In this article, we present you with the best gems and enchants that you can get for a Shadow Priest in WoW , including profession-specific perks. We also list the best consumables: food, flasks, and potions.
Make sure to check our Gear Optimisation Guide, which serves as a support guide for this article. The other articles of our Shadow Priest guide can be accessed from the table of content on the left.
Note that Extra Enchantments can be applied to an item in addition to a Main Enchantment.
You should always be eating food that provides 90 intellect, whether this is in the form of:
Your flask should be a Flask of the Draconic Mind.
During the encounter, your best choice for a potion will be Volcanic Potion.
Choosing a profession for your Shadow Priest can impact your raid performance. As a rule, you should shy away from gathering professions (with the exception of Herbalism), which leaves the following viable professions for raiding:
With the exception of Tailoring, which is currently the best profession for casters, you will generally prefer a passive Intellect bonus over any of the temporary gains. Indeed, Lifeblood provides Haste Rating, which, as a Shadow Priest, is much less valuable than any Intellect bonus. Synapse Springs is good, but if you already have an on-use trinket, the two effects cannot be used simultaneously and you will prefer that of your trinket, which is, most likely, a lot more powerful than that of Synapse Springs.

1. Gems↑top
If your item level is higher than , and your raid-buffed Spellpower isgreater than 30,, you should gem as the table below suggests. If you do notmeet these requirements, we recommend gems for you below the table.
Note that if your item level is below , or if you do not have at least30, raid-buffed Spellpower, Haste Rating is not as desirable to you. Youshould, instead, use Brilliant Primordial Ruby in red and prismaticsockets,
Reckless Vermilion Onyx in yellow sockets, and
Purified Imperial Amethyst in blue sockets. If you are having issuesreaching the hit cap through reforging alone, you can use pure spirit/hit gemsin blue sockets.
2. Enchants↑top

Food
You should always eat food that gives you Intellect. You will be granted:

Blacksmithing and Engineering is currently the best professioncombination for Shadow Priests. Blacksmithing provides a HasteRating increase higher than that offered by any other profession.
Engineering should be your second profession, as itprovides you with Synapse Springs, which you canline up with cooldowns and trinket procs.

Best Enchants for Shadow Priest
Here we will give you a complete list of all the enchants you will want as a Shadow Priest.
2.
Shadow Priest Gemming
Here we will give you all of the gems you will want to use as a Shadow Priest. Typically you will want to ignore socket bonuses unless you can get them with one split gem and they offer a strong stat such as Bonus Healing.
Swift Starfire Diamond is the better option of the meta gems currently, giving you some Spell Damage and minor movement speed. Make sure you change your boot enchant accordingly as the movement speed increase does not stack and, of course, make sure you meet the requirements for your meta gem to be active.
The Runed Living Ruby will be the gem that you should be putting into most gem sockets, even if the colors do not match. Meanwhile, use
Veiled Noble Topaz to unlock any socket bonuses that require a yellow gem, or your meta. If you do not need Spell Hit rating, you can use
Potent Noble Topaz instead.
3.
Shadow Priest Complete Consumable List
Here we will list off all Shadow Priest consumables by category and their uses. Shadow Priests consumables are fairly straightforward without many alternatives.
Flasks
Typically a flask is not recommended for Shadow Priests, as the stats gained from elixirs are much stronger. A flask can be a great alternative, however, if the price is much cheaper or you are fighting easier content. Remember that flask effects also persist through death.
Flask of Pure Death — This is best option for you when you want a flask, offering the highest Spell Power possible.
Flask of Supreme Power — These are slightly worse than your best option, but might cost much less on your server.
Food Buff
All 3 of these options offer the same amount of Spell Power. Pick whichever one you can get most easily or is cheapest.
Blackened Basilisk
Crunchy Serpent
Poached Bluefish
Potions
Destruction Potion — This potion is great for short fights when Mana is not a concern.
Super Mana Potion — You will need these potions for longer fights.
Miscellaneous
4.
Profession Consumables
Here we will list the unique consumables provided by each individual profession.
Enchanting
Superior Wizard Oil — This weapon oil provides a whopping 42 Spell Damage increase; make sure to always keep this up.
First Aid
Heavy Netherweave Bandage — These are great for some Mana-free healing. Help your healers out whenever possible!
Herbalism
Nightmare Seed — This is a great way to help you survive a situation where you know there is a large amount of incoming damage.

