Main Story according to the level you have in FFXIV

Main Story Quests begin after you choose the great city where you start the Final Fantasy XIV journey. Regardless of which city or class you choose, the paths share fate. The First Main Scenario Quest is always the same, ‘Close to home.’ The only thing that changes is the Quest Giver. The Quest Givers are the properties of the different Adventure Guilds of the cities. The first NPC that you find in the game will indicate where to look for this Quest Giver.

The first 23 MSQs also depend on what class and city-states you choose. The stories differ in this first part of the game. Remember, the three options you have are the nation of Ul dah, in the desert of Thanalan, the city-state of Limsa Lominsa, in the Southern Coast of the island Vylbrand and the land of Gridania, located in the center of the Aldenard Continent, in the Black Shroud.

The MSQ in Final Fantasy XIV is divided into eight categories. Each of these categories corresponds with different levels, that is to say, from a certain level to another level. As you might suppose, the first category begins in level 1 and goes forward until level 50, which is when the starter pack of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn ends. Basically, the Main Scenario Quest is divide into the following categories:

  • Seventh Umbral Era Quests. These quests correspond to the base game A Realm Reborn and range from level 1 to level 50.
  • Seventh Astral Era Quest. Every quest in this era corresponds to the quests that continue the story of A Realm Reborn, Patches 2.1 and 2.5.
  • Heavensward Main Story Quests. These quests continue with the quest line left in ARR. These quests correspond from level 50 to level 60 and were released with the expansion Heavensward
  • Dragonsong War Quests. Level 60 quests that continue the story of Heavensward. These quests correspond to patch 3.1 y 3.5.
  • Stormblood Main Story Quests. These quests correspond to levels 60 and 70 with patch 4.0 and the expansion of Heavensward.
  • The Legend Returns Quests. The quests in this expansion correspond to the 70 level quests until 78 79 that continues the story of Stormblood.
  • Shadowbringers Main Story Quests. Level 70 - 80 quests that continue the storyline of Stormblood with patches 4.1, 4.56.
  • Post-Shadowbringers Main Story Quest. Level 80 Main Scenario Quests that continue the story of Shadowbringers in Patches 5.1 and 5.3

Seventh Umbral Era Quests

Main Scenario Quests 52 53 70 71

As we mentioned in the introduction of this article, the initial 23 quests of the Main Scenario Quests depend on the class you are using and you choose when you start ARR. As you should know, if you choose to be a Pugilist, a Gladiator, or a Thaumaturge, you will start the game in Ul’dah. Your first quest will be ‘Close to Home,’ and the Quest Giver is Momodi, the Quicksand Proprietress. On the other hand, if you choose to be an Archer, a Lancer, or a Conjurer, you will start your travel in Gridania. Your primary quest will be the same, but in this case, the Quest Giver is Mother Miounne, the Carline CanopyProprietress. Finally, if you choose to start the game as an Arcanist or Marauder, you will need to talk with a man in the Drowning Wench, Baderon, the Proprietor. In three cases, completing this mission unlocks the ability ‘Return.’ With the progression in the MSQ, you will have access to new abilities.

Another important quest similar in the three cases is a level 15 quest, which unlocks the Airships. At this point in the game, you will be able to leave your initial destination and start to travel for all the continent. Now is when the real struggle begins.

MSQ after leaving the Great City

The name of the quest in the case of Ul’dah is ‘The Ul'dahn Envoy,’ and the Quest Giver is Raubahn, the General of The Immortal Flames. In the case of Limsa Lominsa is ‘The Lominsan Envoy’ and the Quest Giver is the Admiral Merlwyb of the Maelstrom. For Gridania, the quest is ‘The Gridanian Envoy,’and the Quest Giver is Kan-E-Senna, the Elder Seedseer.

All classes have different quests until this point, that is to say, until level 15. From now, the path is the same regardless of the class or job. Regarding the mechanic, you will have to talk with a person, who will ask you to speak to another person, who will ask you to talk to another person, and so on until the quests are completed.

The quests that begin with a single path are ‘The Call of the Sea’ and ‘It's Probably Pirates.’ This last one is the quest that unlocks the first Dungeon in the game, Sastasha Seagrot. Later we are going to come back with the Dungeons.

Another important quest in Seventh Umbral Era Quests is the level 17 quest ‘The Scions of the Seventh Dawn.’ This mission unlocks Retainers but also introduces the order with the same name located in the Waking Sands.

