Dark Knight Amulet Quest.png

NPCs: Gilmore, Dougal, Black Wizard (NPC)

At this point no further quests are given. You may follow the below instructions if you wish to become a Dark Knight:

  1. Drop the Dark Knight Amulet on the Barri Dungeon Altar.
  2. Talk to Dougal in the Other World with the Where Black Wizard Is Keyword to receive an Albey Dungeon Pass.
    • This is not the same pass given by Kristell previously.
  3. Drop the pass on the Albey dungeon altar.
    • This is a dungeon with one floor and only two rooms. The first room is a switch room that spawns four Gray Town Rats. The second room is the boss room which only contains the Black Wizard as an NPC.
    • The Black Wizard will offer you two choices: "Become a Dark Knight" or "Undecided".
      • It is impossible to revert back to a Paladin upon becoming a Dark Knight. Additionally, the Black Wizard will not ask to confirm on selecting "Become a Dark Knight".
      • Choosing "Become a Dark Knight" initiates a cutscene and then transports you to Tir Chonaill, with the Armor of Darkness removed from your inventory. Afterwards, all Paladin skills are converted to their Dark Knight equivalent skills of the same rank (e.g. Spirit of Order becomes Soul of Chaos) and you will learn Control of Darkness (due to having no Paladin equivalent).
      • Choosing "Undecided" will simply remove the Armor of Darkness from your inventory, but keep you inside the dungeon. To leave the dungeon, exit through the entrance. You may return at any point if you wish to become a Dark Knight.
      • If you try to meet the Black Wizard while transform in Paladin, No options will be provided. Instead he will question and mock about player's decision and ask to come back later.

dark knight quests, part ii;

Here are translations from “Our Answer,” the level 50 dark knight quest.

I meant to translate the DRK quests shortly after Heavensward’s launch, because the changes here are among the most extreme in the entire game, but honestly, I hate English Fray (Esteem) so much that I just kept putting it off. I can see why he appeals to certain people, but I just can’t stand him, so… he’s the reason this took so long.

It was also my intention to translate the entire Dark Knight questline, as I did for the lancer guild quests some time back (messily — I’ve half a mind to repost that because it’s so unpleasantly organized), but having to read English Fray’s lines is so painful that I cut my workload down to just the level 45 and 50 quests. This should be enough to give you a general idea of how different the JP and EN quests are, but if demand is high for it, I’ll do the rest of the quests, too. Anyway, enjoy.

As a word of warning, these translations adhere very closely to the original text but are not entirely literal in several places. I could easily provide completely literal translations upon request, but in general I swapped things around to avoid the Japanese grammatical idiosyncrasies of phrases like “the you who X for Y and the me who Y for Z,” and so on and so forth. Additionally, there are several places where I would have liked to reword things for stylistic purposes, as I sometimes do, but here I chose to remain loyal to the text.

FRAY: Ah, [PLAYER]… So you’ve come.
I’m pleased. I knew you would never disappoint me…
FRAY: …Ugh…
…We don’t have much time left. Let’s leave this city… for an adventure, just the two of us…
FRAY: A new adventure… yes, how nostalgic…
We could leave Eorzea as nameless travelers, protecting only that which truly matters. We could live
FRAY: Outside the Gates of Judgment, we will join once more.
You need but call my name, and I will find you…

LOCALIZATION
Fray: I knew you would come to your senses, [PLAYER]. Now, let us…let us go…
Fray: …If I never see snow again, it’ll be too soon.
Fray: We should go somewhere warm&#;at least for a little while…
Fray: Wait for me near the Gates of Judgement. When you are alone, call out and I shall join you.

???: That voice just now, could it be…? It is! ‘Tis [PLAYER]!
STEADY KNIGHT: Forgive me — you would not know our faces. I am but a humble knight sworn to Lord Drillemont, who keeps vigil over Whitebrim Front. Our garrison is much indebted to you and yours for your assistance with the Stone Vigil and with Lady Iceheart.
STEADY KNIGHT: Your presence here now seems to me the divine providence of the Fury Herself! Please — might we make of you one request?
SHAKY KNIGHT: Know you the giants that live near Boulder Downs? It would seem that they are planning to expand their territory — they move further northward each day.
SHAKY KNIGHT: We knights of Whitebrim Front have been tasked with culling their numbers, but there are so many, and our own numbers are so few…
SHAKY KNIGHT: If we could just eliminate their leader, Loudmouth Coeus, that would surely end their advances. Please, sir, take up your arms and join us in this fight!
STEADY KNIGHT: Aye — we can distract his subordinates and give you ample opportunity to cut him down. Without him, they’ll be forced to retreat! You’d save many of Ishgard’s knights and commoners from the giants’ menace, sir.

