Bar Stool Parts and Components

Gloss Coco Bar Stool Red

Base & Incorporated Floor Protectors

The first part is the base, which is designed to keep the whole stool stable and varies in size with design. This can come as either a round conical base or a flat base; which are usually square but can be circular depending on the style of the stool. Whilst the coned shape helps round bases with stability, flat bases are a lot heavier and lower the centre of gravity to counteract the seat above. The conical base has a rubber ring beneath that protects floor surfaces from scratches, and has a hole in the middle to accommodate the gas lift mechanism, whilst flat bases have felt pads below which offer excellent protection of more delicate flooring.

Collar & Gas Lift Column

Pictured below is a hydraulic gas lift mechanism that slots into the hole on the round base, where it locks into place with a compression joint for a solid construction. A decorative chromed collar is available on a number of styles, fitting between the base and gas cylinder to decorate the joint where the two parts meet for a trendier look. On flat bases, the hydraulic is held in place by a number or bolts, making a rigid connection that can be tightened with an Allen key. The hydraulic, which provides the stool with variable height and 360 degree swivel, is made up of two cylinders with a valve between that controls air flow, activated by a button on the narrower end. When this button is pressed, an unloaded hydraulic will expand to raise the stool, and when loaded will compress to lower it.

Footrest & Seat

These last 2 parts are probably the most interesting as they influence the overall styling, shape and comfort the most. Slotting over the top of the gas lift mechanism is the footrest, which is usually welded to a slender stem that protects the joint between the two parts of the gas lift. The footrest comes in a variety of designs, from half moon shaped (pictured below), circular designs held by spokes to more designer squared and even triangular, that add visual impact. A number screw directly to the seat, such as the neck of the Coco bar stool, or the cascade footrest of the Cadiz. The top section also houses the lever that activates the hydraulic, depressing the button when pulled upwards. You will note that on the lower section, there is a nylon sleeve, in this case black. The function of this is to reduce friction between the footrest and column.

Finally, the bar stools are topped out by the seat, which is affixed to the footrest by four bolts and usually washers, making a secure and steady connection. Some seats have a pair of spacers that are placed between the front screw holes and the metal plate at the top of the footrest, increasing the gap between and giving the seat a slight incline. This is only showcased on some models however, enhancing the design and giving a more relaxing seating position.

How to Replace Bar Stool Seats

By Wade Shaddy

Update bar stools with new seats.

Bar stools are built in pieces. The frame is assembled and finished and the seat is installed later. There are two types: those that swivel and those that have seats that are fixed in place to the frame. Typical bar stool seats are fastened on using screws. If your bar stool seats are in need of replacement or you just want to change the look, this type of seat is standardized for easy replacement. You can find one that fits in a variety of different styles, or you can swap them from different stools. All you need is a drill/driver.

Frame Type

Turn the stool upside down. Screws are located inside holes in the frame. There are at least two holes on each of the four sides of the frame. If the stool has a round frame, the screw holes will be evenly spaced around the perimeter. Insert the end of a drill/driver equipped with a Phillips tip into the holes.

Unscrew the screws using the drill/driver, and remove them. Save the screws to use later. Lift the stool frame off the seat. Stand the stool upright.

Insert one screw into one hole until you can see the top of it emerging from the frame. Hold the seat centered above the frame. Line up the tip of the screw with a pilot hole in the frame. Place the seat on the frame, allowing the tip of the screw to enter the pilot hole. Tighten it slightly with the drill/driver. Insert screws into all the holes, adjusting the seat slightly if needed to line up all the holes with the screws. Tighten all of them slightly. If there are no pilot holes, center the seat on the frame, and insert screws in the holes.

Drive the screws tight using the drill/driver moving diagonally from screw to screw.

Swivel Type

Turn the stool upside down. There are two metal plates on the bottom of the seat. Turn the frame of the chair. The top plate will swivel to expose four screws in the four corners of the bottom plate.

Use a drill/driver to remove the screws, and save them. Lift the frame off the seat. Both plates will remain on the frame. Stand the frame upright. Swivel the top plate to expose four screws in the bottom plate. Remove the screws. Lift the two plates off the frame. They are held together with a bearing and will not come apart.

Place the plate assembly centered on the bottom of the new seat. Turn the top plate to expose the screw holes. If there are pilot holes in the new seat, line up the holes in the plate with the pilot holes. Insert screws you removed earlier in the holes in the plate. Drive them in tight.

Place the seat upside down. Place the stool frame upside down centered on the seat. Turn the swivel to expose the screw holes. Line up the pilot holes if it has them. Insert the original screws in the holes, and drive them in tight to secure the new seat to the stool.

Tips

  • You can find almost any type of replacement seat online. Other options are furniture factories, or restaurant furniture supply outlets. Take one of the old seats off, and use it for comparison for the best fit.

Warnings

  • Some bar stool seats are not removable. This type of seat is upholstered directly to the frame.

Don't you agree, Dmitry Alekseevich. - Zam, all designers called by name and patronymic, although most of them were younger than him. Mitya assented, smiling, although he did not consider himself cream, rightly believing that there is a better designer in the city of N-sk. Victor, puffing on a cigarette, also silently agreed; but he and Mitya knew this precisely to the cream of himself and attributed it.

Mitya's electric train came up first, and after shaking hands with his colleagues, Mitya climbed into the vestibule and went into the carriage.