At this point, a fundamental quest to travel through Eorzea is ‘My Little Chocobo.

It is not an MSQ. It is an optional quest, but a really important one. The only requirement to access this quest is to complete the previous quest, ‘The Company You Keep.’

Next, you have a level 2 0 Quest called ‘Lord of the Inferno,’ in which you have to face Primal Emperor Ifrit. In a later section, we’ll make a list dedicated to the Primal’s Quest.

Then, at level 20, you have the quest that asks you to join a Grand Company. The quest is ‘The Company You Keep,’ but it is different depending on the GC you choose to join.

Also, at level 20, you will find the quest Sylph-management, which unlocks the Job Quests.

From now on, you will find some quests that increase Mount Speed and others that complete certain Quests Achievements, so you will be rewarded somehow.

The level cap in this part of the Main Scenario Quests is 50. And you must remember that this introductory part are the quests that come by default in A Realm Reborn. For the next quests, you have to acquire the expansions.

Final Fantasy XIV Patch 5.3 Deleted The Best Quest In ARR

By Erin Truong

ShareTweetEmail

Final Fantasy XIV's Patch 5.3 streamlined A Realm Reborn’s main story scenario, cutting/altering many quests, unfortunately including one of the best.

Final Fantasy XIV’s long-awaited Patch 5.3 brought the Shadowbringers’ storyline to a conclusion, as well as introducing a number of quality-of-life changes. One of the biggest alterations is an overhaul of A Realm Reborn, FFXIV’s base game.

Patch 5.3 streamlined A Realm Reborn’s main story scenario, cutting or altering many quests that developers decided were too unnecessary or too frustrating. This is amazing news, because the original A Realm Rebornslogged.

Related: Everything You Need To Know About FFXIV's Youkai Watch Crossover

But with sweeping changes like this, it’s inevitable that a few babies get thrown out with the bathwater. The new A Realm Reborn has scrapped one of the few quests to give players a good look at the dynamics between the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, an organization that FFXIV’s core characters—including you, the player—are members of.

Twitter user @aetherflows captured the best moments of the now-obsolete quest chain, which began with “Scattered Scions” and took place during the A Realm Reborn patches, when the Scions are trying to track down the Sylph's primal Ramuh. The Scions get separated in the labyrinthian Sylphlands and you, the player, have to track them down. Except… they’re not acting like themselves. Even a player whose eyes glazed over during any cutscene or dialogue segment involving the Scions can recognize that something’s not quite right here.

That’s because each Scion is actually a Sylph imposter using glamor magic, doing their best to masquerade as a Scion based on their limited—and rather insulting—knowledge of each person. You’ve got no-good pretty boy Thancred, a Yda who left her brain behind alongside her pants, and a Y’shtola who’s… terrifyingly similar to the actual Y’shtola. This quest chain is one of the few times you get to see the Scions interacting with each other at length.

Previously, the Scions mostly assembled in the Solar for a long cutscene of nothing but exposition. This quest chain showed off each Scions’ quirks, sense of humor, and interpersonal relationships. Sure, Yda may be a bit of a shimbo, but even she thinks Thancred’s womanizing ways are super weird. And it’s not just you—all the Scions are intimidated by Y’shtola, even Papalymo. This quest chain helped players build a sense of camaraderie with the organization they have no choice but to join as part of the main story.

The Scions serve as the player's found family in FFXIV, and your relationship with them becomes much more prominent as you move through the storyline. Many of FFXIV's most emotional moments rely on you being attached to these characters and invested in the Scions as a group, so it's a shame that Patch 5.3 has cut one of the few quests that not only humanized the Scions but worked to show you that they consider each other friends.

Also, this quest was damn funny, and goodness knows A Realm Reborn needs a dash of funny.

I recently climbed back on the Final Fantasy XIV bicycle and it took me a short while to remember how the game worked, where I was and even how to get around the region without forking out gil for teleportation. Luckily, the game has two resources that help suggest what you should do next, and I got back on track with the Main Scenario Quest, wanting to dive into new content as quickly as possible.

I will admit that at first, I was trying to bash through things as quickly as possible, because a review for Shadowbringers had landed on my desk and the last time I played FF14, Heavensward was the latest expansion. I was an expansion behind and I needed to haul ass if I wanted to get something resembling a review done in any time period that was worth mentioning.

