How to Reset the P on a Ford

P is a diagnostic trouble code pertaining to leaks in the vehicles fuel vapor management system. The code is often set by failure to properly seal the gas cap after filling the tank, or from leaving the engine running while filling up at the gas station. The code can also be caused by a damaged fuel vapor line, a bad seal in the evaporative emissions system, a leak at the purge valve or a leak in the vapor canister. After you have determined the cause of failure and corrected it, you can clear the code out.

Step 1

Connect the scan tool to the Ford’s diagnostic port, located next to the steering column under the driver’s side of the dashboard. The port will have a small cover over it with the letters “DTC” embossed on the face of the cover. Pull that cover off to access the port. You can purchase a scan tool at your neighborhood auto parts store. Make sure the scan tool you are interested in buying works with Ford vehicles.

Step 2

Run a self test on the system by following the directions in your scan tools specific owner’s manual. When the codes are read, make sure the P is the only code present before erasing the codes. If another code is present, you will need to have it diagnosed and corrected before you clear the codes.

Erase the code when prompted to do so by the scan tool. Complete the self test and disconnect the scan tool. Replace the diagnostic port cover.

Tips

  • If you pull a P when reading codes, the first thing you should do is make sure your gas cap is on securely. If it isn&#;t, tighten it down properly and clear the code out. If the light returns within the next hundred miles of driving, you should have the code diagnosed by a certified driveability technician.

Things You'll Need

Warnings

  • Never leave your engine running when filling your tank. This can cause the power train control module to assume it is detecting any of several malfunctions due to the lost pressure in the fuel vapor system and the upward mobility of the fuel level sensor.
  • Additionally, never top off the gas tank after the station&#;s pump clicks off. The additional gas you pump in can flow into the evaporative fuel system and cause damage which will cost you far more than the price of a tank of gasoline to repair.

Mustang L, P code, gas won't fill

P is “small leak detected”. I believe this is only secondarily related to the difficulty filling the tank.

Define “won’t let me fill with gas completely”. Are you trying to “top off” the tank after the pump handles clicks off? If so, the system is operating properly. It’s designed to prevent you from “topping off” the tank. By doing so, it prevents the gasoline from contaminating the charcoal bed that allows the tank to vent without allowing hydrocarbon molecules to escape.

The purge valve allows hydrocarbon molecules captured by the charcoal bed while filling the tank or during normal operation to be “purged” (drawn) into the engine’s inductions system with the air that’s getting sucked in. It will not affect the ability to fill the tank.

However, if the charcoal bed is saturated with liquid gas, which usually happens from “topping off” the tank, IT will prevent you from being able to fill the tank properly by preventing the tank from being able to expel its air.

In short, you’re describing classic symptoms of a saturated charcoal bed (in the canister), with the exception of the P code, which may simply be a gas cap leaking air.

Post back with your thoughts on this. It isn’t my intention to find fault, only to help solve the malfunction(s). If my assumption about “topping off” is incorrect, I’d like to continue to try to help. I can offer an in-depth description of the system if that will help.

Ford Mustang OBD2 Code P Evaporative Emissions System – Small Leak Detected

Error Code P indicates that the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) control system has a very large leak such as fuel filler cap falling off, or that the EVAP control system is not operating properly.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) at different times performs various tests on the EVAP system. The OBD II Enhanced EVAP systems are positioned in place to keep fuel tank vapors from venting into the atmosphere, and instead purges them into the engine to be burned.

Regular pressure tests are conducted by the PCM to monitor the sealed system for leaks. The PCM monitors the EVAP system pressure by watching the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor. When the sensor indicates a small leak in the EVAP system, this code is set.

Definition

This diagnosis detects leaks in the Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) purge line using engine intake manifold vacuum. If pressure does not increase, the Engine Control Module (ECM) will check for leaks in the line between the fuel tank and EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve under the following vacuum test condition.

The vacuum cut valve bypass valve is opened to clear the line between the fuel tank and the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve. The EVAP canister vent control valve will then be closed to shut the EVAP purge line off. The EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve is opened to depressurize the EVAP purge line using intake manifold vacuum. After this depressurization is implemented, the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve will be closed.

Common Symptoms

There will likely be no noticeable symptoms other than the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL). This is because the EVAP system is a closed system and only controls fuel tank vapors, not engine management.

Possible Causes

Usually this P code is caused by an incorrect or faulty gas cap. Filling the fuel tank with the engine running could conceivably cause this code as well, or if the cap wasn’t properly tightened. Any of the following could also be the cause:

  • A small leak in any of the EVAP hoses or fuel tank hoses
  • A small leak in the purge valve or vent valve
  • The EVAP Canister may be leaking
  • Missing or loose fuel cap
  • Incorrect fuel filler cap used
  • Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
  • Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap
  • Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister or fuel tank leaks
  • Evaporative Emission (EVAP) system hose leaking
  • Fuel tank leaking

How to Check

P is a small evaporative emissions leak. Since , systems are designed to not vent gasoline fumes into the atmosphere. This code indicates a failure of this system that might pollute the atmosphere. The code is produced after a test of the fuel system is run. The test puts a pressure in the system (positive pressure I guess, but not sure), and detects over time if the system is sealed by checking if the pressure is maintained. A code scanner such as the Scan Gauge II can clear this code, but the key must be in the “accessory” position (engine not running). The test will rerun periodically (about every 2 days) and it will throw the code again, until you fix it.  State emissions tests will not pass a Ford Mustang in this condition.

To check, you can do the following:

  • Loose vacuum hoses that go to the fuel system.
  • Loose gas cap.
  • Crack in the gas tank refill neck.

How to Fix

Having this kind of error is not much to worry about since it is easy to fix.

