3 Best Moving Container Companies

Here are the top moving container companies you can call today:

PODS: Best Overall

We pick PODS as our Best Overall choice in not only moving container services, but for moving in general. You are able to execute either a local or long distance move with PODS, and for an extra cost, you can obtain more traditional, full-service features like loading and unloading assistance. PODS can also utilize any of its storage facilities for up to 30 days to make sure you get your belongings delivered to your new residence exactly when you want them.

Pros:

  • Various levels of insurance coverage available
  • Highly transparent about pricing
  • Available in all 50 states

Cons:

  • Packing and unloading only available via third-party
  • Pricing can be a bit higher than competitors
  • Positive customer reviews vary according to location

Services and Cost

PODS functions in a similar manner to most moving container companies. The company offers to deliver your choice of moving containers to your residence, where you then have an unlimited amount of time to load up your moving pods. Once finished, you tell PODS when to pick up your containers and when they should be delivered to your new home. You can also receive packing and unpacking services through third-party providers that PODS refers you to. One standout feature is that if you have to use one of PODS' storage facilities, it is already included in your cost. Another great feature for PODS is that you can order as many moving containers as you need. PODS offers three different moving containers:

  • 7-Foot Container: Ideal for studio apartment moves; packs areas under 500 sq. ft.; similar to a 10' moving truck
  • 12-Foot Container: Small apartment or 2-3 room moves; packs a 500-800 sq. ft. space; similar to a 15' moving truck
  • 16-Foot Container: Homes with 3-4 rooms; packs approximately 1,200 sq. ft,; similar to a 20' moving truck

PODS has some information on its website for what its cost might be for your move. For a long-distance move, the company's website estimates it would cost from $1,237 to $2,999 using only storage pods. For a full-service move, the company estimates it would cost $4,890. Some factors that PODS considers when pricing a move include:

  • Which container size you get
  • How many containers you order
  • Distance of your move
  • Location of your original residence

To get a better idea of what a PODS move might cost you, we suggest you get a free quote from the company's website.

State Availability

PODS' website states it is able to assist in moving to any location in the United States. Not every state has a physical PODS location though. You can still receive its services in these states, there is just not a physical location to visit. The states that PODS does not have a physical location in are:

  • Alaska
  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

Our Take on PODS

PODS is an excellent option, and our Reviews Team suggests it for any move. You receive transparent pricing with PODS, which many companies do not provide upfront. You still have the option for some full-service features, and PODS provides customers with an incredible amount of flexibility.

We recommend that you visit PODS toget a free quote and see what kind of services they can provide for your move.

U-PACK: Best Flexibility

U-Pack offers many of the same services as PODS, while also maintaining a sense of flexibility. Similar to PODS, U-Pack also can refer you to third-party providers of moving services like packing and unpacking. U-Pack also provides excellent customer satisfaction, as evidenced in its A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Pros:

  • 240 locations across all 50 states
  • Insures every move with liability coverage
  • Only pay for the space that you use

Cons:

  • Does not utilize an app to track your moving containers
  • Packing and unpacking must be purchased through third-party provider
  • Does not assist with local moving

Services and Cost

You receive DIY, door-to-door moving services for long-distance moving when you use U-Pack. The company offers services similar to PODS in that it drops off a moving container or trailer at your residence, you then load it up with your belongings and after you are done, U-Pack's driver will transport your container for you. Once your container arrives, you will then unload the container at your new home. U-Pack offers two different types of equipment:

  • ReloCube: A small storage container that is ideal for smaller moves. It is small enough to fit in a regular parking space making it a great option for apartment moves.
  • Moving trailers: This option works better for larger moves, such as a house. It can easily be parked in a driveway.

With U-Pack, you pay for only what you use because your cost is based on either the linear footage you use in a moving trailer or the number of ReloCubes you use. The overall cost will also include additional expenses such as the driver's hours, amount of fuel used, the distance of our move, and taxes.

For a 2-bedroom home/apartment moving from Atlanta, Georgia to Austin, Texas in 1-2 months, U-Pack estimated a cost of $1,718 for the move, including fuel and taxes.

We suggest you get a free quote from U-Pack to get a better understanding of what your overall cost with the company might be.

State Availability

U-Pack is available everywhere in the United States of America, including Puerto Rico.

Our Take on U-Pack

U-Pack features great flexibility for anyone concerned about fitting a move into their busy schedule. Given that U-Pack also allows you to control when and where your moving container goes, it is a wonderful company for anyone that requires that sense of flexibility and control.

What is the cheapest moving container company?

U-Pack's ReloCubes are some of the cheapest among moving containers. PODS also offers some of the lowest costs.

Like other storage units, portable storage containers should not be filled with perishables, toxins, or flammables.

Do moving containers damage driveways?

Although it can potentially happen, it is rare for a moving container to cause damage to a driveway or parking spot. Most companies use certified professionals that can help place a moving container without any damage occurring.

The company also features the largest number of storage facilities compared to other companies on this list.

Pros & Cons

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of PODS:

✔ Available in all 50 states

✔ Offers a variety of insurance options

✘ Bookings must be finalized over the phone
✘ Bookings are required far in advance as time slots fill up often

Services

PODS differentiates itself from other moving container companies by giving customers a generous 30-day window to load and unload their belongings from their containers. Extending your PODS rental for an additional 30 days is roughly $100 cheaper than 1-800-PACK-RAT, making the units great for both moving and short-term or long-term storage.

Similar to 1-800-PACK-RAT, PODS offers three sizes of moving containers: seven feet, 12 feet, and 16 feet. These weather-resistant containers feature roll-up doors that don’t require as much space to open in your driveway, as well as ramp-free loading.

