Web Video / The TRY Channel
The TRY Channel launched on YouTube on April 30, ; with several "pre-release" videos in the three weeks before this as advertising. It grew out of a recurring series on the Facts channel, where a group of Irish people would film reaction videos about various (usually) non-Irish things.
The premise is simple: up to six different people per video, usually grouped into pairs, will spend each episode either eating, drinking, or watching another video, and the TRY video shows their reactions. If it involves food or drinks, there will be, usually, four rounds, representing four different flavors or varieties; a video reaction "shoot" usually involves the group watching one episode of a show (generally the first episode), or other Web Original.
Most of the TRY'ers are, (according to their Twitter bio's,) comedians, independent filmmakers, or otherwise involved in film/TV production already.

- Anachronic Order: Some of the pairings will film several segments, but they'll show up out of chronological order; since the other pairings in each video will change it will make it hard to tell when anything was filmed. (Usually the only clues to this happening will be comments under each YouTube video from one of the participants, or a 'later' pair will open a package which an 'earlier' pair had already taken food from.)
- And Your Reward Is Edible: The basic premise of any episode involving trying food; one had a pair being bribed into trying Reese's (which has peanut butter, they don't like it at all) with Heineken.
- Arc Words/Catchphrase:
- "That's class!" - Usually Lolsy
- "I don't like [cinnamon/peanut butter/chocolate/etc.]" - Various TRY'ers
- "Sláinte!" (Pronounced sounding often like "slancha", means "health" in Irish and Scottish Gaelic and a common drinking toast.) - Usually Leather Jacket Guy, but others have joined in.
- Berserk Button: Most TRY'ers have one food item (or flavor) they don't enjoy (e.g. Brian and cinnamon; Lolsy and chocolate), but to see fireworks well, don't have Dermot and peanut butter in the same room. Or Justine and anything with durian fruit.
- Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Blondes (examples: Anne, Eadoin, Nicole), brunettes (examples: Davey, Dermot, Justine) and redheads (examples: Lauren, Blaithin, Paul).
- Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: "Drink Roulette - Strongest Alcohol Edition"; it combines their previous "Strongest Alcohol" AND "Drink Roulette" episodes
- Call-Back: Several videos has a TRY'er bring up something that was said, or done, in a previous episode (with two, so far, getting a "Previously, on TRY" recap).

- Clip Show:
- The first 3 episodes are audio/clip shows; but these mainly served as advertising, with audio taken from some of the next few episodes as voiceovers.
- Most of the 'watching' videos give the impression that they're watching clip shows, due to not being able to fit commentary on full episodes into 10 minutes or less.
- Deadpan Snarker: Almost everyone has had a chance to shine at this; it's pretty much guaranteed that at least two out of each 6 will also make one of the others crack up by being this.
- Dissimile: Nicole smacks one out of the park when trying a Krispy Kreme Lotus Caramelized Biscoff donut.
Nicole: This is like my first lesbian kiss. Like, I'm confused but I love it.
Paul: That's an amazing analogy! (*both laugh*)
- Does Not Like Spam:
- Dermot has a notorious hatred of peanut butter.
- Justine heavily dislikes whiskey. Also, while no one on the channel likesdurian fruit, Justine's reaction to it is closer to outright trauma.
- Gilligan Cut/Smash Cut: Usually used in a form of 'question asked and answered', or 'statement/Instantly Proven Wrong'.
- Hilarious Outtakes: Three compilations of various outtakes and bloopers - mostly made while drunk - can be found on the channel. Some highlights include Ciara and Mary-Claire speculating about how much tail Jack Daniel got, Dermot and George doing Nicolas Cage impressions, Lolsy and Brian painting each other, and Dermot devolving into a borderline-unintelligible Midlands accent:

Dermot: M'turnin mor'Athlone?
Colin: What are you saying, Dermot?
Dermot: M'on da fookin' town.

