Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak's coding school in Arizona may be forced to close

Arizona-based Woz U launched its online curriculum Thursday.

A computer coding school associated with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is in trouble with regulators and could close in Arizona.

The state board that oversees private colleges unanimously voted against renewing the license for Woz U, a college with in-person and online programs in Arizona that launched in

At the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education’s April 25 meeting, members peppered Woz U representatives with questions about its affiliations with a man who was involved with two other private colleges that recently closed.

Board members questioned the school’s financial status and its failure to seek the board’s permission to change its ownership, a requirement under Arizona law.

All told, the board had a litany of problems with Woz U and cited several Arizona laws and regulations that didn’t allow the board to renew the school’s license.

Woz U has until June 11 to ask for a formal administrative hearing to dispute the denial and address issues brought up by the board. If they don’t file an appeal, the school must stop operating that day.

As of November , the school reported it had 50 students in Arizona. 

In a statement released May 13, Woz U said it plans to appeal the board's decision to deny the license renewal, but also asserts that the school doesn't need a license to operate in Arizona.

"While our unique and transforming Education-as-a-Service (EaaS) business model does not rely on having an Arizona postsecondary license, we do not agree with the reasons the Board cited in their decision not to renew," Woz U's statement said.

Ties to Argosy, Art Institute failures

Most of the board’s trepidation with Woz U stemmed from two major private college closures in the past six months.

Argosy University abruptly closed in March after students did not receive financial aid stipends and the U.S. Department of Education said it wouldn’t allow the schools to continue participating in federal financial aid programs.

In December, the Art Institute of Phoenix closed and didn’t fulfill its obligations for a teachout, a plan where a closing college provides ways for students to complete their degrees with minimal disruption.

The failure of the two colleges, which were owned by Dream Center Education Holdings, has cost the government money, the board said in its denial letter to Woz U.

Brent Richardson was the CEO of Dream Center Education Holdings until January. He’s also a part-owner in Woz U and is listed as a member of Woz U’s board of managers, the board said in its letter.

The board was concerned with Woz U's "management capability," considering Richardson's involvement in Dream Center.

During the April 25 meeting, Richardson told board members he would sell his ownership stake in Woz U so that the school could continue. It was unclear if Richardson’s brother, who also worked for Dream Center and owned part of Woz U, would be willing to do the same.

The closures of Argosy and Art Institute both weren’t handled properly, the board letter says. Art Institute students were offered options to continue their degrees that ultimately did not come to fruition.

Student records turned over to the board’s custody for both schools were inaccurate, sometimes showing incorrect credit calculations or listing a student as having withdrawn despite the student having completed their degree and graduating, the board wrote.

Woz U said the board focused on the wrong issues when assessing its renewal application. 

"By focusing on a perceived ownership issue separate from Woz U’s business operations, the board overlooked our many accomplishments in advancing the careers of individuals to meet the ever-growing employment demands of Arizona’s technology industry," Woz U said in its statement. 

School had 'substantial net losses' over three years

But it wasn’t just Richardson’s involvement that the board took issue with.

One owner of Woz U, an LLC called Jochanger, isn’t a registered corporation in Arizona, and representatives from Woz U couldn’t tell the board where exactly the corporation is registered.

Woz U’s financial situation was also concerning, the board said, as the school had “substantial net losses” over the past three years.

In , the net loss was nearly $ million. In , it was $ million. 

Woz U also has changed its ownership without seeking the board's approval or informing the board in a timely manner. 

Two years of tumult for Woz U

Woz U hasn't had an easy entry into Arizona. 

In , when the school announced its opening in Scottsdale, it did not have the approval of the state board. The school said at the time that it didn't believe it needed a license in Arizona, but Woz U is now licensed by the state board.  

It offers programs in data science, cybersecurity and web development. All three programs have week options for $13, The web development track has a week, on-campus program for $13, 

In December , the board considered and dismissed a complaint over the school's quality after a report by CBS News claimed the school provided out-of-date lectures and had typos in coding materials.

Course materials sometimes just linked to Wikipedia pages, one student told CBS News. 

"I feel like this is a $13, e-book," the student said.