LOCALIZATION
???: Wait, I know that voice! It’s [PLAYER], the hero of the Scions!
Unbending Knight: Allow me to say what an honor it is to meet you, sir! I mean, by the Fury, the man who bested Shiva! Every knight under Lord Drillemont’s command knows the tale!
Unbending Knight: I could go on, but, well…I’ll just say it. If I may, sir&#;we need your help.
Uneasy Knight: We’ve a giant problem, sir. A band of them has taken to raiding caravans passing through Daniffen Pass. We think they may be planning to expand their territory…
Uneasy Knight: Lord Drillemont wants them gone, but you know how it is&#;too much work for too few hands. We’d need at least two dozen knights to clear them out safely…
Uneasy Knight: But now that you’re here, sir, we have nothing to fear!
Unbending Knight: Aye! While we create a distraction, you can slip past and put their leader down! Without him, they’re sure to cut and run! So will you help us, sir?

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;[PLAYER]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;…………&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

HOUSE DURENDAIRE KNIGHTS: Master [PLAYER], please lend us your strength!
HOUSE DURENDAIRE KNIGHTS: Please!
SHAKY KNIGHT: Ah, so you will help us? Thank you so much! We will surely repay you this kindness!
STEADY KNIGHT: Then we leave ourselves in your capable hands. Let us away to the battlefield.

LOCALIZATION
House Durendaire Knights: We beg of you!
House Durendaire Knights: We beg of you!
Uneasy Knight: Thank you so much, sir. We won’t forget this!
Unbending Knight: Pray accompany me to the pass, sir. We can discuss the finer details of our plan there.

&#;&#;&#;&#;………………[PLAYER]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
FRAY: …[PLAYER], why…?

LOCALIZATION
Fray: No… No more. Enough…

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;[PLAYER]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

STEADY KNIGHT: Here we are — we’ve reached our destination. The leader is likely not far.
STEADY KNIGHT: Master [PLAYER], I’ve marked your position on your map. Be on your guard, and may the Fury protect you…

LOCALIZATION
Unbending Knight: The leader should be somewhere in the tunnels, sir…
Unbending Knight: Once you are in position, we’ll launch our attack. If all goes to plan, you should only have to contend with the leader and his guards. May the Fury guide and protect us!

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;……

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;

STEADY KNIGHT: You’ve done it! You drove off Loudmouth Coeus and his minions!
STEADY KNIGHT: Truly, these are glad tidings! Our comrades elsewhere in the field can cull the rest of the giants easily now.
STEADY KNIGHT: And what’s more… forgive me my audacity, but you are really something! I’ve — I’ve been a fervent admirer of yours for a long time, ser!
STEADY KNIGHT: You came into Whitebrim Front like a howling gale, but by the Fury — not only did you settle our problems with the Stone Vigil, but you also listened to our troubles, our worries…
STEADY KNIGHT: I am merely a nameless knight, but I am deeply, truly indebted to you, ser. And — and if I might, I… i-if you would do me the honor of shaking your hand, I…

LOCALIZATION
Unbending Knight: By the Fury, you really did it! And you made it look so easy!
Unbending Knight: As for us&#;there were some injuries, but nothing serious. It was starting to look rather grim, actually…but the moment he fell, they sounded the retreat.
Unbending Knight: It was an honor to fight with you, sir! You really are everything the bards say.
Unbending Knight: Truth be told…I’ve been following your deeds for some time now…ever since you first came to Whitebrim Front.
Unbending Knight: Your martial prowess is widely known, of course, but what I found truly inspirational was your compassion for the common man.
Unbending Knight: How you would risk your life without thought for fame or fortune, how the lowest among us could find a friend in you…

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
[PLAYER]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;…………&#;

