Ditch the Craigslist couch and try renting your furniture instead

Millennials: They love their #shelfies, their plants and their minimalist decor. But, caught in a web of stagnant wages, student loan debt and temp jobs, many can’t foot the bill for the West Elm-like look they aspire to or can’t justify buying furniture for the long term.

How do retailers reach a generation that desires upscale furnishings but can’t afford the full sticker price? Many are launching options for customers to rent furnishings for the short term, with an option to buy. These new ventures are geared toward reusability and feature curated packages that could help take the guesswork and commitment out of furnishing.

Recently, West Elm and Rent the Runway announced a partnership for customers to rent textiles such as quilts, blankets, throw pillows and linens. At the end of a fixed period, customers can buy the items or swap them for something new.

Similarly, several start-ups including CasaOne, Fernish and Feather are renting full suites of upscale furniture to aspiring urban homemakers on both coasts. Even low-cost Ikea is getting in on the concept: The company announced this month that it would launch a pilot rental program in 30 countries in an effort to keep its furniture out of landfills. Some companies are even renting baby furniture. These companies are betting on consumers who aren’t ready to commit to one set of furniture.

Change your mood

With the rising popularity of sharing spaces on Instagram, “we saw the cultural moment shifting,” said Andres “Dru” Ortega, West Elm’s head of public relations and influencer marketing. “We want to give the same experience of changing your outfit to changing the mood of your home. It seemed like a natural move for us.” The idea is to give customers a chance to switch up their decor seasonally by selecting curated bundles of home textiles.

Starting this summer, as part of an unlimited Rent the Runway membership for $159 a month, shoppers will be able to revel in a lifestyle they want and have the option to change their selections based on their mood or needs. Although the partnership includes only textile goods, Ortega says, eventually it will offer furniture as well.

Curated experience

These new services could be an appealing option for people looking for a slice of luxury without taking the full financial hit, such as Elissa Weinzimmer, 33, an entrepreneur in Brooklyn. After spending her 20s in “survival mode,” she recently moved into a two-bedroom apartment and became a Feather customer when she saw the brand’s Instagram account. “Every apartment I’ve ever moved into before, I’ve always assumed that I had to be scrappy and poor and buy old things on Craigslist,” said Weinzimmer, who leases a couch, bed frame and desk chair part of a six-month plan. Weinzimmer appreciates the company’s delivery and assembly services, along with its aesthetic. With Feather, “it felt like a curated experience where I could get lovely things.”

The company, which operates in the New York and San Francisco Bay areas, offers a “furniture subscription service” that lets customers pick out sofas, mattresses, bed frames and more from brands such as Tuft + Needle, West Elm, Joybird and Pottery Barn. The items can be rented a la carte or as part of room packages for three to 12 months, with the option to extend rental times or purchase the pieces at about market price.

For example, West Elm’s Eddy sofa, which retails for $899, is available through Feather for $52 per month as part of a 12-month subscription. At the end of that period, a customer can swap out the item, renew it at a discount, return it for a flat pickup fee or buy it for $275 (which, in total, comes out to the retail price).

In between rentals, the items are refurbished and cleaned.

“In my 20s I would have been like, ‘I can’t afford it’ or ‘I have to get the scratched version and buy it from someone down the street,’ ” Weinzimmer says. “But in my 30s? I’m super happy to have a West Elm couch that came to me new. My business is now more successful and that’s a recent development in my 30s, and this is part of my way of celebrating that.”

Why Choose GoShare for Craigslist Philadelphia Delivery?

Craigslist Philadelphia has great deals for an abundance of unique items, ranging from custom-made recliners to colorful accent tables. Instead of a traditional retail store, however, the seller you are purchasing from does not provide a delivery service for pickup and drop-off. If you don’t own a truck or have a willing friend with a truck, it might seem incredibly hard to get your item home.

Is there a possible solution then? You might consider hiring a delivery driver from a Craigslist Ad or Yelp. Since you’re making purchases on the Craigslist platform, why not seek convenience and hire a delivery driver from there as well?

Unfortunately, you potentially face a number of consequences when booking someone off of Craigslist or Yelp. It is common to encounter undependable contractors who fail to guarantee their work and do not carry insurance in case of damaged goods. Worse, there are criminals andscammers who attempt to steal and defraud on the Craigslist platform.

One devastating incident involved a family in Georgia, who found themselves the victims of a Craigslist scam when thieves posing as movers drove off with amoving truck filled with the family’s belongings and stole everything they owned (Learn more about Craigslist scams and how to protect yourselfhere).