P is believed to be a vacuum leak (major). all you have to do is with your Ford Mustang off, turn the ignition switch off and on 3 times. The codes will come up in your odometer. Then you can go to google and search for Dodge/Chrysler T&C codes and find out which one it is. The vacuum leak turned out to be a small 1/4 inch hose (90 degree elbow) on the sensing line from the gas tank (located on the driver side under the car). It was cracked on the top and didn’t even show from the bottom, it had to be removed to find the crack. Now check engine light, small vacuum leak.

First, using a scan tool activate the vent solenoid, sealing the system. Then monitor the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor. If the system is sealing properly, the number will stay consistent. If is isn’t, the pressure sensor will show that as well. If the system slowly leaks, use a smoke machine and watch for smoke exiting the system at any EVAP component. Any where there is smoke exiting the system, that is the faulty component. Do not pressurize the EVAP system with air pressure. Doing so can damage the purge and vent solenoids in the system.

Mustang p0456 ford

One of the most common trouble codes with the Ford Mustang is the P code. This trouble code references a number that is given to you when you plug your Mustang into a OBDII scanner. P Indicates that there is a small leak in the evaporative emission control system. It often appears with, or is related other codes, such as P, P, and very often P

Ford Mustang P Diagnosis

P is normally not an immediate threat to the drive-ability of your Mustang. Certainly anytime the service engine soon light is on, it&#;s good to deal with it as soon as possible.

While the trouble code may state that there is a &#;small leak&#; in the EVAP system of your Ford Mustang, it is actually referring to the amount of pressure lost, and not the physical size of the leak. These leaks can be really small.

Ford Mustang P Definition

P is a universal OBDII trouble code. This means that regardless of which make or model of vehicle, the code will mean the same thing (Mustang or not). The code technically stands for:

System Small Leak &#; Evaporative Emission System

The EVAP system captures all fuel vapor from the fuel tank and sends them to the engines intake in order to be ignited in the normal combustion process. When there is a small leak in the Ford Mustang&#;s EVAP system, it will throw the P OBDII Code. If there is a large leak, it&#;ll throw P

Ford Mustang P OBDII Code Symptoms

P Ford Mustang

P code will typically not be accompanied by any noticeable symptoms other than the smell of gas and the service engine soon light.

You should particularly notice the smell of fuel around the fuel tank area or fuel filler tube.

The EVAP system deals directly with fuel vapors. If these vapors are leaking from the system, you&#;ll often smell them faintly while operating the vehicle. But, it won&#;t affect the way the engine itself runs. The EVAP system deals with fuel vapor, and not the running of the engine in your Mustang.

Mustang P Trouble Code Causes

There are many things that can cause the P trouble code to trigger in your Ford Mustang. If your Mustang has warned you at all in the last few months that the fuel cap was off when it wasn&#;t, then replacing it would be a great first step.

Here are the most common problems that will throw the code, presented in order (somewhat) from most to least likely:

  • Evap System Hose&#; The hose that carries the fuel vapor from the fuel tank to the intake manifold can begin to leak. This will cause the P code. Look for either a tear or hole in it. This is one of the most common issues that causes the code.
  • Vapor Canister Purge Valve&#; One of the most common causes of the P code is the vapor canister purge valve. It&#;s really easy to replace. There are a few clips that you need to find and remove.
  • Fuel Tank Sending Unit&#; It is possible for the gasket that attaches the fuel sending unit to the gas tank to go bad. This can reduce tank pressure and throw the code.
  • Fuel Cap&#; A bad fuel cap can cause the code to be thrown for sure. Often, you&#;ll get a message informing you that the fuel cap is off even when it is on. If you are getting that message, plus a P, it may save you a ton of time and money to replace the fuel cap and see if it goes away.
  • Fuel Filler Neck&#; There is often a gasket where the fuel filler neck connects with the gas tank. This gasket can dry out, especially with vehicles that spend their time in dry climates. When it dries out, the fuel tank can&#;t hold pressure anymore.

P Diagnosis- Ford Mustang

A mechanic has a wide range of instruments at his disposal to diagnose what would be causing the P in your Ford Mustang. Here are the most common things that are done to diagnose the code:

  • The mechanic will typically check to see if there are any other trouble codes. The more trouble codes there are, the easier it can be to diagnose a problem. That&#;s because when they appear together in certain combinations, there will often only be only a few conditions that will throw any combination of codes at one time.
  • After ascertaining what trouble codes appear with the P, the mechanic will typically inspect the EVAP system. This includes the purge valve, line, and canister.
  • The mechanic will inspect the gas cap to make sure that it can handle pressure. If you are getting a warning that your gas cap is off, even when it&#;s on, replacing it will more than likely clear this code.
  • The fuel tank pressure will be checked and monitored.
  • After for the checks and fixes listed above, the mechanic will perform two tests:
  • A smoke test, and they&#;ll use a scan tool to confirm that the EVAP solenoids and valves are operating properly.

Here&#;s a pretty good video on diagnosing these leaks from Scotty Kilmer, if you are interested:

Most Common P Fixes

Here are the most common Mustang P fixes:

  • Gas cap replacement
  • EVAP line replacement
  • Replace charcoal canister
  • Replace the fuel tank

Of all the items listed above, it would be wise to start with the gas cap and work your way to the fuel tank, since the gas cap is far and away the easiest and least expensive items to replace on here.

Here&#;s a great video on how to test your gas cap.

Good luck figuring out what is causing your Ford Mustang to throw the P code. We hope this helps. If there is anything that you feel like you could add, please feel free to leave a comment below.

Is P a Serious Concern?

While P is not going to cause the Mustang&#;s engine to stop running, it should not be treated lightly. You could have a fuel leak. Pay extra attention to your tank level and make sure you are not leaking fuel. We recommend taking it in and/or dealing with it right away.