I found myself frustrated. In the time since I stopped playing, the developers had added several patches worth of content to Heavensward, which included many Main Scenario Quests involving the fallout of events in Heavensward. But before I get there, let me make sure we are all on the same page:

Main scenario what now?

There are a *lot* of quests in Final Fantasy XIV, and to help players keep track of things, they are split into different categories with different symbols and colours. Quests that add new features are blue with a plus sign. A quest with a sunburst around it falls under the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ). You see, unlike other MMOs that let you just abandon what you are doing once you reach the required level and head into an expansion or a brand new area, FF14 has everything tied to a single cohesive chain of quests that runs through the entirety of the game. These quests will often unlock access to areas, quests in a zone, access to dungeons, trials and more and unless you log into your account in a browser and fork out some money, there is no way to skip the MSQ. None. Nada.

The way that the MSQ is handled made me think about what the story means to the developers if they chose to structure it this way. Take it or leave it is basically what they are saying about the main story beats, and while that elevation of importance might mean you take longer to get to an expansion, you will at least know why you are there for the expansion and the various moving parts. Too often I complain that in other MMOs many of the movers and shakers are out of the picture until it is cinematic or big story time, not showing you what they have been up to the rest of the time. FF14 doesn’t do that: you see characters, what they were doing and the web of politics they are sometimes embroiled in.

Picking up the pieces

For example, I will delve into what happens between the end of Heavensward and the beginning of Stormblood. If you plan on playing this content yourself, you might want to skip the next few paragraphs.

In Heavensward, you help a nation that has become isolationist due to a war with dragons that has stretched on for a thousand years. Every facet of life there involves dragons: the church, the noble houses, the structure of the military. Life in this cold land is harsh. By the end, you learn that the war with the dragons was started by people, not dragons (Surprise, surprise!) and that the entire noble house and religious dogma are based on a lie that the two have worked in concert to uphold all this time. It causes people’s faith to fall to pieces around them, their identity and way of life threatened. The post-Heavensward quests involve you helping to pick up the pieces of land that had Church ruling state, with noble houses now exposed as having upheld a lie, wittingly or not, for so long.

There are those who fight against the change, like the church about to lose so much power and those who are worried that peace with the dragons means the death of their loved ones amounts to nothing. You get drawn into this, helping to pave the way for peace talks with the dragons, dealing with hostage-taking church officials, a sabotage attempt of the peace talks and an evil dragon that would rather everything dies instead of dragons and mortals living in peace. Instead of just leaving after causing a big upset, you are there picking up the pieces, trying to save a doomed friend and someone who has the burden of leadership hanging on them, with so many parties asking so much of them. It takes long and at times moves really slowly. Then at the end, you share a dinner with Aymeric de Borel, who has become a close friend of the Warrior of Light. It is a quiet, precious moment that made my character feel alive, like something more than just a murder hobo moving from land to land killing things, upsetting the status quo, then leaving again.

During that time you are also hunting down members of the Scions of Dawn, the group of heroes you belong to. Eventually, your investigations lead you to a place where rebellion is on everyone’s lips and things are about to take a nasty turn. In this story arc, you realise one character is changed and no longer a part of the Scions, and another dies to save friends and possibly the world from another Cataclysm. It is at this point that the focus starts shifting eastwards, with Stormblood beginning in the middle of the fallout of that rebellion.

Without playing those MSQs I would not know what was going on. Besides just leaving Aymeric out in the cold, I wouldn’t know about the fate of the Scions, who this large samurai is, that certain important characters were dead, or how we ended up fighting the empire again or even why someone had changed outfits. I would be lost and nothing would make sense. And without any sense, I might as well play a storyless game, like an idle clicker or a battle royale game.

A change of heart

I am not sure at what exact point I stopped seeing the post-Heavensward MSQ as a barrier to me writing a review and more as an integral part of why I was there in the first place. I have a newfound respect for the game developers that they have put the story so front and centre, making so many systems require progress in the MSQ. It has allowed the story team to write an intricate, interconnected web of intrigue, politics, love, loss, growth and adversity that you don’t see in enough games, probably because the story team is often left out in the cold, coming in to fill gaps left at the last minute. Over here the story is important and is allowed those slow moments, allowed to be front and centre. If you were looking for a game where you feel like the characters are more natural than games that force them to do weird things to fit a plot, you might want to give Final Fantasy XIV a go.

