Parents-to-be left in the lurch as Babies R Us closes, rivals look to lure baby registry customers

The closure of Toys R Us and Babies R Us has sent customers of the stores' baby gift registries into a panic.

Some customers have reported unfulfilled orders, while others have been forced to transfer entire registries to competing services. Those rivals have taken notice.

Natalie Gordon, founder of registry website Babylist, estimates that around 100,000 active Babies R Us registries may be affected. Babylist, which allows users to add gifts from any online retailer, published a guide to help customers transfer their wish lists.

"We have many registrants with Babies R Us products," Gordon told CNBC. The company plans to help customers by actively suggesting alternate retailers for products sold by Babies R Us.

Bed Bath & Beyond's Buybuy Baby published a tagline on its website in response to the Babies R Us closure: "We're here to stay. Shop with confidence!" The company is helping parents to recreate their Babies R Us registries.

"We understand these parents already spent time creating their registries, so we set up these easy steps to make the transition as seamless as possible," said Meka Millstone-Shroff, President of Buybuy BABY.

Babies R Us registries remain operational for now, and the company declined to say how long they will be supported.

The store was the third most popular destination for baby registries after Amazon and Target, according to a survey by product review website WeeSpring. Most parents list with two or more registries, the survey found.

A major draw of Babies R Us is its Endless Earnings program, which offers up to 10 percent back on baby registry purchases. But such rewards begin 12 weeks after the child's due date, meaning that many parents may not receive rewards earned in recent months.

Customers holding gift cards will have until April 20 to spend them, according to the company.

Online sales of baby products is a $7.5 billion industry, according to IBISWorld. Amazon leads the market with 27.5 percent share, followed by Target at 5.8 percent.

Baby registries present a strategically important asset to capture this spending. "Companies that are able to provide a seamless registry experience either online or through a mobile app are likely to attract more customers," said Claire O'Connor, an analyst at IBISWorld.

Babylist estimates that registry sales will total around $2 billion in 2018.

The Toys R Us liquidation has already hit snags. Final sales were scheduled to begin Thursday. But upon arrival, customers found signs posted on storefronts that the liquidation sales had been delayed, Business Insider reported. The sales are now expected to begin Friday.

In another surprise turn, Toy co. CEO Isaac Larian launched a last-ditch effort to save Toys R Us, promising $200 million from investors and stating a goal of crowdfunding the rest.

Have a Babies R Us baby registry? Where you can register instead

Many parents were drawn to Babies R Us because of the potentially lucrative endless earnings rewards program that the Toys R Us-owned stores offered.

The plan allowed parents-to-be to earn 5% cash back on the first $300 of purchases made by you or others through your baby registry and then 10% on  everything over $300.

Babies R Us in Henrietta, NY will be closing its doors on March 31, 2018.

The perk helped the chain to be named the baby registry with the best bang for the buck by consumer website Best Reviews, which called it "the best deal for those on a budget."

But now that Toys R Us has decided to liquidate and close all its stores including Babies R Us, many parents-to-be counting on these rewards are left in the lurch. Many of them are steamed.

The cash-back rewards come in the form of a gift card that gets sent to parents about 12 weeks after the baby’s due date.

But the company has said it will no longer accept gift cards after mid-April and many  will not receive their gift cards before that date, making their rewards they have been racking up worthless.

What to do?

"Unfortunately, Toys R Us and Babies R Us are in no hurry to assist their customers," consumer analyst Julie Ramhold said.

"The company announced that as of April 19, it won't accept gift cards or other rewards anymore," she said. "Essentially, the only advice Toys R Us is offering is to take your registry elsewhere, and to do it sooner rather than later."

Some of the other baby registry programs like Buybuy Baby and Babylist are offering extra perks for Babies R Us customers.

Here are some of the the main baby registry programs and what they offer:

Babylist CEO Natalie Gordon says that the company has seen a tenfold increase in the number of Babies R Us registry transfer requests since the Toys R Us closing announcement.

The baby registry website is offering a $10 credit to any customer who transfers their Babies R Us registry to Babylist and assists parents in finding matching products on their original registry from other retailers.

The web site allows parents to register for baby products from any retailer all in one place. It works like Pinterest. The site also lets you create cash funds where friends and family can contribute money to a college or diaper fund or offer help like babysitting or cooking a meal.

The company also offers a one-time 10% discount up to a maximum of $500 on items sold by and free shipping on orders over $25 shipped by Babylist.

Return policy: Free returns on items sold on the Babylist site within 90 days of the sale date. Products from other stores are bound by that retailer's return policy.

Buybuy Baby

The buybuy Baby website touts: We’re here to stay. Shop with confidence.

The chain, which is owned by Bed Bath & Beyond, is offering to assist Babies R Us customers to transfer and recreate their baby registries.

They will also throw in a free Wubbanub pacifer as part of the transfer.

The registry offers a 15% completion discount, a shipping rewards program and price-match promise.

And those ever-popular Bed Bath & Beyond coupons can be used at buybuy Baby.

Return policy: Free returns of products in new condition and in original packaging with receipt for 365 days.

The largest online retailer's baby registry program offers such perks as discounts and free shipping for orders over $25.

Customers receive a 10% completion discount for remaining items on the registry and it rises to 15% if you are an Amazon Prime member.

You can also get up to 20% off diapers, baby food and other items when you set up five subscriptions per month through Subscribe & Save.

Return policy: Free 90-day returns on most items.

Target's baby registry program allows parents, friends and family to buy online or in one of its more than 1,800 stores.

The plan offers in-store order pickup, free 2-day shipping for orders of at least $35 and a 15% completion discount.

The program also allows you to add items to your registry from other websites besides Target.

Return policy: Up to one year after the due date to return most items.

The retailing giant also offers a baby registry that allows customers to buy online or in its stores.

Parents have access to the wide range of products the retailer offers but does not allow you to add products from other stores.

Free two-day shipping is available for orders of $35 or more.

Return policy: Free returns for up to 90 days after the purchase.
