IOP Manufacturing Company

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/s7mddidn_400x400.jpg
Short for Important Operation Prototype, IOP is G&K's main supplier of T-Dolls and equipment.

    Havier Witkin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/250px_character_profile_weitkins.png

Voiced by:Norio Wakamoto

Founder and executive president of IOP Manufacturing Company.

  • Establishing Character Moment: He's introduced in Chapter 9 at a press conference between the military and PMCs like Griffon & Kryuger, and it's pretty clear from the beginning that something's... off about his politeness. Not helping matters is that at least two KCCO officers in attendance want him dead on the spot, with one of them even drawing a gun on him in public as soon as he sees Havier.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's basically one of the few high-ranking figures who at least pretends he's on the Commander's side, providing them generous supplies and intelligence.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": In the non-English versions, he goes by the name Harvey Weltkins.
  • Thrill Seeker: At least in regards to business decisions. The start of chapter 3 in the Continuum Turbulence event has him exclaiming "Boring weapons are useless!" right after explaining to Angelia how illegal G&K's Heavy Ordnance Corps are. It certainly doesn't help that their heavy weapons tech was sourced from Architect.
  • We Used to Be Friends: He and Kryuger were once friends until Kryuger helped Lyco defect from IOP to Sangvis Ferri, something he has never forgiven Kryuger for.

New Soviet Union

    Victor Pavlovich Zelinsky

Soviet Minister of Interior and head of FSB.
  • The Dreaded: Naturally, being the head of the FSB means Zelinsky wields a terrifying amount of practical and political power that he can serve as a counter KCCO. Everybody who knows who he is knows to be extremely cautious around him.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: He went from a lowly Volkswagen engineer into one of the most powerful man in the Soviet Union.

DEFY

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jleykjl.png

Those who dare to defy destiny

A special forces team that was formerly contracted by Russia's Federal Security Bureau.

    The group as a whole

  • Animal Motifs: Wolves. Due to their viciousness and ruthless efficiency, the squad has been compared to a wolfpack several times.
  • Ace Custom: All four of them are outfitted with military-grade parts and even some technologies not seen in other dolls — in particular AK-12 and AK-15's advanced visual modules. Mirror Stage reveals that they are designed by someone named "Shaw", a friend of Griffin.
  • A Day in the Limelight: The majority of Dual Randomness event is focused on Angie and Task Force DEFY's investigation in Bremen. Half of Mirror Stage's story is also told from their perspective.
  • Badass in a Nice Suit: The whole squad shows up in Dual Randomness wearing snazzy business suits, as part of their civilian cover.
  • Elite Army: Angelia's two T-Dolls, AK-12 and AN-94, are an elite fighting force all on their own. The former is all too fond of reminding "lesser" T-Dolls of this fact. Former AR Team members M4A1 and AR-15 later get rescued by them, eventually joining them as thanks for upgrading them both with a MOD 3 form, further strengthening their forces.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Collectively pulls one off as part of Angelia's final gambit against Yegor in Polarized Light.
  • Mystical White Hair: While there's nothing mystical about any of them, the whole unit has white hair (or, in the case of AN-94, close enough to white hair). Their status as a Russian black ops team implied to have legendary skill might make them fit the bill for "mystical" as far as the more bog-standard militaries are concerned. The AR Team neon sign dorm decoration lampshaded this by changing M4A1's and AR-15's portions of the logo to an off-white tone to signify their change of allegiance from G&K to DEFY.
  • Undying Loyalty: Despite their name and constant bickering, all four of them are willing to sacrifice themselves for Angelia's sake.

    Angelia

Anna Viktorovna Tsoi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/_07.png

