History Channel’s Mountain Men aims to teach basic survival skills in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Three years ago, on July 24, 2017, one of the main cast members, Preston Roberts, died, and Eustace Conway still mourns his friend today.

Roberts died with his wife and family at his side at 60 years old. The naturalist was known for his love for the outdoors and his commitment to teaching. He died from complications from a liver tumor.

Mountain Men follows the lives and struggles of several families as they live off the grid in Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Maine and North Carolina. The show airs on Thursday nights at 9 p.m.

Conway Said Preston’s Support Was the “Best Thing” He Ever Had in His Life

In a tribute written for the Turtle Island Preserve, Eustace Conway wrote about how he felt about losing his best friend and talked about his support and friendship in his life.

“Because Preston was such a giving, supportive person, he helped many thousands of students and friends, always improving their life,” Conway wrote.

Conway continued, saying that he had never met a more genuine person than his best friend and had never witnessed a man who loved his wife “more generously and completely and committedly than Preston loved Kathleen.”

He called for donations to the GoFundMe in honor of Roberts and thanked everyone who had already donated, saying that they used some of the donated money to fix the leaking roof on Roberts’ house.

Conway Said Roberts Was One of “The Most Manly Men” He Ever Met

In the tribute to his friend, Conway said Roberts was “one of the most manly men” he’d ever met and said he would want him at his back in any fight.

“Yet I want to leave you with a rare and intimate photograph of Preston half-naked in winter, wearing a pink tutu trying to bring a smile to the face of his beloved wife Kathleen as she was battling her own cancer,” he wrote. “His plan worked! She smiled, and made it. Preston’s love for Kathleen and good work knew no boundaries.”

He finished the post with a quote about crying, and said he was still crying about the unexpected death of his friend.

Conway also shared a photo of his best friend on Facebook after passing, leaving a message with the post.

“Rest easy Preston James Roberts,” he wrote. “Due to complications from an inoperable tumor on his liver, Preston Roberts took his last breath at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, July 24, 2017 – in the arms of his beloved wife Kathleen, surrounded by family and loved ones.”

He wrote that the loss they were feeling was “indescribable” and said that Turtle Island would host a celebration of life ceremony for the Mountain Man.

In one of the first episodes of season 7, the first season of Mountain Men without his friend by his side, Conway struggled. He was still reeling from the loss of his right-hand man and was having a hard time working their lumber business alone. He couldn’t meet orders without assistance.

Camp announcement of Preston’s passing:

On July 24th, 2017 at 3:30pm, Preston James Roberts passed peacefully away in the arms of his wife Kathleen, surrounded by family and loved ones. Preston had a large inoperable tumor on his liver that obstructed the flow of blood and oxygen to his organs and body. The change was rapid and outpaced any treatment -- just three weeks prior he was teaching at Boys Camp. While the suddenness of his departure is shocking, we draw some consolation from the fact that his last days were full of family and friends instead of drawn-out suffering.

There is no replacing a human life, and the specialness of Preston as teacher, mentor, builder, friend, artist, elder, inspiration, dancer, leader, and solid rock foundation leaves a chasm in our community. Preston was as practical as he was creative, and over any abyss he would find a way to build a bridge whose quality was matched only by its beauty. He lived for summer camp, and his life and spirit are infused all over Turtle Island, in the buildings, the ceremonies, the land, and the misty mountain air itself. Help us build a bridge and honor his life by ensuring that Turtle Island camps continue far into the future, whether that means lighting a candle on December 24th, sponsoring a camper, or lending a hand in one of the many building projects Preston had planned for the upcoming year.

Preston was laid to rest on the north side of the medicine wheel atop Morning Watch Hill, right in the heart of camp.
We leave you with Preston's words from this past year's holiday message to campers:

"It's cold this morning, the sun is just peeking its head above the mountain. I wonder what it is like at Morning Watch this morning? I wish I was there, this moment, curled in a thick wool blanket, watching the light, birds, and in my minds eye I am there, with you and the others that have carried your stone and placed it in that sacred circle of stones. In my minds eye I can sail through the trees, past the tree-house, classroom, the gazebo and your shoes, over the patch on the barn roof, over the spot we plan to build a traditional carpentry shop, sweeping high into the cold air alongside a raven, looking at the place we love below and wishing for it to continue forever..."

Much love, indescribable gratitude, and, as always, still learning...

Who Died on Mountain Men? How Did Preston Roberts Die?

‘Mountian Men‘ is a unique reality show because not only is it designed like a survival show, but also a lifestyle series in many ways. It documents the day-to-day lives of a group of people who live away from the luxuries of modern life and fully embrace nature. It showcases the hardships of living such a lifestyle and also how rewarding it can be.

Over the show’s nine seasons (and counting), many mountain men have become fan favorites and have left fans in awe of their skills, philosophy, and determination. However, one such popular cast member passed away a few years ago. If you are looking for more information about the same, look no further! Here’s which cast member of ‘Mountain Men’ died and the cause of their death.

Who Died on Mountain Men?

‘Mountain Men’ documents the grueling challenges faced by the various people living in the wilderness. These people reside in isolated properties and depend on their knowledge, survival skills, and nature for a living. At times, they are forced to face extreme weather conditions or other challenges that can be potentially life-threatening. However, most of the cast members are seasoned survivalists and very well know how to handle such situations. Although no one has died because of the challenges they faced on the show, a key cast member did pass away in 2017. Preston Roberts, who regularly appeared on the show alongside good friend Eustace Conway is sadly no longer with us.

How Did Preston Roberts Die?

Preston Roberts first appeared in the third episode of season one titled ‘Lost.’ Roberts and his camaraderie with Conway is a highlight of the show’s first six seasons. The two men were lifelong friends and often helped out each other during difficult times, be it emotionally or financially. The strong-willed Roberts was born on July 17, 1957, in Westfield, New Jersey, and was brought up in Brevard, North Carolina. He harbored a passion for exploration and adventure from a young age. He studied at Atlantic Christian College before heading off to Appalachian State University.

Roberts worked as a teacher at the Wikes County School for nearly twenty-five years and shared his knowledge and skills of survival with his students. He also co-founded the Turtle Island Preserve, an outdoor education center, where he spent most of his time when not working on the reality series.

On July 24, 2017, a week after turning sixty, Roberts passed away in the presence of his loving wife Kathleen, three children, and Conway. Roberts had been diagnosed with cancer, and the resulting tumor that caused complications in his liver ended up claiming his life. A memorial service was held for Roberts at Turtle Island Preserve. He rests in peace at the Morning Watch Hill Cemetery in Boone.

The sixth season finale titled ‘To Every Thing There Is a Season’ is Roberts’ last appearance on the show. The series has paid tribute to the former cast member, and most of the episodes he appeared in season 6 are dedicated to his memory. His legacy continues through the Turtle Island Preserve. Roberts’ best friend, Eustace Conway, penned a heartfelt note to his beloved pal through a Facebook post. When not in teaching and with some time to kill, Roberts made himself busy with music. He was interested to keep learning and had understudied the Native American people’s music and hence became a contemporary singer and dancer. He loved making his hands dirty in his big organic garden and also kept chickens and horses. In 2012, he made the biggest move of his life by appearing on the reality television show ‘Mountain Men’ where he became loved and famous.

Personal life and wife