Final Fantasy XIV #2: Main Quest (Missões principais)

Final Fantasy 14 or FFXIV is one of the largest and most beloved MMOs in 2021. Even today, the game has a huge dedicated fanbase who play every day and love the game to bits. However, with such an overwhelmingly large world and game, how do you even begin to progress? That’s exactly why we’ve come up with this ultimate guide to FFXIV MSQ or Main Scenario Quests. Let’s jump right into the game and provide you with everything you need to know to progress quickly.

What Are MSQs in FFXIV?

FFXIV Main Scenario Quests

Anyone new to Final Fantasy 14 may be wondering what MSQ means. People throw it around here and there, but it’s jargon only people who’ve been playing understand. So, in FFXIV what is MSQ all about? To put it simply, FFXIV MSQ translates to Final Fantasy 14’s Main Scenario Quests.

If you’ve ever played a game before, you might know of the difference between main quests and side quests. Main quests usually tell the story of the game as a whole, including a character’s backstory, setting, etc. Side quests are tasks you usually find throughout the game and are more optional. Hence, they’re more for fun or for unlocking items and other things than for story completion.

In this case, FFXIV MSQs are Final Fantasy’s main quests that progress the story. As such, they usually include cutscenes, voice acting, and even open up the major story and gameplay features. These include airship travel, personal mounts, grand company access, and more.

What makes FFXIV MSQ unique is that the first MSQs you’ll encounter will be based on your starting city. Hence, people starting in Gridania might have a different experience from those starting in Lominsa. However, the FFXIV MSQ lineup does converge at a certain point to streamline the experience.

FFXIV MSQ List

When you’re playing at first, it can feel like you’ll be in the game forever before getting to the endgame. That’s why we’re here to demystify the process and provide a list of the FFXIV MSQ tasks just for you.

Each FFXIV MSQ was released patch by patch and gradually grew as players leveled up more and more. However, some of the others here are only unlocked through expansions like Heavensward, Stormblood, and/or Shadowbringers.

Unfortunately, we can’t list down every single FFXIV MSQ you’ll encounter. Hence, we’ll just run through what you might expect from each FFXIV MSQ section. Of course, you can still find an in-depth list of all the FFXIV MSQ titles, quest givers, levels, and rewards. Just head over to this handy FFXIV Wiki page for a complete list. Without further ado, here’s every FFXIV MSQ you can expect to encounter.

Seventh Umbral Era Quests (Level 1-50)

Seventh Umbral Era ffxiv msq

So you’ve already finished creating your character and selecting a job. What now? Well, it’s time to officially jump into your very first FFXIV MSQ at level 1. The first FFXIV MSQ lineup you’ll encounter is the Seventh Umbral Era Quests. These quests cover mostly level 1 to 50 and are part of the base game, A Realm Reborn. They were released in Patch 2.0 and have a total of 185-188 quests, depending on which city you begin.

Choosing a Lancer, Archer, or Conjurer job will land you in the Gridania Quest Chain for levels 1-15. On the other hand, Marauder and Arcanist jobs will redirect you to the Limsa Lominsa Quest Chain. Lastly, Gladiators, Pugilists, and Thaumaturges will begin through the Ul’dah Quest Chain.

As you can imagine, each city will start with a different FFXIV MSQ and progress differently. Both the Gridania and Lominsa quest chains contain 23 quests in total. However, the Ul’dah quest chain contains one more, which makes it 24, before the FFXIV MSQ lineup converges at level 15. Upon completing all of the FFXIV MSQ for levels 1-50, the story continues in the Seventh Astral Era Quests.

Seventh Astral Era Quests (Level 50)

After successfully reaching level 50, it’s time to dig into the story with the Seventh Astral Era Questline. The FFXIV MSQ under the Seventh Astral Era Quests all came from Patches 2.1 to 2.55. All of the quests here are still part of the base game, A Realm Reborn. Hence, you don’t need any expansions just yet.

The quest list under this category only has about 80 quests in total. While that may seem small compared to the 188 the Seventh Umbral Era gave, it’s still a pretty hefty task. Moreover, this number excludes the section’s required side quests and is all made for level 50.

On the other hand, some of the FFXIV MSQ you might receive here will have prerequisites. For example, the quest umbrella for “Before the Fall – Part 1” requires that you’ve already completed three side quests beforehand. These are: “Ifrit Bleeds, We Can Kill It,” “In for Garuda Awakening,” and “In a Titan Spot.”