Voiced by:Rina Sato

Leader of Team DEFY. A former commander of Griffin & Kryuger, now working as an agent for the Federal Security Bureau.
  • All There in the Manual: Her real name and backstory are revealed in the second set of Confidential Documents bundled with the second artbook.
  • Artificial Limbs: Her left arm and right leg are prosthetics.
  • Batman Gambit:
    • In the Continuum Turbulence event, she baited Yegor into confronting her alone, knowing that he is far too focused on getting revenge on her, and then revealing that she had planted numerous explosives all around the building they're in. Yegor doesn't flinch, at which point Angie reveals that she also planted another Collapse Fluid container among the bombs, which will vaporize everything in a 3 kilometer radius, including what remains of Yegor forces stationed outside the building. It takes her a while until she talks Yegor into surrendering. Turns out the Collapse Fluid container doesn't exist, and the bombs aren't even rigged with detonators. When Yegor realizes this, the rest of his forces have already evacuated the area.
    • Dual Randomness shows Ange letting up her guard to suss out a potential mole. Specifically, she had AK-12 fake her death earlier and ordered her to stow in a helicopter meant to carry her and Morridow. When Morridow revealed herself to be working for Paradeus, AK-12 had already knocked out the pilot and took over the controls, though Morridow opted to jump off the chopper instead of being taken prisoner.
    • She repeats the same trick with Lady Gray, herself trained by Morridow. She came into Gray's office alone and laid down on the operating table to get her prosthetics serviced. Before Gray can lay a hand on Ange, though, AK-15 and AN-94 breached the room to take her hostage. Her plan would have been successful if not for the fact that Gray is a Nyto, allowing her to avoid attacks from both dolls and retreat through a hidden passage.
  • Consummate Professional: Ange takes her assignments very seriously. If you set her as your adjutant, most of her lines involves chiding the Commander for their supposed laxness.
  • Determinator:
    • She spends a good portion of Continuum Turbulence on the brink of severe ELID symptoms, seemingly only staying alive through sheer willpower alone.
    • Mirror Stage begins with her being tortured for 48 hours straight. She took a good night's rest, had some coffee and biscuits, and gets right back on her investigations.
  • Deuteragonist: She takes an increasingly larger role in the plot after her debut in Singularity, to the point where most of Dual Randomness is told from her perspective.
  • Guest-Star Party Member: Becomes one in Dual Randomness and Mirror Stage. She is counted as a single-link handgun with a skill that damages and pushes back enemies.
  • Going Native: Her parents were originally from Korea but she grew up in Russia.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Is it Angelica, Angelique, Angelina, or Angelia?
  • Stone Wall: Despite ostensibly being a regular human (prosthetics aside) who is only armed with a handgun, Angie is much tankier in gameplay than the rest of DEFY, boasting HG-level evasion, a shotgun-esque skill that knocks back enemies, and a health pool surpassing SMGs. In fact, at least one battle in Mirror Stage requires Angie to soak up damage in place of her T-Dolls.
  • Zombie Infectee: She was exposed to Collapse Fluid fallout after the events of Singularity. The third part of Continuum Turbulence shows her rapidly deteriorating condition, to the point she needs an adrenaline shot to the heart just to stay awake, but she was rescued quickly enough for her infection to be treated.

    AK-12

One of Ange's personal combat T-Dolls. Smug and arrogant to pretty much everyone, but becomes cold and calculating in combat.
See her entry in Girls Frontline Assault Rifles for more information.

    AN-94

One of Ange's personal combat T-Dolls. Seemingly only exists to follow AK-12 wherever she goes.
See her entry in Girls Frontline Assault Rifles for more information.

    AK-15

One of Ange's personal combat T-Dolls. The grumpy, takes-no-nonsense type.
See her entry in Girls Frontline Assault Rifles for more information.

    RPK-16

One of Ange's personal combat T-Dolls. The most approachable person of the group, though not without quirks of her own.
See her entry in Girls Frontline Machine Guns for more information.

404

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ddwtkjw.png

Those who do not exist

A covert mercenary team whose MO is to wipe the memoriesof their clients after a completed job. Not even G&K T-Dolls are spared from this.

Chapter 1 of Operation Singularity reveals that Task Force 404 was founded by Angelia, of Task Force DEFY.

    The group as a whole

  • Hired Guns: Despite ostensibly operating under Angelia's leash, 404 is willing to work on any contract given to them, be it from G&K or someone else.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: They induce this on T-Dolls they work with to keep their operations clandestine. Notably, they can't do this to humans; 416 calls Kalina a "security hole" during Continuum Turbulence, lamenting the fact that she can't wipe her memory.
  • Perpetual Poverty: Because of their MO, they can't hold on to any source of funding for very long, if at all. 416 is often the first to complain about their financial situation. Even when UMP45 gets upgraded to MOD 3, her appearance is notably ramshackle compared to other MOD 3 T-Dolls, even compared to UMP9, since it's all her go-to mechanic Deele could manage at the time.
  • The Spook: In-universe. Only a select few individuals know that they exist at all, and those who do know almost nothing about the individual members.
  • Street Samurai: They show elements of this archetype, being tech-savvy mercenaries with anti-authoritarian streak.
  • Unperson: An inversion, given that they actively cover up any traces of their existence.

    UMP45

404's squad leader. Has a penchant for teasing everyone.
See her entry in Girls Frontline Submachine Guns for more information.

    UMP9

UMP45's right-hand T-Doll and the merrymaker of the squad.
See her entry in Girls Frontline Submachine Guns for more information.

    HK416

One of 404's marksmen. Seems to hold a grudge against everyone closely related to her, 404 included.
See her entry in Girls Frontline Assault Rifles for more information.

    G11

The other marksman of 404. Perpetually sleepy and generally prefers to stay off the frontline.
See her entry in Girls Frontline Assault Rifles for more information.

Other Units

    Drone

Artist:

Voiced by:

  • Stone Wall: When summoned by a Taunt Fairy, they serve as a decoy for you, soaking up bullets from Sangvis Ferri units. Their health also scales with the skill level of your Taunt Fairy, meaning that if it's sufficiently upgraded, it can soak up several hits from the Jupiter, allowing you to shred them when the cannons are still active. It can also distract the Rodelero and tank its laser beam, allowing you to move your units away from the middle row and watch the Rodelero wasting its time attacking the Drone.
  • Training Dummy: Their primary purpose is to be used for target practice.

