10 Things Most Players Missed In Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelists Of The Roses

Yu-Gi-Oh! is a collectible card franchise. That may sound unimpressive, but it's actually one of the most enduring series in that genre. Originating in Japan before expanding across the globe, the property has been going strong since 1996. The success stems from more than the cards, though, as the creators have produced various manga volumes, TV seasons, and even video games capitalizing on the concept.

Among the quirkier chapters in this story is a PS2 title, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelists of the Roses. It initially looks like any other entry, but this 2001 hit offers an unorthodox twist on not only the setting but the card game itself. That's where much of its complexity comes from. Even though the title is 20 years old, it still holds some hidden facts and gameplay secrets that many players have yet to find.

10 It's Based On Real Events

Some fans might think that Duelists of the Roses is just another in the long line of overdramatic titles for Yu-Gi-Oh! games. In reality, the game's so named because of the historical Wars of the Roses, where the Yorks and Lancasters fought for the English throne. Works like The White Queen and The White Princess have depicted this conflict, but using a trading card franchise is a first.

Why did they go this route? It's equally comical and confusing seeing Yami, the anime reincarnation of an Egyptian pharaoh, introduce himself as Henry VII. One might as well portray the Roman Empire with Pokémon. Et Tu, Pikachu?

9 It's Actually A Sequel

What the English title doesn't tell players is that it's actually a sequel. Specifically, it's a follow-up to the PS1 game, Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories. The characters in the story allude to this, but the name says otherwise.

Apparently, it was lost in translation, as the Japanese title has a "II" in it. They must not have thought international audiences were privy to this information. Considering the original takes place in Ancient Egypt, however, the sequel's Tudor-era setting might have confused people even more with the added context.

8 Rare Cards

This is par for the course. A game built on a trading card franchise would obviously make collecting those cards a big part of the experience. To triumph over the toughest duelists (or brag to their friends), players naturally want some of the rarest cards they can get their hands on.

Duelists of the Roses is no exception to this. The sheer number of monsters available is overwhelming. That's not even counting the countless others that can only be unlocked through fusions or other special conditions. Like the trading card game itself, attaining a preferred monster will likely take hours of grinding and a lot of luck. Just don't be too quick to get them in real life; many of them are probably banned for one reason or another.

7 Deck Leader Dialogue

Another aspect exclusive to Japanese versions is the Deck Leaders having a personality. Prior to duels, Deck Leaders would exchange dialogue to establish their relationship or taunt their opponents. It wasn't exactly a rivalry on the level of Yugi and Kaiba, but it was something. They would also offer advice whenever players lost a battle.

Unfortunately, this quirk is literally gone without comment in international copies. Boxes where this text used to appear are mysteriously empty. Maybe distributors were too lazy to translate. Perhaps they ran out of time. Whatever the case, it makes the Deck Leaders little more than blank slates.

6 Censorship

Yu-Gi-Oh is no stranger to censorship in the U.S. The 4Kids dub is notorious among fans for making the anime more family-friendly, often leading to funny moments where bad guys threaten the heroes with invisible guns.

That same mentality applies here. Despite religion playing a huge role in historical societies, particularly when it came to monarchies, Duelists of the Roses removes several visuals and references to Christianity. In addition, characters and monsters with risque outfits are covered up. These changes are presumably designed to make the game more accessible to a wider audience. Considering the sales, execs probably saw it as a good decision.

5 The Player's Name Determines Their Deck

No, players don't control Yugi or any of the other characters. Instead, at the start of the game, they must give their names and pick from a list of starter decks. That appears to be the end of it. What's not immediately clear is that the name determines the starter decks they can choose from.

Yes, the mysterious Simon McMooran uses the Rose Duelist's name to narrow down a huge batch of decks to a measly three. It'd be nice if he told players beforehand, but he must not think it's important. After all, it's only the single greatest tool they use to progress the story and win this royal war. Who cares?

4 Complimentary Cards

It may be a PS2 title, but Duelists of the Roses is still part of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, which means promoting the trading cards. Several cards came bundled with the game. Depending on the region, they could be anything from "Magnet Warrior" to "Dark Magician." It adds an extra incentive for players.

