The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion may be 15 years old, but an active player base is keeping the flame burning. Here are 15 of the best Oblivion mods that every PC player needs to have.
Oblivion is the fourth instalment in the hyper-popular Elder Scrolls series, following Morrowind and predating Skyrim. Released initially in 2006 for PC and Xbox 360, then in 2007 for PlayStation 3, it was one of the generation’s most successful and dearly loved games. Despite its age and despite so many comparing Oblivion vs Skyrim retroactively, there are many people playing the game today, and it’s largely due to the vast amount of Oblivion mods on offer.
Any game that opens itself up so willingly to mods is going to get a little weird, for sure. However, once you push past the devious and the bizarre, there are a ton of mods that add value to the game in meaningful ways – lore-friendly or otherwise. From graphical updates to full-on overhauls of the game’s fundamental systems, there’s an Oblivion mod for that.
The best Oblivion mods are what keeps players coming back, allowing for new playthroughs wherein the game feels almost entirely new, or you’re able to build a character unlike anything you’ve played before. That’s why today, we’re listing some of our absolute favourites of all time.
For the sake of highlighting some more interesting options, we’re not including any Unofficial Patches, script extenders, or mod managers such as Wyre Bash or Oblivion Mod Manager in this list. If you’re modding Oblivion, you should simply be using these.
Qarls Texture Pack III
Out of all the texture packs available in the Oblivion mods database, Quarls Texture Pack II is the finest. It updates a huge amount of the game’s textures to be four times larger than the originals, bringing it much more in line with what contemporary PCs can handle.
With this texture pack, Oblivion will feel sharper, newer, and much less two-dimensional. It covers pretty much everything save for clothing, armour, weapons, creatures, NPCs, foliage, the sky, Kvatch, the Oblivion Arena, and the Oblivion realm – all of which are popular targets for other graphical packs.

Oblivion Character Overhaul V2
Since Qarls Texture Pack doesn’t include playable characters and NPCs, you’ll want to grab the Oblivion Character Overhaul V2 to make the in-game models a little less… potato.
Oblivion’s famously awful character creation is definitely lacking, and this mod picks it up as far as the game’s engine will allow it to go. Combine it with a good enough Oblivion animation mod, and you’ll have a character that’s far easier on the eyes – and a little closer to reality.
The mod completely reworks character heads throughout the game, including all races – even Dremoras and Shivering Isles races. New hairstyles, eye textures, and more are included, made to look as in line with Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls Online as possible (unlike the great many anime-ish character overhauls you’ll find).
As this one’s quite a complex mod, make sure you read all instructions on the Nexus page before installing it.
Midas Magic Spells of Aurum
Midas Magic adds over 300 new spells to the game, greatly building upon the base game’s magic system and getting major props for style points. This Oblivion mod adds beam spells, projectiles, a ton of new Conjuration summons, and more.
Like the Skyrim Midas Magic mod, this add-on attempts to stay relatively lore-friendly and hopefully not too game-breaking. For the most powerful spells the mod adds, you’ll even have to undertake short quests to prove you’re worthy.

Alternate Start Oblivion: Arrive by Ship
If you’ve been playing with Oblivion mods as long as some players have, there’s a good chance you’re completely sick of the standard starting sequence. There’s only so many times you can live through the Imperial Prison tutorial, after all.
Alternate Start Oblivion instead places you as captain of a ship arriving in Cyrodiil (either to the Imperial City or Anvil) and lets you choose from a range of character options similar to a classic RPG background generation. You can be a wealthy merchant, a priest, skilled craftsman, and more, all feeding into the possessions you’ll receive upon starting the game.
One thing to note is that the mod doesn’t allow for many evil character options – thankfully mod creator Robert_evrae has a lore-friendly explanation behind this decision.
Oblivion Randomiser Project
If you like Oblivion mods that institute a little chaos, this pocket of insanity will be right up your alley. The Oblivion Randomiser Project does what it says on the box, randomising as many elements of Oblivion as possible. Meet a high-level enemy in the tutorial! Find a useless steel sword after trawling through a tough dungeon! It’s all a bit wacky, but that’s what’s so good about this mod.
The project is ongoing, and uploader aAaZzZ000oOo is still actively dropping comments updates into the Nexus page. So far “levelled lists and a small portion of NPC’s equipment and spells” have been randomised, but more is in the works.

Another mod Skyrim players may find somewhat familiar, Immersive Weapons adds an absolute trove of interesting new weaponry to the game. One of the must-have Oblivion mods, it pushes the weapon loot tables far past their usual homogeny, kitting out NPCs and your character alike with cutlasses, spears, mauls, and more.
Hundreds of weapons are added by this mod, even including off-hand variants for dual-wielding characters. The new weapons are balanced not to be too strong, and they’re fully integrated into merchant tables, on enemies, and into the loot you’ll find when exploring Cyrodiil.