URGENT VOICE: Ser! Ser! It’s an emergency!
STEADY KNIGHT: What is it? What’s happened?
SOLEMN KNIGHT: At Whitebrim Front, ser — we’re under attack! A man clad in black armor suddenly tore through our sentries —
STEADY KNIGHT: What? Could he be a heretic?!
SOLEMN KNIGHT: I don’t know, sir! He didn’t seem like the usual sort of heretic. I don’t even know what it is that he wants from us!
SOLEMN KNIGHT: But he… he was calling [PLAYER]’s name…

LOCALIZATION
???: Sir, sir!
Unbending Knight: Is something wrong?
Untiring Knight: It’s Lord Drillemont, sir. He heard we were in the field with [PLAYER], and is demanding he come to Whitebrim Front at once!
Unbending Knight: Demanding!? What is the meaning of this!?
Untiring Knight: Certain…allegations have been made, sir. It would seem that he was observed conversing with…with a corpse in the Brume…
Untiring Knight: Not that anyone would ever believe such slander, of course…

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;[PLAYER]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;

SOLEMN KNIGHT: I did not actually expect to find [PLAYER] here when I ran for reinforcements, but…
SOLEMN KNIGHT: Perhaps he is an acquaintance of yours! Please, come with me to Whitebrim Front, before more are injured!

LOCALIZATION
Unbending Knight: Surely there is no need for concern. I mean, “conversing with a corpse”? What fools do they take us for?
Untiring Knight: I should warn you, sir, that some of these allegations were made by Temple Knights.
Untiring Knight: You, um…you may be asked to surrender your weapon…

&#;&#;&#; : ……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

FRAY: …So you’ve finally arrived.
You weren’t where you promised to be, you know…

LOCALIZATION
 Fray: Hah hah…“surrender your weapon”? After what happened in Ul'dah? They must be mad.

&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

FRAY: You didn’t listen to my advice… You’re still the same convenient “hero” youve always been. So the only choice I have left… is to take these people who take advantage of you and make them disappear.
FRAY: You understand now, don’t you? …Yes, of course you do. The friend who pushed me away at Moraby Drydocks… That man was you.

LOCALIZATION
Fray: Pay attention, [PLAYER]. This could be the greatest moment of our life…
Fray: That is, if you could stop denying the truth that’s been staring you in the face since the moment we met.

&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#; : ……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;

FRAY: I am you. The fear and hatred that you keep locked in the darkness of your heart, all the negative thoughts you deny… I am your shadow.
FRAY: You see, when you first touched that soul crystal, the darkness nurtured by the real Fray was invoked… and his lingering desire to live captured some of your aether.
FRAY: He stole not only your aether, but the darkness that lived in your heart… So I came to inhabit his body.
FRAY: And after all that time you spent pushing me away, I finally got to meet you…
FRAY: …But I’m running on borrowed time. Soon, the aether that Fray took from you will be spent. And once that happens, I will no longer be able to move this body… I will disappear once more into the darkness of your heart.
FRAY: Before that happens… I wanted you to understand how I felt. I wanted you to choose me over everyone else. But everyone… everyone keeps getting in my way!

LOCALIZATION
Fray: Say my name. Say it. My real name. Our real name!
Fray: Come now, you knew Fray was dead from the beginning, but you didn’t care!
Fray: You had a sword and a soul crystal. But what you wanted was a mentor.
Fray: A mentor with the gifts and the knowledge. A dark knight who could guide you on the path&#;who you could aspire to become.
Fray: A man who was free to say and do the things you would not.
Fray: …Even now, you continue to deny it. Well. Deny me all you want. You cannot deny what we have done.
Fray: Have I not been good to you? Have I not given you everything I promised?
Fray: Did I not help you to hear the whispers of our very soul!?
Fray: Open your eyes. Look. Do you see now? Do you see?

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

HERO’S SHADE: I want no more of this tepid kindness.
With what little I have left, I will convey to everyone my pain…
Even you… even the world that created me…
HERO’S SHADE: Now… think fast and make your choice.
Will you save the world by killing me? Or will you save the world by killing you?

The Japanese script here specifies that Fray’s last “I” is supposed to be pronounced “you” — in other words, he says “you” but he means “me.” It’s essentially untranslatable but serves to reinforce the idea that Fray is you.