PODS offers the following services:

  • Moving containers moves for local and long-distance moves
  • Long-term and short-term storage solutions
  • Moving supplies
  • Packing and unpacking assistance (via third-party)
  • Loading and unloading assistance (via third-party)
  • Insurance plans
  • Commercial moving solutions

PODS provided a quote for moving a three-bedroom home going from Tampa, Florida, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, using two 16-foot rental containers for $4,301. This quote includes taxes, gas, mileage, and $10,000 in contents protection. PODS is also a pay-as-you-go service, so this cost is not due all at once.

PODS calculates the value of your belongings when you place an order with the company. When you book with PODS, you can increase or lower the amount of coverage or remove it entirely. Often, PODS includes $10,000 in contents protection in your quote. Each contents protection plan has a $100 deductible.

The company also offers its Container Only Option. This option would be significantly cheaper according to the amount of containers you order, and it covers any loss or damage to your PODS container. It does not cover any damage to your belongings.

If you want a detailed breakdown of what PODS storage would cost you, fill out this easy-to-use questionnaire.

State Availability

PODS helps with both local moves and cross-country moves in all 50 states. However, the company does not have a location in every state. PODS does not feature branches in:

  • Montana
  • North Dakota
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

Why We Chose PODS

If you value having the most convenience possible, then PODS is a great choice for you. The company offers excellent storage services. U-Pack: Most Affordable

U-Pack functions in a similar manner to 1-800-PACK-RAT and PODS, but it focuses exclusively on long-distance moving. If you’re move is less than 150 miles away, you should look to another moving container company.

The company has fewer size options for its moving containers, but it offers a unique pay-for-what-you-use policy for moving trailers. This policy allows you to adjust space used according to your budget. In fact, we found that U-Pack can be as much as 60% cheaper than other moving container companies.

Pros & Cons

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of U-Pack:

✔ Affordable rates compared to competitors
✔ Pay-for-what-you-use policy provides flexibility in pricing and space
✔ Available in all 50 states

✘ 150-mile minimum for moves
✘ No access to on-site storage
✘ Customers must purchase additional services to receive U-Pack’s service guarantee

Services

Like other moving container companies, U-Pack drops off either its shipping containers or a moving trailer at your original home when you request it. U-Pack’s ReloCubes come in only one size, a 70” x 82” x 93” container. You then have three business days to pack the container with your belongings. This window is shorter than both PODS and 1-800-PACK-RAT’s 30 days for loading.

U-Pack offers customers the option to purchase Guaranteed Delivery, which gives access to U-Pack’s 100% Customer Satisfaction Guarantee. This guarantee states that if your shipment doesn’t arrive on the guaranteed date, U-Pack reduces your transportation charges by up to 100%.

A standout feature of the company is its pay-for-what-you-use policy. This allows customers to pay per footage of a moving trailer from ABF Freights. This feature is useful if you’re uncertain about how much space you require for your belongings.

U-Pack offers these services:

  • Moving container moves
  • Pay-for-what-you-use moving trailer moves
  • Moving labor via third-party companies
  • GPS tracking
  • Insurance plans

Cost of U-Pack

We received an estimate from U-Pack for two ReloCubes going from Tampa, Florida, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in roughly a month for $2,713. This quote is all-inclusive and features no hidden fees.

For a better idea of what U-Pack might cost you, get an instant quote by completing this online form.

State Availability

U-Pack helps long-distance moves in all 50 states, as well as Puerto Rico. However, U-Pack requires a minimum mileage of 150 miles to provide its services. Make sure your overall distance is 150 miles or more if you want U-Pack’s help.

Why We Chose U-Pack

U-Pack is an excellent option for anyone interested in a moving container company on a budget. U-Pack offers less flexibility than some of its competitors, but proper planning can alleviate any problems caused by the company’s narrow time frame.

We find U-Pack’s pay-for-what-you-use policy an excellent budget-friendly approach to using a large moving trailer. U-Pack is also the only company on this list that offers access to an entire trailer of a moving truck and not just portable moving containers.

To get a better idea of U-Pack’s offerings, fill out this easy-to-use survey.

What Impacts a Moving Container Company’s Cost

Most moving container companies have the same factors that affect the overall cost. Here are some of the major factors that impact the cost of renting a moving container:

  • Origin of your move
  • Date and time of your move
  • Overall distance of the move
  • Number of moving containers used
  • Overall size/weight of your move
  • Parking and drop-off access
  • Additional protection plans you purchase
  • Additional services you purchase

What Is the Difference Between Moving Container Moves and Full-Service Moves?

Moving Container Moves

A moving container company can add more affordability, flexibility, and control over your move. Though you can save money by packing and loading on your own, a moving container company will handle the transportation for you, allowing you to avoid driving a rental truck. In short, a moving container company can be a happy medium for the moving experience.

Often, a moving container company can hold your belongings at a local storage facility until you request it to deliver them to your new home. This allows you to prepare the new house for your belongings. You then unload the container(s) at your own pace.

Full-Service Moves

A full-service moving company can handle every aspect of your move for you. This includes furniture disassembly, wrapping, packing, loading, transportation, unloading, unpacking, and reassembly.

If this hands-free approach interests you, check out some of our top suggestions for full-service movers below.

International Van Lines

We find International Van Lines to be the ‘Best Overall Full-Service Mover.’ The company provides industry-standard full-service options like disassembly and reassembly, packing and unpacking, and loading and unloading services. International Van Lines also supplies specialty services for difficult items like pianos and antiques. If you require help with transporting a recreational vehicle or one of your cars, International Van Lines supplies car shipping services.