Its second part also has one other large side quest you must fulfill before you can proceed. Specifically, this is “The Light of Hope” quest, which requires you to complete all side quests within the Crystal Tower. Thanks to these, it may take you some time before you reach the next part of the main story. However, once you do complete them, you can finally move on to the Heavensward MSQ.

Heavensward Main Scenario Quests (Levels 50-60)

Heavensward Main Scenario ffxiv msq

Unlike the previous section, the Heavensward MSQ is made not just for 1 level, but for 10. That’s right, doing these quests take you through levels 50 to 60. However, be prepared for quite a long journey ahead, as you have to complete 94 FFXIV MSQ to move on.

As you might have expected, the Heavensward MSQ is part of the Heavensward expansion released under patch 3.0. The FFXIV MSQ list for levels 50-51 consists of 29 quests in total. These are further subdivided into four categories: the Main, Artoirel, Emmanellain, and Main Quests (Continued). Afterward, you can proceed to the rest of the FFXIV MSQ tasks this expansion brings you until level 60. Then, the story goes on in the Dragonsong War Quests.

Dragonsong War Quests (Level 60)

Successfully finishing the Heavensward MSQ will finally unlock the Dragonsong War Quests. This FFXIV MSQ list consists of 44 quests overall under Patches 3.1 to 3.55 from the Heavensward expansion. All of the quests under this category are made for level 60, unlike the previous section. Afterward, the story also continues in the next set called the Stormblood Main Scenario Quests.

Stormblood Main Scenario Quests (Level 60-70)

Stormblood Main Scenario ffxiv msq

The next batch of FFXIV MSQ tasks on our list falls under the Stormblood Main Scenario Quests. These quests were made for levels 60-70 and were released with Patch 4.0 under the Stormblood expansion. In total, there are 122 quests in this questline and the story unfolds further in “The Legend Returns” quests.

There are 36 quests initially for just levels 60-61. Moreover, they’re subdivided into the following categories: Main, M’naago, Meffrid, and Main (Continued). After completing these, the game will allow you to move onto FFXIV MSQ designed for levels 62-70.

The Legend Returns Quests (Level 70)

In “The Legend Returns,” FFXIV MSQ tasks presented to you will all require you to be at level 70. These quests were released under Patches 4.1 to 4.56 and continue Stormblood’s original story. There are 40 quests in total under this, and the story likewise continues under the Shadowbringers MSQ.

Shadowbringers Main Scenario Quests (Levels 70-80)

Shadowbringers Main Scenario

Patch 5.0 brought about all the FFXIV MSQ you see in the Shadowbringers expansion. As you might have guessed, these simply pick up the story from where it left off previously. There are a lot of quests under this patch, coming in at 106 in total. Moreover, you have to finish four Role Questlines before you complete this expansion pack. Afterward, the story goes on in the Post-Shadowbringers MSQ.

Post-Shadowbringers Main Scenario Quests (Level 80)

At the time of writing, the last batch of FFXIV MSQ released was under the Post-Shadowbringers MSQ. These were all made for level 80 players and continue the story from Shadowbringers. They were released under patches 5.1 to 5.55 and are currently still ongoing. In total, this section carries 51 FFXIV MSQ that you have to complete. By the end, you would have successfully reached the finish line of FFXIV (for now).

FFXIV MSQ Tips & Tricks

Quick FFXIV MSQ Guide

We’ve listed above the FFXIV MSQ tasks in existence at the time of writing. However, you may feel a little overwhelmed and still don’t know where to start, despite seeing an overview of everything. How are you supposed to go through all of the FFXIV MSQ tasks? Is there an efficient way? Here’s a quick guide that might help you resolve some of those questions.

In What Order Should You Do the MSQs?

In MMOs like these, it’s often tempting to skip the base game’s main story and simply jump into side quests. After all, there’s a sprawling world out there just waiting for you to immerse yourself in it. However, FFXIV MSQs should still be your main priority when playing the game. That’s because they contain the main story and unlock some essential content you can’t experience otherwise.

The order of the FFXIV MSQs, however, is pretty straightforward. Simply move on to the next FFXIV MSQ once you’re at the proper level requirement. However, it’s also advisable to prioritize Job Quests on the side as these will help you unlock more abilities. This can make your life a lot easier as you move forward through the game.

