Nissan Frontier (North America)

This article is about the Frontier sold in the US and Canadian market, which received a dedicated model since 2021. For the Frontier sold in global markets, see Nissan Navara.

Motor vehicle

The Nissan Frontier is a nameplate used by Nissan in several regions as an alternative to the Navara and NP300 nameplates. In North America, the nameplate was used since 1997, replacing the Hardbody. Since 2021, the Frontier sold in the US and Canada has been made a separate model distinct from the globally marketed Navara/Frontier. It is larger and developed to cater the needs of the North American market.[1]

Parallel models (1997–2021)[edit]

Main articles: Nissan Navara (D22) and Nissan Navara (D40)

The D22 Frontier was introduced in US and Canada in 1997 to replace the D21 Hardbody. In other markets, the D22 Frontier is also called the Navara, NP300, Hardbody, PickUp, among others. It was replaced by the D40 Frontier in 2004 for the 2005 model year, which is continued to be produced in the US for both US and Canadian market up to the 2021 model year. Both generations were mostly identical with the global version Nissan offered elsewhere, with minor changes for the North American market.

When the D23 Navara was introduced for the global market in 2014, a Nissan North America spokesperson restated that the D23 is not indicative of a D40 Frontier replacement for the North American market.[2][3][4][5]

  • 2001–2004 D22 Frontier extended cab (US)

The first dedicated Frontier model for the North American market, not shared with the global model, was unveiled on February 4, 2021 as the third-generation model for the 2022 model year.[7] The third-generation Frontier is longer by 5 in (13 cm) than the second-generation Frontier. The vehicle rides on a revised high-strength steel ladder frame chassis carried over from the outgoing model.[8] It is offered extended King Cab and crew-cab layouts with either rear- or four-wheel drive, and five- and six-foot cargo box length options. Nissan claimed the vehicle is capable of hauling up to 1,610 lb (730 kg) of payload or tow up to 6,720 lb (3,048 kg).[9]

Trim levels include base S, SV, Pro-X, and top-spec Pro-4X. The King Cab pickup is offered with two- and four-wheel drive in either S or SV trim, paired to a 6.1-foot bed. The crew cab is available with two- or four-wheel drive in the S and SV trims, while four-wheel drive is standard on the Pro-4X. The Pro-4X trim received electronic locking differentials, Bilstein off-road shocks, and underbody skid plates as standard.[10]

This version is sold in Mexico alongside the D23 NP300/Frontier which has been offered in the country since 2014. Its launch for the Mexican market was confirmed by Nissan's Mexican division on 9 August 2021 as a competitor to the Toyota Tacoma and the Chevrolet Colorado. It will be sold under the name of Frontier V6 to distinguish itself from the D23 Frontier.[11] It went on sale on 29 September 2021.[12]

NISSAN FRONTIER CABIN CONFIGURATIONS

CABIN CONFIGURATIONS

With the 2021 Frontier, you have two different cabins to choose between, so you can get the interior space you need on your next road trip. Let’s dive into what makes each one of these cabins unique.

KING CAB

For starters, there’s the King Cab, which comes standard on the S and SV trim levels. It can seat up to four people, so you can bring some on your hiking buddies on your next excursion.

Inside, there’s 92 cubic feet of passenger volume, which breaks down into the following measurements:

Front Headroom: 39.7 inchesRear Headroom: 36.6 inches
Front Legroom: 42.4 inchesRear Legroom: 25.3 inches
Front Hip Room: 55.8 inchesRear Hip Room: 55.0 inches
Front Shoulder Room: 58.3 inchesRear Shoulder Room: 54.9 inches

As you can see, even your friends in the rear row will have plenty of room to stretch out in with this cabin configuration.

CREW CAB

Need a little more room, especially for your back-seat passengers? Then you’ll want to check out the larger Crew Cab available on the S and SV trims and standard on the PRO-4X®. In addition to being able to seat up to five passengers, this cabin offers 107 cubic feet of passenger space, along with the following dimensions…

Front Headroom: 39.9 inchesRear Headroom: 38.6 inches
Front Legroom: 42.4 inchesRear Legroom: 33.6 inches
Front Hip Room: 55.6 inchesRear Hip Room: 58.0 inches
Front Shoulder Room: 58.3 inchesRear Shoulder Room: 58.3 inches

While the two cabins are very similar when it comes to roomy space for the driver, the Crew Cab offers much more leg and headroom overall in the back row—an amenity you may need if you camp often with the same crew.

BED SIZE AND CAPABILITIES

SIZE AND CAPABILITIES

Along with your cabin options, there are two beds to choose from with the 2021 Nissan Frontier. The King Cab comes with the larger bed, which is 73.3 inches long—perfect for fitting drywall and plywood.