The estimated cost for moving a three-bedroom home from Tampa to Philadelphia with International Van Lines is $4,200–$6,150.

We suggest you get more details on how International Van Lines can make your move more stress-free by completing this short questionnaire.

American Van Lines

If you’re concerned about fluctuating pricing, then American Van Lines is a great choice for you. American Van Lines offers fixed rates at the end of its quote process. This means no matter what happens during your move, you pay the price quoted to you.

The company is also a great option if you have challenging or difficult items that you are worried about having handled. This is because American Van Lines provides full-time employees, as opposed to contract workers, that hold on average 10 years of moving experience. This means you receive knowledgeable and consistent moving labor with American Van Lines

American Van Lines estimates that a move from Miami to New York City for a three-bedroom home (or 10,000 pounds) would cost around $8,182. This is the average cost of previous conducted for this move, so this would include a collection of services like packing and loading.

We suggest you get a better understanding of what fixed-price American Van Lines can give you by filling out this short survey.

How To Prepare for a Move

It can be a challenge to keep everything in order leading up to moving day. There are many important steps to take when going through a move of any size or distance. To help you keep in mind some major steps, we’ve listed some in detail below:

Determine Which Type of Move You Need

Though you are researching moving container companies, you want to consider if a self-service or full-service move appeals to you more. If you have plenty of help from friends and family, want to save money, and prefer doing things from a DIY approach, then a self-service moving company might be better for you.

Cut Down Your Inventory

Moving is a great moment to get rid of any underused or unwanted belongings. To do so efficiently, we suggest you create two piles of items as you pack and organize for the move. You should create one pile for items to donate and one pile of items to throw away. A few days before moving day, take some time to take these piles to their respective drop-off locations.

Tell People Who Need to Know About It

You are most likely telling your friends and family about your move, but there are some other significant individuals and organizations you need to notify. Inform insurance companies, tax agencies, utility companies, the post office, the Social Security administration, and your Internet service provider about your move.

Check That Your Moving Company Is Licensed and Insured

All of our recommended moving container companies listed above are licensed, bonded, and insured. However, if you decide to use another moving company, you might want to make sure they are properly licensed and insured. To do so, you obtain the company’s USDOT number and visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website to search for them.

Create a Detailed Inventory

Many moving companies can help with this step. Some companies will provide a tool to help create an inventory of your belongings. When you create an inventory, make note of the condition of your items and take pictures of them. These photos and notes will come in handy if you have to file a damage claim for reimbursement.

Everything went great. I ended up using upack to deliver a cube and ship it to our destination in SF. I looked at using pods first, but they would've taken an extra week to deliver everything to SF. UPack was really fast and convenient. The company was flexible with my schedule for delivery and pickup of the cube, and it was only around $1,300.

So far it has been the ultimate in knowing how I put the stuff in and how it will be upon arrival. If one doesn't mind doing some loading and unloading. The trailers do come with a ramp. And one can get helpers I suppose. trailer is tall, so it can be packed in pretty good. They charge by linear foot.

We went with a freight trailer with ABF instead of their moving containers because of our limited driveway space. Also, the freight trailer option is much cheaper even with the added expense of renting a moving truck to load and unload at the trailer location. I didn't have any problems and the trailer arrived within 3 days. Would definitely use this company again for our next move.

Our U-Pack Review

As a leader in the “do it yourself” moving category for a long time, U-Pack scores highly on our best moving pods list. Their Relocube is perfect for smaller moves and their moving trailer option makes larger moves easy.

The company offers their, “You load, we drive” service to practically anywhere in the continental US as well as Puerto Rico and Canada. We especially love there is no initial deposit and you can track your shipment online. They also have short and long term storage options.

While we always recommend getting multiple quotes when looking for a moving cube company, U-Pack does tend to beat the competition on pricing for moves in the 100 – 250 mile range. The company only charges for the space you actually use which is also a nice perk.

U-Pack usually only handles moves over 100 miles, which is kind of a bummer. Also, if you need more than 3 days to load or unload your moving cube, U-Pack won’t be an option. Storage is limited to off-site locations.

Assuming none of these issues are deal breakers, if you’re looking for the best price long distance moving containers, U-Pack is definitely a company to check out.

Cost included drop offs and pickups, long distance move, and an extra month of storage, a 16' POD. Pricing was accurate but I'm working with them to remove an extra charge for an additional month of storage I didn't need (was an autopay, this charge came up long before the new month would have started, so that I'm not a fan of). They were always on time, everyone I talked to was friendly, their technology of moving the POD is neat, and all of our stuff made it safely across the country.

Our PODS Review

Coming in at number three, the inventor of the moving container; PODS Moving and Storage. There’s a lot to love about PODS especially their 3 container sizes, flexible storage options, and local and long distance moving and storage services.

Let’s start with local moves. If you’re moving within 50 miles you can use a 12ft or 16ft container. For moves over 50 miles, the 7ft or 16ft sizes are available.

All containers allow for open-ended, monthly storage. And you can store on your property or at a nearby PODS storage facility. PODS is a particularly good option if you’re staging a home or need a lot of time for loading or unloading.

PODS also offers the ability to purchase additional insurance options and hire moving labor to help load your container all on their website.

PODS household name in moving and storage can sometimes mean their pricing is higher than competitors. Especially if a PODS location is over 50 miles away from your location. They can also book up fast due to their popularity. Learn more about PODS costs.

Regardless, PODS is an excellent option and we recommend to always check their price.

Moving Place Reviews

Ryan at moveBuddha was very helpful in assisting us with our cross country move. He recommended Moving Place, who I had not heard of through my own research and they charged 1000s less than the more well-known companies I was looking at. Our truck was on time on both ends of the move, and the Moving Place rep I worked with, Stuart, was very helpful and always prompt at answering my questions.