LOCALIZATION
[PLAYER NAME]: Everything up to now has been your story…
[PLAYER NAME]: …And everything after now will be mine!

In the English script, the Hero’s Shade takes on your PC’s full name. Obviously, I don’t know your PC’s name, so [PLAYER NAME] will have to suffice.

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;[PLAYER NAME]&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;[PLAYER]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;…………
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

HERO’S SHADE: You wound me each and every time you give yourself to someone else… I wanted you to give yourself to me
HERO’S SHADE: My pain, my suffering, my loneliness…
Do you understand it now, [PLAYER NAME]?
DRILLEMONT THE HONEST: [PLAYER], you have my blade! I will not suffer the champion of this outpost to fight alone!
HERO’S SHADE: Champion…? You think us your champion?
HERO’S SHADE: It’s people like you… It’s your fault… It’s your fault that he can’t even accept himself!

LOCALIZATION
Esteem: You can’t really kill me, you know. Oh, you’ll try. But you’ll fail.
Esteem: You may as well put the blade at your own neck. But where would that leave us, hmmm?
Drillemont the Honest: Pull yourself together, Francel! You are stronger than this!
Esteem: Friends? Really? This is a private affair, and you know it.
Esteem: But carry on pretending otherwise, if it please.

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;[PLAYER]&#;
HERO’S SHADE: Let the pain run through you! Yes, it hurts, doesn’t it, [PLAYER]?

LOCALIZATION
Esteem: Oh, look! You’re doing it again! Bravo, [PLAYER], bravo!

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;…………&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;

HERO’S SHADE: Huff… huff… the end… is nigh…
HERO’S SHADE: Do you feel it? The pain, the hatred, the sadness you’ve suppressed…
HERO’S SHADE: The screams that never reached you… Every single part of me… I’ll make you feel it all! Until I’ve drawn my last!

LOCALIZATION
Esteem: Heh…things are certainly coming to a head, aren’t they!?
Esteem: Do you have any idea how ridiculous you look? Flailing about like a wild beast in a battle against yourself!?
Esteem: A house divided cannot stand, [PLAYER]!

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;…………&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;

HERO’S SHADE: Aah…
So this… is the end…
HERO’S SHADE: You gave me a voice, and now you take it away… Is this not… terribly ironic…?
HERO’S SHADE: That strength of yours… it makes you a hero… but it gives you so much pain. And one day… it might even claim your life…

LOCALIZATION
[PLAYER NAME] : It would seem I underestimated myself… But no matter.
[PLAYER NAME] : They have borne witness to the darkness within us…
[PLAYER NAME] : To what lies beneath the mask…

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
[PLAYER]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : [PLAYER]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;
&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……&#;

HOUSE DURENDAIRE KNIGHT: Look! Look! It’s [PLAYER]! He’s fighting against that madman!
INFIRMARY CHIRURGEON: [PLAYER]! We’re here for you! Please, don’t lose!
HOUSE DURENDAIRE KNIGHT: Y-You have my blade, if you’ve need of it! I wish only to repay you for the kindness you’ve shown us!

LOCALIZATION
???: [PLAYER]! [PLAYER]! Listen to us!
Cenota: We will never forsake you! No matter what!
Clotairion: We know who you are, [PLAYER]! We know&#;and so do you!

&#;&#;&#;&#;&#; : &#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;……
[PLAYER NAME]&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;&#;

HERO’S SHADE: So this is the fruit of your labor…
HERO’S SHADE: …Very well. I understand. You will continue to fight for others. Not because you are forced to… but because it is what you desire.
HERO’S SHADE: Yes… was that not the cause of the dark knight? To protect the weak. So in the end, this suits you well. You will surely… grow even stronger than this…
HERO’S SHADE: But with that strength comes suffering. And when you suffer — when you walk your path without showing pain — so too do I. I wanted to make you understand that, for your own sake… but this is enough…
HERO’S SHADE: [PLAYER]…?
HERO’S SHADE: I am… the part of you that could not be a hero.

PERSONAL THOUGHTS

Translation talk time, I guess.

I want to say something — I genuinely cried while translating this, which is something I’ve never done while translating anything before. I don’t know if… no, I doubt very much that anyone will have the same reaction reading my translation, because it loses a lot going from one language to another, but Japanese Fray is a really beautiful and sorrowful character, and it makes me sad that they changed him so drastically in English.