Unique Landscapes Oblivion
If you’re looking for pure bang for your buck, Unique Landscapes Oblivion is one of the best Oblivion mods out there. As the name suggests, it compiles 28 other mods that change up Cyrodiil’s landscapes in diverse and interesting ways.
Like the best mods, this is one you’ll hardly notice while playing, rather you’ll stumble upon one of these unique locations naturally.

Another huge Oblvion mod, Better Dungeons overhauls every cave in the game save for a few that can’t be screwed with due to quests. New features include updated lighting and set pieces, brand new puzzles and rewards, hidden treasures and more.
The scope of this mod is frankly enormous – authors Scot and WalkerInShadows have poured a ton of time and love into Better Dungeons and it shows. Each changed dungeon has a few more layers than its base game counterpart, so look out for those secrets!

Oblivion Enhanced Camera
Enhanced Camera is a mod that forces the game into first-person play, meaning that any actions such as sitting or dying will be stuck in a first-person view. Yes, this can get a little janky, especially if you die in a wacky position or fall off something quite high, but it adds a definite layer of immersion and something new to a playthrough.
And most importantly, if you look down you can see your body. Amazing, isn’t it?

Oblivion Scaling Unclusterfucked
It’s worth a mention for the name alone, but Oblivion Scaling Unclusterfucked brings some much-needed sanity to the game’s scaling elements such as enemy placement, weapon and armour numbers, and more.
Wondering why you never saw a goblin once you magically scaled past a certain level? Or maybe why your exceptionally hard-to-get sword has now been outclassed by something a bandit dropped? This mod generally fixes those out-of-place, immersion-breaking moments, and makes the game’s toughest rewards actually useful beyond your next few levels.

A nice and simple immersion add-on, Illumination Within adds interior nighttime lighting to most of the buildings you encounter throughout Cyrodiil. When you think about it, all those city lights shouldn’t be off at night, should they?
Various scripts control the lighting of different buildings too, meaning that inns where patrons are getting snuffed on ales all night long will be lit differently to residential buildings or shops. A simple mod, delivered effectively.

Vaults of Cyrodiil
One of the finer Oblivion mods for those of you who attune to the Thief Stone, Vaults of Cyrodiil adds a nigh-impossible vault to plunder in each of the main cities (Anvil, Bravil, Bruma, Cheydinhal, Chorrol, Leyawiin, and Skingrad), as well as two in Kvatch and the Imperial City Marketplace District.
As you should expect for vaults of such a high stature, they are designed to be very difficult to break into, and should only be attempted by high-level players. Keys will be necessary, multiple guards patrol each location night and day, and you’ll have to do some sneaking to even get to the vault locations.
That said, the rewards are well worth it. Gold, unique items tuned to each location and their respective count or countess, and more await any master thief who can weave their way inside. Download Vaults of Cyrodiil here.
Upscaled Loading Screens
This mod piggybacks a few other successful loading screen mods – Vanilla Style Loading Screens and Moo Loading Screens, both by laulajatar – and upscales them to glorious 2K or 4K resolutions.
If you’re playing on a newer PC and want to enjoy crisp loading screens to compliment your rig, this is the mod for you.

Wear Hoods to Hide Your Identity
Continuing down the thread of thief-centric Oblivion mods, Wear Hoods to Hide Your Identity is nicely complimentary to Vaults of Cyrodiil. Using the effect created by wearing the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal, this mod adds a number of hoods to the game that will hide your identity from guards and other witnesses to any crimes you commit.
While it may trivialise certain encounters in the game, it can add a nice bit of real-world immersion to particularly criminal playthroughs – or even a playthrough where a good-willed character needs to temporarily break the rules.

Simple Shields on Back
What can we say? It does what it says on the box. Simple Shields on Back is a less script-heavy alternative to the popular Tycho’s Shields on Back mod, meaning it will play friendlier with the rest of your load order, likely saving you from a potential crash here and there.
It allows you to equip a shield on your player character’s back (not companions), a nice visual upgrade to the base game.

On a practical level Oblivion Character Overhaul 2 gives every race and gender their own head mesh and textures. They all also have age slider variations and a couple of new hairstyles replacing vanilla ones. Visually the heads have been prepped with up-to-date character modeling conventions and have proper sculpted normal maps and lively skin textures. I made the head meshes unique for every playable race and gender and there's a lot of distinction between them - you can tell them apart at a glance. In some cases I've made bigger adjustments to multiple head parts, such as scaling down Orc jaws and repositioning Khajiit teeth in the head.
To install this project use Nexus Mod Manager.
Warning: Oblivion Character Overhaul 2 requires you to have Blockhead and Oblivion Script Extender � OBSE mods installed. It will not work properly without them.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remains beloved by fans to this very day. However, no game is ever perfect. Whether it's due to frustrating bugs or broken quests, every title has its share of problems. Furthermore, Oblivion has been showing its age now for quite some time.

