Leveling in Shadowlands

Welcome to our DK leveling guide. Here you will find all you need to know to level up your DK efficiently. Leveling received a lot of changes in Shadowlands, which we have documented in our Shadowlands Leveling Changes page. In addition, we now have a revamped Leveling guide, complete with detailed information on XP, mounts, addons, consumables, tips, and more. We encourage to read it to increase your leveling speed even more.

Death Knights embody the fantasy of slow, feared harbingers, with absolute control over the undead, the possibility to unleash devastating frost attacks, or to sustain themselves on the life-force of enemies. Three radically different specializations await you, with very unique playstyles.

As one of the two available hero classes, Death Knights start with a level advantage over most other specs: instead of starting at level 1 (while not being an allied race), we start at level 8.

2.

Best Leveling Spec for Death Knights in Shadowlands

Solo players will typically find Frost better as a leveling spec due to its fast-paced, direct gameplay. Easier to deal damage, without the need to ramp or rely on DoTs, and, honestly, more sustainable as well.

Should you happen to be more of a dungeoneer, or prefer to pull very large number of mobs while levelling, Blood can also be a very decent option. As a tank specialization, they trade some of their damage for self-sustain, and this is something you can definitely take advantage of while grinding.

Starting Abilities for Death Knights Leveling in Shadowlands

Due to your level advantage over other classes, you will realistically spend very little time (and use very few abilities!) while not being able to pick a spec. We have highlighted them below.

You start with access to Rune Strike IconRune Strike, acting as your main rune spender, and Death Strike IconDeath Strike and Death Coil IconDeath Coil acting as your main RP spenders. Death and Decay IconDeath and Decay is also available for large groups of enemies, although Rune Strike IconRune Strike does not cleaver while inside it.

Simply burn runes with Rune Strike IconRune Strike and RP with Death Coil IconDeath Coil (or, for a bit of healing at a cost of some damage, Death Strike IconDeath Strike)

After you choose your spec, there are very few class-generic abilities that you will be pick and those that you do are largely irrelevant. So from that point on, simply head to one of your DK spec leveling guides (linked in the previous section) to continue.

4.

Best Heirloom Items for Death Knight Leveling in Shadowlands

Generally, heirloom choice is very dependent on the maximum possible level you have upgraded them for. Neither of the three specs particularly loves or hates a stat in particular. If in doubt, pick heirlooms with Haste, as this stat reduces your GCD, granting a feeling of speed and efficiency.

Shadowlands Heirlooms Guide

5.

Runeforge choice

When you get the option to Runeforge make sure you apply the Runeforge Rune of the Fallen Crusader IconRune of the Fallen Crusader. This comes with a 15% strength buff on a very generous uptime, and a heal whenever it procs. It is a very good all-around runeforge, and something you absolutely should not pass on.

If you are running a dual wield setup, make sure to apply Rune of Unending Thirst IconRune of Unending Thirst to your offhand weapon.

Do not forget! When you use Death Gate IconDeath Gate, using it again while inside Acherus teleports you to the nearest graveyard or instance portal from which you used Death Gate IconDeath Gate. There is rarely an excuse to wait, just go and affix whatever new weapon you get.

Lichborne: Leveling tips for death knights in Pandaria
Lichborne Leveling tips for death knights in Pandaria
Every week, WoW Insider brings you Lichborne for blood, frost, and unholy death knights. In the post-Cataclysm era, death knights are no longer the new kids on the block. Let's show the other classes how a hero class gets things done.

By the time you read this, Mists of Pandaria should be out and playable in Europe (coming soon to the US), and there's probably even a few of you who will have hit level 86 or 87. With the new talent and specialization system, I expect figuring out how to level will be easier than ever, if only because it's a lot more difficult to go wrong. Still, there's a few recommendations to make that may help you hit level 90 just a bit faster, and we'll go ahead and dispense some of that advice today. Note that all advice here is for leveling only, and may not apply to end game dungeon running or raiding.

