the power to vaguely guide it to a general location. The forest then erupted around them, with Arch cursing himself, realizing they had stumbled onto its hunting grounds. The Cultist was suddenly licked by something ominous–he immediately recognised it as the Kurohebi. As Arch attempted to save him, the Cultist told Arch to run, saying that it was too late for him, as the Kurohebi's poison consumed him, withering his body away, until he died before Arch's eyes. Arch turned around and darted deeper into the woods, however, not long after, something entangled his legs and the two fell–Kurohebi had made physical contact with Arch. Realising what has happened, Arch hugged Emilia close to his chest and immediately severed his leg above the knee with Wind Magic and cauterised it with Fire Magic, however, he was too late. The poison had already started to consume his body. Arch, knowing his fate was sealed, ordered Emilia to run towards a nearby patch of flowers, which she did without a second guess. As Emilia ran far beyond the flowers she was sent to, the Lesser Spirits revealed themselves again, and flew away, almost as if wanting Emilia to follow them–which she naively did.

The spirits led her back to the Seal in the depths of Elior Forest. There, Pandora stood, arms wide spread. She then revealed she had been controlling the spirits the entire time, helping her locate the Seal. Pandora then asked her to open the seal, to which Emilia responded she couldn't. The Witch naturally didn't react nicely to that, stating she would rip the forest from the ground-up if she didn't, and also stated Fortuna and Geuse are okay, and that she would leave the forest if Emilia listened to her and gave her what she was asking for. Emilia then discovered she indeed possessed the key to the door,[4] but then remembered Fortuna had made her promise never to open the Seal. Before Pandora could react, Fortuna arrived and assaulted Pandora, saying she would not let her harm Emilia. Pandora merely smiled and kept reverting her own death, every time Fortuna had killer her. Shortly after Fortuna, Geuse had made contact with the group as well. The two confirmed Emilia's safety and Pandora's presence, and vowed to end it together. As Fortuna rushed forward and engaged in further one-sided slaughter with Pandora, the Witch used her Authority of Vainglory one last time, to trick Geuse's eyes, resulting in him tearing a hole in Fortuna's chest, inflicting mortal and irreparable wounds to Emilia's aunt. Geuse, realizing what he had done, snapped. With his reason for fighting lying in a pool of blood, he succumbed to the effects of the Witch Factor of Sloth, as his mind shattered beyond repair. Mere moments before Fortuna passed away, she told Emilia one last time that she loved her very much. Emilia, enraged, unleashed her full magic and attacked Pandora continuously, killing her over and over again as she used her Authority of Vainglory to rewrite her death. Emilia then lost control, and froze Elior Forest entirely, ending the bloodbath at Elior Forest. The last thing she could see before falling asleep, were Pandora and Geuse–now Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti, the newly-born Sin Archbishop of Sloth, leaving the forest together.

Roughly seven years before the start of the Royal Selection, the ice around Emilia melted and Emilia met Puck. The two began to live in the now snow-covered Elior Forest. Exposed to the outside world for some time now, Emilia came to face the hostile reality of what it meant to be a half-elf in the world, especially one with her appearance which was nearly identical to that of the infamous Witch of Envy. Following those days, she suffered many hardships, not just from neighbourhood human towns that feared her, hated her, betrayed her, and attempted to sell her into slavery, but even from higher beings such as one of the Four Great Spirits–Melakuera–governed over Fire who sought to exterminate her for the crime of her existence and dangerous power that slept within her. Because of these issues, Emilia minimized any contact with outsiders, sticking to a frugal life by only leaving the forest to trade the magic stones she could find with people willing to deal with her in nearby towns for food and clothing. Humans, who called her the Witch of Frost, mostly tried to avoid her when she came around, but other than these excursions, Emilia would otherwise stay with the frozen elves as a guardian, as they were connected to her past. After the harrowing incident with Melakuera, Emilia formed a contract with Puck to preserve his life after his Od had been damaged. Puck then began to act as her surrogate father and mentor. He used the contract itself to seal parts of her memories that had been tampered with by Pandora[5].

A year before Subaru arrived, she and Puck were visited by an eccentric man who named himself Roswaal L Mathers, the first human who didn't react negatively to her appearance. He then invited her to the Royal Selection after being chosen by the Dragon Jewel by giving her a way to save the citizens of Elior Forest, through the usage of the Dragon's Blood[6].

Abilities

Spirit Affinity: Emilia has a rare innate gift to form contracts with spirits.

Spirit User (精霊使い Seirei Tsukai):

Emilia is currently contracted with several Quasi Spirits and was formerly contracted with the Great Spirit of Fire, Puck. During the incident at the Sanctuary, Puck severed his contract with her, causing her existing pendant to shatter, and she temporarily carried him around in a crystal stone that wasn't pure enough for her to use him properly. She later replaces her pendant with a new high purity crystal stone following the events at Priestella. However, she states that she still doesn't have enough mana to form a new contract. Puck himself wasn't a Spirit before he was made into an Artificial Spirit by Echidna and has some sort of contract with her that seals his former memories unless a certain yet-unknown condition is met. It should be mentioned, however, that in Chapter 72 of the web novel version of Arc 4, during Subaru's second trial, Puck and Emilia faced off against Petelgeuse who had just slaughtered the entire subjugation force. For an unexplained reason, Puck regained his memories and forcefully severed his contract with Emilia, in order to prevent the Ordeal from carrying out. This even–alongside the featured failed loop–has been completely removed from the Light Novel. Some of Emilia's contract conditions are:

  • He will be active only from 9 am to 5 pm
  • Do not ask about his relationship with Beatrice
  • Do not look into a mirror or go near a large body of water
  • Do not hide the fact that you are a half-elf
  • He will choose your hairstyle every morning[7]
  • Groom his fur regularly
  • Do some exercises when you wake up and before going to bed.
  • Do not be picky about food
  • Talk with lesser spirits every morning and evening

Spirit Arts (精霊術): Emilia is capable of using her Spirit Arts with Puck and her other spirits. Emilia and Puck can smoothly alternate between roles of offense and defense leading to devastating results. These include examples like changing the atmosphere in the sky to rain down multitudes of ice spears, forming ice clones that are capable of attacking, instantly conjuring giant freezing blade discs, mist barriers that hide her presence, and ice shields. On top of that, Emilia is contracted to several Quasi Spirits; she can use them for various applications such as healing.

Magic User (魔法使い Maho Tsukai): Following the trials, Emilia remembered that she could use magic without Puck, and becomes able to use it again. It also made her aware of the abnormal amount of mana flowing through her. She is able to use ice magic through her natural fire attribute like her aunt Fortuna, by rapidly converting heat into ice. According to Emilia, if she gathers a lot of energy, she can cause an explosion. In terms of magical power, Emilia is stated to be roughly as strong as the original Roswaal A Mathers.

  • Huma (ヒューマ): Emilia creates a shining water barrier that blocks other projectiles and sorts of magic. However, if the incoming magic is stronger than the shield, it will get through it and cause damage to the user.
    • El Huma (エル・ヒューマ):
Emilia forms and shoots multitudes of ice spears from her hands which easily pierces through and crushes flesh that vanish a moment afterwards.
    • UI Huma (ウル・ヒューマ): Emilia summons massive ice pillars from the ground that crash into her target.
  • Ice Brand Arts (アイスブランドアーツ): This technique allows Emilia to instantly conjure ice made weapons which she can use and freely manipulate in close-quarters combat. The weapons are very sturdy and are even capable of withstanding heat. Its requires a lot of mana to use so even when it was copied by the Gluttony, they could not use to its full extent.
    • Ice Brand Arts: Icicle Line (アイスブランドアーツ、アイシクルライン): Emilia creates a limited area barrier made of ice particles around her opponent, which she uses to attack in all directions by transforming them into weapons. Subaru helped to create the idea for this move.
    • Ice Brand Arts: Ice Soldiers (アイスブランド・アーツ: 氷の兵隊): Emilia can create soldiers who are completely made out of ice. These soldiers are exactly the same as actual humans and are clad in armor made of ice while wielding weapons made of ice. They follow every order given to them by Emilia. The soldiers' strength depends from the mana density; the more mana Emilia uses the stronger the soldiers will be. The technique was developed by her and Subaru some time after the events of the 4th arc hence, the soldiers take Subaru's appearance. Currently, Emilia is able to create up to seven proper Ice Soldiers and no less than ten soldiers with only their torsos, heads and arms. When destroyed, these soldiers can regenerate back to their full health as long as Emilia has the strength to do so.
  • Ice Flower (氷の花): Emilia creates flowers made of ice on wounds of living beings within a certain area that suck the host's life force and bloom by sucking the host's blood. Seven years ago, Emilia couldn't control the affected area and stop it properly. Puck had to use his powers to terminate it.
  • Cocytus: Cocytus is a large scale spell made out of two combined elements, which was used by Subaru and Emilia during their fight against the Oousagi. While Subaru used Yin Magic to form some sort of a barricade around the Demon Beasts to prevent them from escaping, Emilia used Fire Magic to carefully apply magical energy to the already-casted Minya spell, creating an icy cage and lifting the cage, the Demon Beasts and the ground itself high in the air.
  • Absolute Zero (絶対零度): Absolute Zero is Emilia's absolute trump card, and her strongest attack in her arsenal. According to one web novel passage, if her normal magic was a 1, Absolute Zero would hover around a 10, if not even around 100[8]. It's devastating enough to be able to end pretty much any real battle in a single blow[9]. Absolute Zero allows Emilia to freeze the atmosphere around her to such such a degree, that a vacuum is created, inside which, even time can be stopped[10]. Any and all beings that find themselves in this vacuum have zero chances of survival. With this ability, she was able to utterly nullify the Divine Dragon's purifying breath, which has been described to be hot enough and strong enough to melt through anything and disintegrate everything it comes into contact with–Emilia's Ice Soldiers were sturdier than even metal, yet, they were instantly scorched from existence by Volcanica's purifying breath. This ability was named by Natsuki Subaru, some time following the events of Arc 4[11].

Melee Fighter:

While she leans more on the magical side, Emilia is also apt at close-quarters combat. Like Garfiel, rather than having a known practiced form, she is a more instinctual fighter, relying on her body's natural talents such as its high nimbleness, sharp senses, and above-average physical strength combined with her magical arts. This creates her own unique style. With her melee combat abilities, Emilia was capable of defeating a group of bandits all on her own.

Equipment:

  • Puck breaks Emilia's original Pyroxene Crystal.

  • Emilia's new Pyroxene Crystal.

  • Pyroxene Crystal (輝石結晶): Emilia wielded a magical crystal of this type until it broke after Puck forcefully severed the contract in order to remove the lid off of Emilia's memories, allowing her to challenge the Trials from the Tomb of the Witch of Greed. After the end of Arc 4, she received another Pyroxene Crystal from Subaru, which he got from Frederica Baumann. The Pyroxene Crystal harboured Puck for roughly a year, until the end of Arc 5, when Emilia was given a new and much more powerful Pyroxene Crystal. With it, she would be able to reunite with the Great Spirit of Fire, though she still needs to accumulate enough mana so he could manifest.
  • Enchanted Clothing: Emilia has an enchanted robe and hooded mantle that conceals her identity. The robe was given to her by Roswaal, in order to avoid any unwanted situations due to her race. Following the events of Arc 4, however, Emilia decided to stop using the cloak, as according to her, one cannot be a proper leader if they're constantly hiding from others.
  • A Fragment of the Divine Dragon's Talon: Following the climax of Arc 6 and the liberation of the Pleiades Watchtower, Emilia became the Watchtower's administrator, as she was the one who solved all three trials. This resulted in her having control over the tower and its inhabitants–namely, the Divine Dragon Volcanica. In order to prevent the Witch Cult or anyone else to access the Tower, Emilia tasked the Dragon with guarding the Watchtower and warding off anyone who approaches–though in typical Emilia fashion, she also ordered the Dragon not to harm a living being, no matter what. Volcanica then gave the half-elf a fragment of its jet-black talon, which was observed by Beatrice to be brimming with mana. It was soon concluded that the Dragon would be able to recognise its talon from far away, and not attack Emilia or anyone else who will be holding the talon at the time. It should be also said that the talon does not have any other purpose besides what has already been mentioned.

Trivia

  • Emilia is Tappei Nagatsuki's favorite Re:Zero character. At one point, he even stated that she's one of the main reasons why he started writing the story in the first place. He also said he doesn't like ranking his characters but Emilia comes first and all other Re:Zero characters are ranked second.[12]
  • According to the author, Emilia's birthday is September 23.[13]
  • Emilia is the hardest character for Tappei to write because she's an idealized character and he can't have her speak and act poorly.[14]
  • She's terrible at singing due to being tone-deaf.[15]
  • Fortuna's sanpakugan is Emilia's favorite physical feature of her. Subaru also shares these types of eyes.
  • In this short story, Emilia learned the phrase "it's better to hear thank you than sorry" from Geuse, which she still kept to heart even after she had forgotten about him.[16]
  • Due to the hardships she went through because of it, after awakening, Emilia began to hate her own appearance and to an extent, she would subconsciously avoid mirrors. Puck, noticing her deep mental trauma, would remove anything reflective from her vicinity and stipulated it as part of their contract.[17]
  • Emilia created a map of Elior Forest which she spent over seven years making.
  • Aside from the pyroxenes she traded, Emilia also pawned off trinkets and other things she found which she didn't need to human villages. An incident like this is actually what started the conflict present in Bond of Ice.
  • Emilia is stated to be the most beautiful female character in the series, according to the author.[18]
  • Emilia is stated to be roughly as strong as the original Roswaal A Mathers.[19]
  • Ever since Fortuna's death 100 years ago, Emilia has been wearing her hairpin in order to always stay together with her late foster mother.[20]
  • She is one of the only two people in the world that can see the key that can unlock the Seal in the Elior Forest. The second person was not yet revealed.[21]
  • Author has stated that Emilia has the highest mana capacity in the world. Even higher than Roswaal L Mathers. [22]
  • Author also said that the name "Emilia" was his friend's idea. [23]
  • The reason Emilia has long hair is because Puck likes it. She also thought of cutting her hair short in the interlude of arc 4 after Puck's disappearance but was stopped by others. [24]
  • Emilia's favorite color is purple. [25]
  • Because of complications in her past Subaru estimates her exact age to be 114 (115 at arc 5+), but physically 18 (19 at arc 5+) and emotionally around 14 (15 at arc 5+)
  • According to Melakuera, Emilia was "born from the same cursed blood as the Witch" as well as calling her "the descendant of the Witch".
  • Author has compared Emilia to a hero in a game called "dragon quest". [26]
  • She has read stories about fairies and she views them in a very positive light, despite the fact that the term "fairy" is used to refer to evil spirits, in the new world.[27]
  • The series' illustrator Shinichirou Otsuka, considered Emilia to be the most difficult character to design. The reason he struggled with the design of Emilia the most was because of the pressure placed on him, considering that she was the main heroine of the series. It took him several days to produce a design for Emilia.[28]

Satella(サテラ) is the Witch of Envyresponsible for the Great Calamity400 years ago who is currently sealed in the Evil Sealing Stone Shrine, located somewhere underneath the Augria Sand Dunes, close to where the Pleiades Watchtoweris currently standing. In reality, the Witch of Envy(嫉妬の魔女) is a separate personality that formed when she took in incompatible Witch Factor of Envy. Satella formally debuted in Arc 4as a supporting character, whilst the Witch serves as an overarching antagonist throughout the series, appearing in pretty much every Arc so far, in one way or another.

She possesses a yet-unexplained connection to both Subaru and Emilia, and was also the one who gave Subaru Return by Death. Throughout the series, the Witch silences Subaru whenever he attempts to talk about his ability. Satella herself did not debut until Arc 4, where she and the other Witches helped Subaru accept himself and change his views on Return by Death.