We could not have been more pleased with how our move turned out, and especially with the great service we received from moveBuddha and the Moving Place. We really booked our move about as close to the last minute as you can get, and involved transporting our son's furniture and assorted belongings from Indiana to Oregon where he was entering his junior year of college. We were convinced there was no way to get the move accomplished in time, but moveBuddha and Moving Place got it done, and at a cost well below every other estimate we had. Ryan at moveBuddha was simply wonderful to work with as was Stuart at Moving Place. They were on top of the move from the start and seemed to care about getting our son moved in almost as much as us. Great service, great people, and just a satisfying experience all the way around. We will definitely be using them again, and will gladly recommend moveBuddha and Moving Place to anyone planning a move. We plan to use them again when we finalize our move to California in the next few months.

Great option for a large household move without breaking the bank. The trailer drop-off and pick-up on both ends were right on time. We went over a bit on our quoted linear feet for the trailer, but since we are the only household in the truck it was not a problem, we just paid a little more, but still much more reasonable than a full service mover.

Our Moving Place Review

moveBuddha customers consistently score Moving Place number one for customer service and competitive pricing. The company continues to be a leader in the moving container industry and our preferred option for long distance moves.

A number of things make Moving Place stick out, but by far their most unique offering is the option to rent an entire 52′ professional moving van. This option is hard to beat for those doing large moves. The trailer comes equipped with all the moving pads, straps and dollies you’ll need. You can even transport a car in the trailer directly with your home goods. You load and they drive everything to your destination.

For smaller, 1 – 3 bedroom moves, Moving Place has a moving trailer option where you only pay for the space you use. The trailer is dedicated to your move and offers up to 3 days to load and unload your items. Short term storage is also available with this option.

Unfortunately, the company doesn’t have any options for local moves. They also don’t provide instant quotes online, you’ll have to submit a form first.

Minor drawbacks aside, Moving Place is absolutely a company to consider if you’re moving interstate or cross country.

Moving anywhere is gawdawful, interstate moves are hell. I'm not going to say that Zippy Shell made my move across state lines a walk in the park, but they made it far easier than it could have been at a reasonable cost. So not hell. Purgatory light.

Zippy Shell's price came in quite a bit lower than the other bidders. And Paul Vicente with Zippy Shell was easy to contact and very helpful over the phone.I was nervous all along about the full-service aspect of the move. Zippy Shell did not have a contract that matched the service they were providing. As I understand it, this is a new service they are providing: they really need to produce a contract which matches the service they are providing. I had to trust Paul's word (and I managed to get in writing via text messages).

The driver did a really good job. He coordinated with me the day before the move. He showed up on time. And he did a good job prepping me on how the day should go. There was quite a bit of confusion on the movers and packers. The movers showed up a little late. When they arrived, they informed us that they don't pack, they only move.

For several hours (maybe 3-4) it was unclear if the move would be finished by the end of day, as was promised by Paul. However, a second moving contractor was hired. They showed up midday and really kicked ass. They had everything packed up and moved out in a few hours.

At the destination (Columbia, MO), we had the same driver. He showed up within a couple days of the move day from Scottsdale. We were just moving everything into a storage unit, so it all was pretty easy and went smoothly.

In all, the driver was great. Paul was helpful, responsive, etc. Their new full-service move process requires some refining (i.e. the contract and sub-contractor hiring needs improvement). And their price beat everyone else (I think the closest bidder was about 10% more in price.)

Our Zippy Shell Review

Zippy Shell continues to be one of our favorite container moving companies especially for moves out of major metros like New York City or Chicago. Their containers are street legal and can be parked just like cars, removing a lot of permit headaches.

The company offers a 15-foot size container. The internal capacity of the containers is slightly smaller than competitors so be sure to compare sizes when evaluating Zippy against the competition.

Something we also like is Zippy Shell makes it relatively easy to add loading and unloading help and their base package includes 30 days of storage. They also have a number of different insurance options to protect your goods in case of an accident.

For anyone seriously considering using a container for their next move we highly recommend adding Zippy Shell to your list of potential options and getting a quote.

1-800-Pack-Rat Reviews

Used 1800Packrat for a long distance move from Columbus, OH to Williamsburg, VA. We had a 2 week vacation planned in the middle of the move, so using a container service that allowed one month from drop off to drop off without additional storage fees worked well. We needed three 16 foot containers for all the items in our house. Had no issues with 1800PackRat and would use them again.

If you are using them, I would recommend that you schedule the container drop off and pick up one day before you actually need it if you have friends or movers loading/unloading. On our drop off day, one container was delivered at 8:30 AM and the other two at 6:00 PM. Same deal on the drop off at our new house. So the containers were delivered on the promise day, just not first thing in the morning.

We moved with a storage container from 1-800-pack-rat. PackRats did not disclose a substantial "gas adjustment" fee on the phone when booking - even when I asked about the possibility of additional fees. Although this fee was in the fine print of the agreement they sent me, it seemed like they were trying to hide it.

Customer Service

The cost posted above is an estimate--they charged about $3800 but had quoted $3525. The lady who placed the order did NOT tell me that there was a surcharge for gas now. When I used them before about a year ago there was NOT a surcharge for gas, so this surprised me. Especially since we discussed that the price was higher than last time I used them and gas then was twice as much as it is now, and I had expected the cost to be lower---then low and behold the bill comes and there is a SURCHARGE for gas if the rate for diesel is over $1.50 a gallon, which is a MAJOR rip off as that price has not been seen in decades...So since they can not be upfront with the price they are not worth doing business with and are now off my list. The surcharge was in the small print on the order at the very end, in the type that you can not read as its too small and one would need a magnifying glass to read.