    Nightmare

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chibi_screenshot.png

Artist:

Voiced by:

Piles of corrupted data found in the digital world or in ones Digi-Mind. Predictably, they do not exist in the physical world.

  • All There in the Manual: You'd only know this unit's name if you checked the Index.
  • My Name Is ???: Long-pressing on one of these units only shows "???" next to their profile picture.
  • No Name Given: Before enemy units were integrated into the Index, this unit had no real name. GFWiki simply referred to them as "Unknown".
  • Moveset Clone: These guys are pretty much just the digital version of ELID Infectees.
  • Zerg Rush: Like with Dinergates, Nightmares are at their most dangerous in large swarms, but can easily be dispatched by MGs. Unlike Dinergates, however, Nightmares have high HP and don't move very fast.

Pan-European Cooperation

    Gilda Ulrich

Chairwoman of the Pan-European Cooperation Initiative's Executive Committee.
  • The Needs of the Many: While under siege by the White faction, she refuses to evacuate the Belgrade cathedral with Griffin forces until the civilians who are also there are evacuated as well.
  • Nerves of Steel: Is unfazed when a rebel soldier aims his gun on her head during her meeting with the Neo-Soviet ambassador at Belgrade. She mentions that is isn't the first time this has happened to her.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Becomes one in Dual Randomness. She approves of Angie's investigation in the city and offers what help she could, even lending two of her subordinates.
  • Sacrificial Lion: She was send to Belgrade as a pawn of her bosses to gain concessions from the Neo-Soviets should she be assassinated during the meeting between their ambassadors.

    Morridow

Chairwoman Ulrich's secretary. Acts as a liaison during Angelia's investigation in Bremen.

For tropes relating to her appearances after Dual Randomness, click here.
  • Ditzy Secretary: For an aide to a top European bureaucrat, Morridow can be surprisingly airheaded. Justified in that she's still new to the job.
  • The Idealist: Morridow likes to believe in the goodness of the hearts of people. Even when her identity is outed, she seem to be fully committed to Paradeus philosophy and is convinced they will win in the end.
  • Naïve Newcomer: It is mentioned that she is a relatively recent hire, and thus hasn't experienced much of the world's darker side.

    Hopps

An ex-GSG9 member, now serving as Madam Ulrich's bodyguard. He handles security detail for Angie in Bremen.
  • Back for the Dead: Hopps returns for several brief scenes in Poincare Recurrence as one of the people hired by Paradeus to smuggle their Boxes of Iaso. Bramedb then sniped him in the heart before he can provide more info.
  • The Cynic: Contrasting Morridow's bright outlook, Hopps believes that humans are ultimately self-serving and would deceive each other to their own ends. Not unlike his true motives.
  • The Mole: One for the German Independence Party.
  • Motive Rant: He gives a fairly lengthy one after his cover is blown.
  • The Quiet One: Hopps generally keeps to himself and only speaks when needed.

Stasi

     J

One of the Stasi agents deployed to assist Angelia. A colleague of K.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: J is much more jovial than his fellow Stasi agents, but that doesn't mean he's any less dangerous than them.
  • Cowboy Cop: J's frustration around the Mansion's case led him to start an investigation on his own, despite repeated warnings from his superior. This bites him in the ass repeatedly, netting him and K suspension, a key suspect dead, and several Stasi agents killed.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Having the squad of Stasi agents under his command massacred by Paradeus troops, and then seeing Mona being cruelly manipulated by Bramedb just to torture him sent J over the edge. He would have slit his own throat right there and then if it wasn't for the Commander's intervention.
  • Handsome Lech: He likes to flirt with women if the situation allows for it. Most aren't exactly receptive to his advances.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Agent K and later Mona. J is a lot more emotionally-driven than either two.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Agent K. Despite butting heads frequently, K gives his buddy full backing while investigating Paradeus on their own.

     Light

A young Stasi agent and a rising star within their ranks.
  • An Arm and a Leg: His right arm is severed by Lady Grey during the mansion ambush.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Grievously wounded, bleeding out, and missing a limb, Light strapped explosives into himself and go out in a blaze to save Angie from being captured. Unfortunately, the explosion barely phases Lady Grey, and both AK-15 and AN-94 failed to exploit the opening because RPK-16 hacked them.
  • Hero-Worshipper: A downplayed example. Light greatly admires Ange because in his eyes, she is the closest embodiment to the ideal hero he wanted to become. He almost always keeps a professional attitude around her, however, and only reveals this side to Ange when they have a private moment together.
  • Teen Genius: Downplayed in that he's actually 19, but that's still an outrageously young age for an agent of his rank.
  • Shotguns Are Just Better: He armed himself with an HK512 after finding out handguns don't do much against Paradeus troops. J later notes this is the model of shotgun Light is most experienced with.