(I prefer calling him Fray rather than Esteem, by the way, even though I know that the individual known as Fray Myste is different from the Fray born from the Warrior of Light’s fractured soul. I have also used male pronouns for him throughout this translation, but I realize she is technically female if you have a female character.)

I wonder if I properly conveyed things like Fray’s loneliness, and his sadness, and his desire to run away. I think that was the part that hit me the hardest? The fact of the matter is, I hate the Warrior of Light; I hate everything that is chosen and special; I like mediocrity and insignificance. I’m the sort of person who deletes blogs if they get too popular, and who plays on low-population servers so I can generally be left alone. I like playing brand-new level 1 characters because I miss the days when we were just nameless adventurers wandering around cities helping people. I’d like to think, therefore, that I understand what Fray means when he says that he wants to go on a new journey, on an adventure with only you by his side.

So it really makes me sad that English Fray is just sort of this generic bloodthirsty edgelord, but I guess this is just what they assumed the English fanbase would prefer. And given Fray’s relative popularity, I guess this is what the English fanbase prefers…? I mean, he says some really cool shit in English, but the tone of it is completely different…

…By the way, it also really bothers me that the English script conveniently blames Fray’s rampage on Temple Knights trying to arrest you, like… What was the line of thinking there? “Well, we can’t have your dark side talking about how much they love you, so let’s blame the religious zealots again?” Look, I am a shameless Temple Knight apologist, and I will not stand for this!

EDIT: I don’t normally save my responses to questions, but since this exchange was relevant to the translation, I’ll add it here.

Thank you for this. The japanese translation is indeed beautiful. The German one is not bad either, it’s really close to the japanese actually. But in German he does not directly say “I want you to give yourself to me”, but you can feel it in his words.

I figured that was the case! The FR and DE localizations tend to stick closely to the JP script whereas the EN usually goes its own way. I do not know German, but I’m generally okay with reading stuff in French, so I usually double-check my translations against the French localization. However, for the dark knight quests, the French localization is the same as the English, so I translated purely off the Japanese without additional references.

To be honest (and I apologize for this) Fray doesn’t say “I want you to give yourself to me” in Japanese either. What he says is sort of like:

“When you worked hard for the sake of someone else [other people], I was always incredibly disgusted… I wanted to be that ‘someone’…”

but this is extremely clunky in English for a variety of reasons (the most prominent of which is that “someone” and “other people” are generally singular and plural respectively, whereas in Japanese, the word has a looser sense of plurality) so I took the liberty of making it

“You wound me each and every time you give yourself to someone else… I wanted you to give yourself to me…”

because this sounds more natural to my ear. Given the context of Fray’s extreme jealousy and borderline romantic obsession, I thought it was fine to make the idea of “working for others” sound slightly sexual with the phrase “give yourself” – the entire context of him wanting to convey his feelings to you, and wanting to kill everyone else so that he can be with you, and wanting to be one with you again is all hilariously romantic/sexual anyway, so I didn’t think I was crossing any lines by doing this.

Anyway, you didn’t ask for such a long-winded explanation of that line, but this is generally just how I work! Sorry!

Heavensward: How to Unlock FFXIV Dark Knight &#; Beginner Tips

How To and Where To Unlock FFXIV’s Dark Knight Job

FFXIV Dark Knight

Dark Knight is an exciting new tank class released in Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward that uses magic to not only hold hate, but inflict pain onto enemies. However before we get into explaining how FFXIV‘s Dark Knight works, we first have to explain how to even unlock it.

First things first, you need to be at least level 30 in a Disciple of War or Magic class to begin the quest and have access to Ishgard. This may be obvious to most, but if you just picked up FFXIV: Heavensward and were looking forward to starting right away as a Dark Knight, that unfortunately won’t be possible.

Unlike the other new Job quests that are easily found by just looking at the Ishgard map for an appropriate marking, the FFXIV Dark Knight job quest is well-hidden. First, find the Ishgardian Citizen at coordinates (13,8) near the tribunal to begin the quest.

After a short exchange, you’ll be on your way to meet your new mentor. Speak to the Punctilious Temple Knight to trigger a cutscene where you will meet Fray, your connection to the FFXIV Dark Knight world. After this cutscene is over, you will have unlocked the Dark Knight, congratulations!