They also had the destination street address off by one number, but that was easily fixed with a phone call. They dropped off the box on the day scheduled and delivered it on the day scheduled. We are still waiting pick up of the empty box, but do not need to be there for that. Nothing really shifted in the box.

U-Box Reviews

My load was too small for moving companies, yet too big for me to pack and load myself. U-Haul contracts with loaders who will load your boxes and furniture. My team was excellent in knowing how to pack one of those Big Boxes. That's all he does and knew what he was doing! The company that unloaded the box at my destination was just as good. Cost effective and easy for me. Plus, they kept in touch with me every step of the way - reporting all moves and arrivals. Excellent service from start to finish.

Moved a one bedroom apartment cross country (North Carolina to California), used two U-boxes. Everything was good, a few hiccups getting the scheduled delivery in California but they were fixed with a few calls. Just make sure you confirm everything, etc, your service will depend on who handles your order at the end office. They have moving helpers integrated into the system so it's easy to hire people to help you, which is nice! Our U-Box Review

U-Haul is a household name when it comes to affordable moving. The “do-it-yourself” truck rental brand is known as one of the cheapest ways to move and its new U-Haul U-Box moving container is no exception. While not the largest or highest quality, the U-Box is consistently the lowest price container option on the market.

We really love how affordable U-Haul is making containerized moving. The U-Box is perfect for recent college grads or anyone moving a small amount of stuff. From our research, U-Box pricing is almost always very competitive with other container options.

We also can’t get over how easy U-Haul’s website makes it to book a moving container. It’s one of the best booking experiences in the moving and storage industry. U-Haul also has more locations than any other company making it easy to find a local store.

U-Haul is known for no-frills and the U-Box stays true to this motto. The container has the smallest internal dimensions of any moving container on the market. That’s why we say, it’s a good option for really small moves.

The U-Box is also made out of fairly thin wood. It’s certainly not the most durable option, with most competitors using steel or metal for their containers. We have seen complaints and issues regarding the containers falling apart or instances of water damage.

But if you’re on a tight budget and looking for the most affordable way to ship, U-Box is definitely an option worth looking into. In less than 30 seconds you can get a price off of U-Haul’s website for pretty much any interstate move.

Our SMARTBOX Portable Storage Review

SMARTBOX Portable Storage was founded not long after shipping containers started to take off in the US but the company has struggled to grow compared to other storage companies that entered the market later.

SMARTBOX is all about low-cost and that’s why we’ve included them on this list. The company prides itself on its low rates and price matching policy. For college students or super budget conscious movers, SMARTBOX can be a great way to save some money.

The primary issue with SMARTBOX is a lack of locations. Keep in mind, if you’re moving long distance you will need a SMARTBOX location on both ends of the move. If that’s not the case, well then you can’t use them.

Wooden portable storage containers also aren’t the best moving container on the market. They are more susceptible to weather damage and can sometimes fall apart during moves. Something to keep in mind if you’re shipping nice furniture or expensive items.

Overall, if SMARTBOX has a location in your area and your move is relatively small you should at least get a free quote. Moving into a new home is pretty much always expensive so doing as much price comparison as possible is recommended.

How much do moving containers cost?

For local moves, portable moving container costs can range from $150 to $400 for a single container and 1 month of storage. For larger moves that require multiple containers, costs can range from $800 to $1,100.

If you’re moving long-distance, moving pod costs can range from $1,000 to $7,000+ depending on the distance and number of containers your move requires. You’ll have to call most companies to get pricing for interstate moves.

To get a ballpark estimate of moving costs check out our moving container cost calculator.

Which size moving container do I need?

Which container size is right for your move is a tricky question. The answer will depend on the total volume of all the items you’re moving and which size containers the company offers. To give you a general idea:
  • A Few Items - 7 ft container (392cf)
  • Studio (400-600 sq feet) - 7 ft container
  • 1 Bedroom (800-1000 sq ft)- 12 ft container
  • 2 Bedroom (1000-1500 sq ft) - 12 ft container
  • 3 Bedroom (1500 -2000 Sq ft)- 16 ft container
  • 4 Bedroom (2000-3000 sq ft) - 16 ft + 12 ft container
  • 5 Bedroom plus (3500+ sq ft) - (2x) 16 ft containers

Note: these estimates are based on average household sizes. You should work directly with each company to determine what size and how many containers you need.

Are moving containers better than hiring movers?

Storage is the biggest advantage of moving containers over moving companies. With a moving container, you can have continual access to all your items while in storage and store for as long as you like. With moving companies, you typically don’t have access to the items and long term storage can get expensive. If your move requires long term storage, moving containers are an excellent option.

Are moving containers weatherproof and secure?

All moving containers are generally weatherproof and can be locked for security. But over time containers will get beat up so you should always check for damage to the container upon arrival.

Do moving pods include moving labor?

Most moving container companies offer moving labor as an add-on service. Hourly rates usually vary from $100 to $300 per hour depending on the size of the move and how long you need the labor help. The best way to find labor-only moving services is on a website like HireAHelper.

How long can I store a moving container?

Most moving container companies will allow open-ended storage on a month-to-month basis. You can store the container on your property or at the closest company location for a monthly fee.

The only exception is freight trailers. Freight trailers typically only allow for a maximum of 30-60 days storage and the trailer must be stored at a company location.