     Romy

The head of Stasi during the events of Poincare Recurrence.
  • Iron Lady: As befitting someone of her position. When Romy wants you to do something, you do it exactly as she says. This causes J no small amounts of headache as she explicitly forbids the investigation from the Mansion case, seemingly under instructions from General Schweinsteiger.

Sier

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_profile_dier.png

Dier

Voiced by: Kaoru Sakura (Sier) Jun Fukuyama (Dier)

A pair of siblings hired by 404 Squad to act as their maintenance personnel.
  • Crossplayer: The Bounty Feast collaboration event reveals Dima as a virtual avatar of Dier.
  • Has a Type: Dier is attracted to G11, to the point he bought A-Dolls who are same model as G11 to work as maids at his mansion. The UMP twins makes fun on his crush on G11 that they even blackmail him to perform UMP 9's Neural Upgrade in exchange for not mentioning his crush.
  • Punny Name: Their names together approximate the phrase "seal the deal".
  • Rich Boredom: Dier uses his work as a doll mechanic to escape the boredom of his cushy civilian life.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": They're called Seele and Deele in the game's file names.
  • Teen Genius: Both of them are, but Dier especially. He is the one trusted with repairing UMP45's wreck of a body. Not only he pulled this off with limited tools and materials, he also crammed so many upgrades on her that it ended up as UMP45's MOD 3. Sier is no slouch, either, pulling nothing short of a logistics miracle to get the materials Dier needed, considering 404's MO and their Perpetual Poverty.

    K

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_profile_k.png

Voiced by:Jun Fukuyama

An Information Broker. He is the target of SOP II and RO635's mission in Belgrade.
  • Aloof Ally: During Isomer. His goals are aligned with the Commander, but he isn't shy in telling the Commander that he is not irreplaceable.
  • Body Double: Has a specialized doll model that can mimic his features down to the smallest details. This is how he managed to escape from the White Faction's assassins.
  • By-the-Book Cop: In contrast to J, K is much more stringent on following protocols. He does let his conscience get the better of him in the first chapter of Poincare Recurrence, assisting J on his unofficial investigation to find the truth behind Light's death.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Not only the maid dolls under his command are modded with Super Speed and Super Reflexes, their digiminds are bolstered with plenty of electronic warfare defenses, and should those fail, he also implanted a self-destruct command into them. Even the little shack he ostensibly operates from has a secret exit into Belgrade's sewer system, where he had weapon stashes and traps planted all over the place.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: For the EN server. He appeared in the VA-11 HALL-A crossover as one of Augmented Eye's reporters, way before his storyline debut in Operation Isomer.
  • One-Letter Name: Only known as K. The Polarized Light event reveals that K is the first letter in his full name, Kain Schwaben.
  • Majorly Awesome: Once his jig is up in Polarized Light, he is immediately identified as Major Kain Schwalbe.
  • Mission Control: Serves as this during Operation Isomer and parts of Polarized Light.
  • The Mole: Turns out to be one for The Stasi.
  • Red Herring: His portraits have the name "Jason" in their filenames, initally throwing off dataminers. His name is actually Kain.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With J, another Stasi agent. He actually laughed out loud when seeing a heavily-injured J, only to promptly miss him as he's carted off to the hospital.

    Marlohe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_profile_maid.png

Voiced by: Kaoru Sakura

K's maid doll.
  • Berserk Button: Badmouthing her master K.
  • Blade Below the Shoulder: K apparently modified Marlohe to be able to deploy blades for combat. She appreciates the function.
  • Emotionless Girl: Much like her master, Marlohe almost always speaks in an aloof manner. She opens up quite a lot when set as your adjutant, however.
  • Job-Stealing Robot: One of her adjutant lines has her complaining about dinergates being converted into cleaning robots. This is despite her being, you know, a robot herself.
  • Hidden Depths: If you set her as an adjutant, Marlohe reveals that she wishes to practice in the firing range so she can protect K and the Commander on the same level as T-Dolls.

    Passadou

An opera singer who was killed when the theatre she was performing in caught fire. She is the focal character of the Halloween 2020 event, "Butterfly in a Cocoon".
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Logs recovered from AH-400's memory shows that Passadou's megalomania and narcissism worsened as the illness claimed her ability to sing. This culminated with Passadou illegally altering her maidservant doll into a perfect body double of her, then having her die in a fire so that "Passadou" is remembered forever.
  • Body Double: She had her servant doll modified to resemble her both in looks and voice.
  • Dead Artists Are Better: Passadou is remembered as a brilliant opera singer whose career tragically ended at its peak. This turns out to be an invoked trope, as the whole thing was staged by Passadou herself.
  • Ill Girl: She suffers from Lou Gehrig's disease, which gradually weakens her muscles to the point she can't sing anymore.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: She spent an entire year after murdering her husband and servant in a fire living a comfortable, if secluded life. Then TAC-50 came along and exposed the truth to the media, leading to her immolating herself rather than seeing her reputation tarnished forever.
  • Posthumous Character: Passadou died during the theater fire exactly one year before the event takes place. As the event reveals, she's not as posthumous as most assumed.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Goes through one as TAC-50 unravels more and more of her story. Then she loses it completely when TAC reveals her entire confession is being streamed to the internet.
  • Woman Scorned: She mistook AH-400 comforting Arla as the latter cheating on her for a doll. This ultimately pushed her over the edge, culminating in the incident where she killed them both in the theater fire.