Choosing your leveling spec

I would recommend you choose either two-handed frost or blood as your leveling spec. Blood is strong enough and has enough self-healing and emergency defense tools that will probably never die. That said, your DPS won't be as high as you might like. Frost will allow you to kill things faster but still gives you some decent survivability options in the form of Death Strike and, if you talent in to it, the Lichborne heal trick. If you do level as blood, make sure you are either queuing for dungeons as a tank, or have a secondary frost or unholy spec ready to switch to when you DPS a dungeon. Blood is still not great DPS, and your dungeon group will need better than what you can put out as blood.

While unholy can technically do the Lichborne heal trick too, it suffers from having Death Strike completely throw off its damage rotation, and it doesn't have as much clutch burst damage as unholy and frost. It also does relatively more damage via disease, and you'll be killing mobs too fast to make applying diseases worth it. You do get the advantage of the speed boost from Unholy Presence, which is a plus, but it'll still be much more challenging to level.

Doing damage

You won't really have to straight up pull off a picture perfect damage rotation to level. You'll mostly want to focus on burst damage. That means putting up diseases isn't as important. If you have Unholy Blight or Outbreak up, use it, if not, no sweat. Frost will probably want to throw out a Howling Blast for some extra frost damage and physical vulnerability, of course. Other than that, focus on getting your most damaging strikes up. That means Obliterate for two-handed frost, while blood should focus on spamming Heart Strike after using Death Strike to make unholy runes. If you're AoEing a lot of mobs, you'll mostly focus on spamming Howling Blast or Blood Boil, depending on your spec.

You will also want to use Death Grip smartly. If you can use Death Grip to avoid running to another mob, do it. Leveling is the time you use Death Grip with wild abandon. The presence you use will be the one with the same name as your chosen spec.

Grabbing gear

For the most part, your gear choices are easy-peasy. Mists of Pandaria primarily offers gear rewards based on your spec, so just take the strength gear, and you'll be good to go. If you're given a choice, blood should go for mastery and parry gear, while frost should focus on haste and mastery gear and unholy should grab haste and critical strike gear.

For the most part, you shouldn't worry about enchanting or gemming leveling gear, as you'll replace it too quickly for the money to be worth the relatively marginal power gain. One exception is Runeforging. It costs us nothing, so don't be afraid to cast Death Gate and apply Rune of the Fallen Crusader. That extra strength and healing is nothing to sneeze at.

The well glyphed death knight

While glyphs aren't really set up for extra DPS these days, some of them offer some key help for the leveling death knight. Glyph of Dark Succor is just the thing for chain-pulling quest mobs, whether you're blood or frost. If you're down a bit after killing a mob, don't sit and drink, pull the next one and apply death strike. Glyph of Unholy Command is just the thing for chain-pulling quest mobs. Grab it. I would also recommend Glyph of Path of Frost. Since you won't be able to fly until you hit level 90, having some insurance against long drops while you're exploring or heading to your next questing area will be useful..

Talents: Choose 'em and use 'em

While talent choices are a lot more free form this time around, there are some that will provide you will superior utility for the leveling process, but only if you use them correctly.

At Tier 1, you'll probably want to choose between either Roiling Blood or Unholy Blight. Roiling Blood may be useful for chain pulls as a blood or unholy death knight, since you can do damage and spread diseases while wasting as few runes as possible, but Unholy Blight provides the most versatility as a clutch disease application method when you can't spare the runes for other methods.

At Tier 2, Go for Lichborne. You'll want the Lichborne heal trick. Be sure to set up a macro like so:

#showtooltip Lichborne
/cast Lichborne
/cast [target=player] Death Coil

With this macro, you can press a single button over and over. The first press will cast Lichborne, and every other press after will heal you with Death Coil. If you can, hold off on using it until you have a lot of runic power saved up.