But it doesn’t stop there. U-Pack also has a pay-for-what-you-use policy that allows you to order extra containers—but only pay if you use them. It also scores top-shelf customer reviews and has instant online quotes to make your life easier (who wants to wait on hold these days?). On the downside, U-Pack doesn’t let you store the U-Pack ReloCube at your home (a problem if you’re hoping to unload the container over several days)—and it offers only long-distance moves.

U-Pack has the lowest prices

No moving container company has better prices than U-Pack. We compared U-Pack quotes to hundreds of estimates from other moving container companies. We looked at small homes and big ones, short distances and cross-country trips, and quite a bit in between. What did we find? On average, U-Pack’s prices are about 15% cheaper than competitors.

Moving a tiny apartment? U-Pack is $820 less expensive than other companies. Got a five-bedroom brownstone that people say looks like ritzy suburb homes in holiday movies where everybody gathers together? Look for U-Pack to save you $720 over the competition. It’s tough to beat prices this low.

What do customers think of U-Pack?

We paid a real-life customer to move with U-Pack in exchange for her candid feedback. She awarded the company 4.5 out of 5 stars and loved its low prices and fast delivery.

U-Pack has a pay-for-what-you-use policy

U-Pack makes it easy to plan for a big move without paying through the nose. Moving container companies often charge per container, so the more stuff you have, the more it costs. But U-Pack does things differently. It charges by the number of containers you fill up rather than how many you order. So if you’re not sure how many containers you need, err on the safe side and get an extra one. If you don’t use it, you don’t have to pay for it.

Looking for the very best?

1-800-PACK-RAT—Tons of deals

1-800-PACK-RAT offers more discounts and price matching deals than any other moving container company. Its high-quality containers mean a lofty price tag—but only to start with. Thanks to loads of discounts, 1-800-PACK-RAT’s prices often drop below average for moving containers. And that’s saying something for a moving company with the strongest containers on the market.

1-800-PACK-RAT even offers local and long-distance delivery (some companies do only one or the other). The biggest drawback is that 1-800-PACK-RAT’s bills can be confusing (it breaks your invoice into so many different fees that you can leave feeling like you’re not 100% sure what your final price is).

What sets 1-800-PACK-RAT apart?

1-800-PACK-RAT is serious about discounts

1-800-PACK-RAT makes up for initial high prices with discounts and price matching. Virtually every time we called 1-800-PACK-RAT, friendly reps offered to meet or beat PODS’s price (it doesn’t have the same deal for companies like U-Box with flimsy containers). That equates to an instant 5% savings if 1-800-PACK-RAT is willing to price match.

And the price cuts keep coming. 1-800-PACK-RAT has tons of moving container discounts for everyone from college students to medical professionals:

  • Best price guarantee
  • Local moves
  • First responders
  • Medical professionals
  • Military members
  • Senior citizens
  • Teachers

Most of 1-800-PACK-RAT’s discounts save you an extra 10%—bringing the company in line with other low-cost players like U-Pack and U-Box. That’s even more impressive when you consider the next selling point for 1-800-PACK-RAT: strong moving containers.

1-800-PACK-RAT has the strongest moving containers

1-800-PACK-RAT is the best of the best when it comes to container quality. Moving container construction ranges from low-quality wood to generic metal to steel. The second best container company (PODS) makes its containers with a steel frame. But 1-800-PACK-RAT takes things to a whole new level. Not only does 1-800-PACK-RAT have a steel frame, but it also has steel walls and doors. The company doesn’t say whether its containers could withstand a missile strike—but if anyone stood a chance, it would be 1-800-PACK-RAT. No company has stronger moving containers.

PODS—Great customer service

PODS goes out of its way to give you a top-notch customer experience. Its customer service reps get the highest marks in the business, and PODS has three container sizes to give you more flexibility. PODS is also available in nearly every state and offers both local and long-distance service. On the downside, it doesn’t include taxes in your estimate, and you have to call for a quote for moves over 50 miles. But with customer service this fantastic, that’s less of a drawback than it might be with other companies.

PODS has excellent customer service

None of our top moving container companies get better customer reviews than PODS. We did the math, and PODS’s average customer review score of 3.8 out of 5 stars is a half star higher than the industry average. People love its consistently professional drivers and on-time delivery. And they often praise PODS’s customer service reps. To see if the praise was legit, we repeatedly called PODS posing as customers. Time after time, we came away impressed with how easy it was to get accurate answers to our questions.

How much does a PODS move cost?

A PODS move costs about $3,160. PODS’s initial prices are slightly high, but the moving container company erases that problem with a huge discount. All Move.org readers qualify for a 10% discount. Since it can cost thousands of dollars to move, those savings add fast. When you compare PODS to the industry average for small or midsize homes, the average price savings is over $300.

The size of your home also impacts the cost of your PODS move. For example, a one-room apartment costs approximately $1,760 while a five-room home sets you back about $4,550. In each case, PODS costs less than the industry average.

Free moving boxes

Lower the cost of your move by asking around for free packing supplies and moving boxes. We’ve got some tips to get you started.

Zippy Shell—Flexible delivery

Zippy Shell has one of the coolest containers we’ve seen. The company’s cagelike construction lets you tie down your belongings every few inches, so things don’t fall during transport. Zippy Shell even offers to stagger your containers’ delivery in case you don’t need them all. So what’s not to love? Unfortunately, Zippy Shell is available in only 28 states—and it doesn’t include container rental fees in your quotes ($159 per month).

What sets Zippy Shell apart?

Zippy Shell has flexible delivery

Zippy Shell helps you save money by staggering the delivery of your moving containers. Since you pay per container, costs can add up if you order more than you need. While most companies deliver the number of containers you request—and charge you for them—Zippy Shell brings you only the containers you need.