However, stopping here and jumping right to it would be foolish. There is a Job quest to tackle right after completing the unlock quest. It can be surprisingly challenging if you don’t employ the right strategy. It’s important that you get through it though as Darkside, the ability that you unlock as a reward, is an extremely important one. With that, let’s break down the next quest, Ishgardian Justice.

Darkside and Your First Job Quest: Ishgardian Justice

FFXIV Dark Knight

Go ahead and switch over to Dark Knight and begin following the steps for Isghardian Justice. You won’t have to go far and the Lowborn Crone that you are looking for is clearly marked on the map. Fray has some choice words for the corrupt Temple Knights and is counting on you to help dish out justice.

Follow the steps for the quest (everything is clearly marked on the map and is easy to find) until you meet the Pernicious Temple Knight to begin an instanced battle.

Now this one can be tricky and you’re going to need everything at your disposal to pull it off successfully. FFXIV Dark Knights don’t have any native curing or healing abilities until you unlock Souleater at level Luckily, Fray will be there to take care of the curing for you. However, Fray doesn’t cure as fast as you would like usually, so the onus is on you to get the job done. Finally, it is important to keep in mind that you are the tank in this scenario, not Fray. Make sure to use Unleash to keep all of the enemies on you, and off of Fray. Fray has more health than your average healer but won’t be able to hold out forever.

The first group of enemies are easy, so clear them quickly, making sure to avoid their AoE attacks at all costs, and three flames will appear. When you touch these flames, you will get a stacking buff that will increase your damage dealt and reduce the damage you take. However, you can only handle about two stacks at a time, otherwise you will be killed. Grab two and then move onto the next group of enemies.

There is a White Mage enemy, Ishgardian Chirugeon, that should be taken down first. Hit it with your Hard Slash combo and then use Low Bow to stun its Cure. It should be dead before it ever gets a chance to try and Cure again. With the White Mage out of the way, you should be able to quickly dispatch of the other enemies. Again, just be sure to avoid their AoE attacks as getting nailed by them will reduce your HP to a point where Fray has a hard time keeping up. If your darkness stack levels are low, replenish them by hitting the flames before moving on. Just be careful not to grab too much.

Move into the final room and employ the same strategy used above. Kill the Ishgardian Chirugeon first, then clear the other adds, and finally the boss knight, Pernicious Temple Knight. More adds will spawn while you’re fighting him. Move off the Pernicious Temple Knight when they appear, take out the Ishgardian Chirugeon first, then the others, then back onto the Pernicious Temple Knight. Keep the pressure on by using your DoT attack Scourge while mixing in Reprisal when you can and you should be able to take out the Pernicious Temple Knight in no time.

Once you’ve defeated the Pernicious Temple Knight, you’ve all but completed the quest and will have unlocked Darkside, an important ability that we will get to shortly. Your next quest is at level 35 and will be given by Fray where you first met.

With all of that out of the way, let’s talk strategy going into your first dungeon as a Dark Knight.

How to Play as a FFXIV Dark Knight

FFXIV Dark Knight

If you’ve ever played any of the other tank classes before, there will be some things about FFXIV’s Dark Knight that do look familiar. However, Darkside adds an element of MP management that doesn’t exist with the other tanks, Paladin and Warrior. Let’s start with the basics first though.

During dungeons, you’re usually going to be fighting groups of two to three enemies more. Pull these enemies using your ranged attack Unmend, which has the added benefit of increasing your enmity (or hate if you prefer). Once the enemies are grouped together, regularly hit them with Unleash, which dishes out AoE damage that also increases enmity. Be careful though, as Unleash does drain your MP. Once you’ve got all the enemies together (and pointed away from the other party members, especially the healer), begin your Hard Slash -> Spinning Slash combo which quickly builds enmity on a single target.

Now FFXIV’s Dark Knight has two stances that can both be used at the same time but have very different functions. The first is Grit, which is similar to Shield Oath on Paladin. It will reduce your damage but greatly increase your enmity generation and reduces your damage taken. This should always be on if you’re main tanking (read: any four man dungeon). Next is the ability you just unlocked, Darkside. Darkside rapidly drains your MP but in return increases your damage. With this on, you can greatly aid your team’s damage per second (DPS) but you’ll need to keep your MP intake high to maintain this.