Enchants, Gems and Consumables for Shadow Priest
This section specifically covers the optimal gems, enchants, food, and flasks to use for your character. To get a more detailed rundown of the different stats for Shadow Priest, please visit our dedicated Stats page.
Shadow Priest Stat Priority
2.
Best Gems for Shadow Priest
You should use Quick Jewel Cluster in all of your sockets.
You can purchase extra sockets to place into any item that does not have one. For items acquired in Patch or Season 2 you need to get reputation with The Archivist's Codex up to Tier 6. Once you get to Tier 6 you can purchase Alloy-Warping Facetor to socket new items.
If you are more of a visual learner, you can watch the video guide version of this guide instead. I would suggest reading this side-by-side during the video to absorb the information the best. A full video will be published soon, but for now the survival guide gives you all the info you need for this patch.

Information about Domination Shards can be found on our Gear page:

4.
Best Enchants for Shadow Priest
Enchants and gems will change based on your current gear, make sure you sim yourself regularly to get an idea of what to use for the various situations.
For the weapon enchant, you can choose to use Enchant Weapon - Celestial Guidance for raiding as well for the better overall performance, just know that as you get more gear
Enchant Weapon - Sinful Revelation will provide more single-target damage. The gap between the two on AoE is typically much larger than the gap you would see by using the wrong one in single target.

Consumables for Shadow Priest
Best Flasks and Potions for Shadow
Once you start getting to around item level you will find that using Potion of Spectral Intellect in all forms of content will be your best potion. At lower item levels
Potion of Phantom Fire is a competitive option for single target.
Spectral Flask of Power is our flask of choice.
For Healing Potions, use Spiritual Healing Potion alongside a
Healthstone if you have one at hand. Healthstones and Healing Potions can be used alongside each other.
Best Food for Shadow
For all cases where you want to food buff, you should always use the Feast of Gluttonous Hedonism. If you are just doing solo content or do not have any feasts on-hand, you can substitute with
Tenebrous Crown Roast Aspic or
Iridescent Ravioli with Apple Sauce.
Weapon Oils for Shadow
For your temporary weapon oil you should always use Shadowcore Oil on your weapon at all times.
Augment Runes for Shadow
Currently, there is only a single Augment Rune in the game in the form of Veiled Augment Rune, which you should use whenever possible for the extra Intellect.
Armor Kits for Shadow
If you want to fully maximize your character, you can opt to use the new Shadowlands Armor Kits as well. By using Heavy Desolate Armor Kit, or the cheaper
Desolate Armor Kit, you can slightly increase your total health pool of your character. In practice, you will not greatly notice this, but it is technically maximizing your consumables. In practice, this will only give you about 1% or less of your current health pool.

Shadow Priest Stats, Races & Consumables guide
Stat Priorities
Stat Ranking
Always try to simulate your character using raidbots or the simulationcraft program to get personalized results.
Single target / Multi target:
Int > Haste > Mastery > Crit > Versatility
Stat Outline
Intellect: Increases the magnitude of your spells.
Critical Strike: Chance for spells to do double damage. Shadowy Apparitions spawns an extra ghost when you crit with Mind Blast, Void Bolt or Devouring Plague and Hungering Void extends by an additional second when Void Bolt crits.
Haste: Increases spell casting and dot tick speed, reduces the cooldown of some spells and lowers the global cooldown.
Mastery: Increases your damage on the target for each Shadow Word: Pain, Vampiric Touch and Devouring Plague effect that you have active on the target. During Voidform all targets receive the maximum effect.
Versatility: Increases damage and healing done and reduces damage taken.
The best way to calculate stat priorities for your character is to "sim" your character
Find out how to simRaces
The differences between the races are very small so you should play whatever race you like the most.
Horde:
Goblin: While the 1% haste you gain has value, the biggest reason you should pick a Goblin is due to Rocket Jump. The added mobility is a lifesaver in many situations.
Alliance:
Mechagnome/Void Elf: Mechagnome sims the highest, but for the same reason Goblin is so good for Horde, the added mobility from Void Elf will give you more value on average.
Enchants
Chest: Enchant Chest - Eternal Stats
Bracers:Eternal Intellect
Rings:Tenet of Hasteor Enchant Ring - Tenent of Mastery
Weapon:Enchant Weapon - Sinful Revelation (ST) orEnchant Weapon - Celestial Guidance (Cleave/M+)
Note: The better gear you have, the stronger Celestial Guidance becomes, so don't be surprised if it starts to outsim Sinful Revelation even on ST.
Gems
Haste:Quick Jewel Clusteror Masterful Jewel Cluster
Consumables
Weapon:Shadowcore Oil
Chest:Heavy Desolate Armor Kit
Food:Feast of Gluttonous Hedonism (Tenebrous Crown Roast Aspic if there is no feast)
Flask:Spectral Flask of Power
Damage potion:Potion of Spectral Intellect