It’s possible to decline to purchase an item if the picture was hiding stains or damage. However, a delivery driver can easily damage or steal your item, leaving you no way to recoup your lost value.

GoShare offers asafe, fast, and affordable solution for Philadelphia Craigslist delivery. You can avoid dealing with the tremendous risk involved when hiring an unknown person off of an anonymous online advertisement. GoShare’s delivery pros have passed strictbackground checks and are required to maintain highcustomer ratings. When you use GoShare, a clear estimate will be given. You can easily track your delivery and payment status through the GoShare app or website. No need to store extra cash in your pocket, use your credit or debit card to pay instead. Plus, have peace of mind knowing that your project is backed by our cargoinsurance policy.

You can request on-demand assistance from GoShare Delivery Professionals within the hour, or in advance. Delivery pros are available when you need them, including evenings and weekends. GoShare is also perfect forretail delivery, small moves, andjunk hauling.

How not to get swindled buying furniture off craigslist

I spent the better part of last weekend scooping up furniture off Craigslist.

My friends know how frugal I am when it comes to home decor. I've had enough experience being forced to sell my beloved furniture at rock bottom prices (or having to give it away) because of unanticipated moves.

I'm not buying new furniture anymore. It's just not practical.

And what's the point when there's craigslist. This free listing service has helped me furnish at least three separate apartments, as well as unload some unwise purchases.

My proudest craigslist moments: A $200 real oak bedroom set; a 1940s-style dining room table with six chairs, plus matching china cabinet and buffet (that the seller recently refinished) for a total of $600; a $400 living room settee plus three plush matching chairs. All items were in near-perfect condition. So what if everyone thinks they're visiting grandma's house. I like what I like.

STORY: https://www.delawareonline.com/story/life/shopping/trende/2014/05/28/resale-boutique-clothes-mentor-opens-new-location/9689535/

There are a few issues with buying secondhand. First, it takes A LOT more time. I didn't have one piece of comfortable furniture in my place for six months while I was hunting for a loveseat with character that would fit through my miniscule 28-inch doorway.

There's also the moving factor. I don't own a van. Home Depot hourly truck rental (and sympathetic friends and significant others) to the rescue.

There's also that unfortunate experience when I bought a couch and chair infested with fleas. (Surprisingly, that didn't turn me off craigslist).

On Friday evening, I rushed home from work to pick up a free brass queen heaboard from a desperate university student who was moving. I attempted to tie the the monstrous thing to my hood using Boy Scout knots. Frustrated, I just crammed it in my car with one leg hanging out the window and drove the 15 minutes home with it stabbing my shoulder. (I don't recommend this unless you REALLY need a headboard).

On Sunday, I persuaded my boyfriend to drive an hour with me to pick up a modern textured loveseat and two side chairs from a woman in ritzy Glenmoore, Pa. who was downsizing. The spotless pieces resided in her "piano room." The lady thought I was nutso for driving such a long distance, but I was happy to clean her out for $275, including transportation costs.

Here are some tips for buying furniture off craigslist that I have assembled over more than a decade of personal experience and advice from others:

* Ignore ads with multiple misspellings, stock photos and deals that seem way too good to be true, or that require payment by mail. Scam is a four-letter word. I only buy new electronics. Wear and tear is more of a factor here.

* If there is a phone number listed and you really want the item, jump on it. If not, send an e-mail that gets straight to the point. Ask questions about dimensions, condition (rips, stains, other imperfections), brand and age of the items. Leave a contact number so the seller knows you're legit.

* Websites recommend meeting the seller in a public place to inspect the merchandise. I find this to be completely unrealistic because most sellers won't lug a cabinet to Starbucks. For smaller pieces, you can try it. But if you must go to the seller's house, try to bring a friend with you and do it during the day. At the very least, tell a friend or family member where you're going.

* Be smart with your money. I leave my purse in the car when I first meet a seller. If I like the item, I'll give the seller cash when I'm ready to pick it up. Avoid paying a seller the full purchase price unless you have the item in hand. If the seller requests a deposit and you're comfortable with him/her, leave a minimal amount (less than $50) to "hold" the item, preferably with a written receipt. Just don't wait more than a few days to pick it up. I've had sellers renege on verbal agreements after a better offer came in.

* Everything is negotiable unless it's not. If the seller says "final price," don't bother negotiating. If the price is listed OBO, try offering 10% to 40% less and see what happens.

