I'm so excited to FINALLY show you the Pottery Barn inspired storage bed we made for the upstairs bedroom at the mountain cottage. I've said before that one of our main goals at our small mountain house is to increase storage in every room. Storage is paramount when choosing furniture, as well.

The bed we would choose for the bedrooms was no different.

It HAD to have storage.
If you're like me, you can never have enough storage!

The Pottery Barn Stratton bed is a perfect bed to be inspired by. It has storage and baskets and is just the right size.

It's a great bed, if you have $1,499 to spend on a bed...but we didn't and I'm sure you don't either.

So, we searched around on Pinterest for a similar storage bed and we found one with a cut sheet and instructions, which you can find HERE.

Mr. DIY went to the hardware store to get some plywood and started working.

He used his Kreg Tools Rip Cut and his circular saw to make the first cuts.

Still  looks like a bookcase at this point.

Looks a little more finished now.

At this point, Mr. DIY handed the bed off to me so I could fill all the holes,  sand, prime, sand again and paint it.

After I had primed the bed, HomeRight sent me a Finish Max Fine Finish Sprayer to review. I couldn't wait to get started.

Finish Max Spayer

I had already put a couple of coats of primer on the wood when they sent me the sprayer, otherwise I would have used the Finish Max to apply it.

We set up to paint the 3 pieces at home and I was able to get one piece finished. The Finish Max sprayer was pretty easy to use and had easy directions. The most difficult part was thinning the paint (which really wasn't difficult at all). The rest was a breeze. Adjust the nozzle to spray vertically or horizontally and pull the trigger. We were pleasantly surprised that the Finish Max paint sprayer didn't vibrate or make a horrible noise like our other paint sprayer.
It's an easy sprayer to use on projects and will save you time on a big project.

My only problem in using the paint sprayer was that it kept raining of an on every weekend we were home and I only finished one of the 3 pieces.

So, we took all the pieces up to the mountain cottage and I finished a second piece of the bed. Then, it rained; every weekend we were there. for a month.

I didn't have any space inside to paint as the whole house was a construction zone and we don't have a garage at the mountain cottage.

Because the paint is thin,  thinner coats of paint is applied and each coat dries quickly. Thinner coats of  paint requires multiple coats. If you have a whole day with no rain, you could get a lot of painting finished in no time. We had less than half a day at a time and then we'd get our afternoon Summer showers. Can't complain about the smooth finish, though.

The weather finally cooperated and the bed was painted. I love that the paint is really smooth and no roller marks. Cleaning the paint sprayer when I was finished wasn't difficult, especially with the tools they give you.

We were so happy to get the bed upstairs and into the bedroom.

Mr. DIY covered the center part with a few strips of wood and I applied a couple of coats of water based poly on each of the horizontal surfaces of the boxes, so things wouldn't stick to the latex paint.

Look at all that storage!

Anyone have Pottery Barn Stratton bed with baskets?

I have the bed with the drawers in our lake house. I actually was seeking a bed with no headboard since it backs up to a bay window so I made the window our headboard (it is built in storage).

It's a very well built product, NOT something you can knock off for 100 bucks. No way. It weighs a ton (I have to have help when moving it and it's still hard with a couple of guys) but it does come apart if you actually have to move it (ie you're moving your home). We slide it out once a year to access the cabinet headboard which is our christmas storage area.

We have one of those costco foam mattresses on it and it doesn't move much. Really the only time it slides is if I get behind the bed and shove the mattress off with some force. You're not going to find it sliding around all over the place at all.

I didn't do the baskets because we had two cats, a dog and a 4 year old...all of whom would see the baskets as a place to deposit stuff, toys, hair, hairballs etc. The drawers fit snugly into the frame so you have no issues there. If I didn't have animals I would have purchased the baskets instead.

We love this bed. The storage is fabulous. DH and I each use one side drawer as a hamper, then the others are our bedding storage so no need for a linen closet in the bedroom (the drawers are huge as would be the baskets).

It's worth every penny, and no, we hit this with out toes no more often than we did out old "normal" bed. :o) It was hell to ship it to ALaska (PB does not ship there so the shipping costs were about half the bed costs) and I'd pay it again tomorrow. The style is perfect because it works with antiques as well as new furniture. The quality is top notch. We love the bed and I'd recommend it to anyone :)

Ohhhh I forgot to add...the top of the bed frame is actually a little larger than the mattress so if it jiggles around a bit I suppose I wouldn't notice it because the mattress is never hanging over the edge. I like this because when you make the bed with a comforter everything hangs just to the bed frame, leaving the drawers exposed with easy access (you're not always tucking a comforter out of the way when you use the drawers).

I don't seem to have a picture of the bed aside from this:

As to the lack of a headboard...I believe they offer one now, but most people buy this because they don't want a headboard :) as in our case.

I looked at lots and lots and lots of platform beds and they were all horribly styled. We purchased another one from a high end designer store and paid a lot more, and got a lot less quality. I like this bed :) You will too.

Storage Bed for a Small Space

When deciding on a bed for the upstairs bedroom of her small mountain cottage home, Pam of DIY Design Fanatic knew storage was a must.

The Pottery Barn Stratton Bed offered everything Pam needed – plenty of storage and stylish baskets to boot. However, it was certainly breaking the bank at $1,499.

Thankfully, Ana White came to the rescue with the plans, simplifying the DIY process for Pam and her hubs, so they could simply buy their materials and get to building and painting.

I love how this design utilizes that often wasted under-the-bed space and allows for open or hidden storage depending on your needs.

It might look like a lot of construction because of it’s size, but it’s not too bad.

Pam takes you through how she and her hubs basically made three boxes and then tied them together.

She uses a nifty paint sprayer to get a professional looking, nice and even coat of paint.

It really turned out great. This project is a no-brainer. Who wouldn’t want under-bed storage in a style that can fit almost any decor?

My only suggestion is to watch your toes. If you’re used to a standard metal bed frame, then you’re probably used to the foot space it provides directly beneath the box spring and frame edge.

If there was some way to elevate this storage bed structure all the way around, then you wouldn’t have to worry about it!

The original inspiration came from the Stratton Storage Bed with Baskets from Pottery Barn.

The baskets would add to your cost, but they sure can make a difference. Just wait until you find some on sale.