Appearance

Satella, according to legend, is a half-human/half-elf demi-human woman with silver hair and eyes that are amethyst with a bluish tint to them. As a half-elf, Satella's ears are noticeably pointed. When she manifested before Petelgeuse in a realm devoid of light, the details of her face and the shape of her body were both obscured by pitch-black veils made out of mist. The mist that engulfed her form was so impossibly dark that it blotted out the darkness of the realm. In this state, Satella's eyes can be seen glowing brightly in contrast to the rest of her form.

When she attacked the Sanctuary in Emilia's body, Satella's form was once again obscured. Although the contours of her body were difficult to ascertain, the shadows surrounding her made her seem as though she wore a dress of darkness and had long raven-black hair. Her voice was muffled to the point that it was difficult to distinguish whether it belonged to a man or a woman.

In the anime adaptation, Satella's clothing deviated significantly from the description provided in the light novel. In the anime, she wore dark-purple thigh-high socks with golden frills on the top, a dark-purple one-piece mini-dress with golden flower decorations, and a long dark veil that covered a part of her face.

When Subaru encountered her at Echidna's tea party, she wore a black dress made of shadows that seemed to wave in accordance with her heartbeat. Initially, he was unable to see her face because of a black shadow covering her above her neck, which was created out of his reluctance to accept her, however he later accepts her and becomes able to see her face, mentioning afterward that she looked exactly the same as Emilia.

Personality

Contrary to popular belief, Satella and the Witch of Envy are separate personalities, formed when she took in incompatible Witch Factors. The two personalities tend to fight each other. Both personalities love Subaru, though the Witch of Envy personality is much more aggressive about it, while Satella is much more reasonable and cares deeply about his well-being.

According to Beatrice, Witch of Envy was starved for love before her imprisonment. For unknown reasons, the Witch was obsessively in love with Natsuki Subaru, who, to his knowledge, had never met her before in his life. In the shadow world she called home, Satella would simply sit idly and monotonously repeat the words "I love you" over and over again, seemingly swamped by her own obsessive feelings of love towards Subaru. She was incredibly possessive over Subaru, as she wouldn't allow him to tell anyone else the secret of Return by Death. She seemed to have no remorse nor did she pay attention to anyone other than Subaru, as she didn't hesitate to execute Emilia when Subaru told her about Return by Death.

If the secret of Return by Death was revealed to another person, Satella would find a method of bypassing her imprisonment and slaughter all of Subaru's allies in that timeline, presumably as a form of strong reprimand fuelled by her possessiveness. Although she usually paid no heed to the words of anyone including Subaru's, she once took noticeable offence after Subaru told her he preferred the other Witches of Sin over her.

History

400 years earlier, Satella absorbed the Witch Factors of Envy, which she had no compatibility with, resulting in the creation of her Witch of Envy personality. However, this alternate personality was not the reason for her subsequently going out of control and killing countless innocent people and nearly destroying the world. Despite the efforts of many, including the Dragon, the First Sword Saint, and the Sage, Satella was unable to be killed and was instead sealed in a shrine that was watched over by Shaula, until the end of Arc 6. Currently, the Pleiades Watchtower and Evil Sealing Stone Shrine are being watched over by the Divine Dragon Volcanica itself.

Despite being physically imprisoned near the Great Waterfall, Satella somehow maintained a link to Subaru's body and was constantly aware of his actions, and even managed to manifest in the shape of a shadowy figure multiple times throughout the first four Arcs and in the 6th Arc.

Abilities

Authority of Envy (嫉妬の権能 Shitto no Ken'nō): Satella is able to use the Authority of Envy.

  • Although the abilities of the Authority of Envy have yet to be revealed, in the Web Novel, Minerva mentioned during the Witches' Tea Party that Satella might direct her jealousy (妬み Netami) toward her if she stepped in between her and Subaru, suggesting that it's something that affects people remotely. This ability has been removed from the Light Novel, hence should not be considered as canon.

Immortality: One of Satella's most troublesome and dangerous abilities is her seemingly-flawless immortality. Although she could be injured and defeated, Satella's body couldn't be destroyed by any external force. Even the Flugel the Sage, who was said to be all-knowing, could not conceive a method to bring about Satella's death. Her immortality couldn't be bypassed by even Reid Astrea, the first Sword Saint, Volcanica, the Divine Dragon and Flugel, the aforementioned Sage, eventually resulting in her being sealed away, despite it being stated that Reid was stronger than her. It is unknown whether her immortality is part of her Authority of Envy or a completely different ability. By the time of Subaru's summoning, Satella has been alive for over four-hundred years while still sealed.

Shadow Control: Satella is able to generate and control shadows on a gargantuan scale, though it's unknown whether this is a part of her Authority of Envy or a completely different ability. They erode or destroy all life and matter around her as well as taking abstract things like thoughts and sometimes even memories and mixing them together. It's also shown that she's capable of manipulating someone's feelings and emotions, amplifying or fabricating them to her own liking.

  • Satella is able to create shadow tendrils which she uses to capture, impale and decimate her enemies. The tendrils are strong enough to hold transformed Garfiel in the air and incapacitate him. She is also able to slip the shadows into someone's body through wounds and disperse them outwards, effectively destroying the opponent from the inside out.
  • In the instances in which she has appeared even though still sealed, just showing up has caused the entire area she was in, to be completely enveloped in Shadows. After covering the area in Shadows, Witch of Envy then began absorbing everything around her–the more she absorbs the more mass her vortex of shadows gains.
  • By creating a veil of shadow over her person, Satella could seemingly nullify physical damage directed at her. Even the mighty blows of Garfiel Tinsel merely dissipated upon making contact with the Witch of Envy.
  • In some instances, she can also be seen creating hands from her shadows, similar to the Unseen Hand that came from the Authority of Sloth belonging to Witch Cult's Sin Archbishop of Sloth Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti. She often used a shadow hand to grip Subaru's heart whenever he spoke about his ability to anyone who isn't her. According to Puck, Satella was capable of manifesting over two-thousand shadow hands at once. She can also make the hands go intangible. It is unknown if Satella's shadow hands are in any way related to the Authority of Sloth.

Time Manipulation: The Witch of Envy has the power to manipulate the flow of time to a certain extent. She can seemingly manually turn back time whenever Subaru dies. Whenever Subaru tries to speak about his Return By Death ability, Satella seemingly freezes time then squeezes his heart with a shadow hand so as to forcibly and painfully silence him. It is unknown whether this is part of her Authority of Envy or a completely different ability.

Magic User (魔法使い Maho Tsukai): According to Beatrice, the Witch of Envy is capable of using Yin Magic, as she attempted to use an advanced spell form that would have teleported Subaru, Rem and Louis to a different location, but failed. It was noted by Julius and Beatrice, that the spell was a clump of Yin Magic, more akin to an advanced version of Shamak that was given direction.

Miasma: The Evil Sealing Stone Shrine where Satella is sealed is covered in the Witch's Miasma, which is so thick that it distorts everything in one’s view. The Miasma invades the minds of anyone it touches, annihilates their flesh, and corrupts their soul. During one of the failed loops of Arc 6, Subaru, Ram, Anastasia and Patrasche fell victim to the Witch's Miasma, going mad and killing each other in a bloody spectacle of betrayal.

Great Power: In her era, Satella was one of the most powerful people alive whose defeat could only be attained by the combined efforts of the strongest heroes of the time. Among the Witches of Sin who were reviled by the world, Satella was easily the mightiest. If not for the interference of the Sage, the Divine Dragon, and the Sage's apprentice, Satella would have overwhelmed and defeated the first Sword Saint, despite the Sword Saint being stronger than her. Even within the modern era, the Witch remained almost completely unrivalled in terms of power. The only two individuals whose strength surpassed her own are the current generation's Sword Saint Reinhard van Astrea and his legendary ancestor Reid Astrea who contributed to her defeat four hundred years ago. According to the author, if Satella and Reinhard were to fight, it would end in a stalemate as she wouldn't be able to land a finishing blow whereas Reinhard couldn't bypass her immortality.

Trivia

  • According to the author, the meaning behind Satella's name will be revealed in the final arc.[1]
  • According to the author, Satella lacks common sense, and the situation is so serious that her dictionary doesn't even have the word common sense.
  • In the anime, Satella received a redesign by Otsuka Shinichirou.
  • The author once stated that Satella is the second tallest of the witches.
  • Although Echidna initially stated that she and the other five witches were all killed by the Witch of Envy and "used them as sustenance", it is later revealed that their deaths, with the exception of Minerva, were uninvolved with the Witch of Envy. It is currently unknown if the Witch of Envy was actually involved with the other five witches' deaths in any way.
  • Satella is the only Witch of Sin who wasn't succeeded by a Sin Archbishop (except for Pandora and Hector). This was likely because, unlike the other Witches, Satella didn't perish, meaning her Witch Factor wasn't inherited by anyone.
  • Subaru has said the exact same phrase he said to Emilia in episode 1, to Satella at the end of the tea party, with the exact phrase being "I will save you no matter what". In Japanese:-『俺が、必ず――お前を、救ってみせる。』

The Witches of Sinare the posthumous overarching antagonistic faction of the 2014 Japanese dark fantasy light novel series Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, as well as its anime television series & manga adaptations of the same name. They are frequently mentioned in various short stories, side stories, and video games.

The Witches were a collection of seven women who each represented one of the seven deadly sins and each had a power called a Witch Factor that was related to their respective sin. There was no proper cohesion between the Witches, who each followed their own whims and only interacted with each other every so often.

Despite not actively seeking to spread harm others, the Witches were responsible for numerous destructive rampages and disasters that earned them a reputation of terror around the world. Eventually, the Witches were hunted down and kill one by one by those who sought to stop the spree of calamities.

However, another widely believed account suggests it was one of the Witches responsible for the deaths of the others. The Witch of Envy Satella, the most powerful of the Sins, allegedly devoured the six other women and began a destructive rampage that destroyed half of the entire world.

There were two additional Witches who represented sins that were once considered part of the seven before being phased out. These two "old" sins, the sins of Vanity and Melancholy, were practically unknown to history and were unreported among the causalities of the Great Calamity. At the least, Vanity was confirmed to have survived Satella's rampage.

Carmilla of Lust

Main article: Carmilla (Re:Zero)
Carmilla warning Subaru about Echidna.jpg

The Witch of Lust, Carmilla, was a timid young woman who despite representing the sin of Lust had a complete disinterest in love. That being said she recognised the importance that love had on life and would help people realize the love that others had for them if they couldn't notice it themselves. Her captivating beauty was the catalyst for many conflicts where whole factions or even nations would war for the right to possess her.

The Authority of Lust, which was dubbed the "Faceless Bride," allowed Lust to manipulate the minds of others so that they saw her as whomever they loved. Additionally, anyone who laid eyes on her would be completely captivated by her to the point that they would forget anything else. Most people who met her would die as they would forget to breathe in her presence, although the Witch was hardly perturbed by this. She was eventually burned at the stake, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Capella Emerada Lugunica.

Daphne of Gluttony

Main article: Daphne (Re:Zero)
Daphne explaining why she defended Subaru.png

The Witch of Gluttony, Daphne, had a bottomless stomach that always craved substance. It didn't matter what she ate, whether it was animals, furniture, or even people. She was a strong believer in survival of the fittest, citing that every life should have a fair chance at surviving, not just the sentient ones like humans. With her power, she was responsible for creating the man-eating monsters known as Mabeasts.

Aside from her ability to create mabeasts, the exact abilities bestowed by Daphne's Authority of Gluttony remain ambiguous. With the possible exception of the Witch of Envy, Daphne was presumably the most morally ambiguous of the Witches. She eventually starved to death in the Auguria Dunes, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by the siblings Louis Arneb, Lye Batenkaitos, and Roy Alphard.

Echidna of Greed

Main article: Echidna (Re:Zero)
Echidna reminding Subaru that learning everything was what she sought.png

The Witch of Greed, Echidna, had a thirst for knowledge that was never quenched regardless of how much she learned. In life, the bountiful wisdom she offered attracted many great men and women to earn her favor. Although the exact specifications of her Authority of Greed remain unclear, her mastery of all six magical elements was unparalleled save for possibly her apprentice Roswaal Mathers. Her body was eventually destroyed by the Holy Dragon Volcanica, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Regulus Corneas.

Her soul inhabited the tomb she was buried in and she was able to interact with the living when they entered the structure. Additionally, as she had collected the souls of the other Witches supposedly devoured by Satella, those Witches were also able to manifest in the tomb. Eventually, by possessing the body of the half-elf Ryuzu Meyer, Echidna was able to wander the world once again in the present day. In this form, she brought along the other Witches in a necklace that contained their souls.

Hector of Melancholy

Main article: Hector (Re:Zero)
Hector notices Echidna's arrival.png

The Devil of Melancholy, Hector, was one of the two "old" Deadly Sins and was the only known male member of the Witches of Sin. Befitting the sin of Melancholy that he represented, Hector had a gloomy outlook on the world and disdained working in a similar way to Sekhmet. He detested many things, including violence and exerting himself, although he wasn't above committing himself to either if it furthered his goals. Hector's role in history has been nearly forgotten, with only a handful of individuals remembering his existence.

His Authority of Melancholy seemed to give Hector the capability to manipulate gravitational fields, allowing him to apply a crush anyone or anything that he wanted to. He had some sort of history with the Witch of Greed Echidna, which eventually broiled into conflict between the two of them. Alongside Pandora of Vanity, he was one of the two Witches who were not confirmed to have died during the Great Calamity, although as activity relating to Hector has not occurred since before the disaster, it can't be said that he survived passed the massacre.

Minerva of Wrath

Main article: Minerva (Re:Zero)
Minerva criticizing Subaru for his attitude.png

The Witch of Wrath, Minerva, cared about nothing more than healing the physical ailments of wounded or sick people she encountered in her travels. Excluding Satella, Minerva was the most dangerous out of the Witches of Sin and caused the most damage, although she never actually sought to. Despite her reputation, Minerva was caring and fairly compassionate towards normal people.

Her Authority of Wrath allowed her to heal a person's wounds by striking them with a part of her body. However, the damage healed would be distributed randomly somewhere else in the world. In other words, for every person she saved another random person in the world would die. Minerva was aware of this, but as she only cared about the wounds she could see in front of her, she never ceased her crusade. She was eventually trapped by a group of elves and driven mad, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Sirius.

Pandora of Vanity

Main article: Pandora (Re:Zero)
Pandorawitch.png

The Witch of Vanity, Pandora, represented one of the two "old" Deadly Sins, namely the sin of Vanity. She had a distinct lack of empathy and was rarely seen to lose her composure. With her serene nature and unmatched otherworldly beauty, the Witch of Vanity was comparable to a figure of divine origin. Like Hector of Melancholy, Pandora's role in history was unrecorded and her relationship with the other Witches remains ambiguous.

Her Authority of Vanity allowed her to 'rewrite' events to her liking. With this tremendous power Pandora could resurrect herself, manipulate the memories and senses of other people, and teleport people to distant locations among many other things. Out of the Witches, Pandora was the only one confirmed to have survived the Great Calamity, and has since been involved with the Witch Cult that worships Satella as its leader.

Satella of Envy

Main article: Satella
Satella Long Shot opening.png

The Witch of Envy, Satella, was easily the most powerful of the Witches of Sin. Despite this, she was actually incompatible with the sin of Envy to the point that a separate personality formed when she tried to absorb her Witch Factor. Whereas one personality was fairly approachable, her alternate personality was the embodiment of Envy - possessive and remorseless. The capabilities of her Authority of Envy remain unclear, although she was also a capable practitioner of shadow magic.