At the time, board staff said they had received emails about course curriculum issues, out-of-date lectures, unqualified mentors, tuition and fee discrepancies, and enrollment and recruiting practices that weren't in line with board requirements. 

But the board's complaint committee unanimously dismissed the complaint in December after receiving responses to the allegations from Woz U's chief operations officer, David Weems.

When Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, created Woz U last year, he attracted widespread publicity … and students for his training programs for technology careers.

But when CBS News recently spoke with students and employees, the stories were about typos in coding materials, "live lectures" that were prerecorded and out-of-date, and mentors widely seen as unqualified. The week program costs $13,, and some students are borrowing to enroll. One former student told CBS of the program, "I feel like this is a $13, ebook." An enrollment counselor said of his job: "It is drive, drive, drive the sales."

Wozniak released this statement: "The opinions expressed, and comments made during the story are matters that we do not take lightly. At Woz U, we devise our programs to teach all of our students the skill set to enter the technology industry workforce. We strive to provide a superior student experience, so it’s unfortunate to learn that we did not meet the expectations of some individuals. Steve Wozniak's Woz U may not give students the programming skills they need.

A number of former students and employees told CBS News the week online program has many problems that make it not worth the $13, tuition fee. Wozniak, who co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs in , launched the digital institute in

Among the complaints, former student Bill Duerr told CBS News that the course is like "a $13, e-book." The content reportedly has typos, "live lectures" are pre-recorded and outdated, student mentors lack qualifications, course content sometimes doesn't work or "just hyperlinks to Microsoft documents," or to Wikipedia. CBS News said it spoke with more than two dozen current and former Woz U students and employees. (Editors' note: CNET is owned by CBS.)

"The opinions expressed, and comments made during the CBS News story are matters that we do not take lightly," said Chris Coleman, president of Woz U, in an email statement. "Student feedback is vital to us as we have developed our programs throughout the first year of Woz U and as we continue to refine the curriculum for our programs to enhance the learning experience for students. We have proceeded to address concerns during the early-stages of the company and have rectified them with improvements to our course offerings."

Tim Mionske, an enrollment counselor responsible for sales, told CBS News, "It's drive, drive, drive the sales" for people working at Woz U. "Your job's on the line."

"I would want [Wozniak] to really look more into -- is this really education or is this really about profit?" he said.

Representatives for Wozniak didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Web Security module is intended to be an introduction to the key concepts of Web Security. Students will learn the mindset, discipline, and methods for securing a software project. This course is designed to be useful and accessible to application developers, QA testers, operations teams, and leaders who want to understand how to have conversations and make decisions about application security Final Project #1: Create a new AWS EC2 instance which will clone a web app from GitHub. Then, fork that repository and connect it to Travis CI. Finally, configure Travis CI to automatically deploy the application to EC2, and configure Nginx. Final Project #2: Develop a checklist for system emergencies. For each scenario, make sure to include specific instructions on how to respond for the chosen set of technologies. Final Group Project Description: This course combines many parts of software development to develop a full‐stack application as an Agile Project Team. Each student will participate in several roles, including making contributions to the code base. The team will have daily scrum meetings to cover tasks and will work separately to complete them. The final product will be presented at graduation before potential employers.

    The program is designed to teach you how to think like a programmer and how to learn. There's a LOT of content and although it is impossible to master it all in the 33 week duration, what you gain is a solid introduction to full stack development and the skills to keep learning after graduating.

    A bootcamp can't teach you everything (you CAN'T know everything- even senior level developers don't!) but I will say that this program teaches you how TO BE a software developer. It's not about memorizing syntax or skimming through the lessons as fast as you can. The assignments and final projects are challenging and you have to utilize all the resources you can to be successful. The workshops are awesome, the instructors are top-notch and the mentors make such a difference in your learning.

    After completing the program, it's just the beginning of your coding journey! There are plenty of success stories of graduates being hired in the industry (myself included). I continue to learn more everyday thanks to Woz U.

    I entered into this program with no prior programming experience so that is probably a big reason why I struggled the first couple of months.  My mentor, instructor, and ambassador wouldn’t let me quit even though I tried and they pushed me through the program.  The program took longer than expected because I repeated a couple of the harder courses but just a few weeks after presenting my final project I’m working as a Jr Developer.