If you think you need three containers but might be able to get the job done with two, Zippy Shell can split up your delivery. By bringing you two containers on one day but scheduling a third container for another day, you can cancel the next scheduled delivery if it turns out you don’t need it. And since a single Zippy Shell container can cost well over a thousand dollars, you’re looking at a boatload of savings.

Zippy Shell containers are unique (in a good way)

Zippy Shell containers have something we haven’t seen before: steel-cage construction. Why’s that important? It has to do with how safe your stuff is. During transport, things can move around inside the container and get damaged. Your belongings can even jam the doors from the inside so you can’t open the container. Zippy Shell solves that problem with steel bars spaced every three or four inches. All you have to do is loop a tie-down or rope around your stuff and connect it to the caged bar. Problem solved.

And in the rare instance that something still comes loose, Zippy Shell has barn style doors that open outward (instead of up and down like a garage)—so jamming is never a problem. Bottom line: your stuff stays safe.

Want a company that keeps your stuff safe?

SMARTBOX—Straightforward pricing

SMARTBOX takes the mystery out of shopping for a moving container. While many companies surprise you with hidden fees or don’t include taxes, SMARTBOX gives you a single final price from the beginning. SMARTBOX also has discounts for college students and includes weatherproof covers for its containers. But there are some disadvantages. In addition to high prices, SMARTBOX gets low marks from customers who have a hard time reaching its telephone representatives, and isn’t widely available.

What sets SMARTBOX apart?

SMARTBOX has straightforward pricing

SMARTBOX offers something rare in the moving container industry: straightforward prices. While many other companies tack on hidden fees, divide your final bill into multiple payments, or leave you guessing about how much taxes cost and when you’ll pay them, SMARTBOX makes it easy. You just pay a single and straightforward bill (taxes included). That’s it. If only every company made it this simple.

SMARTBOX has deals for college students

College is expensive—and SMARTBOX has special moving container deals to make sure arriving on campus doesn’t cost too much. That even applies to college faculty and staff. SMARTBOX has a $20 off coupon for just about everybody spending time at school:

  • Dormitory students
  • Faculty and staff
  • Individual students
  • International students
  • Off-campus students
  • Sororities / Fraternities
  • Study abroad students

I recently moved from Buffalo/Niagara Falls, NY to Steubenville, Ohio and used Pods for the move. I could not be happier with the service and was surprised at the reasonable cost. My Delivery/Pickup in Steubenville was handled by Andrew and in one word he was PROFESSIONAL. Not just the driving, which was awesome considering the cramped driveway, but by his whole attitude. I knew within minutes that Andrew knew his job and enjoyed people. He explained everything he was going to do and then, unlike politicians, he actually did it, and did it perfectly. I will not hesitate to recommend Pods to anyone looking for a smooth experience that takes the pressure away from moving..

The driver was excellent -- very professional. He showed me the warped (bowed) door, where the POD's cargo had shifted en route, and bent the door, so that it will not open. He diligently tried the procedures he was taught, but the door is too bent. I hired a PODS Preferred Moving Company (Pack-and-Load Services) to pack this POD. I purchased the exact number of wide, heavy-duty ratchet straps that Pack-n-Load services recommended. However, the packing crew didn't use all of them. The PODS driver said that unless the tiers are adequately secured, cargo can shift. I must now schedule an access visit, to unlock the padlock on the POD, then sit and watch as PODS crews attempt to open the door, hopefully open it without harming the cargo, then install a new door, so the POD can be transported to my apartment's parking lot.

I must be able to access these items before Dec 8, because the POD contains documents I must submit to the State of Florida for my driver's license, FL title, and FL car registration. If I don't obtain these documents, I'll be in violation of the law, because I will have been in FL for 30 days. I'll also be penalized with a large fine, according to a police officer who lives in my apt. complex. Though I'm very very unhappy with the moving crew which represents a PODS Preferred Moving company, I'm very happy with your PODs driver, today.

Our move went smoothly. I received calls the night before and ten minutes before each arrival. The driver arrived on the day and time as promised. The storage unit was in good condition. The door opened smoothly. Our goods arrived in good condition without mishaps. PODS provides helpful instructions and videos for packing online.

One problem I had was that I needed a different phone number to be used at the arrival city. I didn’t see where I could add another number in my online account. I asked customer service to add the number. But, I didn’t see the added number on my up dated documents. Since I didn’t see the change, I had to change the primary account number to the receiving city phone number. I generally had good experience with PODS customer service. The wait time was a little long.

When planning a move, if you have a 3 bedroom house; base your estimate on a 5 bedroom house. Unless you plan to have a huge yard sale or something, it won't all fit. We moved a 3 bedroom house full of furnishings and it required an additional 21 foot U-Haul truck to carry the stuff that didn't fit in the pod.

PODS response

Hi, Timothy! Thank you for your feedback! It really depends on the size/shape of your stuff and just how much stuff you have. Some people can fit a three-bedroom house into one 16-foot container; however, others need more than one container. We recommend checking out our moving/storage calculator to get a rough estimate of just how much stuff can fit into one of our containers: https://www.pods.com/resource-center/moving-and-storage-calculator. Thanks again for choosing PODS!

I decided on an interstate move to be closer to family when my lease ended, never imagining the logistics problems involved from covid. Availability of apartments in the area I moved to was scarce because people put lives on hold, and I decided that if I arrived and my housing had fallen through I could keep my belongings in storage in my container. There was a 3 week period of uncertainty, and my items were safe and dry in the PODS container while I waited for my apartment to be ready for occupancy. My only problem was communication whenever too many people called in for the amount of people answering calls and one person didn't want to relay instructions.