How does one go about fixing these problems? Mods. And there just so happens to be thousands of them for Oblivion. In addition to fixing bugs or making the graphics look better, there also exists plenty of mods that add brand new content to the experience. Some of these examples may just be interesting enough to entice a player to reinstall this classic blast-from-the-past.
10 Oblivion Character Overhaul
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is a great game. Nevertheless, there's not getting around the fact that graphics-wise, it looks pretty bad by now. In particular, the NPCs look atrocious, with their dead eyes and barely moving faces.
Enter Oblivion Character Overhaul. This mod, literally, gives every character a much-needed facelift. NPCs appear less like talking potatoes and more like something a player might find in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The level of detail is nothing short of beautiful. Talking to people can once again become an enjoyable experience.
9 Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul
Once Oblivion looks better it's time to start improving the gameplay itself. Maskar's Oblivion Overhaul is a fantastic all-in-one mod that adds a plethora of new features, fixes, and content. Among other things, it helps make Cyrodiil feel more like a living, breathing world.
Some of its features include better combat AI, a crafting system, notice boards, animal taming, and new enemies. Interestingly, no game files need to be replaced when installing this mod, although the Oblivion Script Extender will still be needed. Check out the mod's readme file for a complete list of its colossal amount of features.
8 Vanilla Combat Enhanced
Don't expect a Dark Souls level of complexity when it comes to combat in an Elder Scrolls game. The combat mechanics in Oblivion weren't exactly groundbreaking when the game first released and has aged even more poorly since then.

Vanilla Combat Enhanced does exactly what its name suggests. It makes the combat more intuitive without changing it into something completely different. Oblivion will still feel like an Elder Scrolls game, but with a more challenging twist. For example, enemies are no longer gluttons for punishment, but will be smarter and often deadlier if the player isn't careful.
7 Knights Of The Nine Revelation
Certain modding teams undoubtedly possess tremendous talent. Open-world titles like Oblivion often receive modded story content. In some cases, these add-on adventures inject a startling amount of content to a game. One may even mistake a few of them for an official DLC pack.
Knights of the Nine Revelation is a perfect example. Taking its cue from the popular Knights of the Nine DLC the mod adds a massive amount of new material. It adds new items, quests, followers, fully-voiced NPCs, and much more. If some players were unwilling to lay down their Divine Crusader gear, then this is the mod for them.
6 Oblivion Uncut
The games in The Elder Scrolls series are massive. Hundreds of hours of content is packed together to form the whole experience. Inevitably, there's always bits of material that get left on the cutting room floor. Some of it may never see the light of day, but some mods manage to resurrect this lost material to its intended glory.
Oblivion, unsurprisingly, has its fair share of cut content. That's where Oblivion Uncut comes to the rescue. It restores bits and pieces of content that, for some reason or another, wasn't included in the final product. New NPCs, quests, locations, shops, and dialogue are restored thanks to this little gem of a mod.
5 Dark Brotherhood Chronicles
Dark Brotherhood Chronicles is yet another DLC-sized mod. This one adds new content for the Dark Brotherhood, one of the vanilla game's most popular guilds. For the player, their Listener's bloody rise to power doesn't end with the execution of Mathieu Bellamont. More intrigue and assassinations await...

The mod aims to give the player more choices when deciding how to complete its quests. The freedom to roleplay is given a much higher priority in this mod. It's a great piece of unique content that fans of the Dark Brotherhood will love sinking their blades into.
4 Better Dungeons
There's quite a bit of exploring in Oblivion. Dark caves and dank dungeons often serve as frequent points of interest to the player. After a few hours, veteran spelunkers will start to realize something. Most dungeons in Oblivion lack uniqueness. Maps are frequently recycled or rearranged with not a whole lot to distinguish them from each other.
Better Dungeons attempts to solve that problem. Caves and dungeons now contain little "stories"to them, much in the vein of Skyrim, that make each one more unique. Some locations even contain new treasures to find and puzzles that go with them. Definitely a must-have mod when starting a new playthrough.
3 Better Cities
It's one thing to improve Oblivion's dungeons, but what about its cities? It's important to remember that the word "city" is used rather loosely regarding Oblivion. The areas are quite small and never contain a very sizeable population. This is due, of course, to the limits of technology at the time.
Mods like Better Cities seek to improve upon those shortcomings. Make no mistake, Better Cities is a mammoth mod, ambitious in its scope. Every city in Cyrodiil is given a logical redesign in a very lore-friendly manner. Additional NPCs also populate these locations, making everything feel more alive.
2 Guild Advancement
For roleplaying purists, this is a must-have mod. It serves to add a dose of logic and realism to the vanilla guild questlines. Case in point, some players may find it jarring that a pure warrior, with very little magical knowledge, can effectively become the Arch-Mage. Guild Advancement puts a stop to that nonsense.
Actual effort is now required to be put into the requisite skills in order to advance. The mod adds a new progression system that makes the player feel like they are achieving actual progress. New quests are included to give players more opportunities to hone their skills before being promoted to the next rank.
1 Mysterious Bear's Epic Necromancy
Speaking of roleplaying, some players may enjoy living the life of a necromancer. If that's the case, however, the vanilla magic system in Oblivion leaves a lot to be desired. Fortunately, Mysterious Bear's Epic Necromancy can make a roleplayer's dream a reality.
The mod adds a new skill to the game: necromancy. Improving the skill won't make the player particularly popular around Cyrodiil. Bodies can be harvested, graves can be robbed, and unholy altars can be prayed upon. Undead minions can now be summoned and commanded at will. Playing an evil sorcerer never felt so good.