One day, she began a ceaseless destructive rampage that resulted in the decimation of half of the world and reportedly the deaths of the six other Witches. As she could not be killed, Satella was imprisoned in a shrine at the edge of the world for all eternity. Her actions changed the course of history forever, and she was became considered the most evil individual to ever live. Four hundred years later, in the present day, the Witch summoned a boy named Subaru Natsuki to their world and bestowed a power on him that prevented him from dying. Although her motives remain unclear, Satella claims she did so because she loves him.

Sekhmet of Sloth

Main article: Sekhmet (Re:Zero)
Sekhmet introducing herself to Subaru.png

The Witch of Sloth, Sekhmet, was the very embodiment of the sin of Sloth. She was so lazy that she rarely did anything other than relaxing. She was considered the second most powerful Witch after Satella, and was apparently capable of defeating every weaker Witch simultaneously with ease. She was also the least dangerous to encounter by far and possessed the most common sense out of any of her comrades. Sekhmet was rather protective of the young Witch of Pride Typhon.

The Authority of Sloth allowed her to produce an invisible force field of sorts that was capable of crushing almost anything that stood in her way. She eventually fell from the Great Waterfalls to her death while fighting Volcanica, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti.

Typhon of Pride

Main article: Typhon (Re:Zero)
Typhon's reaction to Echidna's speech.png

The Witch of Pride, Typhon, was a young girl with a naïve outlook on the world. The daughter of an executioner, Typhon judged and delivered lethal punishment upon those she deemed guilty. However, her youthful outlook on justice lead her astray, as she judged people as guilty even if they felt only a shred of guilt over something in their past that wasn't worth punishing. As judge, jury, and executioner, Typhon would conduct many massacres.

The Authority of Pride allowed her to sense who felt guilty and completely shatter the bodies of those who did. With her power, Typhon was considered the third most powerful Witch after Satella and Sekhmet. She was eventually trapped in the Watergate city Pristela and drowned by a flood, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Stride Volakia, although he never displayed use of his Authority.

Witches.jpg

The Witches of Sin (大罪魔女 Taizai Majo) is a term in the Re:Zero world, used for a set of individuals who were previously tasked with governing over each of the Seven Deadly Sins.

We currently only have information regarding the individuals who were the last ones associated with the said term; seven women who governed over Greed, Pride, Wrath, Gluttony, Sloth, Lust and Envy and two individuals who govern over Vainglory and Melancholy, the two archaic sins.

History

The last known main seven Witches of Sin were active four hundred years ago before six of them died, leaving Satella the only one alive. At roughly the same time as the other Witches' demise, an unspecified event happened which caused Satella to go on a bloody rampage, destroying half of the world in an event that would soon become known as the Great Calamity. In order to stop her from completely destroying the world and not killing off the entire population of that time, the first Sword Saint, the Divine Dragon, the Sage and his apprentice formed an alliance and defeated the Witch of Envy, but due to Satella's immortality, she was sealed in a shrine made of sealing stone which is located near the Pleiades Watchtower in the Auguria Sand Dunes, and is currently watched over by the Sage's apprentice, where she has been located for the last four-hundred years.

The Witch of Vainglory, having survived the ordeal, continued to wander the world in pursuit of her own goals, whilst the Warlock of Melancholy seemingly disappeared from historical record.

Information

Well before the Great Calamity, the concept of Witches governing over the seven deadly sins wasn't unheard of, though it is not known who the previous Witches were, when they lived, what their personalities were, what their legacy is, or when and how they perished.

Roughly four hundred years ago, Sekhmet, Typhon, Daphne, Carmilla, Minerva, Echidna and Satella roamed the world. They were considered calamities due to their actions and their consequences: Typhon went around different towns and cities killing everyone who deemed themselves a sinner, Carmilla was the cause of countless unnecessary deaths of people who accidentally laid eyes on her, and with every usage of Minerva's Authority of Wrath, a natural disaster hit a random location in the world. While not necessarily evil at heart, they were directly or indirectly the cause for many hardships and catastrophes. Perhaps the least calamitous Witches were Echidna and Sekhmet, as Echidna spent her days satisfying her Greed, learning new things and acting as an all-knowing encyclopedia for people all around the world, Sekhmet spent her days in languid Sloth, not moving a muscle and not causing any disasters despite her being the second strongest of the witches.

The Witches shared a rather intricate and at times wholesome relationship. Typhon regarded Sekhmet as her "mommy" and often bathed her since the latter couldn't bother with such trivial chores. At least once per year, all seven Witches got together and had a calming tea party hosted by Echidna, which always took place in a different location in the world. It goes without saying that the area usually suffered a huge disaster and all the people in the large vicinity had to evacuate for safety reasons.

Occasionally, a Witch would go on a rampage, destroying entire towns and areas, killing hundreds or thousands of innocent people, directly or indirectly. Typhon was the most prone to such behavior since her childish view of the world and her values often conflicted with the common mindset. Sekhmet was usually sent to calm her down but she usually did more harm than good, more often than not doubling or tripling the damage and deaths. Daphne often went on rampages, eating everything in existence similar to the Oousagi. With her Authority of Lust clouding everyone's minds to the point of creating instant chaos and/or killing them in a matter of minutes, Carmilla inadvertently turned peaceful areas into devastated war zones with many casualties in their wake, toppling larger cities one after another.

Each witch has two image colours that represent them; Echidna's were white and black, Minerva's were blue and white, Sekhmet's were black and grey, Daphne's were black and purple, Typhon's were blue and green, Carmilla's were red and pink, Pandora's are gold and white, and Hector's are gold and brown.

In the end, each Witch met their end in very different ways with most of them not being connected with Satella's rampage:

  • Typhon drowned when she was trapped within Priestella's defences.
  • Sekhmet fell off the Great Waterfall while fighting the Divine Dragon.
  • Daphne starved to death in the Augria Sand Dunes.
  • Minerva was lured into a trap by a group of elves that were sent by an unnamed person. She ended up going mad and subsequently died at the hands of Satella, during the Great Calamity.
  • Carmilla burned to death in an unspecified location.
  • Echidna later collected their souls and went to the Sanctuary where Volcanica sealed her off in her tomb. Her death has not been stated yet.

Currently, only the locations of Typhon and Echidna's remains are known. Typhon's remains are located in the Great Temple under the Watergate City of Priestella and Echidna's resting place is located in the Witch of Greed's Tomb located in the Sanctuary.

Despite their status as calamities, the Witches left quite a legacy after their deaths, with three in particular memory. Echidna created a lot of Meteors that are used to the current day, namely by people who are unable to channel magic. Daphne's legacy is perhaps the most destructive and negative as she was directly responsible for the creation of all Demon Beasts. Despite good intentions, Daphne failed to understand or even consider common mindset and morals, creating a plethora of monsters that would go on to do everything other than what they were created for. Instead of solving famine and hunger, the beasts have destroyed towns and larger cities, leaving many areas uninhabitable. The Three Great Demon Beasts have proven the most disruptive by far, ravaging the lands of the known world for centuries. Typhon on the other hand, seems to be rather popular in certain cities all over the world, as she has a cult following from a criminal organization situated in Flanders.

There's generally one rule of thumb that everyone has been keeping in mind: Do not publicly talk about other Witches besides Satella and avoid publicly announcing the possession of a Witch-related artifact. The Witch Cult does not tolerate any other Witch besides the aforementioned Witch of Envy. While they do acknowledge their existence, the Witches themselves (even their names) are taboo, and violating that said taboo will lead to a very painful and often fatal judgement. Perhaps the best and most well known example of that would be the Garkla incident, which occurred 15 years before the start of the main story, when the infamously unbreachable Vollachian fortress city of Garkla was single-handedly besieged and destroyed by the Sin Archbishop of Greed despite being garrisoned by thousands of soldiers and the Vollachian War God, all thoroughly prepared for battle. Rumour has it that a Witch-related artifact was being auctioned in the city square. It's unknown whether the rumour was true or if someone just made it up so they could bring the Witch Cult to the city, but the unprecedented incident serves as a warning to the Four Great Nations to this day.

Throughout the years, people developed some common misconceptions regarding the Witches; specifically regarding the Witch of Envy. Perhaps the most common mistake people make is contributing the creation of the Demon Beasts to the aforementioned Witch, common belief being that she created them in order to clean the world and get rid of humanity, which is untrue as Daphne is the true creator of the Demon Beasts with an entirely different purpose in mind. Rumours like these spawn further questions of just what other false information is circling around the world regarding the Witches.

Alongside the aforementioned Witches of Sin, two more made their rare appearances; Hector of Melancholy and Pandora of Vainglory. Contrary to other members of the Witches of Sin, there is next to no written historical information about them, not even their current statuses; Hector's one and only appearance predates the Great Calamity and Pandora's last appearance can be traced back to the failed subjugation of the White Whale and the previous generation's Sword Saint's death from 15 years before Subaru's arrival. On top of that, Pandora seems to be working with the Witch Cult, being heavily connected with their activities and overall intentions through the last four centuries, using the Sin Archbishops to carry out her biddings.

Echidna's soul inhabited the tomb she was buried in and she was able to interact with the living when they entered the structure. Additionally, as she had collected the souls of the other five Witches supposedly devoured by Satella, those Witches were also able to manifest in the tomb. Eventually, by possessing the body of the half-elf Ryuzu Meyer copy Shima, Echidna was able to wander the world once again in the present day. In this form, she brought along the other Witches in a necklace that contained their souls.

She decided to go to Kararagi, her goal remained unknown. While on her journey, Omega met Colette and her friend Palmyra. The two girls decided to travel with Omega, and are currently in Gusteko.

Witch of Greed, Echidna

Main article: Echidna
Re Zero Volume 12 14.jpg

The Witch of Greed, Echidna, had a thirst for knowledge that was never quenched regardless of how much she learned. In life, the bountiful wisdom she offered attracted many great men and women to earn her favor. She created the Artificial Spirits Puck, Beatrice, and Eridna for an unknown purpose, however she made a vow with Puck that forbade him from forming a contract with Emilia on his own. Echidna created the Ryuzu copies (such as Omega and Sphinx) by using the original Ryuzu as a basis for the clones in an experiment to research immortality, with her copying her memories and knowledge to the copies, however, her experiment was never completed because she died before she could even finish it. She also crafted many Meteors before her untimely demise, which are used to the current day, namely by people who are unable to channel magic.

A long time ago, Echidna worried about everything, thinking of them as children that needed to be protected. She thought it was easy to control a world where things broke apart with the swing of a hand, however she decided to put her efforts into protecting things instead. Despite this, no matter what she tried, she was unable to do anything by herself, making her experience how powerless she was. Although she despaired, she didn't give up, knowing that she could reach her goal if she had more people with common interests. From that point on, she kept persevering, no matter how much she lost or was hurt, all to reach her goal.

Although the exact specifications of her Authority of Greed remain unclear, her mastery of all six magical elements was unparalleled save for possibly her apprentice Roswaal A Mathers. The abilities of her Authority of Greed have yet to be revealed, however, it is implied that the Book of Wisdom is tied to it, having created two copies of it for her apprentice Roswaal and her creation Beatrice. Echidna located, collected and preserved the souls of the five other Witches of Sin after their deaths inside her tomb, allowing them to manifest in her Castle of Dreams. Her body was eventually sealed by the Divine Dragon Volcanica within the Sanctuary inside her tomb, although her death has yet to be stated, the Witch of Greed herself claims that Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Regulus Corneas, then later inherited by Natsuki Subaru.

In the past, people in the world around Minerva were constantly fighting, causing her to cry. Eventually, she realized that crying wouldn't solve anything and decided to train herself in order to gain enough power to be a deterrent to fighting, though that still didn't change anything. As she fought, she came to understand that she'd been crying out of rage and not sorrow, causing her to start punching people, resulting in their wounds being healed. From that moment on, she traveled the world to heal people wherever she found people in need. Many nations sent troops after her, trying to capture and/or defeat her, but no one was able to successfully catch her. Minerva also has some kind of history with elves as she cared deeply about Emilia and the other elves.

Witch of Sloth, Sekhmet

Main article: Sekhmet
Re Zero Volume 13 5.jpg

The Witch of Sloth, Sekhmet, was the very embodiment of the sin of Sloth. She was so lazy that she rarely did anything other than relaxing. She was considered the second most powerful Witch after Satella, and was apparently capable of defeating every weaker Witch simultaneously with ease. She was also the least dangerous to encounter by far and possessed the most common sense out of any of her comrades. Sekhmet was rather protective of the young Witch of Pride Typhon.

Before she was born, Sekhmet's clan, the Giants, expected things from her, wanting to bring back their founder known as God. However, after she was born, she disappointed them, causing them to hold her in disdain and abandon her as punishment. Many years later, upon hearing of a wild woman in the mountains, men came and captured her, taking her down to the city. While there, she gained knowledge, a way of life, and emotions. Eventually, not understanding at the time that what she felt was gratitude and obligation, she snapped the necks of the men in the place she lived in and left. Returning to her homeland, she proceeded to kill her entire clan, not understanding at the time that what she felt was hatred and a desire for revenge. She then returned back to her previous home to give the men she killed a proper burial, and once she was alone, she felt a peace of mind, which she felt happy about.

The Authority of Sloth allowed her to produce an invisible force field of sorts that was capable of crushing almost anything that stood in her way. She eventually fell from the Great Waterfalls to her death while fighting the Divine Dragon Volcanica, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti, then later inherited by Natsuki Subaru.

Witch of Gluttony, Daphne

Main article: Daphne
Re Zero Volume 11 15.jpg

The Witch of Gluttony, Daphne, had a bottomless stomach that always craved substance. It didn't matter what she ate, whether it was animals, furniture, or even people. She was a strong believer in survival of the fittest, citing that every life should have a fair chance at surviving, not just the sentient ones like humans. With her power, she was responsible for creating the man-eating monsters known as Demon Beasts so as to end world hunger, although the claim of creating such monsters became known as the Witch of Envy's own accomplishment so as to destroy the world.

A long time ago, a man was afflicted with an incurable disease, and, as he was afraid of dying, he began using various methods to try and prolong his life. Daphne was one of the many people he used in his experiments, and eventually he succeeded in achieving his goal by using her body. In his joy, he forcibly undid her binds, and when she came to her senses she found herself all alone in the man's castle, suffering from hunger. To satisfy her hunger, she began eating everything in the castle, including things like the throne and the carpets, and resorted to eating what she threw up when necessary. As she was immortal, she couldn't die, however she felt like she was going to die from hunger. Eventually, she somehow began creating Demon Beasts in the castle, which she considered to be illusions at the time, and started to use them as a food source. After a while, her binds broke from the fighting between her and the beasts, allowing her to leave the castle. The Demon Beasts also left and spread across the world.

Aside from her ability to create Demon beasts, the exact abilities bestowed by Daphne's Authority of Gluttony remain ambiguous. With the possible exception of the Witch of Envy, Daphne was presumably the most morally ambiguous of the Witches as her form of logic is incomparable to that of other humans. She eventually starved to death in the Auguria Dunes, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by the siblings Louis Arneb, Lye Batenkaitos, and Roy Alphard.

Witch of Pride, Typhon

Main article: Typhon
Re Zero Volume 11 13.jpg

The Witch of Pride, Typhon, was a young girl with a naïve outlook on the world. The daughter of an executioner, Typhon judged and delivered lethal punishment upon those she deemed guilty. However, her youthful outlook on justice led her astray, as she judged people as guilty even if they felt only a shred of guilt over something in their past that wasn't worth punishing. As judge, jury, and executioner, Typhon would conduct many massacres.

The Authority of Pride allowed her to sense who felt guilty and completely shatter the bodies of those who did. With her power, Typhon was considered the third most powerful Witch after Satella and Sekhmet. She was eventually trapped in the Watergate city Priestella and drowned by a flood, although another claim suggests Satella devoured her. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Stride Vollachia, although he never displayed use of his Authority and the current inheritor of the Pride Witch Factor is unknown.