One cannot help but fear the worst when a company is not able to tell you where your belongings are when that is the only thing you hired them to do. We chose PODS for the purported convenience, safety, and size of the container we could get for our long distance move. On August 4, in anticipation of moving August 16th, we booked a 7 foot container for an international move, from North Carolina to British Columbia. They couldn't bring the pod to our driveway during the days we needed to load it. Fine. We rented a trailer and took everything to their warehouse.

Knowing we had to be in our new place before arranging the shipment, we made it across the country and entered Canada August 25, calling immediately to have our pod shipped to us. They couldn't schedule it to leave North Carolina until 9 days later, September 3. Their policy for international moves states that they cannot give you a date at which to expect your container to arrive, so we're told to contact them if we haven't heard in two weeks. Two weeks fly by, and, after calling customer service, calling the local warehouse, and emailing special services, I am told that it had just left Virginia, on its way to Washington state, where it would then wait again.

At this point, I have been charged another month's rent for their delays in shipping. Another two weeks goes by, and I have to reach out again to check status, at which point I am told they needed to hear from logistics a precise location of the pod. Days later, I have yet to hear a precise location, a remote estimation of when I can expect anything, and will likely have to go through all the hoops to find anyone with any information to talk to. I've been in an empty apartment for over a month, cold temperatures are setting in, and I'm considering whether I have to purchase things I already own just because of this company's incompetence.

I made a claim to PODS for an issue I had with my PODS experience in June 2021. It is now October 2021. My assigned claims representative does not return phone calls or emails. I have made countless phone calls to customer service and they transfer me to the claim representative's voicemail who ignores me. I have received no status update from the claim representative since I made my claim. My experience of trying to make a claim has been the worst. I am so sorry I ever used PODS. The claims process or lack thereof, totally makes the use of PODS not worth the money I spent.

They overcharged by almost $1k on the final bill. Gave them a call and the customer support said that they would investigate. Two months passed. They never followed up and now they don't reply to my e-mails.

In August, we hired PODS to deliver a pod. After several calls in which their system did not allow for scheduling at the time, we finally had delivered scheduled for last week, six weeks after pickup. Last week came and went. PODS never contacted us. We called the main number to speak to multiple agents over 4 hours. None of the agents were able to reach the PODS Storage Center handling our delivery to find out what happened. Today I find out it's because the phone number isn't valid, so no one within PODS itself can call the PODS Storage Center.

Throughout the week we called to 1) find out what happened - we were told the delivery team tried to call us and no one answered, so they thought we weren't home and 2) rescheduled - for today. It took over seven (7)! calls to reschedule. Well, today we called again because yet again, no one showed up. After an hour on hold and about 30 minutes with an agent, we find out that according to their notes on our account, the delivery team claims they called us - lies - and emailed us - more lies - to tell us that they won't deliver to us and they are now charging a storage fee. So they won't give us a refund for failing to do the job we hired them to do and they want us to pay them more money?!

I asked for a supervisor and was told their phone system doesn't allow for transferring to a supervisor. What is that? That's asinine. What poor customer service. The agent again tried to reach out to the local storage center by phone and oh look, the phone number doesn't work again. Surprise surprise. Then she gave us the address for the PODS Storage Center because the only thing we can do to get our stuff is to schedule a time to go get our stuff. This means we have to rent a UHAUL - if I wanted to rent a UHAUL, I would've done that in the first place - drive an hour away, empty the pod, drive back home, empty the uhaul, drive it back to the uhaul center. ALL OF THE THINGS I WANTED TO AVOID BY HIRING PODS TO SHIP THE POD FROM THE OLD HOUSE TO THE NEW HOUSE!!

The reason we have to do this is, supposedly, at some point this past week, a team member drove by our house and assessed that it was "too difficult to access the property". More lies. First of all, no one called, no one emailed, no one knocked on my door. If they had, I would've shown them exactly where they could park the pod. If they had called me after they came by with their decision, I would've told them about our neighbors who have had multiple pods in our development over the years. One neighbor had a pod in the community parking lot all summer. Another had a pod on one of the common lawns for a weekend.

They could, you know, just put it in front of our house, what a concept! I also have written permission from management to rope off a section of the shared parking lot adjacent to our house, since we thought that might be easier for the delivery team (I'm so thoughtful), as it allows for more maneuverability. I actually had set up a large area for the POD and the delivery truck for TWO DAYS waiting for this pod. All they had to do was call me, email me, text me, knock on the door, etc and I would've shown them the multiple options available to them to help them help us. But no one called, emailed, or showed up. So now we have to go get our POD, which they won't let us do for another two weeks or so, AND they're charging us a fee while the POD is in their storage center.

Here's what I think actually happened: Either PODS Storage Center Romulus lost our pod and is trying to cover this up, or their driver doesn't feel like driving on Saturdays. Either way, they canceled on us twice and came up with some false story about our "difficult to access" street that full-size delivery trucks drive down daily with no problems.

Complaining on the phone gets you nowhere because all they can do is call the Romulus center with their phone number that doesn't work. Complaining on social media gets you nowhere because they set up a chatbot to handle communications. It's not a real person. Do I have to email President & CEO Kathryn V. Marinello in order to get my POD after this company has had it for nearly two months? So if you're reading this and considering using PODS for your move - DON'T. Use someone else.

In a $5000 PODS move from Florida to California, for 3 weeks, no chat or telephone agent could tell me where my container was. They were all waiting for the Logistics Team to respond. When I wrote to Customer Relations, they offered no help. Find another way to move your belongings.

She whispered. I began to caress her breasts with my tongue, while stroking her thighs. Then he put his hand on her pubis and with his middle finger penetrated her cave. She was already wet and glowing with heat.
