Solution 1. Delete Old Messages

Check coverage & signal strength

Test placing and receiving calls
At times your device can lose its connection to the network. To re-establish a connection, place a call from your phone to any number. You can call your own number (this will access your voicemail) or another number. If you are able to make a call successfully you will re-establish your connectivity to the network. Undelivered text messages will be delivered in the next 5-10 minutes.
If you have access to another phone, place a call to your number to ensure receiving calls functionality is working as well.
Restart your device
Restarting your device, similarly to restarting a computer, helps clear minor glitches often resolving various issues.
Turn your phone off and on again then attempt to place a call.

If people are getting your text messages but you’re not getting theirs then it’s kind of a one way conversation and that doesn’t work very well, or if you’re not receiving texts at all then that can be even more frustrating. You’re in luck though because there is a fix.
First of all the best news is that your phone is not broken. The chances that you need a replacement are slim to none. It’s just locating the actual cause of your issue that might take a little effort. It’s going to be either something on the phone itself causing issues or something on your wireless network provider’s end. First we’ll start with what you can do before getting into contacting your service provider.
Clean up your texts
Texts can add up pretty fast, if you save most of your text messages instead of deleting them then your phone might just be getting a little clogged up. Go through your SMS messages (Short Message Service, also referred to as text messages) and delete the ones you don’t need. After you clean up your messages power cycle (power off count to 10 then power it back on) and see if any texts start coming through (if texts don’t get delivered they can often be stored on your service providers network for a couple of days before getting deleted, that’s how you get texts even if your phone is powered off). Note: I recommend that you power off your phone at least once every couple of days for a healthier happier phone, plugging in your phone to charge for the night doesn’t count as being off. Think about the last time you powered your phone off and just let it rest for 5 min, if it’s been a while try to make it a habit.
Checking your apps
Applications can cause funny problems on smart phones; if you downloaded or installed an app for texting then it could certainly be that app causing issues. Especially if your phones software just got updated, your operating system might now be up to date but the app might not be. Check and see if there is a new version of the application available. If there is go ahead and update it and see if that helped. Note: you should be able to send a message to yourself in order for you to test your device and make sure it’s now both sending and receiving texts correctly.
If updating your apps didn’t help then I recommend you remove them. Start with any third party apps (applications that you downloaded yourself) that have to do with messaging then start removing any apps you downloaded around the time that your problem started.
Perform a reset
Once you have cleaned up your texts and your apps and if you’re still having issues then it might be something in the phone itself causing problems. This can be a number of things, a bug, a glitch, a virus (viruses are not too common on phones yet, but they can and do happen), or most likely something just picked up online.
As a sort of last resort to determine if it is an issue on the device itself you need to perform a Factory Data Reset. Don’t Panic it’s not as bad as it sounds, and chances are extremely high that it WILL fix your issue, you just need to backup all your information before actually proceeding with the reset. There are quite a few articles on this site that will walk you through how to backup and reset your type of phone (click here for specific instructions if you have an Android Smartphone). Most smart phones have automatic backups these days so the process of saving your information shouldn’t be too bad at all.
Looking at the Service
If you perform a factory data reset and wiped everything from your phone and you still cannot receive text messages then the issue is going to be to be something network related. This might include a bad SIM card or simply something on your service provider’s end. Not necessarily a down tower or anything like that, it could just be something related to your specific phone or account, something like a provisioning error. Note: if this started happening after an exchange or cross upgrade or regular upgrade then your information might just not be correct in their system.
Give your service provider (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc) a call and ask them if there is anything that they can see on their end that would be causing problems, such as any changes to the account, any holds, routing changes, forwarding options etc. also have them check and make sure that their system is communicating correctly with your specific phone.
If you get a good rep they should be able to locate the issue pretty quickly. I don’t want to get into too many details as to what they can do on their end, because you really have little to no control over it but let me advise that if/when you do call your Wireless Provider DON’T call them on the phone that’s having the issues, and make sure you have that phone with you in case they need to grab any important information from it. Depending on your service provider, they should be able to basically disconnect you and then reconnect you to their network to get a stronger connection and get your problem fixed. Note: I know that I mentioned power cycling earlier but, powering off your phone then powering it back on often connects you to the closest tower as well, and power cycling can be a good temp fix in many situations.
In any case you shouldn’t need to do an exchange or buy a replacement, if it was the antenna on the phone or a hardware issue like a physical piece on the phone that was malfunctioning then you wouldn’t be able to make or receive calls or do any texting for that matter. Do the backup then reset first and if that doesn’t work contact your wireless service provider and try and get a representative that knows what they are doing, not just a sales agent (they should be able to transfer you accordingly), so your wireless provider can get you up and running correctly again from their end, and then you should be good to go.