    Data science is considered a new field  and its rate of change is exponential.  Woz U was established for this reason: to create an educational organaztion that can swiftly adapt and subdue the need for innovation to reliably provide outstanding members of the technology workforce.     Having the opportunity to learn a new concept as Data Scientist was of the best decisions ever! I started at WozU brand new to the concept, amazing methods, really advanced and first on knowledge for new and better solutions to our daily live in this era of ML and AI. I upskill my technical skills by learning from gathering of data, wrangling the data, analyzing its components and create visualizations for better models. It also teached me how to create different comparisons for almost any possible scenario that you can encounter to solve at work.     Please avoid this company at all cost! Within the first week I realized this school was nothing but bs. They steal curriculum from other free coding websites and sell it to you with absolutely no help learning the material at all. I asked multiple times to be removed school and the only response  I got was scare tactics and manipulation. I was told by many people there that the second I signed my name Iwas committed to the loan in FULL. So regardless if i quit the  first day or complete the course I would owe % of the loan. Which is not true! Later after finding my contract online re-reading my contract I could have but their financial person I spoke with dodged the question and even outright ignored phone calls and emails from me. After being scare and manipulate to just finish the course with the hopes I could get a decent job afterwards I finally graduated in and was told to contact the lady that help with finding jobs.  Which basically ended up me sending about 5 email  to her with NO response at all and after talking a supervisor Iwas told just to look on indeed. So here we are in the end off still no job a loan company harassing me for payment on a  $12, loan I have no way of ever paying.

    I love attending, and being apart of the Woz U class!! It has helped strengthen my skills, taught me a lot of coding, and developed my problem solving skills. The community is very helpful and kind. I have realized that sometimes I feel like there is a bit of disconnect between mentors and students, maybe it is just me. I sometimes feel as though I do not receive the help I need from my mentor and will instead have to reach out to fellow classmates. I am learning a lot and still succeeding despite all of this.

Woz Not Woz (Norman Doray \u0026 Arno Cost Tribute Remix)

It was okay. I think there are better options. The thing is, with coding, you'll be learning the same content no matter where you go, more or less. Not everything is a "get what you pay for" experience, at all. Not even close. Woz-u does explain to you Read More what you're doing, instead of just telling you what to do, which is all you might get from YouTube tutorials and such. Honestly, I don't see why one wouldn't just pick up a text-book. I guess the function of boot-camps are to distill text-book material into more hands-on, project-like, material, but I really think you could just get away with a couple text-books and some YouTube tutorials, and reading what entry-level positions are calling for on their descriptions.

One option is to go to community college for 2 years, and during that time get proficient in: Python, HTML/CSS, JavaScript, and SQL, in that order, through something like Codecedemy.com or Coursera.com. Work hard, and smart. Do the interview set of questions on LeetCode.com. Build a portfolio on GitHub. Upload projects for each language. You can find project ideas on google. Then, boom. In two years you've become more than qualified for any entry level position. This is what I'm up to now.

That being said, if you decide to sign up for Woz-U, you won't ultimately be wasting your money. I have not done any other certificate course so I can't compare. The fact that you can learn other languages they offer is a plus, and is something you will in fact need to do during your career. I don't think they offer Python for web development though. The fact that I couldn't sign up for the Data Science courses with my Web Dev membership was disappointing. They only teach you the basics, but that's really all you need before venturing out on your own. I do wish they gave you resources to excel, though. I wanted to get into more complex CSS and stuff. They didn't have job support when I signed up, but it looks like they do now, so it looks like the only resource you'll need besides Woz-U is LeetCode. Although it's good to use many more resources than these.

The Steve Wozniak endorsement is cheesy as hell, as he has no actual involvement in the company. NAMING a company after someone who's simply ENDORSING you is incredibly weird, and turns me off. If I could turn back time I'd just do the option I listed above, but I really do like the idea of Woz-U and IT CERTAINLY HELPED ME ENTER THE FIELD AND FIND SOMETHING THAT I THOROUGHLY ENJOY, possibly because of the inclusion of projects.