How Long Will the Quests Take?

As you can see, there are hundreds of FFXIV MSQ within the game. Hence, if you’re asking how to speed through the MSQ in FFXIV, you might not get a satisfactory answer. That’s because it isn’t a game you can exactly speedrun like other story-based one-off games.

To finish all the FFXIV MSQ, you have to focus a lot on leveling up. At first, you might find this to be an easy task because the game makes it easy to progress. However, things begin to slow down and become much more difficult after you reach higher levels. Leveling up suddenly needs more experience, and thus, more grinding.

Speed-Boosting Tactics

Thankfully, FFXIV does offer multiple ways for players to efficiently farm for experience, no matter the level. Of course, one way to do it is to grind for random enemies and complete dungeons multiple times. However, a few tricks do exist that might help.

For example, making use of food might be a good idea as you go on adventures. That’s because these food items grant players various buffs depending on what they eat. Moreover, these also bring the player an experience modifier for a limited time. If you play your cards right, you can level up much faster than without eating food.

On the other hand, you can also speed things up by using sanctuaries, completing daily quests, and tackling FFXIV MSQ. Tackling FFXIV is a big one, as it can give you lots of experience pretty quickly. Don’t skip them because you might otherwise miss the XP if you focus too much on sidequests.

Lastly, it’s important to make efficient use of the game’s leveling system. Obtaining extra XP can be difficult, especially as you reach higher levels. That’s why it’s also important to check the Duty Roulette and complete your daily duties. Just head to the Duty Finder after a day reset and you’ll find bonus Gil and XP upon completion. It might feel like a grind at first. However, it’s a necessary evil, especially when you’re further into the game.

Buckle Up, It’ll Take a While

Unfortunately, even with these speed-boosting tactics, you still can’t get through all the FFXIV MSQ quickly. There are hundreds of MSQs and hours of cutscenes to sit through — not to mention an entire world to navigate. It’ll likely take you 120 to 140 hours to finish the whole thing. However, if you like playing with casual pacing, it’ll likely take much longer.

Of course, you can always purchase items that allow you to skip the base game’s FFXIV MSQ. Afterward, you can immediately proceed to expansions like Heavensward, Stormblood, and Shadowbringers. However, these will cost you quite a bit of real-world money. Moreover, doing this means that you’ll skip much of the narrative and won’t be familiar with certain characters and locations.

What Are the Prerequisites for Each MSQ?

The biggest prerequisite for each FFXIV MSQ is usually the level requirement you need to unlock the quest. Of course, some FFXIV MSQ requires you to reach one level to unlock and play all of them. For example, the Seventh Astral Era only needs you to be at level 50 to play all of its content. The same is true for Dragonsong, requiring players to be at level 60 for all of its MSQs.

On the other hand, some FFXIV MSQ also has specific prerequisites per questline. For example, one instance wherein you’re required to complete specific sidequests is with the Before the Fall questline. However, these are pretty rare and don’t always happen.

What Is Final Fantasy All About?

Final Fantasy Logo

Most Final Fantasy games are usually about heroes who are called to vanquish evil and save the world. That is, more or less, the basic premise of each game. However, there are twists, turns, and changes to this formula from time to time.

Nonetheless, you’ll find similar mechanics repeated from past games in each iteration. The games will usually provide players with a host of characters they can play to progress the story. Then, they often have to explore the world, battle enemies — and on and on the cycle goes until the endgame.

The first game involved four young Light Warriors who each had one of the four elemental crystals. Through some turn of events, these crystals are darkened and they must defeat their foes to save the world.

In FFXIV, however, the story now takes place in the world of Hydaelyn. It’s a fictional planet containing multiple continents, environments, and climates — much like earth. However, the game is specifically set in Eorzea, five years after what happened in its 2010 release. Continuing from the original game, the primal dragon Bahamut has just broken out of its lunar jail. Now, it’s up to the players to stop the Seventh Umbral Calamity from happening and save Eorzea.

Final Word

There are hundreds of FFXIV MSQs within the game and it can be daunting to think of finishing them all. It takes most players over a hundred hours just to complete the main quests — or even just the base game. Moreover, with the game still evolving, there’s no telling how many more FFXIV MSQs you’ll have to sift through.