- Ice-Cream Koan: Mary-Claire, tipsy off "" bourbon, busts out one of these.
We'll never know what it would have been like to have been born, or living in that time. But we can know what it would have tasted like, and that, my friends, is how history connects us. And also makes us forget, because if you drink too much, you'll have no history of the night before.
- It Is Pronounced Tropay: Some of the TRY'ers have Gaelic names, which to a non-Gaelic speaker do not look like they're pronounced at all. Some of these include Blaithin (pronounced "blah-heen"), Eadoin (pronounced "ay-deen") and Ciara (pronounced "keer-uh"). Averted with Clisare, which is her internet handle, her real name being Claire.
- The Lad-ette: Justine Stafford has a very stereotypically "guy" sense of humor, and often makes sex-related jokes which, while not being explicit (in that she rarely uses crude slang), are usually unexpected enough to break the TRY'er she's paired with. Her segments often devolve into giggling as the other person gets blindsided.
- Large Ham: Lampshaded in one video; George Fox pointed out, while disliking a particular item, that "some people [state] in the comments that we're overacting; we're not." Given that, they occasionally will bring some porcine production, to point out some feature that caught their attention. Or to make a joke.
- Never Gets Drunk: A Running Gag is Ciara O'Doherty's insane alcohol tolerance. It took four shots of the strongest absinthe they could get their hands on to make her only slightly giggly. Even in the second bourbon video, after four drinks, she looked totally unaffected. Averted for the rest of the cast back in the first bourbon video, complete with lampshading by George.
Oh, this video's gonna devolve so fast.
- Odd Couple: Part of the comedy is the pairing of vastly different personality types and observing their often dramatically different reactions to the same thing.
- Once per Episode: At the end of each episode, one of the pairs will (try to) make an appeal to the viewers to subscribe, and "hit the notification bell." (Sometime they fail to get it out; it depends on if they're making each other laugh too hard, or if it was a "drinking" video)
- One Steve Limit: Averted; there are two Justines and two Seans.
- Only One Name: Clisare definitely qualifies here (as noted above, it's her internet handle and not her real name).
- Only Known by Their Nickname:
- The Leather Jacket Guy; or at least it's a Screen Name to help separate private and public life (his real name is Max Byrne).
- The same goes for Irish Jesus (Paul Finglas).
- "Lolsy" is a nickname (her real name is Laura).
- Trademark Favorite Food:
- Mostly an Inverted Trope; watch enough videos and you'll learn that Dermot despises peanut butter (and George doesn't care for it, as well), Brian doesn't care for Cinnamon (and a few other items)
- On the flip side, several TRYers (particularly Dermot, Martin, Brian, and Ciara) love strong alcohol, especially whiskey. There were also episodes centered around red velvet treats and white chocolate snacks because they were sent as gifts to TRYers who particularly loved them (Dermot and Lolsy, respectively). Dermot even gets an extra bag's worth of stuff he doesn't have to share with anyone, to his great delight.
- Sincerity Mode: One video had four LGBT Tryers discuss their coming-out stories. As you might expect, it gets very emotional, and aside from some dry jokes here and there its very serious. Not a bad thing at all, though, and many comments praised the participants for their courage and offered support.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Lolsy is not amused when two of the "most disgusting shots" in a row have mayonnaise as an ingredient. She gets so upset her accent strengthens.

Each of the three longtime friends had been producing content on YouTube for years, and had noticed the rapid rise of people-trying-food videos, with individual YouTubers as well as outlets like BuzzFeed and Epicurious netting tens of millions of views on clips of folks trying everything from historical lunches to Australian snacks to banned foods.
They’d also noticed thatas they put it—“‘Irish People’ as a concept tended to do well on YouTube.” And though the people-trying-foods niche was growing fast, it also seemed to be growing around content made by and starring Irish folks.
So, the trio figured they’d fill the gap.
Enter The TRY Channel, which today publishes three videos a week that feature a rotating cast of more than 40 “TRYers.” In your typical TRY video, two or more of these daring adventurers are presented with a themed selection of foods and/or drinks. TRYers have sampled (and have sometimes been, shall we say, less than impressed by) spicy alcohols, exotic Fanta flavors, meat bars, death nuts, good old American cheesebugers, and much, much more.
Like many other creators, Regan, Connolly, Hughes, and the rest of the TRY team have dealt with significant challenges over the course of the pandemic. Despite that, theyve been adamant about sticking to their Monday/Wednesday/Friday upload schedulesomething theyve held to since the start of their channeland this steadiness has helped push the TRYers to more than one million subscribers.