Witch of Lust, Carmilla

Main article: Carmilla
Re Zero Volume 12 12.jpg

The Witch of Lust, Carmilla, was a timid young woman who despite representing the sin of Lust had a complete disinterest in love. That being said she recognised the importance that love had on life and would help people realize the love that others had for them if they couldn't notice it themselves. Her captivating beauty was the catalyst for many conflicts where whole factions or even nations would war for the right to possess her. According to Echidna, Carmilla only cares for herself and holds deep grudges if you were to harm or trick her in any way regardless if she's in the wrong. In the past, Carmilla was the reason why her village, the neighboring villages and cities and even the great country she lived in, were engulfed in the flames of war. Everyone desired and loved her but she desired none of it, hence she left everything and everyone behind in search of the love she lost.

A long time ago, Carmilla was a normal girl who was loved by the people in her village and even had a fiancé. However, one day a man of power came to the village and desired her. Angered by the man's actions, the villagers rose up in defiance and fought against him, eventually burning him with his mansion. The cities and villages around theirs began to regard them as dangerous, causing the fighting to spread, and soon their force was toppling countries, all the while claiming that it was for her sake. Carmilla began to be regarded as a heavenly maiden, nevertheless, she didn't desire such a thing, and saw that they were being misled by their own fantasies and manipulated by their ideals. After they had toppled a large country, her fiancé proposed to her at the top of the castle, though she ignored him and left everything behind, despairing that what she had originally wanted no longer existed.

The Authority of Lust, which was dubbed the "Faceless Bride," allowed Lust to manipulate the minds of others so that they saw her as whoever they loved. Her Witch Factor was inherited by Capella Emerada Lugnica.

Others

Witch of Vainglory, Pandora

Main article: Pandora
Re Zero Volume 14 10.jpg

The Witch of Vainglory, Pandora, represented one of the two "old" Deadly Sins, namely the sin of Vainglory. She had a distinct lack of empathy and was rarely seen to lose her composure. With her serene nature and unmatched otherworldly beauty, the Witch of Vainglory was comparable to a figure of divine origin. Like Hector of Melancholy, Pandora's role in history was unrecorded and her relationship with the other Witches remains ambiguous.

Her Authority of Vainglory allowed her to 'rewrite' events to her liking. With this tremendous power, Pandora could resurrect herself, manipulate the memories and senses of other people, and teleport people to distant locations among many other things. Out of the Witches, Pandora was the only one confirmed to have survived the Great Calamity, and has since been involved with the Witch Cult that worships Satella.

Warlock of Melancholy, Hector

Main article: Hector
Re Zero Volume 14 8.jpg

The Warlock of Melancholy, Hector, was one of the two "old" Deadly Sins and was the only known male member of the Witches of Sin. Befitting the sin of Melancholy that he represented, Hector had a gloomy outlook on the world and disdained to work in a similar way to Sekhmet. He detested many things, including violence and exerting himself, although he wasn't above committing himself to either if it furthered his goals. Hector's role in history has been nearly forgotten, with only a handful of individuals remembering his existence.

His Authority of Melancholy seemed to give Hector the capability to manipulate gravitational fields, allowing him to apply a crush on anyone or anything that he wanted to. He had some sort of history with the Witch of Greed Echidna, which eventually broiled into a conflict between the two of them. Following his and Echidna's faceoff, some time before the Great Calamity, any and all traces of his activity have vanished. His fate still remains unknown.

Trivia

  • All names of the Witches of Sin are related to asteroids, except for Satella, whose name is scheduled to be explained in the last Arc.
  • According to the author, all the witches will reappear in Arc 11.
  • According to Tappei, the strength ranking of the 7 Witches of Sin is as follows: Satella >> Sekhmet >>> Typhon > Daphne >> Echidna = Carmilla >>>>> Minerva (Minerva being by far the weakest in offense due to her healing abilities).
  • According to Tappei, the degree of risk among the 6 Witches (not including Satella) is as follows: Minerva > Daphne > Carmilla > Typhon > Echidna >>>>>>> Sekhmet.
  • According to Tappei, in terms of common sense, the Witches are ranked as follows: Sekhmet > Carmilla > Daphne > Echidna > Minerva > Typhon; Satella isn't included because she doesn't even have a word like that in her dictionary.
  • Echidna initially states that she and the other Witches were killed by the Witch of Envy, but later it is revealed that most of their deaths had no involvement from the Witch of Envy.

Echidna(エキドナ) was the Witch of Greed. Mentioned throughout the series, particularly for her connection to Roswaaland Beatrice, she formally debuted in Arc 4as a major supporting character and later secondary antagonist.

Throughout Arc 4, her soul served as the overseer of the trials to remove the magic barrier surrounding Sanctuary. Learning of Return By Death, she attempted to get close with Subaru, but he cut her off after discovering her motives. At the end of the Arc, she achieved complete rebirth by transferring her soul into Ryuzu Shima, named herself Omega and wandered off into the world with the souls of the other five Witches in a pyroxene crystal necklace.

Appearance

Echidna's barely-exposed skin was porcelain-like and pure white, so white that it seemed any semblance of color had been completely bleached from her existence. Her black eyes shone with intellect and were the only part of the woman that looked alive. Her long straight hair reached down to her back and was as white as her skin, and it also had a black butterfly hairpin (jade green in the anime). Anyone who saw her would be instantly captivated by her striking beauty, although the sight of her would also inject overwhelming fear into a person's soul. Although her spirit was nineteen years old, her slender body appeared as though it was in its mid-twenties.

The only parts of her body that were visible were her head, neck, and hands, as the rest of her figure was wrapped in clothing most of the time. The contrast between her black clothing and the whiteness of her skin helped express her striking beauty. During her meeting with Subaru in the trial of his past, Echidna wore clothing fabricated from Subaru's memories. The outfit she donned was the female version of the school uniform worn at Subaru's high-school in Japan. The ensemble consisted of a white dress shirt, a navy-blue blazer with the school's crest sewn onto the left breast, a red ribbon tied around the shirt's collar, a grey pleated short mini-skirt, knee-high white socks, and white uwabaki slippers with brown soles. Instead of her usual hair ornament, Echidna wore a smaller red butterfly clip in her hair.

Despite her extraordinary beauty, Echidna induces overwhelming fear known as miasma in everyone "lucky" enough to meet her to the point people start vomiting in her presence. If exposed to her miasma for too long, the people in her presence would die. It is worth mentioning that, while he somehow did not receive that side effect, Subaru did note her presence felt as dangerous or more so than the White Whale or the Sin Archbishop of Sloth.[1]

In actuality, Echidna from four centuries ago and Echidna from the Castle of Dreams were stated to be two separate entities. Accordingly, their appearances slightly vary–while being mostly identical, Echidna from four centuries ago was noted to be in her mid to late twenties, rather than late teens. Her face was almost the exact same as Trials Echidna, save for a much calmer and wise air it gave off.

She was often seen smiling and acting very nonchalantly, until the topic shifted to something she was genuinely interested in. Due to her beautiful appearance, she often gave off a maidenly impression.

Personality

Echidna's curiosity toward the unknown and thirst for knowledge were the two things that defined her behavior. She referred to it as love and directed those feelings toward Subaru's Return by Death, which she was interested to the point that she longed to become his advisor to record the many possibilities created with Subaru's Authority.

At first glance, she was polite, soft-spoken, understanding, and even a bit childish. She was stated by the other Witches to be quite clumsy like the time when she accidentally set the forest on fire, nearly burning to death, as she was trying to warm herself.[2] She was also somewhat forgetful in regards to daily tasks, almost forgetting her pyroxene crystal necklace that contained the souls of the other Witches and would've left it had it not been for Colette and Palmyra bringing it to her.[3] The other Witches also mentioned that she once forgot to change from her nightgown, and accidentally went out in public without properly dressing.[4]

Described as being black hearted, she could not understand the feelings of others, and could be seen as a sociopath by normal standards. If it was to get a hold of more knowledge, she had no problems with employing sophistry, lying, and deceiving others. She was reasonably polite and even jovial to Subaru, whenever the two interacted. Even after the reveal that she was pretty much a sociopath and after Subaru called her a monster, she kept acting like an affable individual. Though Echidna ultimately respected Subaru's decision to press on in his struggles without her help, she revoked his qualifications for entering her Castle of Dreams, as payback for not taking her hand. However, she interacted with extremely hostile will only toward three people in the world: Emilia, Satella, and one other unnamed individual.

History

A long time ago, Echidna worried about everything, thinking of them as children that needed to be protected. She thought it was easy to control a world where things broke apart with the swing of a hand, however she decided to put her efforts into protecting things instead. Despite this, no matter what she tried, she was unable to do anything by herself, making her experience how powerless she was. Although she despaired, she didn't give up, knowing that she could reach her goal if she had more people with common interests. From that point on, she kept persevering, no matter how much she lost or was hurt, all to reach her goal.[5]

Over 400 years ago, she served as a tutor for young Roswaal after saving him. In the following years, she created three Artificial spirits and started researching means of immortality by transferring her soul into a body which belonged to someone else. Throughout the years, she gathered humans and demi-humans alike, in order to create a perfect "sanctuary" which would be able to support the barrier. When Roswaal was 16 years old, he faced off against Hector and after being defeated and nearly killed, Echidna saved his life and engaged Melancholy. After Ryuzu Meyer, the Apostle of Greed, sacrificed herself in order to bypass the requirements and instantly activate the barrier, she successfully fended Hector off and saved the lives of everyone in the Sanctuary.

According to her, royals of every country came to visit Echidna to borrow her wisdom at some point in the past when she was alive.

After the deaths of Typhon, Minerva, Daphne, Carmilla, and Sekhmet, Echidna later collected their souls and went to the Sanctuary where Volcanica sealed her off in her tomb. Her death has not been stated yet, however she initially states that the Witch of Envy killed her and the other five Witches, though this is later contradicted when how the other witches died was revealed.

Abilities

Authority of Greed (強欲の権能 Gōyoku no Ken'nō): Echidna was able to use the Authority of Greed.

  • Book of Wisdom (叡智の書): Book of Wisdom is a white book that allowed her to draw knowledge from the world's memory. The book didn't just know the present and past, it also knew what would happen in the future, and drew its needed information from there. The mind of an ordinary person attempting to read it would be fried by the sheer amount of knowledge flowing into the reader's mind. It is implied that the Book of Wisdom is connected to her Authority of Greed in some way[6], most likely being made with the usage of Echidna's ability. She later crafted two imperfect replicas of her Book of Wisdom, giving them to her creation Beatrice and apprentice Roswaal A Mathers.

Magic (魔法 Mahō): Echidna was able to use all six elements and was extremely skilled in all of them with–at the time–unparalleled mastery. She was capable of using every spell that existed at the time, and even created her own spells to use. Even following her death, no one ever came close to her overall skill with manipulating magic, until Roswaal L Mathers became the first and only person who would rival and even surpass her in magical knowledge and proficiency. It should also be noted that there exist individual beings who're stronger in the usage of a specific magical element, such as Puck, who was noted as the most powerful Fire Magic user in the series, with the raw power of his spells even surpassing that of Roswaal's.

  • Goa (ゴーア): Echidna was able to manifest a blaze of fire to incinerate foes.
  • Jiwald (ジワルド): Jiwald allowed Echidna to fire heat rays from her fingers which would effortlessly pierce her enemies.
  • Healing Magic: Echidna summoned water mana to heal the wounds of herself and others, however it only affected physical ones.
  • Teleportation: Like Beatrice, Echidna was capable of Teleportation Magic, with no one else holding the capabilities to display such type of magic, not even her genius disciple Roswaal.
  • Al Shario (アル・シャリオ): Echidna was capable of casting a spell that literally brought the stars down to earth, massacring her opponents. The speed of the stars was described to be almost impossible to evade. She once used this spell to massacre a swarm of around 100 Silver Dragons.
  • Soul Transference: Soul Transference was a lost forbidden magic art that allows a person to move their spirit from one body to another by overwriting the soul of the target body with their own. By doing this over and over to extend their life indefinitely, the user can in theory achieve what Beatrice termed as "subjective immortality". However it has one major restriction in that for it to work, the person whose soul is overwritten must be of blood-relation to the caster. The spell was originally created by Echidna to gain immortality, but she could not complete it before her demise. Instead, it was finished by Roswaal who had been using it to survive until the present era.

Item/Life Construction: During her lifetime, Echidna created a variety of items and beings due to her vast intellect and absolute mastery of magic.

  • Artificial Spirit Creation: Echidna created three Artificial Spirits: Puck, Beatrice, and Echidna. It is unknown how she created them, but it is stated that she turned Puck into an artificial spirit.
  • Clone Creation: Echidna was capable of creating Ryuzu Meyer copies through unknown methods by using the original Ryuzu Meyer as a basis for an experiment to research immortality. According to Ryuzu Alma, the clones' bodies are made of mana instead of flesh and bone, which is an artificial Od that is surrounded & together with mana. After the Sanctuary's fall, it is revealed that Echidna has slowly been latching more and more of her soul onto Shima, untill she successfully hijacked her body, later renaming herself into Omega.
  • Meteor Creation: Echidna created many Meteors before her untimely demise, which are used to the current day, namely by people who are unable to channel magic. One of these Meteors is Echidna's Meteor Staff, which is currently used by Felt. The vastly popular Conversations Mirrors that can be seen throughout the series is also one of her creations.

Vast Intellect: As the embodiment of knowledge and Greed, Echidna was obsessed with gaining knowledge and was in possession of The Book of Wisdom which could show her the world's memory. Echidna possessed one of the greatest intellects in the world, and had conducted numerous experiments with magic, creating powerful meteors. Numerous people from every nation used to come to her, seeking her knowledge when she was alive. She possessed vast knowledge about the older era, to the point she could boast there is nothing she didn't know.

Miasma: According to Echidna from the Castle of Dreams, she was known for emitting intense miasma that caused people to throw up in her vicinity. If exposed to it for too long, one would be at risk for falling into madness or suffering a mental breakdown, and even dying. Omega used this miasma to kill eighteen bandits in thirty seconds, as soon as she left the Sanctuary. She also noted that someone with the qualifications to become a Sage Candidate would be able to resist her miasma. It is worth mentioning that, while he somehow did not receive that side effect–likely due to his qualifications for becoming a Sage Candidate–, Subaru did note her presence felt as dangerous or more so than the White Whale or the Sin Archbishop of Sloth[7].

Castle of Dreams: A special space outside the world, which Echidna from the Castle of Dreams has control of, is mentioned to be her dream. Echidna's and the other five Witches' souls manifest within this space after their deaths. The Castle of Dreams primarily takes the form of a seemingly limitless empty grassland with a little hill in the middle, although Echidna can change its appearance at will, being able to turn it into a dark empty void as if a curtain had fallen upon the world. She is capable of creating portals in and out of the Castle of Dreams. Due to it being outside of the world, Subaru suffered none of the penalties from Return By Death while within the Castle of Dreams though Echidna had stated that if he died in the Castle of Dreams, his soul would shatter, resulting in his real body's death as well.

Memory Manipulation: Echidna from the Castle of Dreams was capable of searching through the memories of others, shown in Arc 4 where she rummages through Subaru's memories to recreate a Japanese high school girl uniform. She was also capable of erasing memories, as seen in Arc 4 where she temporarily seals away Subaru's memories of their meeting in the Castle of Dreams to follow the rule about it being forbidden to talk about their "little tea party" until his trial went underway.

Echidna's English voice actress Anairis Quiñones recorded the monologue in sections and took multiple takes. That being said, Quiñones also stated that it took less time to record than she thought it would.