This isn't the only time a Yu-Gi-Oh! product has gone for this approach. Plenty of books, toys, and even McDonald's meals included cards for avid fans. The Pyramid of Light movie also gave exclusive cards to those who saw it in theaters. Because new copies of this game went out of production years ago, though, buyers probably won't get this bundle anymore.

3 The Real Bad Guy?

For years, an urban legend persisted among the Yu-Gi-Oh! fan base. Many thought that the true villain and real final boss of the game was Nitemare, or Card Majin. He was the big bad of Forbidden Memories, so it would make sense for him to affect the sequel in some way. Perhaps the localized versions of the game simply omitted him. A similar rumor surrounded the "real" winner of 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla.

In both cases, the legend turned out to be a hoax. The final boss of this Yu-Gi-Oh game is Manawyddan fab Llyr, an evil Welshman. On the upside, he does mention being Nitemare's brother. It's a small consolation, but it's better than nothing.

2 The Elusive Deck Master I

Players can challenge all kinds of opponents in the game's Custom Duel Mode. One enemy who proves elusive, however, is Deck Master I. The Immortal monsters would make this duel tough enough, but players can't even challenge this guy in the base game.

Gamers must first purchase a PocketStation and insert it into their PS2. Sounds simple, right? Well, this thing never released outside of Japan; players had to import it. Considering the time, money, and hassle, it's unlikely that many would-be duelists bothered seeking this Deck Master out.

1 Typos

For the final insult from translators, Duelists of the Roses comes with a few typos. Certain cards mislead players with their descriptions. For instance, "Raise Body Heat" supposedly boosts the power of Dragon and Reptile monsters, but it actually affects Dinosaur and Reptile cards. That's a screw-up worthy of the anime.

To be fair, everyone makes mistakes on occasion. Even the best games sometimes slip up in the subtitles or other text. However, blundering information that could lead to victory or defeat is a potentially crippling oversight. Once again, it shows the people in charge of localization really dropped the ball. At least the multitude of cards means that many duelists won't have to deal with these mistakes.

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses

2001 video game

Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of the Roses (遊戯王真デュエルモンスターズII 継承されし記憶, Yu-Gi-Oh! Shin Dyueru Monsutāzu Tsū Keishō Sareshi Kioku, lit. Yu-Gi-Oh! True Duel Monsters II Inherited Memories) is a video game based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! series, developed by Konami and released on PlayStation 2 format on September 6, 2001, in Japan. It is the first game from the series to be released on PlayStation 2 format.

Upon its release, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelists of Roses received mixed reviews from most game critics, with many critics praising the game for its graphic design and appeal, but criticizing its tedious gameplay and lack of fair challenge. It was a commercial success, among the best-selling PlayStation 2 games with over 1.4 million copies sold worldwide. In mid-2006, The Duelists of the Roses was named a PlayStation 2 Greatest Hits title.

Game Mechanics[edit]

The player views their hand and selects the "Hourglass of Courage" monster card.

Each duel in the game takes place on a 7×7 table, with each player commanding a "Deck Leader" that acts as the representation of their life points as well as the means through which cards are played from the hand—one card each turn can be placed on the board in a space adjacent to the deck leader. Each card on the field as well as the deck leader itself can be moved one horizontal or vertical space each turn. When two monster cards on the field collide with each other, they are flipped face-up, and a battle takes place in the same manner as the trading card game, with life points being subtracted appropriately. The duel ends when one player's life points are reduced to zero or when a player ends a turn with their deck leader completely surrounded by enemy monsters in their summoning areas. A duel also ends after 100 turns have elapsed, at which point the player with the most remaining life points is declared the winner.

Monsters can be "promoted" with use in duels. When monsters survive face-up on the field, destroy enemy monsters, or inflict life point damage to the opponent, they gain experience (monster experience is hidden). When a monster accumulates enough experience, it will be promoted to the next rank. A monster must be promoted at least once in order to act as a deck leader. Some deck leaders have special abilities based on their type and rank, which include raising the strength of nearby monsters, increasing life points by a small number each turn, or being able to move two spaces each turn instead of just one.