While in Darkside, the only way to reliably refresh your MP is by using Syphon Strike after Hard Slash instead of Spinning Slash. The problem is, this messes with your enmity generation. The trick is to start off by building hate with Unleash and Hard Slash -> Spinning Slash (with Darkside on if you’re starting with high MP), but then once you have hate pretty much locked, start using Syphon Strike after Hard Slash instead, mixing in Spinning Slash everyone in a while if your MP is high. By doing this, you can offset the damage that is reduced by Grit while still maintaining all of its benefits.

While that’s going to be your combo rotation of sorts, there are other important abilities to mix in as well. Low Blow is an off GCD (read: doesn’t count towards your cooldown timer) Stun, but does have a cooldown before it can be used again. Stunning deadly AoEs are crucial to surviving tough fights as a FFXIV‘s Dark Knight.

Shadowskin reduces your damage taken and can be combined with Reprisal (which can be used after a successsful parry) to provide some quality damage mitigation. Finally, Scourge should be used as much as possible to keep DoT on your enemy and increase your party’s overall DPS.

And that just about does it as far as beginner Dark Knight tips are concerned in FFXIV: Heavensward. As you level up, you’ll acquire new abilities that you’ll need to work into your rotation. But as long as you understand the basics, you’ll be in a great position to learn how to use these new abilities with ease!

FFXIV 3.0 0641 Dark Knight Unlock Guide

When I tell people an MMO has given me some of the most memorable and amazing stories I’ve ever experienced, disbelief is the typical answer. Which isn’t really surprising, it’s not a genre known for this sort of thing. Final Fantasy 14 really is a surprising thing, though, and if you talk to anyone really into it, the story is likely to be one of the most talked about elements that really elevates it all to greatness. But… that’s not exactly why I’m here. You can find so many people talking about why they love the stories told, and honestly, I’d just be repeating the praises so many have sung already. No, I want to get a little more personal, and I want to talk about how personal indeed an MMO has gotten with me. They will say I am one, I will say we are two, and I want to talk about why the Dark Knight sidequests in FFXIV are so incredibly meaningful to me.

Final Fantasy 14 isn’t usually an experience that skews very much towards role-playing. There’s a story to be told, and making choices is hardly going to work when a persistent, identical world for all is needed. That makes it all the more interesting when the script does indeed decide to flesh out the player character’s place in the world, even if only indirectly, and that’s exactly what the dark knight quests set out to do. If the player can’t define themselves through choice, why not manifest an element related to them, and let them understand how the experiences may have impacted the character they inhabit? That’s the underlying principle of the dark knight quests: you seemingly meet a mentor in the job: Fray. Through the course of the quests, however, you learn that Fray is not a separate entity from you, but a manifestation of darkness, hurt, and unhappiness born from you, manifesting as, well… another personality. The expansions explore this further, introducing you to another person born of you, Myste, a child who only wishes to end the suffering and sacrifice of others. Throughout the quests, you explore and understand who these people are, why they exist at all, and ultimately… accepting them.

I’m sure I don’t need to explain what this is analogous to in the real world: plurality. The experience of sharing a physical body with others is something many live with, and it’s something media loves to tackle… with typically disastrous results. I’ve written about the bad and contrasted it to some good before, and I’d probably be repeating myself if I gave the whole run down on it again. Needless to say, though, media representing DID, plurality, it tends to see it as a scary, harmful thing that leads to unstable, untrustworthy, and broken people. That’s just not true, though: plurality is a simple fact of the mind for many, some do of course struggle with it, but many others also embrace and enrich themselves from it. I’m one of those people, part of a system, and to see media constantly demonize or, at best, describe plurality in cold and clinical terms has never been fun, not for me nor for the others I live with.