    Common Tropes

  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Deconstructed. Perhaps it's due to their powers or upbringing but none of them operate mentally on the same level as other mortal beings with Daphne being the most egregious of them all. Overall, while they are capable of normal morality, they generally don't act on it.
  • Good All Along: Downplayed. The witches are still largely responsible for nearly everything that goes wrong in Re:Zero, however, they are nowhere near as amoral as their cult worshipers are. Almost all of them are just ordinary girls who were dealt very bad hands in life.
  • Historical Villain Upgrade: The Witches are nowadays regarded with both dread and loathing, so much so that merely saying their name is taboo. However, as Subaru and the audience came to find out, none of the Witches are truly evil with most of them having different concepts of morality and some of them had good intentions when they were alive. Even Satella is a far more sympathetic character than history tells her to be.
    • The only exception is Pandora, who not only is the benefactor, and possible actual leader, of the Witch Cult, but the only witch that can be described as being truly evil, and yet Satella is basically her scapegoat.
  • Our Gods Are Different: Deconstructed. They are never referred to as gods in the setting but they nonetheless hold great power that they might as well be gods. They are the reason why the Mabeasts exist, the reason why non-humans have emotions, and the reason why the world is the way it is. While most of the original seven are dead they all continue to persist as souls long after their flesh has rotted away.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Each of the Witches could very well be equated to a force of nature rather than a mere person, and some were known to unintentionally cause destruction and loss of life on a catastrophic scale. Minerva's power caused natural disasters to spring up in random parts of the world, Typhon could wipe out a city in a matter of days by simply trying to judge its inhabitants, Carmilla's passive use of her Authority left entire crowds frozen in place until their untimely deaths, and Daphne unleashed the myriad species of vicious, predatory mabeasts upon the world, of which the three most infamous were only the tip of a vast iceberg. Sekhmet and Echidna were comparatively the most harmless of these, although Echidna was known to meddle in human affairs to potentially disastrous results out of simple curiosity, while Sekhmet was too lazy to use her powers responsibly, meaning that, whenever she did try and do something, she'd just mess up disastrously. Oh, and let's not forget Satella swallowing half the world. Allegedly...
  • Seven Deadly Sins: As is clear from their name, each of the Witches represented one of the cardinal Sins from Christian theology, holding the Witch factor their personality was most compatible with. Uniquely, the story also incorporates two of the archaic Sins since discontinued, and both the characters representing them (Pandora and Hector respectively) seem to hold themselves somewhat apart from the main seven.

Witches of Sin

    Satella

The Witch of Envy, one of the 7 witches also called the greatest evil. According to legend, she was a silver-haired half-elf who destroyed half of the world 400 years ago in an event known as the Great Calamity before being sealed away by the Dragon, the Sword Saint, and the Sage to put an end to her rampage.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: She (or rather the Witch of Envy personality) is dangerously obsessed with Subaru and in one loop in which she possesses Emilia's body, she chases after him while gliding with her arms out toward Subaru as if trying to hug him and shouting "I LOVE YOU!" over and over again. Subaru, for his part, can only feel extreme fear and revulsion about the mere thought of getting hugged by her and would prefer to be eaten by the White Whale.
  • The Ace: The Witch of Envy was the most powerful entity in the world four hundred years ago. It took the combined power of the Dragon Volcanica, the Hero Reid Astrea, and the Sage Flugel to defeat her. She was able to destroy half of the world and was said to eclipse the might of all of the other Witches combined. The only person known to be more powerful than her was Reinhard van Astrea.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: The anime adaptation removes any mention that Satella and the Witch of Envy are two separate personalities, leaving no explanation as to why the Jealous Witch tended to behave differently at different times.
  • All Your Powers Combined: After killing all of the Witches of Sin, Satella absorbed their powers and became the modern Witch of Envy.
  • Anonymous Benefactor: Is one for Subaru by bringing him to Lugunica and giving him his power.
  • Ax-Crazy: The Jealous Witch personality is more than willing to murder those who come between her and Subaru. In the event that he told anyone about their secret, she would systematically kill all of his loved ones and then him with no remorse.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: When Subaru meets her, he asks her why she's so madly in love with him and wants him to live so desperately that she makes him come back whenever he dies. Satella claims that Subaru was the one who "gave her everything" by showing her the world, holding her hand, and kissing her when she was lonely. Since Subaru has no memory of any of this, it's a mystery what Satella is talking about here.
  • Black Cloak: Usually seen covered by a veil formed from her shadows.
  • Casting a Shadow: Satella is able to control shadows.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: As Subaru points out. "As soon as I mention another woman's name you get all worked up!"
  • Creepy Monotone: Whenever the Witch of Envy personality would encounter Subaru, she would begin repeatedly chanting the words "I love you" in a creepily monotonous voice. The voice performances of Rie Takahashi and Kayli Mills in their respective versions further emphasized the terrifying nature of the Witch's warped love.
  • Death Seeker: In Arc 4 it is revealed that Satella wants Subaru to kill her for some unknown reason.
  • The Dreaded: Simply speaking her name brings fear into all but the very brave or the ignorant.
  • Enigmatic Empowering Entity: It's heavily implied Satella is the one who brought Subaru into the other world and gave him his Return by Death power. Whatever her motivations for this might be is a mystery.
  • Evil Smells Bad: Bearers of the Witch Factors (including Satella) and their followers emitted a notable scent that could be detected by those who were familiar with it. Both Rem and Beatrice, who could detect the scent, noted that it smelled repugnant.
  • Evil Twin: Satella is the most legendary evil witch in the world of Re:Zero. Because Emilia looks just like her, she has been harshly discriminated against and shunned her entire life.
  • Evil Wears Black: As expected of a witch who is basically the equivalent of the devil of her world, Satella wears a black dress made of shadows.
  • Flower Motifs: The anime design of her dress has yellow roses on it, which is fitting since yellow roses symbolize envy.
  • The Ghost: Frequently mentioned as the greatest evil and someone to be very afraid of.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: She's currently sealed and hasn't acted as a direct antagonist in the arcs so far, but the Witch Cult that worships her and wants to revive her cause a lot of suffering for the main characters. Furthermore, it's also heavily implied that Satella was the one who gave Subaru his time loop ability as well as marking him with her scent, but her motives are unknown.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Like Emilia, Satella is a half-elf.
  • Hero Killer: Kills literally everyone at the Sanctuary in Arc 4, save for Subaru, who commits suicide to avoid getting stuck in her embrace.
  • Identical Stranger: She is said to look exactly like Emilia. Subaru confirms it when he meets Satella in one loop.
  • Leaking Can of Evil: The Evil Sealing Stone Shrine that serves as Satella's prison is unable to completely seal her because she is too powerful and is constantly surrounded by a lethal miasma and in one loop, she successfully escapes upon sensing Subaru was in the vicinity.
  • Loving a Shadow: The Witch of Envy is only in love with the concept of Subaru and wants his love, regardless of what he actually feels.
  • Madness Mantra: Her only words upon meeting Subaru are "I love you" and "Love me" repeated enough times that multiple pages consist of the phrases.
  • Minor Insult Meltdown: Subaru, during a masterstroke of inspiration, pushes Satella past her Rage Breaking Point by telling her that there are other witches he finds more attractive than her.
  • Misblamed: She is said to have been the one that created the Demon Beasts when in truth it was Daphne, the Witch of Gluttony, who did it.
  • Mysterious Past: Most of the mystery behind Satella is that the number of people alive who know who she was before she became the Witch of Envy can be counted on one hand.
  • Mystical White Hair: A half-elf witch with silver hair.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: She is Re:Zero's equivalent to Voldemort and is mainly referred to as the Witch of Envy. She is the strongest witch and destroyed half of the world.
  • Obviously Evil: A jet-black monster that kills people on sight isn't quite the nicest image.
  • Odd Name Out: Unlike everyone else related to the Witches, Satella lacks a name related to a celestial body or legend. It is, however, possible that her name is a misspelling of the name Stella, which is Italian for star. Most likely caused in part by the fact that Japanese scripts lack a syllable for 'Ste'. Writing Stella in Katakananote the writing system used for foreign words in Japanese requires adding a vowel between 's' and 't'. This would make sense since, unlike all of the other users of Authorities, Satella isn't naturally suited to using them and instead went crazy after absorbing the Authority of Envy.
  • Pointy Ears: Due to being a half-elf, Satella has pointy ears.
  • Power Parasite: It's implied that she is capable of using the Authorities of the Witches after she absorbed their Witch Factors.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Was sealed away 400 years ago by the Dragon, the Sword Saint, and the Sage in a shrine in the Auriga Desert east of Lugnica. Unfortunately for literally everyone, the prison is a Leaking Can of Evil.
  • Signature Headgear: She wears a black star hair clip on the right side of her bangs, mirroring Emilia's white butterfly hair clip.
  • Significant Double Casting: Both Satella and Emilia have the same voiceactresses to further hint at the mysterious Identical Stranger connection between the two.
  • Split Personality: Contrary to many people's beliefs, Satella and the Witch of Envy are actually two separate entities residing in one body. While the Witch of Envy is definitely evil, Satella is ambiguous. Both personalities are constantly in conflict with one another.
  • Time Master: Implied to be this considering that she gave Subaru Return by Death which shares aspects of Yin/Shadow magic
  • Tragic Monster: According to the other Witches, the original Satella was a good person, but she tried to absorb something that created the Witch of Envy and ended up destroying half the world; this might explain why she's a Death Seeker.
  • Victor Gains Loser's Powers: It's believed that she killed all of the other Witches and absorbed their powers. However, it is later revealed that all the other witches died under circumstances unrelated to Satella.
  • Villainous Crush: While she's known as the greatest evil in the world, Satella loves Subaru for unknown reasons. Whether she's really a villain or not is still questionable, which is further complicated with her split personalities.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She is said to have silver hair and is known as the world's greatest evil. Possibly subverted with the true Satella, however.
  • Wight in a Wedding Dress: Her appearance in Arc 4 when she possesses Emilia's body has Satella looking like a ghostly apparition wearing a black wedding dress covered in shadows.
  • Yandere: She is obsessively in love with Subaru. In one of the loops in which she escapes from her seal and possesses Emilia, she keeps saying "I LOVE YOU" over and over again while she mercilessly butchers those in between her and Subaru. This is mostly played straight with the Witch of Envy however. The true Satella plays with this as she is unstable and uncaring of anyone but Subaru, but is far more considerate of him as a person.