    Jane Winter

Another opera singer who purportedly replaced Passadou before her untimely death. She is actually Passadou's own servant, an unnamed AH-400 doll, who was illegally modified to resemble her.
  • Becoming the Mask: It is said that Jane Winter gradually becomes more and more like Passadou as she usurps her position as the lead singer. This is subverted, as AH-400 shows none of her master's delusions of grandeur even on her final moments.
  • Dub Name Change: On the EN server, her alias was changed to "Jane Doe". Considering she spent the remainder of her existence impersonating Passadou and was never given a name, a placeholder name for an unidentified person is apt.
  • Killed Off for Real: AH-400 neural cloud backups are only retained for 3 months. Since Spitfire and co. found her a whole year after the incident, it's far too late to bring her back.
  • Never Given a Name: As she is simply a lowly servant, neither Passadou nor Arla seemed to care to give her a name. Even TAC-50 keeps referring to her by her model number. The name Jane Winter was simply taken from Passadou's diary, implied to be a result of her delusions.
  • The Spook: Very little is known about Jane besides her name, and even her existence is disputed. Of course, given the truth, it is more likely that people simply overlooked her.
  • Undying Loyalty: She is willing to put up with Passadou's constant abuse, even going along with her insane plan, just because she loves her that much.

     Shadowless

Light's older sister. A news anchor for a German TV network.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Shadowless disapproves of Light following in the footsteps of their parents because it got them killed. She outlived him in the end.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Since the circumstances around Light's death are covered up to the extent where Light's own partners don't know what's going on, she never got to learn how her brother went out.

     Nele

Corneleia Schaefer

An employee of Galatea corporation and Lady Grey's laboratory assistant.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Nele holds Lady Grey on a very high pedestal, as it was her who inspired Nele to work as a researcher in the first place. The mere hint that Grey might be involved with some unsavory business greatly troubles her, which eventually prompted Nele to work for J as an informant.

SPOILER CHARACTERS

Warning: Spoilers Off applies to this section.

    90wish

A defunct underground research group, whose members included Persica, Lycoris and William.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: They had a nasty split when they had to decide between going public with their findings or remain in the dark. When information about them leaked to the public, they started to turn against eachother.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite having questionable motives and methods, 90wish drew the line at human experimentation
  • For Science!: Their most extreme members didn't really care about how their research could be used for evil or nefarious purposes.

    OGAS

A former Soviet neural network, appropriated by Lycoris to create the basis of Sangvis Ferri's AI protocols.
  • Body Snatcher: They have the ability to forcefully take over the hosts' body.
  • Contagious A.I.: The true purpose of Parapluie virus is to create additional OGAS instances by infecting other computer systems. A rather odd example as each copy isn't necessarily networked with each other. In fact, the OGAS instances housed by M4A1 and UMP45 respectively evolved into distinct characters.
  • Master Computer: OGAS's housing is a hulking monstrosity representative of supercomputers made during the infancy of computing.
  • Mechanical Lifeform: Of sorts. OGAS instances are essentially digital parasites, existing as a separate consciousness in a doll's digi-mind, but without a physical body of their own. They are able to propagate by infecting other dolls with the Parapluie virus and converting parts of their digi-mind into another OGAS instance.
  • My Skull Runneth Over: If the potential host cannot bear the massive processing load to create an OGAS instance, their digi-mind will melt down instead.
  • Symbiotic Possession: If the host's processing capability is high enough (or, conversely, if the OGAS instance isn't too complex), both the host and OGAS instance can develop a mutually beneficial relationship. This can be seen with M4A1 and Dandelion, as well as UMP45 and the fake UMP40.

    Dandelion

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/girls_frontline_isomer_black.png

Dandelion after taking over Isomer Black's body.

M4A1's personal OGAS.
  • All Your Powers Combined: The bonus level for Mirror Stage has her drawing power from the neural cloud data of dolls she stored during Polarized Light, giving her various buffs based on the chosen doll.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Dande's specialty in electronic warfare gives G&K a massive edge against superior enemy forces. However, this is the only way she can contribute to a fight. Should her hacking abilities are taken away (like how Paradeus jammed her at the climax of Mirror Stage), then she essentially becomes useless.
  • Digitized Hacker: Inverted. As M4A1's OGAS she displays extremely potent hacking abilities, far beyond what a specialized Electronic Warfare doll can possibly do, and she retains the same powers once obtains a physical form by hijacking Nimogen's body.
  • Floral Theme Naming: She compares OGAS instances like her as seeds of a flower blown by the wind, hence Dandelion.
  • The Gadfly: She spends a good part of Mirror Stage teasing AR-15 over M4's absence, even mimicking M4's voice just for the hell of it.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: The Commander lent her their coat to help her blend better as a G&K human staff. Justified as most of the personnel in the base are Dolls and she can selectively hide herself from their vision.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Fan translations previously render her name as Dandelai or Dandelei.
  • Support Party Member: Her playable appearance in Mirror Stage cannot fight enemies at all; she just dies instantly like just like how a HOC unit would. Instead, her role is to give powerful (and repeatable!) buffs to your echelons and debuffs to enemies, as well as revealing parts of the map through a radar scan.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: The fact that she arose from the Parapluie virus and inhabits the body of a Paradeus unit doesn't exactly endear her to the AR Team and G&K at large, which isn't helped by her overall callous attitude. Still, Dandelion possess abilities that proves to be very useful for the Commander, and Dandelion herself can't possibly achieve her goals without cooperating with G&K, leading to their uneasy alliance.