A deck of exactly 40 cards is required to duel. Each card in the game has a "deck cost", which is a value given to a card based on its strength. The game adds difficulty by forcing the player to have a lower overall deck cost than their opponent in order to duel that opponent, essentially forcing the player to have a weaker deck. Cards are obtained mainly through the "graveyard slots", which is a slot machine that appears after each win allowing the player to obtain cards from an opponent's deck that were sent to the graveyard during the duel. Cards can also be obtained using codes in the deck builder menu or through "reincarnation", which is where owned cards can be sacrificed to give three different cards of a slightly lower deck cost. Reincarnation becomes available once after every 5 completed duels, win or loss.

Each space on the 7x7 duel board has a certain terrain. Each type of monster has at least one favored terrain that gives that monster an extra 500 ATK and DEF bonus when engaged in battle on that terrain. Each type of monster also has at least one disfavored terrain that reduces the ATK and DEF of that monster by 500 points. There are also three special terrains: Labyrinth, which no cards are able to move onto except for a few monsters with special effects; crush, which instantly destroys any monster with 1500 or more ATK; and toon, which weakens every monster in the game except for toon monsters. Terrains include normal, forest, meadow, dark, sea, wasteland, mountain, toon, crush, and labyrinth.

Plot[edit]

The game is very loosely based on the real-world Wars of the Roses, a series of wars fought between the House of Lancaster and the House of York over control of England in the 15th century. Yami Yugi (Yugi Mutou in the English anime and the original Japanese adaptations) assumes the identity of the head of the Tudor dynasty, Henry Tudor, while Seto Kaiba represents the head of the Yorkist clan force as Christian Rosenkreuz. Other characters from the anime similarly assume the roles and names of others who featured in the conflict.

The player assumes control of the "Rose Duelist", who is summoned from an unknown time period to the year 1485 by a druid of the Lancastrian forces to assist them in defeating the Yorkists and regaining control of the throne. Both sides possess eight "rose cards" which have sorcerous powers. The Lancastrians wish to obtain the Yorkists' white rose cards because Seto's forces are using their power to create a barrier that protects their territory, while the Yorkists wish to obtain the Lancastrians' red rose cards because Seto needs all 16 rose cards together to attempt a forbidden "rose summoning" that would give the Yorkists great power. The Rose Duelist also needs all 16 cards together to conjure enough power to go back to their proper time period, and so the player is forced to pick a side.

If the Lancastrians are sided with, the Rose Duelist obtains the white rose cards by battling the Yorkist forces who are represented by antagonists from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series such as Maximillion Pegasus, Weevil Underwood, and Rex Raptor. The Rose Duelist finally defeats Seto for the last rose card at Stonehenge, but the victory is short-lived as Seto reveals that the power released from their duel (along with all of the rose cards brought to the site by the Rose Duelist) has fulfilled the requirements for the great summoning, and that he feigned allegiance to the Yorkists to force the Lancastrians to summon the Rose Duelist in the first place. Seto then summons Manawyddan fab Llyr, a powerful mythological figure known as the card guardian, who Seto plans to use to ensure his rule over England. The Rose Duelist defeats Manawyddan fab Llyr and banishes him from the time period, securing victory for the Lancastrians. The epilogue states that Yugi was crowned as the king of England and that it is unknown whether or not the Rose Duelist was ever returned to the time period whence they were summoned.

If the Yorkists are sided with, the Rose Duelist battles protagonists from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series such as Joey Wheeler, Téa Gardner, and Yugi himself. After all of the rose cards are obtained, Seto performs the rose summoning at Stonehenge, again summoning Manawyddan fab Llyr. This time, however, Manawyddan reveals himself to be the brother of Nitemare from Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories and is furious that they summoned his brother in Egypt then locked him away again. The Rose Duelist is forced to defeat Manawyddan fab Llyr to undo the summoning. After the duel, Seto informs the Rose Duelist that he has been long searching for a true Card Guardian because an ancestor of his entered into a pact with one long ago (again referencing Forbidden Memories). Seto leaves the Rose Duelist with his white rose pendant and his forces leave England, allowing the Lancastrians to gain control of the throne.

I turned my back on him and we continued the dance. Hugging his neck, I began to slowly lower myself and rub my ass and back against his penis. Yegor was a little embarrassed, but his cock did not think about embarrassment. I felt how he began to harden and increase clearly, although it breaks out and shows itself in all its glory.

I wanted this cable so crazy that without a drop of shame I invited him into the room to the house.