    Echidna

Echidna

Voiced by:Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese), Anairis Quiñones (English), Leyla Rangel (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/echidna.png
The Witch of Greed. One of the original Witches of Sin.
  • Adaptational Curves: The anime has given Echidna a more prominent chest than in the light novel.
  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Not her exactly, but her butterfly hairpin is described as black in the WN and LN while the anime made it green with black outlines.
  • Affably Evil: She is reasonably polite and even jovial to Subaru, whenever the two interacted. Even after The Reveal that she is pretty much a sociopath and after Subaru called her a monster, she keeps acting like this, even keep aiding him, thus heavily implying that this is genuine of her. The only people she acts hostile are Satella, Emilia, and another person.
  • Animal Motifs: She's associated with butterflies, same as her "daughter" Beatrice. Besides her iconic butterfly hairpin, the third anime opening shows her releasing butterflies from her hands.
  • The Archmage: She's noted to be one of the three characters with the greatest magical potential in the series, though Roswaal is mentioned to be around her level, with her capability of using all forms of magic in the world.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Interprets one of Subaru's serious gazes towards her as something quite different from what it was meant to be. She starts talking about how they can't do such a thing since he is living and she is dead, and when he corrects her misunderstanding she ends up pretty disappointed.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: At first glance, she is polite, understanding, and even a bit childish. This, coupled with him being able to talk about Return by Death with her, leads Subaru to greatly enjoy talking with her in spite of his early misgivings. Then he realizes the reason behind this behavior is her Lack of Empathy. She knows about human feelings but doesn't truly understand them, so she says whatever she needs to gain his trust without really feeling anything. She ends up looking kind and quirky because, excluding moments where she is talking about her greed and curiosity, nearly every emotion she shows is faked.
    • Though with that said, later arcs and the author Q&A's on her imply this might be a Subverted Trope. While Echidna does have some trouble with certain emotions, she isn't actually as emotionless as she made herself out to be to Subaru during The Reveal. And it is notable that she does maintain elements of the personality she showed Subaru even when she isn't around him.
  • Bokukko: She uses the boyish pronoun 'boku' to refer to herself.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget: In Arc 6, her Book of the Dead shows that she used to be a lonely girl who just wanted to protect everyone she could, but while she knew every solution she was incapable of solving every problem and despaired when she couldn't save everyone, thus she started contracting with and sacrificing others and became obsessed with gaining knowledge to reach her goal of saving everyone. But eventually, due to her nature as a Witch or other means, she lost sight of her original goal and became obsessed solely with the gaining of knowledge.
  • Deal with the Devil: She offers one to Subaru in Arc 4. In exchange for Echidna's help and wisdom, Subaru has to help with her research by dying multiple times. In the main story, Subaru rejects, but in an alternate timeline he accepts and results in a world where Subaru is aStepford Smiler, Emilia is extremely dependent on him, Reinhard secretly hates him, and Subaru dies simply to sate Echidna's curiosity.
  • Don't You Dare Pity Me!: One of the reasons why she hates Emilia is the fact that the half-elf is nice to her, even though Echidna constantly insults her.
  • Duplicate Divergence: The Echidna that Subaru and Emilia met isn't quite the same Echidna Roswaal, Beatrice, and Ryuzu knew. It is unclear if she simply changed from centuries as living as a ghost and her worse traits got the better of her over time. The author has even stated that the Echidna in the Castle of Dreams and the Echidna from 400 years ago should be considered different people.
  • Evil All Along: In her early interactions with Subaru, Echidna shows herself as affable and helpful in an attempt to gain his trust and persuade him to make a contract with her. Since Echidna is the only person he can confide in about Return by Death and her ample knowledge can be useful for the problems he faces, Subaru nearly accepts her offer... until the other witches show up and warn Subaru that he should ask Echidna about what she wants in return for their contract. Echidna then confirms that all she wants for Subaru is using him to experiment with the infinite timelines that can be created with Return by Death with their contract having no purpose but to use each other with no concern of how much Subaru's mind can break from Echidna making him die countless times. Subaru finally understands Echidna is just a sociopathic witch who cares for nothing but knowledge and is incapable of feeling empathy for others.
  • Evil Wears Black: She wears a black dress and while she isn't exactly evil, she's still a manipulative witch who doesn't understand much about compassion and empathy.
  • Fixing the Game: The other Witches note that while Echidna is fine with all results, that doesn't mean she doesn't have a preference, and won't nudge things to better favor the result she wants.
  • For Science!: The main reason she is interested in Subaru's Return By Death is the ability to recreate circumstances that can normally happen once.
  • Graceful Loser: Despite not being successful in getting into a contract with Subaru, she still gives him advice to solve Arc 4.
  • Grand Theft Me: At the end of Arc 4, she takes over the body of the original Ryuzu by merging one of the souls (or Od as the term for them in this world) of Ryuzu's clones and using her as a medium to attach herself to the body. She gives her new body the name Omega based on the one Subaru made up.
  • Great Big Book of Everything: Has one called the Book of Wisdom (aka the original gospel), that can tell her anything that has occurred. But she dislikes using it since it sends the knowledge directly into her mind, skipping the learning process which she enjoys.
  • Hate at First Sight: Echidna claims to have hated Emilia from the moment she first saw her. It's implied that part of this hatred is due to Emilia's heavy resemblance to Satella, who Echidna also hates.
  • Immortality Seeker: When she was alive, Echidna performed experiments on the Ryuzu clones in order to gain immortality as a side project after the original had sacrificed herself for the Sanctuary's Barrier activation. Her research was continued by Roswaal who developed a way to swap bodies with his descendants.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: She prefers being alone because she's only interested in getting knowledge out of people. Ironically, she was the Witch who probably got along the best with normal humans, being the one who forged the most contracts and advised people who came to her.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She does try to manipulate Subaru and turn him into another of her guinea pigs in an "experiment" that would have broken his mind and spirit. However, she ultimately helped Subaru come to terms with his use of Return by Death along with Satella and the other Witches.
  • Lack of Empathy: For Echidna, people are just another element in her experiments, and it doesn't matter if the experiment brings happiness or pain to them, because as long as it gives new knowledge to her, it's a perfectly valid result.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Roswaal, her former disciple. He has spent the last 400 years repeatedly stealing the bodies of his own descendants to get a chance of reviving Echidna and avenge her death by killing the legendary dragon Volcanica.
  • Mad Scientist: She has this vibe, in spite of being a witch. Among other things, there is her For Science! mentality, her Lack of Empathy, and all the inhuman experiments she conducted in the past.
  • Manipulative Bitch: She uses the fact that Subaru can only talk about Return by Death in her dimension to make him want to confide in her and seek her help when he's forced to face too many obstacles at once. She also deliberately only tells Subaru what's convenient for her so she can persuade him to make a contract with her faster.
  • Metaphorically True: She's very fond of this. While she rarely outright lies, she tends to withhold information or bends the truth to suit her needs. Most notably it is uncertain how many of the actions of "Echidna" she explains are her own, or the actions of the Echidna entombed that Roswaal and Beatrice know. Since they were both "Echidna."
  • Motor Mouth: Another one of her bad habits. Once she starts talking she finds it really hard to stop and constantly goes off on tangents.
  • Mystical White Hair: She's a long-dead witch with very long white hair.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Once she gets excited she can get like this, though once she calms back down she does have the decency to get embarrassed about it.
  • Not So Different: Surprisingly enough, what little background that has been revealed about her implies she is quite similar to Subaru. Her book of the dead reveals that she was a lonely person who wanted to save everyone around her without sacrificing anyone. But in spite of all that she was able to do as a Witch, she still failed, despairing at her inability to turn back time. This may explain why she is so fond of him other than just her fascination with Return by Death.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: When Subaru first meets Echidna, she takes a persona of a Genius Ditz, but in actuality, she is a cruel and scheming chessmaster who seeks to use Subaru's gift to further her research.
  • One Steve Limit: Averted. There are at least three characters who use the name of Echidna.
  • Parental Neglect: She left the spirit who views her as a mother trapped somewhere for 400 years, only telling her she had to wait for an unspecified person to come. When Subaru demands to know why she did this, Echidna indifferently admits it was all an experiment to see how Beatrice would act and who she would choose to be "that person" since Echidna didn't really have anyone in mind for Beatrice to wait for. She doesn't care how much loneliness and sadness Beatrice went through because of her curiosity.
  • Pet the Dog:
    • At the end of the tea party with all the witches, Echidna takes away Subaru's right to complete her trials because, as she says, she doesn't want him to think she was the witch who doesn't have a good side.
    • While she felt no remorse in leaving her daughter Beatrice alone in a library for 400 years, Beatrice's remarks, as well as flashbacks, shows that Echidna was, overall, a positive mother figure. She scolded Beatrice for acting mean to Ryuzu and told her to be more tolerant of others.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her white hair goes all the way to the back of her knees.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She has existed as a spirit for 400 years, though she still looks 19.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: In Greek mythology, Echidna is a monster, half-woman, and half-snake, who lived alone in a cave.
  • Sarcasm Failure: She gets hit with this when talking to Subaru, due to him being one of the few people she cannot understand.
  • Seeker Archetype: Her main goal in life is to learn about everything. As a result, she is deeply interested in Subaru's Return by Death ability as it allows the user to learn of events and information from multiple different timelines.
  • Signature Headgear: She wears a distinctive black butterfly hairpin.
  • The Sociopath: Echidna is described as a black-hearted person who is unable to understand conventional morality and feelings. She is, however, pretty good at faking empathy for others. She also has a single-minded obsession with something that stimulates her, in this case, her quest for knowledge of everything. Even so, Echidna, unlike the stereotypical sociopath, is more of a Chaotic Neutral character than one driven by sadism or any other malicious intent.
  • Soul Jar: She has the souls of the five dead witches in her necklace.
  • Squishy Wizard: The author affirms Echidna is one of the most powerful magic users in the setting, only comparable to Roswaal, and is one of the few who can use all magic elements. Physically, however, she's so weak that just regular exercise would leave her exhausted and she can't move fast. This is hilariously showcased in the second season's Break Time specials, where she could barely keep up with a walking Emilia despite her feeble attempts to run just to catch up.
  • Stellar Name: Echidna refers to the 42355 Typhon I Echidna, a moon of the 42355 Typhon.
  • Stepford Smiler: Of the "Unstable" variety. Echidna is rarely seen without a smile on her face. However, her friendliness hides a complete lack of basic empathy, as she doesn't seem to understand some of the emotions she is emulating. The one time she drops her smile is when Subaru tells her point blank that she should get angry after he called her out on her Lack of Empathy: she promptly thanks him, before suddenly dropping both her smile and voice, telling him that she will remember to do that the next time they meet. She immediately resumes her usual behavior afterward, as if their exchange never happened.
  • Summon Bigger Fish: Her soul was saved by The Dragon for this purpose. The idea is that she and the souls of the other Witches would act as a deterrent against Satella. She notes that Sekhmet would have probably been a better choice for that purpose, but speculated Volcanica probably had a grudge because of that one time she beat them up to take a nap.
  • The Tease: When Echidna is offering her Deal with the Devil to Subaru, she, among other things, offers to let him use her body for comfort.
  • The Unfettered: She considers her life's purpose to understand everything and watch every outcome, no matter the cost.
  • Villainous Crush: She claims to be very fond of Subaru, and clearly expresses a desire for him to see her in a good light. Though after her manipulations are revealed, how much of this was genuine affection or just obsession with his Return by Death authority is made ambiguous. The author confirms she does legitimately like him. When asked to rate how her affection levels for Subaru from 1 to 10, the author answered that it was impossible to measure.
  • We Used to Be Friends: It is heavily implied that her extreme hatred towards Satella is because Satella was her closest friend among the Witches before she became the Witch of Envy.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: While she isn't as incapable of emotions as Subaru believes she is, she does legitimately have trouble understanding the emotion of love. And the question of why love always fades is one she is constantly trying to answer. Though the author Q&As state she is capable of understanding the concept of love intellectually.
  • When She Smiles: She gives a genuine smile towards Subaru that makes his heart flutter, and making him consider it to be a close call.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: A white-haired and black-hearted witch who only cares about gaining knowledge with no regard to who suffers for it.
  • Witch Species: It is later revealed by the author that she is actually the only Witch that was born a Witch.

    Typhon

Typhon

Voiced by:Misaki Kuno (Japanese), Kimberley Anne Campbell (English), Montserrat Aguilar (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/typhon_rezero.png
The Witch of Pride. One of the original Witches of Sin. She was slain by Satella.
  • Blush Sticker: She has permanently rosy cheeks.
  • Burn the Witch!: The water torture variant, taken to extreme. Typhon was drowned when Priestella deliberately flooded to do away with her.
  • Cheerful Child: Typhon is a little girl who is always happy.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Typhon went to visit Priestella, a city with magical water canals that could prevent the city from flooding. There was a trap mechanism to submerge the whole city to drown dangerous forces. Typhon was drowned, thus ending her killing streak.
  • Cute Witch: In appearance, Typhon is such a cute little girl that you wouldn't guess she's a Witch of Sin at first glance. As for her personality, however, she's certainly not cute in the way she dismembers those she considers guilty of something.
  • Does Not Like Shoes: She's barefoot.
  • Flowers of Femininity: Being the most childlike of the witches, the blue flowers on her headband and dress make her look even more adorable.
  • Killer Rabbit: When Subaru first meets her, he thinks Typhon is just a cute, harmless little girl, until she casually rips off his arm to see if he's a "bad person".
  • Knight Templar: Due to misunderstanding the lesson her father tried to impart on her, Typhon primarily judges how good or bad a person is based on how much sin they have rather than the nature or scale of it.
  • Magical Barefooter: She's a witch and doesn't wear any footwear.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: In Greek mythology, Typhon is a monstrous giant, the most dangerous of all monsters, and the father of monsters.
  • Stellar Name: Typhon refers to the 42355 Typhon, a scattered disc spatial object.
  • Third-Person Person: She refers to herself in the third person.
  • Token Mini-Moe: The youngest-looking member of the Witches of Sin, with the appearance of a very young girl.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has dark green hair.

    Minerva

Minerva

Voiced by:Mikako Komatsu (Japanese), Skyler Davenport (English), Valentina Souza (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/minerva_rezero.png
The Witch of Wrath. One of the original Witches of Sin. She was slain by Satella.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Punching Typhon shattered her arm at one point in Arc 4.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: She has prominent eyebrows.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: In life, Minerva traveled the world to heal people wherever she found people in need. Too bad the side effect of her Authority resulted in her causing as many catastrophes as she solved.
  • Cleavage Window: Her outfit has a transparent section in the chest area that exposes her cleavage.
  • Combat Medic: Her Authority allows her to heal people by punching them.
  • Dynamic Entry: She's introduced when she falls from the sky, throws some heart blasts from her punches, and makes a Ground-Shattering Landing.
  • Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: All things considered, Minerva is still a good-natured person who can't stand people getting injured and wants to heal as many as she can.
  • Heart Beat-Down: Her punches produce heart-shaped magical blasts that heal people.
  • Hot-Blooded: She's extremely passionate about healing injured people and goes into a rage when one of her fellow witches hurts Subaru.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's hotheaded, aggressive, and hard to talk to. Her favorite hobby also happens to be healing injured people and helping those in need.
  • Obliviously Evil: Minerva's hobby is healing people using her Authority. However, the Authority of Wrath uses up insane amounts of ambient mana, resulting in catastrophes in other places. As a result, she moves to heal the victims of said catastrophe resulting in another one. Thus she ends up killing as many people as she saved.
  • Prone to Tears: She rarely stops crying, especially if she sees someone injured. Instead of sadness, she says she's crying out of anger.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: She calls Subaru a coward viler than a witch for resolving to die as many times it takes to save everyone while not giving a thought about how he's making those who care about him worry as he keeps hurting himself to protect them. Subaru immediately rebukes her by pointing out that she and the rest of the witches put him in such a state to begin with.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: In Roman mythology, Minerva is the goddess of wisdom and sponsor of arts, trade, and strategy.
  • Reluctant Warrior: In the past, Minerva was part of an unending war that she did not want to join, but did so to end it.
  • Showgirl Skirt: She wears a minidress covered by a tunic that splits at the front to display her legs.
  • Signature Headgear: She wears a hairpin shaped like a pink and light blue heart.
  • Stellar Name: Minerva refers to 93 Minerva, a large trinary main-belt asteroid.
  • Super Strength: Despite the fact she can't kill a living thing even with a weapon due to her Authority, her fists are powerful enough to break the ground and she can easily pick up Subaru with one hand.
  • Symbol Motif Clothing: She wears an outfit with a heart motif.

    Daphne

Daphne

Voiced by:Nao Tōyama (Japanese), Michelle Marie (English), Azul Valadez (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/daphne_rezero.png
The Witch of Gluttony. One of the original Witches of Sin. She was slain by Satella.
  • Big Eater: Daphne's singular purpose in life is to feel full. As a result, she made the Mabeasts in order to serve as a food source.
  • Blindfolded Vision: Her eyes are covered with a black blindfold.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Daphne's way of thinking doesn't take into account any kind of human morality. The one thing she seems to believe in is the old rule of "you have to eat others to survive". So even though she created the Mabeasts as a food source for people in order to end world hunger, she doesn't mind if the Mabeasts end up eating people instead, since it's hypocritical for humans to try to eat other species without risking getting eaten themselves. When Subaru asks her how to defeat the Great Rabbit to save lives, she initially refuses to tell him, unfazed by the carnage her creatures leave behind. But when he sarcastically complains that she believes in "killing to eat" but not in "killing to survive", she agrees that he has a point and tells him what he wants to know.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Daphne is willing to eat anything, including human meat. Her backstory says that when she was trapped at a castle, she was so hungry that she ate the throne, the carpets, and her own vomit.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her hair is tied in two low pigtails.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Daphne created the Mabeast to serve as a food source to end world hunger that only ate mana and grew to large sizes. However, their size allowed them to become stronger than humans and target them for food. However, this is subverted from the point of view of Daphne herself, as she believes people who hunt for food should be aware that they can be hunted too.
  • Iron Maiden: Her entire body is chained into a black coffin named Centipede Coffin, a Mabeast that resembles an iron maiden, but with no spikes.
  • Lack of Empathy: She doesn't care that the Mabeasts she created have been spreading massive death and destruction for the last 400 years, and the Mabeasts themselves don't fare much better in her mind. After she comments that the Great Rabbit is always starving, Subaru asks if she doesn't feel bad about granting it this kind of life. A confused Daphne replies that her children feeling hunger doesn't make her hungry.
  • Maker of Monsters: While it is commonly believed that Satella was the one who made the Mabeasts, the original maker was Daphne. As a result, the Mabeast feel great animosity toward those who have the smell of Satella as she was the one who killed their master.
  • The Nicknamer: She likes to give nicknames to people. Some examples are Subarun to Subaru, Dna Dna to Echidna, Met Met to Sekhmet, Ner Ner to Minerva, Mila Mila to Carmilla, and Tyu Tyu to Typhon.
  • Power Limiter: She must keep her eyes covered because those who look into them will be overcome with such insane hunger that they'll try eating their own body parts.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: In Greek mythology, Daphne is known as a naiad—a type of female nymph associated with fountains, wells, springs, streams, brooks, and other bodies of freshwater.
  • Scary Teeth: She has shark-like teeth.
  • Spider Limbs: She's often confined to her Centipede Coffin, a large coffin-like mabeast with eight spider-like legs that will move anywhere Daphne wishes to go.
  • Stellar Name: Daphne refers to 41 Daphne, a large asteroid from the asteroid belt.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: In the Web Novel, Daphne is revealed to have gold eyes. Looking at them causes extreme hunger, so extreme that Subaru started eating his own arm.
  • Third-Person Person: She refers to herself in the third person.

    Carmilla

Carmilla

Voiced by:Manaka Iwami (Japanese), Lisa Reimold (English), María José Moreno (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/carmilla_rezero.png
The Witch of Lust. One of the original Witches of Sin. She was slain by Satella.
  • Burn the Witch!: She died when she was burned alive.
  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: She can make people see and hear her as what they want to see and hear at the time.
  • Girlish Pigtails: Her long hair is tied into a pair of low pigtails.
  • Hidden Buxom: According to a chart made by Tappei, Carmilla has a rather large bust that is bigger than Emilia's but smaller than Frederica's. Not that anyone can tell as her clothes do a good job of hiding her figure.
  • Imposter Forgot One Detail: When she appears to comfort Subaru with Rem's form, Subaru figures out she's a fake because the Rem he knows and loves is the person who would convince him to stand back up when he falls down. The real Rem would never tell him he should just rest and do nothing like Carmilla does.
  • Narcissist: Lampshaded by Echidna. Carmilla only cares for herself and holds deep grudges if you were to harm or trick her in any way regardless if she's in the wrong.
  • Prone to Tears: She always looks like she's on the verge of tears.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Her name refers to Camilla, the daughter of King Metabus and Casmilla in Roman mythology.
  • Shapeshifting Seducer: In her introduction, she tries to seduce Subaru using Rem's appearance. Carmilla says Echidna forced her to do this to keep Subaru's mind from breaking after he saw the possible scenarios following his deaths in other timelines.
  • Shrinking Violet: She's timid and has no self-confidence.
  • Speech Impediment: She stutters a lot in her speech.
  • Stellar Name: Carmilla refers to the 107 Camilla asteroid, one of the largest of the main belt asteroids.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has light pink hair.