Tubefilter: How does it feel to hit one million subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans?
The TRY Channel: It feels amazing! Its funny to look back at the day we went live with the channel, freaking out over our first subscribers. We had no idea where it would go from there! Its wonderful to have seen the channel grow from that point, and to see more and more people enjoy the content were putting out. Whether someone was our ninth or our nine hundred thousandth subscriber, we can never thank them enough for supporting the channel, and helping make it into what it is today.
Tubefilter: Tell us about The TRY Channel team! How many folks work on the channel? Who does what?
TTC: The TRY Channel was created by Colin Regan, Seán Connolly, Kellie Hughes, three friends with a number of years of YouTube experience on their own, who came together in to kick things off. Theyre involved in running the channel, producing the videos, and managing the social pages.
Of course, the channel wouldnt be anything without the TRYers, the people featured in the videos doing the actual tasting, drinking, testing and playing. We have a wonderful cast of 40+ people who give their honest, and often hilarious, views on whatever the topic of the day is. The TRY Channel really is a massive group effort, and were lucky to have such a great team.
Tubefilter: When and why did you start The TRY Channel? Did you know going in what kind of content you wanted to make, or did you discover that along the way?
TTC: We started the channel over three years ago, in April There had been a number of reaction-based channels up and running by that point, with varying degrees of success. Irish People as a concept tended to do well on YouTube, particularly with a more international audience. We noticed there was a gap in the market at that point for Irish People Try-style videos, so we went from there. We knew the style of content we wanted to go for, and over the years weve been able to expand it into different types of videos, series, and the likeand we want to grow that even further as time goes on.
Tubefilter: Walk us through the production process. How often does a video take from start to finish? What does the average day at The TRY Channel office look like?
TTC: We generally get a pair of TRYers in to film for a couple of hours at a time. From filming to editing to uploading, we can produce a video in a couple of days at this point. Of course, with running the channel and editing numerous videos at a time, this isnt an exact timeline, but that would be roughly how it works.
An average day at the TRY office wouldnt be too exciting outside of filming daysprimarily editing, scheduling, and general channel management! When filming, things can get a little bit messier. Therell be various foods, snacks, cocktail recipes, spicy challenges, and morebut its always a good bit of fun for producers and TRYers alike.
Tubefilter: Do you have any strategies for growing your audience? Have you noticed any particular kind of content getting more traction than others? Do you adjust what you film depending on how your viewers react?
TTC: Over the years, weve managed to grow our audience at a relatively steady pace, gaining spikes of traction when a video goes viral or a series of videos does particularly well. The one thing thats always worked for us is consistencywe upload three videos a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, at 9 p.m. GMT. We havent missed a single upload since we began, and weve always been on time. Combine that with each video ending with a joke-y message to new viewers asking them to subscribe, hit the bell, click all, and weve found that a large number of them will convert into regular viewers.
We do keep an eye on how our content is working with our subscribers, too. For example, we used to do a number of watching videos, where TRYers would comment on TV shows, YouTubers, or other video clips. These videos tended to not perform as well with our audienceand, in turn, YouTubes algorithmso we ended up phasing them out. This allowed us to then focus on stronger content, which benefitted the channel overall.
Tubefilter: What do you think makes The TRY Channel stand out amidst all the noise on YouTube?
TTC: We think that one of the things people like most about TRY is that you can throw on any one of our videos, and just have a bit of a laugh. No matter who you are or where youre from, everyone can enjoy people trying new drinks, foods, or experiences, and get some entertainment from their reactions. The key with our channel is having so many entertaining TRYers that therell always be something funny in every video. We often hear viewers telling us they go to watch one video, and end up watching five, eight, or ten in a rowwhich can only be a good thing!
Tubefilter: What does The TRY Channel get up to outside of YouTube? Do you have any merch, presences on other platforms, merch, etcetera?
TTC: We have presences on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, as well as our constantly evolving merch line. The merch items are always a fun addition, and the team we work with do a wonderful job executing the various designs and puns we pull together for the merch itself. We also have a wonderful community on Patreon, where we upload behind-the-scenes clips, bloopers, and extended cuts, as well as hosting regular production Q&As.
Tubefilter: What’s next for you? Any plans looking to the future?
TTC: Thats the big question! Like most channels, a lot of our future plans were put on pause back in March , but as time goes on, it looks like were getting back to some sense of normality at last.
We have a lot of plans in mind, particularly in terms of branching out TRY even further, whether this be in the form of podcasts or even touring a live stage show of sorts. Its still early days, but were really excited to see what the future holds for the TRY Channel, our TRYers, and all our viewers!