However, FFXIV isn’t critically acclaimed for nothing. It has one of the most expansive worlds with a passionate fanbase and continuous developer support. Moreover, the game pulls from all of Final Fantasy’s history, making it both fun and nostalgic to play. Getting through all the FFXIV MSQ might be intimidating when you’re just starting. However, it’s worth the effort, especially if you love massive multiplayer games like these.

With Final Fantasy 14’s Endwalker expansion on the horizon, both new and veteran players will want to prepare so they’re ready to go when the expansion is released. Our FFXIV guide helps you collect the best gear, the quests to complete, and other any other steps to prepare for Endwalker.

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker will be released on Nov. 23, with early access for players who pre-order Endwalker beginning on Nov. 19. If you pre-order, you’ll also get bonus earrings that will boost your EXP gained up to level 80, which is perfect for catching up.

If you’re level 80 and you beat Shadowbringers, what else is there to do? Between working on your relic weapon, there are several other things.

Try out the FFXIV: Endwalkerbenchmark

If you are playing on an older PC, test out the Endwalker benchmark software before you buy. The hardware requirements for Endwalker won’t be significantly upgraded from Shadowbringers, but it’s worth double checking to make sure your PC can handle the game well.

You can also design your male Viera in the benchmark, if you plan on swapping races when the expansion comes out.

Grab level 70 healing and maiming gear for Sage and Reaper

If you plan on playing either of the new jobs, you’ll want gear for them. While unlocking the job will give you a coffer of themed gear, the gear won’t be very good.

Grab Augmented Scaevan gear for them from Enna in Rhalgr’s Reach, which you can trade Allagan Tomestones of Poetics for.

If you have gil but no tomes, grabbing level 70 Rakshasa crafted gear will work, too.

Finish the main scenario quest

This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’ll need to be caught up on all the main scenario quests (MSQ). They’ll be labeled if you have any left in the MSQ user interface on your screen. If that doesn’t appear, you may need to toggle it in your UI settings.

Nearly all content is locked behind MSQ, whether it’s raids or dungeons, so you’ll definitely want to be completely caught up.

Complete the Hildibrand side quests

This is optional, but if you like collecting emotes and unlocking all the trials you can, catch up in the silly Hildibrand side quests. No new Hildibrand quests came out during the Shadowbringers expansion era, but more should be coming in Endwalker. To get all the latest stuff, you need to be caught up.

You can start the Hildibrand side quests at Wynmond in Ul’dah - Steps of Nald, if you haven’t already.

Grab gear that’s item level 500 or higher

Based on patterns from previous expansions, the first dungeon in each expansion requires an item level 30 below the previous expansion’s max. Thus, the first dungeon in Endwalker will very likely require you to have gear at item level 500 or higher.

It’s best to prepare this before you need it. Here are some easy-to-get armor sets that will help boost you up:

You’ll very likely be able to grab Augmented Cryptlurker gear (530 item level) easily once Endwalker launches, which brings us to the next point …

Cap out your non-gil currencies

Right before the expansion drops, have the max amount of Allagan Tomestones of Poetics, Allegory, and Revelation.

Based on previous expansions, you will be able to use Allagan Tomestones of Poetics to get Cryptlurker gear, which is a very easy way to boost your item level. (As of this writing, you can only use the slightly harder to get Allagan Tomestones of Revelations to get Cryptlurker equipment.) When Endwalker rolls around, you’ll be able to gear up some of your jobs quickly using Poetics. You can only hold 2,000 Poetics at once, but you’ll need more than 2,000 to get a complete set.

It’s also likely that, once Endwalker gets released, you’ll be able to convert your Allegory and Revelation tomes to Poetics at a lower rate, which will be helpful with the above issue.

Complete the Binding Coil of Bahamut and Omega raid series

Story writer Natsuko Ishikawa recommends that players complete two side quest raid series to supplement the Endwalker story: the Binding Coil of Bahamut and Omegascape.

You can start the Binding Coil of Bahamut raid quests from Urianger in The Waking Sands and Omegascape raid quests from Wedge in Rhalgr’s Reach.

For the extra mile, pre-prep EXP

If you want to be slightly over-prepared for the expansion, you can pre-prepare EXP to gain so when the level cap increases, you can get ahead. Any of the following will help with this:

  • Completing high-level side quests and waiting to turn them in.
  • Completing a Wondrous Tails book and waiting to turn it in.
  • Logging off in a sanctuary before the update to ensure that you have accumulated rest EXP.