OCO 1.2 is out! Refined skin textures a lot and rebuilt some normal maps. Things generally look nicer now.
OCO is pretty much the amalgamation of all the things I've seen people wishing for in terms of improvements to Oblivions' character system. It's a huge, comprehensive visual revamp of all playable races and NPCs in the game. I've built the mod from scratch only using Bethesda meshes as starting points and a few essential resources such as Throttlekitty's eyelashes.
What does OCO do?
-Splits the nonbeast races up into using their own unique headmeshes and individualized face texture sets
-Refines beast races' looks and introduces sculpted HD normal maps and detailed textures
-Elves are pushed into looking more distinct, with angular facial features, longer ears and cultural details
-Overhauls the age slider to a more gradually paced aging for all races, with prominent wrinkling overlays starting later
-Adds a large number of new face textures built out of HD photos and handpainting
-Adds facial fur pattern options for Khajiit
-Introduces black-sclera eye options for Wood Elves and more eye colours for Khajiit
-Rebuilds over 80% of Oblivion NPCs' faces to take full advantage of the new assets
-Builds on the visual canon and art direction established in Morrowind and Skyrim
-Adds eyelashes to human and elf races
-Makes creating appealing playable characters quick and effortless
I can with full sincerity say OCO completely changes how Oblivion looks and feels. All NPCs are now easier on the eyes. The ones that were previously ugly are still ugly, but I've vastly reduced the amount of plainly disproportionate cartoonishly exaggerated heads.
OCO works straight out of the box and requires no other mods to achieve the looks shown in the screenshots, but I've also provided optional extra files for neckseam compatibility textures for the more popular body mods. Unfortunately due to the nature of the mod (textures being shared between genders) some seams will inevitably be there - but I've integrated parts of both Luchaire's body seam replacer and Optimized Fagegen Files into OCO.
This is where I have some bad news. OCO is a different kind of beast than most visual mods and does a lot of things at once, so expect compatibility problems with other mods that do any of the following:
-Face texture replacers
-Racial stat modification
-Adding hair or eyes to vanilla races
-Modifying vanilla NPCs
-Altering filepaths or any other appearance features in vanilla races
Hair and eyes aside OCO is designed so you don't need to run any other vanilla-altering racemods. It's a necessary tradeoff for the degree of changes OCO does, and it merges a lot of the changes you'd usually have to use 10 different mods for. I do however strongly encourage user intiiative in making compatibility patches - I would gladly host them under OCO's files.
Going forward: OCO 2.0
Version 2 of the mod is in the works. It will take full advantage of ShadeMe's OBSE Blockhead addon and is essentially a completely rebuilt mod. Only the ESP will use version 1 work. I'm not giving an ETA as everything is subject to change and I'm going to iterate the art until I'm happy with it. Right now all the pieces are in place and the mod is fully functional - it's just art asset work now.
What 2.0 will change:
-Female and male heads will use separate model and texture assets instead of Oblivion's vanilla unisix head system
-All nonbeast races will have totally redone art
-Elves will resemble their Skyrim counterparts much more
-Orcs are getting a massive facelift with reduced mouth size (equivalent to Skyrim) and adjusted facial proportions + new textures
-Golden Saints, Dark Seducers and Dremoras will be included with totally new looks
-Beasts will be polished but will continue to use unisix heads
-3 (for the time being) new hairstyles, 2 of which will replace the conical Mer haircuts, possibly more if time allows
-Neck seams will be reduced
-Possible bigger changes to some races encompassing body textures for better looking skin colours (biggest offenders being High Elves, Orcs and Dark Elves)