The Causes of Delayed or Missing Texts on Android
Text messaging has three components: the devices, the app, and the network. These components have multiple points of failure. The device may not be working properly, the network may not be sending or receiving messages, or the app may have a bug or other malfunction.
In some cases, these causes aren't easy to diagnose. For example, text messages may be delayed because the cellular network is overwhelmed with traffic, and messages are sent in the order received. Considering all these potential points of failure, it's best to start with the most common problem and work your way down the list.
How to Fix Androids Not Receiving Texts
If you don't receive texts on Android, and you know someone is sending them to you, these troubleshooting steps can help you clear up the issue. Before getting started, it's always a good idea to test your ability to receive texts from a few different people, if possible. That could yield some clues as to what the problem might be.
Check blocked numbers. If you know someone is sending you texts, but you're not receiving those texts, check to see if the number is blocked.
Check the reception. Mobile networks are sometimes unpredictable. If you see a few or no bars, step outside or find a higher place indoors. If you're in your home, you can use a signal booster to improve reception throughout the home.
Disable Airplane mode. Check to see if airplane mode is enabled, and once disabled, check your reception. Airplane mode shuts down every form of wireless communication, not only Wi-Fi.
Reboot the phone. Sometimes there are endless loops or other issues behind the scenes that you may be unable to diagnose but are easily solved with a reboot. This also installs any operating system updates the texting app may need.
Deregister iMessage. If you formerly used an iPhone, ask anyone who regularly texts with you with an iPhone to either disable iMessage or to send you a new text at your number, instead of contacting you from an old text thread. An iMessage thread doesn't translate over to Android.
Update Android. Install any outstanding operating system updates, even if an update doesn't seem relevant to the problem you experience. Some bug fixes and other repairs may address operations or features the texting app uses. Wait for any updates to finish before texting.
Update your preferred texting app. Updates often resolve obscure issues or bugs that may prevent your texts from sending.
Clear the text app's cache. Then, reboot the phone and restart the app.
Check your cellular provider's website. If nothing else works, look for any alerts or updates concerning network issues. Network problems may not be immediately obvious to end users, or may only affect certain functions.

If you see a red exclamation point
If you try to send a message and you see with an alert that says Not Delivered, follow these steps:
- Check your network connection.
- Tap , then tap Try Again.

If you see a green message bubble
If you see a green message bubble instead of a blue one, then that message was sent using MMS/SMS instead of iMessage. There are several reasons for this:
- The person that you sent the message to doesn't have an Apple device.
- iMessage is turned off on your device or on your recipient’s device. To check if iMessage is turned on for your device, go to Settings > Messages > iMessage.
- iMessage is temporarily unavailable on your device or on your recipient’s device.

If you receive messages on one device but not the other
If you have an iPhone and another iOS or iPadOS device, like an iPad, your iMessage settings might be set to receive and start messages from your Apple ID instead of your phone number. To check if your phone number is set to send and receive messages, go to Settings > Messages, and tap Send & Receive.
If you don't see your phone number, you can link your iPhone number to your Apple ID so you can send and receive iMessages from your phone number. You can also set up Text Message Forwarding so you can send and receive MMS and SMS messages on all of your Apple devices.
If you have issues with a group message
If you’re in a group message and stop receiving messages, check to see if you left the conversation. Open Messages and tap the group message. If you see a message that says you left the conversation, then either you left the conversation or you were removed from the group message. You can rejoin a group message only if someone in the group adds you.
To start a new group message:
- Open Messages and tap the Compose button .
- Enter the phone numbers or email addresses of your contacts.
- Type your message, then tap the Send button .
If you have other issues with a group message, you might need to delete the conversation and start a new one. To delete a group message:
- Open Messages and find the conversation that you want to delete.
- Swipe left over the conversation.
- Tap Delete.
When you delete a message, you can't recover it. If you want to save parts of a message, take a screenshot. To save an attachment in a message, tap the Download button . The photo or image will be saved to your Library in the Photos app.

What to do when your iPhone isn't receiving messages
- Your first step should be to restart your iPhone. Often, just turning it off and back on again can solve myriad problems with apps, network connections, and other technical glitches.
- Check your network connection to make sure that you have connectivity. If you are trying to send a traditional SMS message, you need to have a cellular signal, so make sure you see several bars of strength in the status at the top of the screen.
- If you want to send an iMessage to another iPhone, you need either a cellular signal or Wi-Fi, so again, make sure you have a solid connection with one of those.
- If you want to send an MMS message (a text message that contains photos, video, or audio), make sure MMS messaging is turned on. Make sure that your iPhone is configured to receive text messages
1. Start the Settings app.
2. Tap "Messages," then tap "Send & Receive."
3. In the "You can receive iMessages" section, your phone number should have a check mark beside it. If it's not checked, do that now and check to see if you can receive messages.
If your phone number isn't displayed there at all, you need to link your phone number to your Apple ID.
1. At the top of the screen, tap "Use your Apple ID for iMessage."
2. Sign into your Apple ID account using your email and password.
3. Your phone number should now be listed in the "You can receive iMessages to and reply from" section. Make sure it's checked and test again to make sure you can receive messages.
If this doesn't resolve the problem, it's probably a more complicated issue, and likely related to your cellular service. You should contact customer support at your cellular service provider to get additional assistance troubleshooting your issue.