    Lunasia

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/girls_frontline_lunixya.png
The original basis of M4A1 and Elisa's neural cloud.
  • Artificial Human: One snippet in Shattered Connexion implies that she was one of many clones used to carry terror attacks. In addition, her brainwaves bear similarities to a doll's digi-mind.
  • Brain Uploading: Of sorts. While her mind isn't exactly copied 1:1, it does provide the framework of some of the most advanced AI in the setting.
  • Ethereal White Dress: In all of her appearances so far, she's always portrayed wearing a white dress, and though her physical body has long since deceased, the fact that pieces of her mind exist within M4A1, Elisa, and the Nytos means that she is still "alive" in a sense.
  • The Lost Lenore: Assuming that Dr. William is really her brother, then her death is what drove him to become the mastermind behind Paradeus today.
  • Multiple-Choice Past:
    • In Volume 1 of the Confidential Files, she and her parents were refugees seeking, along with other refugees, a better and safer place to live after the 3rd World War.
    • Volume 2 has a bit of contradiction, and part of it involves Persica and/or other 90wish members having met the family prior to WWIII.
    • Shattered Connexion has Persica stating that M4A1's neural cloud was made from a dead girl. Specifically, there was a string of attacks on Griffin-controlled areas carried by unusually aggressive children several years before. Persica took pity on one of them and had her brain scanned. Coincidentally, the attacks stopped soon after that. It's highly implied that these children were vat-grown clones manufactured by Paradeus.
    • Havel's conversation with Persica in Chapter 13 reveals that she is Lunasia von Oberstein, daughter of Rudolf von Oberstein, chief of the Max Planck Computational Science Institute. Persica and Lyco, having worked in the Institute prior to World War III, personally knew the girl and her brother, though she passed away from illness before the war ended.
  • Posthumous Character: Her death is what enabled the creation of M4A1 in the first place.
  • Spell My Name with an "S": Prior to the official translation rendering her name as Lunasia, she was also called Lunisia and Lunixya by the community.

    Stars and Pikes

Stars and Pikes

A top secret New Soviet Union weapon developed around the time of the Butterfly Incident.
  • Eldritch Abomination: They're essentially shoggoths, albeit ones far more powerful than any ever shown in the works of H. P. Lovecraft.
  • Fantastic Nuke: Each of these things is a city destroying weapon in its own right, to the point that nukes are the only viable weapon for fighting them. If even one were to reach a city, said city is lost.
  • Godzilla Threshold:
    • Are a living form of this - the devastation they are capable of unleashing is so great that nukes are the preferred method of dealing with them.
    • The potential results of KCCO acquiring these things are so disastrous that G&K are willing to face the military in open combat to stop them, even though this will get Griffin slaughtered.
  • Lost Technology: Collectible intel from Codename Bakery Girl reveals that the Pikes are this, being some form of GAVIRUL-created lifeform that fed on everything and excreted Collapse Fluid wherever it went. Most of what is known about them in-universe is derived from Cold War-era Soviet Russia research, although they never bothered to figure out what their true purpose was, content with simply using their destructive power against their enemies.
  • MacGuffin: They're the primary objective of KCCO in Polarized Light, as acquiring them would allow the New Soviet Union to declare World War IV without fear of losing due to their raw power.
  • Outside-Genre Foe: Sangvis Ferri, KCCO, and the Isomer/Paradeus all fit nicely into the Cyberpunk universe that Girls' Frontline is established as being. The ELID are from a Zombie Apocalypse story, but still not totally a surprise, given the backstory. These things, though? They're straight out of a Cosmic Horror Story.
  • Red Herring: The first mention of the Stars and Pikes in general is Belgrade's Pike Node in the Isomer event, which is just a small steel ball-shaped data storage device. Every faction that shows up during the event is fighting over its data (which, among other things, contains the locations of other Pike Nodes), making it come off as some sort of weapon for cyberattacks.