At Tier 3, go for Death's Advance. Having some extra speed to chase down monster or run between monsters means you level that much faster.

At Tier 4, I'd recommend Death Pact. It gives you the most healing bang for your buck. Death Siphon might also be useful, but, especially while leveling, it'll be less healing, and you'll give up a little damage while you use it. Still, it's less damage given up than Death Pact.

At Tier 5, you probably want to go for something simple. Playing rune tetris just isn't worth it for the leveling game. You can choose any of the 3 choices, really, but gaming them isn't worth your time. If you're looking to macro Blood Tap, try the following macro:

#showtooltip Rune Strike
/cast Blood Tap
/cast Rune Strike

Rune Strike, of course, is for blood death knights only. Replace Rune Strike with Frost Strike for frost or Death Coil for unholy. Then, use that macro as your default button press whenever you're spending runic power. Since Blood Tap isn't on the global cooldown, you'll use it automatically, no mess, no fuss.

Note that above I originally had the tier names listed by their traditional levels, that is, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75. Technically, however, death knights are slightly different in that we start at level 55 and get our talents over the next couple levels. As this is technically a level 85-90 leveling guide, it may not make one difference, but I have renamed the levels to "tiers" in order to avoid any confusion.

Frost Death Knight in Shadowlands

Shadowlands introduced 4 Covenants, new unique "factions" that are core to the Shadowlands experience. Which Covenant you join is one of the biggest decisions you can make in World of Warcraft.

Shadowlands also introduced an arsenal of legendary powers, but you can only have one at a time, and crafting them takes time and money, so choose wisely. Legendary powers are acquired from the new endgame activity Torghast, Sanctum of Domination, and other activities.

Death Knight Leveling

With the changes in Cataclysm, Death Knight leveling has changed significantly.
Blood dps while leveling is now much closer, meaning that a blood DK is viable for a leveling spec, but does not become the most optimal until you hit level 80 and get mastery. At that point, you will want to respec to gain advantage of Blood Shield

Introduction

This guide is meant to use leveling tools most efficiently.
To put it simply, any spec is viable for leveling in Cata, unlike in Wrath where unholy was the clear leader. This simply suggests a talent spec that is easiest and most efficient to level with in my opinion. This spec is frost, simply because of its simplicity and, of course On a Pale Horse. Frost has the second most OMG buttons of any spec (only blood has more, but that will be discussed later), namely Pillar of Frost and Hungering Cold in addition to all the other DK OMG buttons.

As I said, all specs are viable, and I will be posting a link to a finished leveling spec of each tree, but frost is in the lead up until level 80 by a long shot.

You may remember the days of unholy leveling reigning supreme, but those days are over. Unholy plays more like a raiding spec (and pvp once you hit high enough gear levels) as its damage is built up over time because of Shadow Infusion, which builds up like a combo point system.

Blood does not hit its peak until level 80 and Blood Shield. This allows the blood DK to charge on (almost) heedless to health as you get healed, and then get a shield, reducing incoming damage as you fight your way through packs of mobs. Until then, blood lags behind due to the naturally decreased damage of a tanking tree.

Talents/Glyphs

When you exit the DK starting zone, you will be level 58 and will have the effective talents of such. You will be wielding a 2-handed weapon, which is no problem, but if you prefer to dual-wield, you can do that as well with a little movement of talent points.

Up to 80

  • 2-handed weapons
  • Dual-Wield
  • Alternate Specs80-85

Blood

2-Handed Weapons

The finished talent spec will look like this:5/31/0

For simplicities sake, I will be putting points in order rather than at specific levels, as DKs do not gain talent points the normal way.