The Dark Knight quests sure do seem to start from that sort of problematic assumption: a dark force born from your mind? Stop me if you’ve heard that tired cliche before. But the game refuses to ever write Fray this way: they’re a person, first and foremost, a person that’s part of you. Fray isn’t some dark force that only wants destruction, they’re someone simply fed up with the world seemingly using you over and over, and angry at those constant begging for your assistance, putting you in ever more danger. They just… want to protect you, at the end of the day. And the quests know this, and make that fundamental aspect of caring is core to the entire emotional hook of the story. Fray is lashing out, afraid, afraid of what you might do to yourself, angry at the world for letting it happen, and at the end of the quests, knowing all that, you accept them for it. You let them exist as part of you at the end of the first part, accepting them, caring for them, and not turning your back on them. These quests start out, seemingly cold, confusing, and poised to repeat harmful tropes, but they turn their back on all that, letting the fundamental emotion of caring carry the story to a conclusion. Fray is Fray, you are you, and that’s something that’s not easy to accept in the story of the quest: but it’s worth doing.

When I first experienced this part, I was honestly taken aback. It’s not often you see media honestly tackle the idea of another self within a person being something they can legitimately struggle with, not just a malicious force. Plurality… isn’t easy, for a lot of people, certainly it hasn’t been a cakewalk for us. We’ve had to struggle with understanding who we are, fear of rejection, fuzzy memory gaps, weird emotions that are hard to control, headmates who feel traumatized and afraid, who gets to front and when, the space we all have to try to find in the life of one body. To see those sorts of difficulties vocalized by a game was already something unexpected: to then see those difficulties framed as understandable and worthy of compassion was something else altogether. Nobody in the story is a monster, just like systems in real life are in no way monsters: but sometimes we’re confused, sometimes we’re scared, sometimes we’ll lash out. What’s important is acceptance, and working with those scary feelings and confronting them. Fray is worthy of acceptance. And learning to accept others alongside us is something so many plural people have experienced.

I didn’t just want the struggle of acceptance, though: I’ve also experienced the joy of being more than one, of the new perspectives it’s given me, of the strength it’s let me forge. That’s part of the Dark Knight quests too. From levels , you experience much the same sort of story, with Myste being another person born from you, and wanting you to stop fighting in the name of pacifism. But there’s a key difference at the end: Fray is still there, and Fray gives you strength, understanding, and power to help cope with this new person. From here, the job itself plays into this, letting you summon a dark shadow of Fray to help you fight alongside you. And in the capstone to the quests at the moment, there’s no fighting: just a quiet reflection of your development with Fray existing with you. How you two have changed each other, how you two have helped each other, and how existing alongside each other hasn’t just been a struggle: it’s been genuinely rewarding. The final words from this questline are from Fray, and sum it all up: “I love you more than you’ll ever know. Be well.”

What struck me about these quests wasn’t the aspect of a struggle or being enriching alone, it was them both being together in the same story about someone else as part of you. In how it expressed the emotions of an experience similar to plurality, it spoke more honestly, openly, and compassionately than most stories that even directly broach the topic. It acknowledges completely that it can be hard and messy, and at the same time acknowledges how enriching acceptance can be, how empowering it can be to embrace this aspect of a self. And to me, most importantly, it acknowledged the deep caring and love that can exist between members of a system. Most stories simply don’t do that: a headmate is an other to them, a scary unknowable entity that you shouldn’t trust or care for. But here, you struggle, but then at the end, you accept, you find strength, and you care for Fray. That’s the most honest story ever about the emotionality of experiences like this that I’ve ever seen. Being more than one person, frankly, is not easy, but it’s not suffering. There’s a lot of caring and new experiences to it all. I, we, don’t want to pretend like it’s sunshine and rainbows: but there is so much good to be found in embracing the different ways in which our mind works. The fact that a story can talk about that so honestly and openly is what made this quest stick with all of us. We’re not broken, we struggle and find joy like any other person, and seeing that reflected was so nice.

I’m not going to pretend like this questline is literally perfect or a brilliant representation of plurality. Obviously it’s all in metaphor, not directly talking about these experiences. I truly do want more stories openly talking about plurality instead of just hiding it behind a metaphor similar to it. The dark knight quests are ultimately not talking about plurality, and I wouldn’t call it representation quite honestly. But… it did still say something important to me, show me that stories can honestly reflect the emotions all of us had to go through. And that’s why this questline matters to me so much, why they hold so much meaning to me. Most stories won’t even approach this level of empathy for experiences metaphorically related to plurality. This one cares, even in metaphor, and I’ll never really forget about it for that. The world will insist I am one. I will say we are more than that. In this small little corner of an MMO, I can find some understanding, and some caring in what it says. That will always be important to us.