Girls' Frontline

2016 mobile strategy video game

2016 video game

Girls' Frontline (simplified Chinese: 少女前线; traditional Chinese: 少女前線; pinyin: Shàonǚ Qiánxiàn) is a mobilestrategy role-playing game for Android and iOS developed by China-based studio MICA Team, where players control echelons of android characters, known in-universe as T-Dolls, each carrying a distinctive real-world firearm.[2] The game was released in Mainland China on 20 May 2016,[3] in Hong Kong and Taiwan on 18 January 2017, and in South Korea on 30 June 2017.[4] The global English version was released on 8 May 2018, while the Japanese version was released on 1 August 2018 under the title Dolls Frontline (ドールズフロントライン) due to the Girls' Frontline trademark in Japan already being held by another registrant.[5]

The game is a prequel of another game developed by MICA Team, Codename: Bakery Girl, released in 2013.[6] Two television anime series based on Girls' Frontline have been produced,[7][8] and an official manga is serialised monthly.[9] A new anime television series by Asahi Production is set to premiere in 2022.

Gameplay[edit]

Top:Strategic map interface screenshot
Bottom:Combat interface screenshot

The gameplay involves the acquisition of T-Dolls through gacha game mechanics, which can then be assembled into squads known as echelons, and sent into battle to complete combat missions, simulations, or logistics support tasks.[2][10] The T-Dolls are female moe androids each specialising in and inspired by one real-world small arm, which are categorised into combat classes such as handguns, submachine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, machine guns and shotguns.

Missions consist of a turn-based strategy puzzle where the player directs echelons across a map consisting of linked nodes, with the goal of fulfilling pre-determined mission requirements, such as capturing an enemy command node or rescuing hostage units. Players are able to deploy, move and retreat echelons during their turn by expending action points, and likewise, the AI-controlled enemy team is able to move units during enemy turns. If a player's echelon meets an enemy unit on the same node, a combat sequence is initiated; combat is largely automated, and involves the player activating offensive and defensive skills specific to each T-Doll in real-time, along with moving individual T-Dolls across a formation consisting of a 3×3 square grid. The position of T-Dolls within the echelon's starting formation provide stat enhancements to other T-Dolls, and the individual stats and abilities of the T-Dolls altogether determine the outcome of the battle against the enemy team.[2][10] Some missions, known as night-time battles, will additionally handicap the player with a limit to the number of turns possible, in addition to a fog of war mechanic restricting visibility over the strategic map. A high-score based ranking map is unlocked at the end of every major in-game event, where players can compete for rewards based on their highest score relative to other players during the duration of the event.

Additional T-Dolls are acquired through random drops after battles, or through the construction component of the game, where the player inputs a desired allotment of in-game resources to construct new T-Dolls, and the amount of resources set affects the chance of different T-Dolls being constructed through the gacha mechanic. T-Doll stats can be complimented by equipment, which are also obtained via a gacha-based construction system.[2][10] Tactical fairies are non-combatant support units that can be added to echelons to provide status buffs to T-Dolls and either in-battle abilities or skills that can be used on the game map; in-universe, they are described as AI-equipped tactical drones.[11] Closer towards the end-game, the player will gain access to Heavy Ordnance Corps (HOC) units, which are dedicated fire support units such as mortar teams and anti-tank weapons that can be moved around the map to provide supporting fire to echelons in combat from a distance.[12] The end-game content also introduces the Protocol Assimilation system, where enemy Sangvis Ferri units can be captured, interrogated using electromagnetic pulse bursts, and then sent into battle once successfully assimilated.[13]

Main interface, featuring the T-Doll Ribeyrolles. Players may select any T-Doll or Kalina as their adjutant.

Outside of combat, the player is required to manage their supply of in-game resources, level up facilities within the base to gain economic bonuses or access to different features, and improve the combat stats and abilities of T-Dolls through skill training and other character-raising mechanics. Cosmetic items such as T-Doll costumes and furniture used to decorate the dormitories of T-Dolls are obtained through another separate token-based gacha system; decorating dormitories also provides an additional effect of raising T-Dolls' affection stats.[2][10] Additionally, some event-limited cosmetic items can also be purchased through real-world microtransactions. When a T-Doll's affection stat reaches 100, the player is able to give them an OATH ring, which may be purchased through the in-game shop. Their affection cap will increase to 150 and they will receive a slight stat boost.

Plot[edit]

The game is set in a war-torn future where tactical dolls, more commonly known as T-Dolls, are almost exclusively used for combat in place of humans, some having been repurposed from their previous life as civilian androids. The majority of the world is uninhabitable due to contamination from the Collapse Fluid, and much of humankind is dead. In 2062, the artificial intelligence of Sangvis Ferri spontaneously rebels, with their T-Dolls and robots killing their human masters and taking over nearby areas. In response, the private military company Grifon & Kryuger is hired to contain and eliminate Sangvis Ferri forces; the player assumes the role of a recently promoted G&K Commander.[2] The base storyline focuses on the adventures of this commander and the AR Team consisting of M4A1, ST AR-15, M4 SOPMOD II, M16A1, and RO635. Other main characters include the commander's logistics officer, Kalina, AK-12, AN-94, AK-15, RPK-16 and Angelia of Team DEFY and Team 404, made up of UMP45, UMP9, 416, and Gr G11.