  1. Runic Power Mastery 3/3
  2. Icy Reach 2/2
  3. On a Pale Horse 2/2
  4. Annihilation 3/3
  5. Killing Machine 3/3
  6. Merciless Combat 2/2
  7. Pillar of Frost 1/1
  8. Improved Icy Talons 1/1
  9. Brittle Bones 2/2
  10. Rime 1/3
  11. Hungering Cold 1/1
  12. Improved Frost Presence 2/2
  13. Rime 3/3
  14. Might of the Frozen Wastes 2/2
  15. Chill of the Grave 2/2
  16. Howling Blast 1/1
  17. Blade Barrier 3/3
  18. Bladed Armor 2/3

At this point, you will be level 79. Once you hit 80, it becomes time to respec to Blood

Alternate Specs

While these specs are not optimal for leveling, they are viable. As pointed out in the introduction all talent trees are viable, but Frost is superior up to level 80. Out of the two alternate specs, I would recommend Blood more as it does not have the lack of burst damage that weakens the unholy tree in terms of leveling.

Blood: 34/2/0

Unholy:
0/1/35

Blood (80-85)

At level 80, go respec at Acherus to Blood. The reason behind this is explained in the introduction. Set up the following spec: 34/2/0 and then continue to add points as you go in the following order:

  1. Runic Power Mastery 3/3
  2. Virulence 3/3
  3. Epidemic 1/3

Finished spec looks like this: 34/3/4.

Glyphs

Prime

  1. Glyph of Obliterate
  2. Glyph of Howling Blast
  3. Glyph of Frost Strike

Major

  1. Glyph of Pestilence
  2. Glyph of Bone Shield
  3. Glyph of Blood Boil

Minor

  1. Glyph of Blood Tap
  2. Glyph of Horn of Winter
  3. Glyph of Path of Frost

Rotations?

With Cataclysm, leveling has changed drastically. Rotations as we know them no longer exist for DKs, either in a raiding environment or in the leveling experience. Raiding has been replaced entirely with a priority system, which is for another guide, and leveling has proven to go faster without diseases.

Frost

The goal of Frost is to get as many Obliterates out as possible, as it is your highest damaging attack. REMEMBER: If you
are low on health at any point, cast Death Strike to heal yourself.
Frost now works on a priority system as follows:

  1. If you have Freezing Fog and Killing Machine both up, use Howling Blast
  2. If Killing Machine only is up, use Obliterate
  3. If your RP is full, use Frost Strike
  4. Use Obliterate
  5. Use Frost Strike
  6. Use Blood Strike
  7. Use Plague Strike or Howling Blast to use runes generated through Runic Empowerment

Blood

Like frost, Blood DKs now work on a priority system, but a much simpler one. The object of blood is to take as little damage as possible, and often times in one on one fights with mobs you will end the fight with greater than 95% of your maximum health remaining. The true priority system for blood is as follows:

  1. Maximize uptime of Blood Shield
  2. Maximize uptime of Blade Barrier
  3. Use Plague Strike or Icy Touch to use runes generated through Runic Empowerment
  4. Use Death Coil

To put it simply, cast Death Strike and Heart Strike as much as possible while casting Death Coil in times between your runes being active. Then whenever a random frost or unholy rune is generated, if it is a death rune use Heart Strike if not, use Plague Strike or Icy Touch.

Death Knights have been drastically changed with the cataclysm, with a new rune system overhaul and many new abilities and a change from rotations to priorities. We have seen the removal of the “Death Knight Experiment” with all three trees being able to tank and dps, to having a dedicated tanking tree in Cata. Death Knights have been through thick and thin so far, and hopefully this guide can help new or returning DKs to level as quickly as possible.

Leveling frost dk

I enter with difficulty, but relentlessly. My flesh hurts as usual. My beloved wriggles and screams.

10 to 50 in 3hrs and 33 minutes! Alliance Death Knight - Insane solo speedrun!

Suddenly he laughed, knocking her over on her back. Gently touching her mouth with his lips, imprisoned his hands in sweet captivity. After giving each other a kiss, they fell asleep. The master was lying on a bench on his stomach, and two girls, Natashka and Malashka, were also naked, stood on the sides.