If you don’t need a larger bed for construction work, the Crew Cab is attached to a bed that runs a length of 59.5 inches. While shorter, this is still ample room for your ATV or a few mountain bikes.

Interested in the amenities of the Crew Cab but need the extra space? Good news! The SV trim is the only configuration available with the longer bed option to give you the best of both worlds.

AMPLE SPACE FOR YOUR ESSENTIALS

No matter which truck bed appeals to you, you’ll be treated to a bed width of 61.4 inches and depth of 18 inches. When either the King or Crew Cab options are properly equipped, you’ll also be able to carry a maximum of 1,460 pounds, so there’s no limit to your next adventure.¹

Want to take even more on your next getaway? The Frontier also boasts a maximum towing capacity of 6,720 pounds, allowing you to haul the following:²

  • A small hard-sided RV for camping trips with your friends.
  • A small recreational boat for relaxing adventures on the water.
  • A few snowmobiles to tear it up in the mountains.
  • A few jet skis for unforgettable fun in the sun.
  • A lightly loaded utility trailer packed with home improvement supplies.

EXTERIOR DIMENSIONS OF THE 2021 FRONTIER

DIMENSIONS OF THE 2021 FRONTIER

The final measurements you want to consider when looking for your next truck are its exterior dimensions. The 2021 Nissan Frontier is a small-sized pickup, meaning it’s more petite than light- or heavy-duty trucks. This smaller stance enables you to navigate with greater ease down winding roads or when off-roading.

No matter which cabin you select, you’ll have the following Fronter exterior dimensions…

  • Length: 205.5 inches
  • Width: 72.8 inches
  • Height: 70.1 inches
  • Wheelbase: 125.9 inches

If instead you opt for the long bed on the Crew Cab, your Frontier’s length will be extended to 219.4 inches. The wheelbase will also widen to 139.9 inches for greater stability and strength on the trails.

CRAFTED FOR ADVENTURE

Seeing these exterior dimensions, it’s no surprise that the Frontier is agile and handles trails extremely well—but this truck doesn’t stop there. Coming standard with 16-inch wheels and 9.8 inches of ground clearance, you’ll be able to sail over obstacles in your path with total ease.

Really want to take on some boulders? Upgrade to the available 18-inch wheels and your ride height will increase to 10.1 inches. When properly equipped, you’ll also be treated to the following off-road dimensions…

  • Angle of approach: 31.5 degrees
  • Angle of departure: 22.6 degrees
  • Breakover angle: 20.6 degrees

These measurements allow your Frontier to brave small hills without scraping its underside against the ground. Combined with skid plates available on your oil pan, fuel tank, and 4x4 transfer case, you’re sure to have a protected trek.

2022 Nissan Frontier by the specs

With a next-generation vehicle, you might expect some drastic changes on the spec sheet. However, with the 2022 Nissan Frontier, you would be wrong. The powertrain was introduced in 2020, and when you have something that’s worked for you for 14 years, I understand the reluctance to make big changes.

We did notice one interesting thing: While the design is drastically different and most of the dimensions for the next-gen Frontier are remarkably similar, the 2022 Nissan Frontier increases in length. It adds about 5 inches to both long and short wheelbases, which puts it more in line with some of its other competitors in the midsize truck segment. Because the bed length doesn’t change, we’re assuming those extra inches go into interior roominess. We don’t have access to those specs yet.

Another big change you’ll see is to max payload and towing numbers. Towing capacity increases by 100 pounds, and payload gets a nice increase by more than 200 pounds. Because of this, Nissan has also added standard trailer sway control – which the 2021 didn’t have even as an option.

Another big notable is the availability of 18-inch wheels. We had remarked in a previous spy-shot article, that the wheel wells looked big enough to accommodate larger wheels, and voila! Previously, the available wheels were 17-inchers.

Otherwise, as you dig into the specs, you’re going to see a lot of same, same.

The bottom line on the 2022 Nissan Frontier specs

While there aren’t drastic changes, I don’t see that as a bad thing. If you look at our launch article, you’ll see there are a lot of tech advances that propel the Frontier into the roaring ’20s.

With more payload capability and the addition of trailer sway control, Nissan adds benefit for those who want to use this truck for work. And with the addition of better connectivity and cool tech, Frontier is just as well positioned for play.

Frankly, we can’t wait to see the new Frontier in person, because we think Nissan got this one really, really right.

While you don’t see these changes reflected in the specs, the 2022 Nissan Frontier gets standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as an available 9-inch infotainment display. (Image courtesy of Nissan North America)