Re: shadow priest gems
2 blue gems for the meta gem, sp/spirit
sp/haste in yellow slots were the bonus is bigger than 2 haste; 2 sp or 3 crit
rest of them 23sp
Dubbleslots are a bit more tricky, but try to gem 23sp as much as you can in red and blue slots and use those 2 blue gems to get as much bonus as possible

Re: shadow priest gems
In most circumstances it's benefical to gem for the socket bonus using Purified Dreadstones, Runed Cardinal Rubies & Reckless Ametrines. The only time this isn't true is for single, double or tripple blue sockets in the case of a single blue the difference is usually PP, its not until double or tripple that it starts to amount to something significant.Originally Posted by eErike

So if you don't want to understand PP or work things out, simply gemming for socket bonuses (assuming its a dps socket bonus) isn't the worst thing to do. Other than that, go to shadowpriest.com and do some reading in the BRGA thread.

And for so long, when is the socketbonus for single blues worth it with a Purified Dreadstone? as patch changed the numbers of value of spirit (for ex. 15spi on chest now beeing the best chest enchant etc)

Re: shadow priest gems
pretty sure the socket bonus has to be +9 sp for it to be worth more than the benefit of one runed cardinal (23sp)Originally Posted by eErike

if the bonus is 7sp and socket is blue, you get 23sp from a runed or around for a purple (sp/spirit gem + bonus)
with a 9sp bonus and blue socket you get around sp from it

Yes, that is how it works.

The PP value thread is also in the BiS thread, so here: http://shadowpriest.com/viewtopic.ph=&start=0Originally Posted by eErike

Also, 10 spirit x ~50% conversion of SP = 5 SP, so the end total for Purified gem is 17 SP and 10 Spi.Originally Posted by greysin

Re: shadow priest gems
Also, 10 spirit x ~50% conversion of SP = 5 SP, so the end total for Purified gem is 17 SP and 10 Spi.It's listed as which is 59%. This is all based on a few factors.
It's only 59% if you have:
Glyph of Shadow
Improved Spirit Tap
Without those two, it's just 20%.

pretty much every spriest would have those.Originally Posted by Tablemaker

i hope not! :-) but new people to the class may not know.
gemming spriest is simple though. Chaotic meta, 2 purified in blues where you can get a decent socket bonus (spell power or haste). reckless in yellows where socket bonus is sp or haste especially. Runed cards in everything else.

IST, I can understand(although you shouldn't be running without it), but with the lack of actual dps glyphs, you're a horrible spriest if you do not have Glyph of Shadows. That's all well and good. It's still good practice to point out to people how the numbers come out. You shouldn't just say "Spirit is worth SP" without telling them what components help them get that.reckless in yellows where socket bonus is sp or haste especially. Runed cards in everything else.Kind of. Reckless is Runed is You can debate that putting Reckless with a +4 Spirit bonus will benefit. Hell, even a +2 Spirit. I would pretty much put Reckless in any single yellow socket for the bonus. Crit, Spi, Haste and SP bonus' will % of the time provide you with an extra 1 PP.
, PM#16

Re: shadow priest gems
Because the general theory is not good enough for most players as we dont have access to BiS gear all the time, It makes the most sense to gem according to your toon and identify the optimal gear/gem/enchanting that needs to take place.
There are a couple of great tools. If you are having trouble and would rather not link your armory, use RAWR. It's a fantastic tool:

This is actually bad advice and while it will be true some of the time shows very little insight in to optimising your gear.Originally Posted by redrage

gemming spriest is simple though. Chaotic meta, 2 purified in blues where you can get a decent socket bonus (spell power or haste). reckless in yellows where socket bonus is sp or haste especially. Runed cards in everything else.
There are 3 gems you will use, those being
Runed Cardinal Ruby (23 SP) worth 23 PP
Reckless Ametrine (12 SP & 10 haste) worth 22 PP
Purified Dreadstone (12 SP & 10 Spirit) worth PP
The way to work out what gems to use, work out what PP you would gain by using pure red gems, so 1 socket = 23, 2 sockets = 46, 3 sockets = Then see if gemming for the socket bonus can get you a figure that is higher using the 3 gems above, if so, thats what you use.
As I previously stated, in % of circumstances gemming for the socket bonus will be superior than flat red gems. The only time this won't be true is for single, double or tripple blue socket items. In which case a single blue socket that will have a 5 sp socket bonus is only less than gemming for pure SP. I suggest losing PP for some regen is worth while. It only becomes a signficant number when u have 2 blue sockets for 7 sp or 3 for 9 sp that the loss is too great to not gem for. Any other combination of sockets will generally give you a better PP figure than pure SP.

And, never seen tho, if there is a yellow socket with a 4spi bonus you should take recless, not only cuzz the PP sais so but also cuzz extra stats is allways good ;PApparently, reading the whole thread and understand it is overestimated.Originally Posted by Direshadow