    Sekhmet

Sekhmet

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sekhmet_3.png
The Witch of Sloth. One of the original Witches of Sin. She was slain by Satella.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: While she is the Witch of Sloth and acts like such, Echidna says that Sekhmet is strong enough to defeat the other Witches of Sin outside of Satella. When the Witches gather up together, she says that she is only there as a mediator to prevent the others from using force to get their way.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: In the past, Sekhmet managed to drive away Volcanica, a giant dragon, in order to take a nap. Unfortunately, she fell off the Great Waterfall in the process.
  • Cleavage Window: Her dress has an opening in the chest area that shows off her cleavage.
  • Lazy Bum: Apparently she's so lazy that even breathing is a bother to her.
  • Messy Hair: From the looks of it, she never combs her hair. Since she's the Witch of Sloth, that would make sense.
  • Odd Name Out: Sekhmet is the only one of the dead witches who doesn't have the name of a Classical Mythology figure. Instead, she's named after an Egyptian goddess.
  • Peek-a-Bangs: Her hair covers the left side of her face.
  • Rapunzel Hair: She has long wild, disheveled hair that reaches past her feet. Given how unbelievably lazy she is, cutting her hair must be too much of a bother to her.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: In Egyptian Mythology, Sekhmet is a warrior goddess as well as a goddess of healing.
  • Statuesque Stunner: She is stated to be the tallest of the Witches, and is very attractive despite her languid appearance.
  • Stellar Name: Sekhmet refers to 5381 Sekhmet Aten asteroid.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has magenta hair.

    Pandora

Pandora

Voiced by:Rie Kugimiya (Japanese), Deneen Melody (English), Meli G (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pandora_infobox_7.png
The Witch of Vainglory. She is a Witch who did not die during the Cataclysm 400 years before. She is described by Capella as an associate of the Witch's Cult.
  • Anonymous Benefactor: She supports the Witch's Cult through various means, such as providing powerful warriors like Theresia van Astrea and Kurgan as puppets. However, Pandora's relationship with the cult isn't quite clear because members are forbidden to speak of her despite knowing of her existence and she is addressed with high respect.
  • Beauty Is Bad: She's described as so beautiful that even God would hesitate to touch her. Also, if beauty could kill, Pandora would be that beauty.
  • Big Bad: Her influence in events of the past frequently hints she may be the real main antagonist of the story.
  • Death Is Cheap: No matter how many times you kill her, Pandora can undo her own death and will come out completely unharmed.
  • Dissonant Serenity: She smiles calmly even while casually altering reality or spreading death and destruction around her.
  • Does Not Like Shoes: She doesn't wear any footwear.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: After Emilia refused to open the seal because of her promise to Fortuna, Pandora saw nothing wrong in killing Fortuna so the person Emilia made a promise to is no more and is genuinely confused that Emilia became furious because of it.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: She's so beautiful that anyone would mistake her for an angel, but don't let her good looks fool you because she's the only witch that all can agree that is evil to the core.
  • Faux Affably Evil: At first glance, it is hard to think that Pandora is affiliated with the Witch's Cult, due to her graceful demeanor. But since she keeps acting like this, even while committing nefarious acts, it just makes her more unsettling.
  • Going Commando: She isn't wearing anything beneath her white cloth.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: She is behind several major incidents in the series, such as the death of Theresia during the ill-fated White Whale subjugation 15 years ago, the destruction of Garkla, a fortress city that once belonged to the Vollachia Empire, and the death of its greatest warrior, Kurgan, and initiated the destruction of the elves of Emilia's home. Within the series, she has barely taken part in present events, and her plans and motivations remain a mystery.
  • Hate Sink: While Re:Zero has a large number of villains and antagonists, Pandora is one of the most despicable, and rightly so. Even the other Witches, who all have their share of blood on their hands, are viewed in a far more sympathetic light. As the benefactor and possible founder and leader of the Witch's Cult, she can be held accountable for all the deaths and destruction caused by them. On a more personal level, she killed a weakened Theresia van Astrea, murdered Emilia's parents, made Petelgeuse kill Fortuna by using her illusions to confuse him, is responsible for Emilia freezing the entire Elior Forest and its inhabitants before warping her memories in such a way that Puck was forced to seal them away in order to protect Emilia's sanity, and turned a mourning Geuse into a lunatic that would spend the next 100 years slaughtering countless people out of a warped love for Satella.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: She has an ambiguous, important plan that requires both the Witch's Cult and Emilia to achieve.
  • High Priest: She seems to act as a shadow leader of sorts to the cult.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Pandora is described as one of the most beautiful women in the world to the point that her beauty could kill. The art style, however, doesn't make her look that especially pretty next to the other women in the cast.
  • Keigo: She always speaks in an extremely polite way.
  • Kick the Dog: The way she taunted Fortuna by using her illusions, even going as far as making Fortuna believe that she hit Emilia, her beloved niece could be considered as downright Mind Rape.
  • Lack of Empathy: What does Pandora do when little Emilia refuses to open the seal because of her promise to her adopted mom? Kill her mom in front of Emilia, of course. That way Emilia won't have to care about the promise anymore, right? Pandora doesn't seem to understand why Emilia got so mad that she killed her many times to avenge her aunt.
  • Light Is Not Good: She's a beautiful woman with long silver hair, white skin, and her body is covered by nothing but a white mantle that she wears like a dress. She's also been built up as one of the biggest and most evil villains in the series.
  • Magic Skirt: Even though she wears nothing but her white dress, none of her movements or the wind ever expose what's under her skirt.
  • Magical Barefooter: She's a witch and goes around barefoot.
  • Master of Illusion: She can create illusions to distract and confuse her enemies.
  • Occult Blue Eyes: She has dark blue eyes and has one of the most powerful Authorities among the witches.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Her only known facial expression is a serene smile.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Her long hair reaches down to her ankles.
  • Reality Warper: Her Authority allows her to manipulate natural and supernatural phenomena in her favor to a certain extent. This means she can instantly bury people, revert her own death, alter memories, or even simply warp people away without a trace. So far, she has used her Authority to revive herself multiple times, warped Regulus away and undoing all of the damages he caused, deceived Fortuna and Petelgeuse with illusions and altered Emilia's memories to forget the events involving her in Elior Forest.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Her name refers to the first woman in Greek mythology who unwittingly released evil into the world.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: She speaks in a soft and serene tone, and it is very rare for her to drop this. However, make no mistake she is undoubtedly one of the wickedest characters in the story.
  • Stellar Name: Pandora refers to the 55 Pandora asteroid.
  • Story-Breaker Power: While Pandora is outclassed by other characters such as Reinhard and Satella, her ability to warp reality is one of the most dangerous abilities in the story as it even allows her to revive herself.
  • Viler New Villain: Before Pandora appeared, all previous villains were either clearly insane, had cases of Blue-and-Orange Morality, were mostly self-absorbed jerks or at the very least had Pet the Dog moments. Pandora clearly doesn't fit any of these criteria.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: She has long platinum hair and is very sinister in nature.

    Hector

Hector

The Warlock of Melancholy and one of the setting's most mysterious characters. He is the only male member of the Witches of Sin.
  • Battle Aura: The anime gives him a purple aura that surrounds his entire body.
  • Creepy Shadowed Undereyes: He has bags under his eyes to complement his Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette look and brooding personality.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Centuries ago, he literally crushed Roswaal with his Gravity Master abilities, never giving him a chance to counterattack. Roswaal only survived because Echidna stepped in to stop Hector.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: He has almost black hair and extremely pale skin that makes him look sickly.
  • The Eeyore: As the one representing the sin of Melancholy, him being permanently gloomy is a given.
  • Evil Smells Bad: Bearers of the Witch Factors (including Hector) and their followers emitted a notable scent that could be detected by those who were familiar with it. Both Rem and Beatrice, who could detect the scent, noted that it smelled repugnant.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Has quite a deep voice when speaking courtesy of his voiceactors.
  • Gravity Master: Hector's Authority allows him to summon invisible gravitational fields that could crush living creatures and magic alike.
  • Lean and Mean: He is rather tall and thin, and is a powerful Warlock.
  • The One Guy: The only male member of the Witches of Sin.
  • Perpetual Frowner: His facial expression seems to be locked in a sulky frown.
  • Religious and Mythological Theme Naming: Hector refers to a Trojan prince and the greatest fighter of Troy in the Trojan War.
  • Sad Clown: Dresses like a jester despite being contrary to his personality.
  • Stellar Name: Hector refers 624 Hektor, the largest of Jupiter's trojans.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: He appeared in Sanctuary 400 years ago and was last seen engaging Roswaal and Echidna in battle. After that, he seemingly vanished from history and the world itself.

Witch Cult Members.png

The Witch Cult (魔女教) is an organization that allegedly worships the Witch of Envy. It was co-founded by Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti, alongside another unnamed individual.

History

The Witch Cult has existed for over 400 years since the times when the witches were alive and active. It is shrouded in secrecy and mystery thus little is known of the organizational structure and other specifics like their doctrine beyond rumours as a result. They are evil enough that knights are ordered to annihilate them immediately should they appear. Followers are elusive. Their means of hiding are unknown, allowing them to survive until the current time. Their purpose is rumoured to be the resurrection of the Witch of Envy, however, some Sin Archbishops have disputed that notion.

100 years ago, the Witch Cult consisted of a moderate side, led by Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti, and a radical side, led by Regulus Corneas. The two factions seemed to have been at odds with each other as they engaged in an all-out combat during the attack on the Elior Forest.

Information

Witch Cult Members 2.png

The Witch Cult is a secret organisation in Re:Zero world, shrouded in utmost secrecy and ambiguity. It has been existing for well over 400 years, originating from the times when the Witches were freely roaming around the world. They seemingly operate at random, appearing out of thin air and causing damage of catastrophic proportions. They're always seen wearing jet black clerical robes with triangular hoods which have two red cut-outs for the eyes and a large red symbol resembling an eye, located on their forehead. Each individual can also be seen wearing the Cult's coat of arms around their neck which takes the shape of twin gold swords crossing each other on a red background, surrounded by a gold circle. They rarely speak and show just the bare minimum of movements, effectively giving off a sense of distortion and abnormality; almost like a group of walking dolls. Furthermore, the Cultists following Sloth, were shown to obey every and all commands given to them by the madman and at times, even mimicking his behaviour, as could be seen when the entire group started banging their hands on solid stone, shattering their bones, just like Petelgeuse did, in one of Subaru's failed loops of the 3rd Arc. That being said, we know of some cases when regular members of the cult made their appearances as normal citizens or merchants and even interacted with Subaru and other members of the main cast.

Their numbers are unknown, just like their ultimate goal. They usually launch attacks in smaller groups, resorting to ambushes rather than outright announcing their attacks, which allows them to quickly dispatch several times larger and more skilled groups than theirs, with relative ease and minimum causalities; that being said, normal members of the Witch Cult are as expendable as the lowest ranking members of the Imperial Army. They often employ suicidal tactics, lunging themselves towards an enemy just so one would manage to avoid the incoming attacks and land a single killing blow. Furthermore, in face of captivity, regular cult members will commit suicide without fail, by using mana stones embedded in their bodies to trigger poisons, in order to keep information about the cult from leaking out. Petelgeuse's fingers are an exception as they have an explosion ritual embedded in their bodies instead, that only activates when they kill themselves in an effort to take out all nearby enemies with them when Petelgeuse needs to swap to a different body. As opposed to their leaders, the Sin Archbishops, regular members also don't appear to be as mentally damaged and unstable, in some cases even showing some prejudice and fear when being subjected to tantrums and outbursts of anger from the likes of Sloth and Greed. While we don't know if there are designated groups working under each of the Sin Archbishops (apart from Sloth), they do acknowledge them with the highest level of respect and are very often employed by them, even used as sacrificial pawns. Furthermore, in a Q&A, the author had confirmed the existence of Witch Cult members among Regulus Corneas' wives, stating that some of them were low-ranking members of the organisation.

As mentioned above, Petelgeuse was the only known Sin Archbishop who organised and led a larger force, totalling a couple hundred members. To keep their element of surprise, the Cultists were split into ten groups, each harbouring about twelve members with "a finger" or ringleader being put in charge of the group. These so-called fingers were physically stronger than normal Witch Cult members, being capable of taking on Rem solo and fighting on pretty much equal grounds. The fingers' main purpose, however, was to serve as spare bodies for Sloth, in case his main body was slain. Accordingly, all 10 fingers had to be Spirit Arts users and were given a small part of the Witch Factor of Sloth through a complex ritual which allowed Petelgeuse to continue using his Authority of Sloth when in their bodies. After the events of the 3rd arc, all surviving fingers were slaughtered and "opened up" by Sirius who was searching for Petelgeuse's spirit, effectively marking the end of Petelgeuse's faction.

The Cult is made up of followers at the bottom and a group of members at the top known as Sin Archbishops (大罪司教). The Sin Archbishops each govern over one of the seven sins other than Envy that the other six witches were said to represent. They are selected based on whether they are compatible with Witch Factors, and currently the representatives for Pride, Sloth and Greed are vacant. Also, each member owns a book known as the Witch Cult's Gospel (魔女教徒の福音), which shows the members a route to a future they desire through vague details (for example, Petelgeuse's Gospel only stated "In Mathers' domain, Trial on silver-haired half-witch.[1]" when instructing him how to act during the events of Arc 3). These books can only be read by the holder and appear to be incomprehensible to others, though it should be mentioned that in the web novel, Subaru was able to read it after his first meeting with the Witch of Greed (naturally, the scene was cut from the Light Novels, rendering it non-canon). Despite their recent appearances in the Kingdom of Lugnica, the Cult is actually active throughout the world with members spread out across various countries. According to Petelgeuse, during the events of Arc 3, Wrath was situated in another country, hence she was unable to provide him support.

Sin Archbishops

The Witch Cult is led by the Sin Archbishops who each represent one of the seven deadly sins with the exception of Envy itself. At the time of Subaru's arrival, only the sin of Pride remains unrepresented by an Archbishop. Interestingly, most of the Sin Archbishops didn't feel any fealty towards the Witch of Envy, instead possessing their own reasons for working with the Witch Cult. Following Petelgeuse's death, no Sin Archbishop exists that would prioritise the resurrection of the Witch over their personal goals. Each Sin Archbishop possesses a mysterious source of power known as a Witch Factor that corelates to their respective sin. The Witch Factor would eventually blossom into a powerful ability known as an Authority which allows its wielder to do various things depending on their individual ideals, goals and personalities. For the most part, the Sin Archbishops despise one another and rarely, if ever, worked together. Each Archbishop is allowed to command lesser members of the Cult, although most of them choose to operate without support instead relying on their Authorities in battle. The membership of the rank of Sin Archbishops includ Capella Emerada Lugunica representing Lust, Petelgeuse Romanée-Conti representing Sloth, Regulus Corneas representing Greed and Sirius representing Wrath. Gluttony was represented by three siblings who each took on a different aspect of Gluttony: Louis Arneb represented Satiation, Lye Batenkaitos represented Gourmet, and Roy Alphard represented Bizarre Eating. The sin of Pride was allegedly possessed by the Vollachia nobleman Stride Vollachia, although his Authority was never demonstrated and he perished around forty years ago at the hands of the Evil Dragon Valgren.

Current

Sin Archbishop of Wrath, Sirius

Main article: Sirius

The current Sin Archbishop of Wrath who is the most physically formidable of the Sin Archbishops. Her Authority of Wrath allows her to manipulate the emotions and sensations of others, meaning she can amplify a person's hostility level and distribute damage dealt across multiple people. Alongside Petelgeuse and Regulus, Sirius is one of the three Sin Archbishops to have inhuman longevity. Although her past is wrapped in mystery, Sirius claimed that her hometown was destroyed by Witch Hunters. She was obsessively infatuated with Petelgeuse, making her the only known Sin Archbishop to view another amicably (with the exception of the Gluttony siblings). She spent a large part of her time stalking Petelgeuse and trying to earn his affection, although he seemed to never reciprocate her feelings. Like Petelgeuse, Sirius appeared to be completely insane and barely held a grasp on reality. She viewed the Witch of Envy as a hated love rival rather than a deific figure.