Collaboration events[edit]

The game has had several collaboration events with other game companies. On 4 September 2018, the PlayStation 4 rhythm game DJMax Respect introduced three songs from Girls' Frontline as DLC,[14] while time-limited DJMax Respect mission events were added to the global release of Girls' Frontline in May 2020.[15]

A collaboration event for Honkai Gakuen took place in November 2017 for the Chinese release of Girls' Frontline, and featured characters from that game as guest T-Dolls.[16] On November 20, 2018, Girls' Frontline featured a crossover event with Arc System Works where Noel Vermillion and Elphelt Valentine from BlazBlue and Guilty Gear respectively would appear in the game as recruitable allies.[17] In 2019, the game featured a collaboration event with VA-11 HALL-A,[18] which included the addition of mission events and VA-11 HALL-A characters as obtainable T-Dolls.[19] In 2020, a collaboration event with the Gunslinger Girl franchise took place where 5 of the cyborgs were obtainable T-Dolls with added mission events and puzzles themed after the franchise.[20]

On January 2020, Girls' Frontline collaborated with Ubisoft's Tom Clancy's The Division where the T-Dolls of Griffin PMC join an online tournament of the Division game. The event also introduced two new characters to recruit; Agent 416 and Agent Vector, who are alternative universe versions of the characters HK416 and Vector that joined the Division.[21]

Development[edit]

MICA Team originally started as a dōjin circle consisting of three people, however during the development of Girls' Frontline, gradually expanded into a company of 117 employees. The game began as an inspiration work based on Kantai Collection, however with the premise of anthropomorphized warships replaced with that of firearms, based on the team's anticipations that similar moe anthropomorphism games would become popular in China.[23]

Japan and animated by Asahi Production was announced and is set to air sometime in 2022.[25] The series is directed by Shigeru Ueda, with Hideyuki Kurata handling series composition, Masaki Yamada designing characters, and Takashi Watanabe composing the music.[26][27] The opening theme song "BAD CANDY" is performed by yukaDD.

Manga[edit]

An official manga series titled Girls' Frontline: The Song of Dolls (ドールズフロントライン 人形之歌) and illustrated by Miharu is published online monthly in Chinese by Bilibili,[28] and serialized in Japanese within the Monthly Comic Rex.[9] There are also four official manga anthology volumes published by Dengeki Bunko titled Dolls Frontline Dengeki Comic Anthology (ドールズフロントライン 電撃コミックアンソロジー) consisting of one-shots by various manga artists,[9] and another manga anthology by Ichijinsha with four volumes titled Dolls Frontline Comic Anthology (ドールズフロントライン コミックアンソロジー) with its own separate collection of one-shot manga releases.[9]

Audio CDs[edit]

The theme song of the game, "Frontline!", is performed in Korean with vocals by Guriri and composition by M2U; the full track is included within the soundtrack CD bundled alongside the official artbook titled The Art Of Girls' Frontline Vol.1.[29] A second theme performed in English titled "What Am I Fighting For" features vocals by Akino[30] and is included within a 31-track original game soundtrack released on July 24, 2019.[31] The game's soundtrack also features guest tracks composed by Basiscape.[32][33] English and Japanese versions of "Frontline!" were later included in the second original soundtrack released on June 17, 2020; the limited edition release of this soundtrack also included a Blu-Ray for the Girls' Frontline Orchestra: Dolls with Lycoris radiata (Chinese: 人形与彼岸花) concert events which took place in Shanghai and Tokyo.[34]

A character songs collection entitled "ECHOES" was released on August 26, 2020.[35]

Reception[edit]

Cosplay of AA-12at the 30th Asian Animation Creation Exhibition

Girls' Frontline was the 3rd top grossing game by revenue on Google Play and the 5th top grossing game on the Apple App Store for the South Korean region in 2017.[36] The perception that the game doesn't force players to use pay-to-win microtransactions compared to other mobile games, along with its encouragement of player interaction during automatic battles, are often-cited reasons for the game's popularity in South Korea, where it is the first Chinese-developed game to be able to compete with domestically created rivals.[37][38]

Spin-off games and sequels[edit]

The tactical role-playing game Reverse Collapse: Code Name Bakery (Chinese: 逆向坍塌:面包房行动) developed by MICA Team and published by X.D. Network has been announced for Nintendo Switch, Microsoft Windows, and smartphone platforms. Set 30 years after in the same universe as Girls' Frontline, it is a remake of the original dōjin gameCode Name: Bakery Girl featuring new art, character voices, story, and game mechanics.[39]

A sequel titled Girls' Frontline II: Exile (Chinese: 少女前线2:追放) was announced in May 2020 for release on smartphone platforms, alongside two spin-off games titled Girls' Frontline: Glitch (Chinese: 少女前线:谲境) and Project Neural Cloud (Chinese: 云图). Exile will still follow the core design of strategic combat, however will introduce 3D modelling for the characters.[40]