During the attack on Priestella, Sirius met Natsuki Subaru after he had killed Petelgeuse and absorbed the Witch Factor of Sloth. As she knew of Petelgeuse's nature as a spirit, Sirius, who could smell the Witch Factor's scent on Subaru , presumed Subaru was her beloved's latest body and refused to accept his attempts to deny her claim. She was later captured by the Priscilla Barielle during the attack. During a subsequent interrogation with Subaru, Sirius finally understood that he was not Petelgeuse, although she still believed that Sloth lived within Subaru and was waiting to emerge.

Sin Archbishop of Lust, Capella Emerada Lugnica

Main article: Capella Emerada Lugnica

The current Sin Archbishop of Lust and the holder of the Lust Witch Factor. Her Authority of Lust allows her to transform herself into seemingly any creature or being, she has used this power to transform into a giant black dragon with golden horns, a small girl, a well endowed woman, an honest looking village girl, a multitude of field mice, and an innocent looking young girl with a lewd smile. She can also use this power defensively in order to regenerate by transforming the parts of her that are damaged into undamaged parts, she was able to heal during her battle with Al despite him "cutting off her head" and "crushing her heart". Furthermore her Authority can be used offensively by turning anyone she touches into what she desires. Capella has used this Ability to transform people into various creatures and at worst, nothing but unrecognizable lumps of flesh with no consciousness. Similarly to most of the other Archbishops her past is clouded with mystery and there is very little information about her. Although she has a popular standard appearance, with signature gold hair and red eyes, there is no confirmation that this is her actual form due to the nature of her Authority, meaning there is no hint towards her age, height or other key characteristics. Capella is shown to have the worst personality amongst the Archbishops and even responds to her fellow cultists with insults and degrading nicknames, Capella permanently speaks in an insulting tone to all of those around her and believes that all of the love in the world should be directed towards her and her alone.

Capella is also known as "Mother" and is the leader of an Assassin Organization, a organization that operates in all four countries. She appeared alongside her fellow Archbishops during the attack on Priestella, causing havoc in her famous Black Dragon form - until she ultimately duelled Al and fled after the Cult's defeat. However, she caused severe damage with the use of her Authority before leaving, causing many civilians stuck as flies, chunks of meat or even dragons.

Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Roy Alphard

Main article: Roy Alphard

One of the three Sin Archbishops who were jointly the most recent representatives of Gluttony, with Roy representing the bizarre eating aspect. Unlike his brother Lye, Roy doesn't care about what he eats, nor does he place any special emphasis on who he eats with like his sister Louis. As bizarre eating, his approach towards his meals is much more casual when compared to that of his older brother and younger sister, emphasizing quantity over quality as seen when he ate Julius despite admitting he had a bland taste. As described by his brother, he simply wants to eat without any thought or preparation put into it, for which he was repeatedly criticized by his siblings. He isn't as close to Louis as Lye is, but is nonetheless devoted and caring towards her.

In combat, Roy strives to exploit his opponents' weaknesses, unlike his brother who likes to give his opponents a chance to compete with him. He views combat as nothing more than a violent way of getting his meals.

During the events of Arc 5, he ate Julius' name, causing everyone but Subaru to forget about him. In Arc 6, however, he made a big mistake when he tried to devour Reid Astrea, only to have his body taken over. While he regained control of his body after Reid's soul shattered due to it being incompatible with Roy's body, the fatal wound rendered him unconscious and he was sealed away with the usage of Yin Magic.

Former

Sin Archbishop of Pride, Stride Vollachia

Main article: Stride Vollachia

The most recent Sin Archbishop of Pride, Stride Vollachia was a man, hailing from the Sacred Empire of Vollachia. Unlike all other Sin Archbishops, Stride never demonstrated his Authority, meaning what its capabilities are unknown. Instead, he tended to fight using a set of Ten Cursed Rings which he used to inflict curses on people. Stride was the son of the Emperor of the Vollachia Empire and was supposed to succeed him on the throne, however he was betrayed and poisoned by his own father. He survived the asassination and eventually joined the Witch Cult. Befitting his identity as the Archbishop of Pride, Stride held excessive pride in himself and always looked down on others. Like most Archbishops, he didn't care about the Witch of Envy, only joining the cult to further his own goals.

Four decades before Natsuki Subaru was transported to the Kingdom of Lugunica, Stride led several campaigns in the heart of the Dragon Kingdom of Lugnica, wanting to destroy its covenant with the Divine Dragon and topple the whole country. During these attacks, Stride found an archenemy in the Sword Demon Wilhelm van Astrea, a nigh-unparalleled swordsman and the strongest warrior of the Kingdom. Eventually, Stride summoned the Black Dragon Valgren in the Lugunican city Picouttate, hoping the dreadful beast would decimate the entire kingdom. However, Valgren ironically devoured Stride and was defeated by the Divine Dragon Volcanica shortly there after. Since his death, the seat of the Sin Archbishop of Pride has been vacant for many years now. The status of the Witch Factor of Pride that presumably resided within Stride remains unknown.

Sin Archbishop of Sloth, Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti

Main article: Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti

The most recent Sin Archishop of Sloth, one of the founders of the Witch Cult, and the Leader of the Moderate Faction. As a co-founder of the Witch Cult, Petelgeuse spent four centuries acting as one of its highest ranking members, working tirelessly to fulfill the goals of the Cult. Dubbed as "Geuse" by his friends and people dear to him, Petelgeuse was a kind-hearted spirit, well respected by everyone save for the other Sin Archbishops. It was stated that he was even acquainted with the Witch of Greed and acted as Beatrice's teacher when Echidna was too busy.

His contributions to the Cult led to him being given the title of an Archbishop, though not entrusted with a Sin as he was incompatible with the one he was intrusted with by Flugel–the Witch Factor of Sloth. Roughly a century before the start of the main story, Petelgeuse carried out different tasks relating to the elves located in the Elior Forest–something that was very dear to him, as the Guardian of the Seal he was regularly sent to monitor, was someone he was deeply familiar with and cherished above anyone else. Not long after, however, the forest was suddenly besieged by another two Witch Cult members–Greed and Vainglory, the former leading the Radical Faction of the Cult and the latter leading one of the Three Great Demon Beasts, Kurohebi. As push came to shove, Petelgeuse was forced to forcefully take in the Witch Factor of Sloth, gaining the Authority of Sloth in the process, which allowed him to stall the intruders, though to not much avail as he was overpowered relatively quickly. In the following events of the fight, the Witch of Vainglory used her Authority of Vainglory to influence Petelgeuse into slaughtering Fortuna, the very woman he loved. The unbearable pain caused by his actions caused Petelgeuse's mind to completely shatter, leaving him in a permanent state of madness.

In the following century, Petelgeuse had accepted the seat of Sloth, and joined the Radical Faction of the Cult. He became notorious for his cruelty, frequently slaughtering entire towns and villages, acting strictly according to his Gospel's write. He was finally countered and defeated by the Sloth Subjugation Force consisting of Natsuki Subaru, Sword Demon Wilhelm van Astrea, Royal Guards Julius Juukulius and Ferris Argyle and the Fangs of Iron. After Julius destroyed his body, Subaru later destroyed the spirit as well, marking the end of Sloth. The Witch Factor of Sloth was inherited by Natsuki Subaru.

His remains were later collected by Wrath, who cremated them in an unknown location.

Sin Archbishop of Greed, Regulus Corneas

Main article: Regulus Corneas

The most recent Sin Archbishop of Greed who was considered the most powerful known Archbishop ever. His Authority of Greed, which he gained after absorbing the Witch Factor of Greed from a box similar to Petelgeuse's, allowed him to stop time in and around his body, making him utterly invincible against any kind of physical attack regardless of its raw strength. Because his body was in a sort of permanent temporal stasis, Regulus never aged and lived over a hundred years.

Regulus was a man who cared little for people around him and firmly believed that he was in the right no matter what he did. He rarely tolerated people acting in contradiction to his twisted will, often murdering or mutilating innocent people as soon as they dissatisfied him in the slightest. Despite his egotistical attitude, Regulus followed the commands of the Gospel unquestionably. He also showed respect towards Pandora and followed her orders if they didn't contradict his own will too much. Of the Sin Archbishops, Regulus was the most infamous alongside Sloth for the sheer magnitude of the few atrocities he committed. Among his attacks were the incursion into the elven village of Elior Forest that led to the freezing of the entire area and the desolation of the Vollachian Fortress City of Garkla that resulted in the deaths of thousands of soldiers and the Vollachian War God Kurgan. It was Regulus' actions in Garkla that single-handedly taught the world to fear the Witch Cult.

During the attack on Elior Forest, Regulus acted as the Leader of a Radical Faction that existed within the Witch Cult. He lead the Cult and the Witch of Vainglory to the forest, despite making a mutual agreement with Petelgeuse, that the latter will be the only one to have access to the elven village and the seal the were guarding. Having made short work of Petelgeuse, Regulus–after the situations gravely scalated due to things not going the way he would have liked–turned his back to the Witch, killing her. However, due to her Authority, she was able to erase the time of her death and erase his existence from the forest.

Roughly a month after Subaru's arrival, Regulus mad his appearance at the Leafaus Highway, intercepting the dragon carriage convoy transporting the wounded, Crusch Karsten and Rem. After decimating a good portion of the convoy and crippling Crusch by cutting her arm off, Regulus–now accompanied by the fellow Sin Archbishop of Gluttony–introduced himself and in the following short battle, helped defeat Rem.

Regulus was finally defeated a bit over a year following his initial debut in the story, during the events of Arc 5. After arriving in the Water Gate City of Priestella causing havoc in the city streets and kidnapping Emilia, Regulus was confronted by the Greed Subjugation Force consisting of Natsuki Subaru and Reinhard van Astrea. After a tough and arduous battle, the team managed to decipher his Authority and give Reinhard a chance to deliver the finishing blow. By lunging him high above the city and batting him down into the streets, Regulus–whose invincibility now had a five second timer–was utterly shredded by the sheer speed and force of his body digging a hole underground. After his hole was flooded by a nearby water canal, Regulus drowned deep underneath the city streets. The Witch Factor of Greed was inherited by Natsuki Subaru.

Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos

Main article: Lye Batenkaitos

One of the three Sin Archbishops who were jointly the most recent representatives of Gluttony, with Lye representing the gourmet aspect. Like his little sister Louis, Lye was addicted to the consumption of human names and memories and cared little about the people his Authority hurt. His Authority of Gluttony functioned identically to his sister's, and although he wasn't incredibly powerful, Batenkaitos made up for his shortcomings with his versatile fighting style and unpredictable arsenal. Until his swan song, Lye was hesitant to use the aspect of his Authority that allowed him to transform into his victims, as he believed doing so harmed his individuality. With his Authority, Gluttony could control one of the Three Great Demon Beasts known as the Hakugei and occasionally used it in his schemes. He was fond enough of the Whale to consider it a pet. Out of the three Sin Archbishops, Lye was the one who cared the most for his siblings. Although not too fond of Roy, he cared deeply for his younger sister Louis whom he genuinely sought to protect from harm.

Although his exact age and the amount of time he spent as a Sin Archbishop are unknown, Lye had the appearance and immature attitude of a youth in his mid teens. After devouring the name and memories of Rem, Lye garnered an obsession with the man she loved, Natsuki Subaru, hoping to one day devour his name and memories as well. Subaru, on the other hand, saw Batenkaitos as a mortal foe, due to his actions against Rem. However, Batenkaitos was never able to experience the feast he sought. During an incursion into the Pleiades Watchtower, Lye was confronted by Rem's elder twin sister Ram who proceeded to face him in a desperate and brutal battle. Eventually, Lye was beheaded by Ram, and the names and memories of his victims slowly began to return overtime.

Sin Archbishop of Gluttony, Louis Arneb

Main article: Louis Arneb

One of the three Sin Archbishops who were jointly the most recent representatives of Gluttony, with Louis representing the satiation aspect. She is a spiritual being, born without a body and trapped inside the Corridor of Memories since birth. Like her big brother Lye, Louis was addicted to the consumption of human names and memories and cared little about the people her Authority hurt. Her Authority of Gluttony functioned identically to her brothers Lye's and Roy's. Louis doesn't care much about what she eats, putting more emphasis on who she eats with. Similar to the Great Rabbit, Louis can split and create a copy of herself whenever she separates her Witch Factor of Gluttony into multiple pieces, often using this ability to keep her original self within the Corridor of Memories while her copy possesses the body of someone else.

Being the youngest sibling, Louis initially gives off the impression of being respectful and loving towards her brothers, but later reveals that she found them idiotic for blindly eating lives for her just because she was unable to exit the Corridor of Memories. Louis believes that life is unfair and is like a conveyor belt, without having the ability to choose the family, environment and future to be born into. Advocating her actions and beliefs as a way to search for happiness, she mentions that she is making an effort to find the life that will satisfy her and let her live with her head held high, and currently believes that Subaru's life will provide her that fulfillment, as he is able to return by death, which will give her the ability to undo any mistakes she may make in future.

Learning of Return by Death, she ate Subaru's memories and latched onto him to gain the ability for herself. However, Subaru ultimately managed to defeat her and left her for dead, though she is later revealed to have survived but now has amnesia herself. After experiencing Return By Death, the Louis that had entered Subaru's soul as a Witch Factor became traumatized and got into a fight with the Louis within the Corridor of Memories, who retained her original personality. The end result of this confrontation was that Louis became mind-broken, regressing into an infant-like state. She was transported along with Rem and Subaru to Vollachia and is currently in an unknown location alongside Rem.

Trivia

  • Louis described the Witch Cult as "a gathering of people loathed by the world" and the Sin Archbishops as "a gathering of people loathed by the world who are called differently, but they're the same as the Witch.
  • Louis also pointed out that the nature of the Witch of Envy is worse than that of the Sin Archbishops so they dislike being lumped together with her. In every other way however, the Sin Archbishops are the same as the Witch. The "good-for-nothings" compatible with the Witch Factors are just called differently due to different eras and positions.
  • Out of all the Sin Archbishops, Regulus is by far the strongest in all out combat and possesses the most powerful Authority while Sirius is noted to have the highest physical strength.
  • Regulus, Sirius and Petelgeuse are among the oldest Sin Archbishops; two of them being confirmed to have been occupying their positions for at least a century, with Regulus governing over Greed for more than a century.
  • According to the author's very own words, the Sin Archbishops were created to be the biggest and the most irredeemable scums in the series.
  • According to Petelgeuse, the Sin Archbishops hold some kind of meetings in Church.
  • The Sin Archbishops themselves are not very fond of killing for various reasons, hence they'll avoid doing it, if given the chance to.
  • Pandora and the Sin Archbishops, with the exception of Stride Vollachia , all shared their names with a real life celestial body. Interestingly, Stride was also the only Witch Factor user to not display use of his Authority. These facts coupled together may imply that Stride was not actually the bearer of the Pride Witch Factor.
  • The star names of the Gluttony siblings were each linked to the Three Great Demon beast created by the Witch of Gluttony Daphne four hundred years ago. Louis (hare) represented the Great Rabbit, Lye (sea monster) represented the White Whale, and Roy (hydra) represented the Black Serpent.
  • Tappei once thought of writing an Interlude about the Sin Archbishops having an emergency meeting after Petelgeuse's death, but after realising it would just be Sirius uncontrollably crying and other Sin Archbishops scornfully laughing at her, he decided not to write it.
  • Wrath and Lust paired together could form the worst possible combo, according to the author.