Desperate graduating college student = headboard deal of the century.

. You'll be amazed at how flexible sellers are when they're ready to move overseas or downsize.

Anyone else care to brag about a steal of a deal on craigslist? Or a craigslist transaction run amok?

Investing during life’s stages

The now 31-year-old artist said she wasn't surprised when the listing re-surfaced online, because the Craigslist scam had been happening for years.

"The couch is owned by the Internet now. I just think it’s funny. I do hope it’s still alive, and that it’s bringing someone joy somewhere outside of a joy of trolling on the internet," Burroughs told the Inquirer.

Burroughs also said that the $11,000 asking price in the fake Craigslist ad was also way off. She attempted to sell it for $950 but ending up finding a buyer for around $500.

The pig couch sold years ago, shortly after the then 22-year-old artist completed the piece of furniture as a the project for her senior thesis. As far as Burroughs knows, the owner is not looking to sell it right now.

Martin Roesch, the real owner, is well-known in his own right for being somewhat of a Silicon Valley celebrity. Roesch founded the cybersecurity company Sourcefire, which was later acquired by Cisco Systems, a large, multinational, technology conglomerate.

Roesch bought the pig couch to use for his Sourcefire offices in Maryland, where it reportedly still resides. The pig seating was on-theme with the company's original internet security software program named "Snort."

The exec even joined in on the fun this week, when he realized the cute couch was getting new attention.

DIY Craigslist Furniture - Before \u0026 After

The smell of burnt toast fills Mid-Century Furniture Warehouse in Port Richmond. But it’s not bread that’s browning — it’s a 1960s-era walnut dining table.

“We’re giving things a second life, sometimes a third,” said furniture repairman James Miller as he brushed polyurethane onto the table, enriching its chocolaty tones. Nearby, his colleague sanded a bow-tie tuxedo-chair frame. The scent of sawdust mixed into the air.

Of the ways to furnish your house on a budget, this secondhand showroom is one of many. There’s also Craigslist, locally run online vendors, and stores (including good old Ikea) that sell brand-new furniture at bargain rates. How to proceed? Put these tips to use.

When thinking of secondhand options, consider two factors: price and quality.

For the cheapest finds, steer toward thrift stores like the Salvation Army, Uhuru Furniture, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, and Circle Thrift. Furniture here is donated and sold as is. As a result, prices are lower, but pieces are typically far from mint condition.

For DIYers, these finds present opportunities.

“If it’s real wood, you can transform it,” said Amy Cuker, interior design director at Down2earth Interior Design. “Reimagine pieces that have a tacky color or wood finish. Picture them with different paint and hardware.”

On the other end of the secondhand spectrum are places like Mid-Century Furniture Warehouse, where each piece has been hand-sourced and fully restored.

“We’ll strip and sand it, color it, poly it — whatever needs to be done to make it a finished piece,” explains Mid-Century owner Brian Lawlor.

A solid wood table may cost between $500 and $4,000; even at the lowest price, it’s about four times more than your average thrift-store buy. But the sought-after styles and vintage makers in these stores often sell for much more at antique shops. Consider a restored $3,400 Danish rosewood circular table, once listed at $14,000 by online retailer 1stdibs.

In between thrift stores and refurbishers, there are places like Kensington’s Thunderbird Salvage, which takes donations but handpicks 80 percent of its inventory; Jinxed (four locations), where the furniture selection is curated but rarely restored; and North Wales’ Discount Mid Century Modern, where you can buy a piece as-is or fully restored, priced to match.

And if you have the right disposition — and the desire to cut out the middleman — you can check out auctions and estate sales. Websites like SalesByHelen.com and GoToAuction.com list times and locations.

When it comes to buying secondhand furniture, generally speaking, older is better.

“The way that newer furniture is constructed makes it more susceptible to falling apart, and you also can’t repair it as easily,” Lawlor said. That’s particularly true of wooden furniture. “With a piece from the ‘60s, it’s easy to take off a nail polish stain or repaint it and give it new life.” Not so of much from the 1990s.

A lot of modern furnishings are constructed from particleboard, a conglomerate of wood chips compressed with resin, then coated with a heavy laminate. The laminate makes it difficult for paint to adhere, hindering its adaptability and restorability.

“It’s basically just a bunch of sawdust with glue, so of course it doesn’t hold up,” explains Jinxed owner Mike Supermodel. “Over time, it will sag, and if it gets wet, it’ll start to swell.”

Supermodel avoids particleboard in favor of wood and sometimes metal (iron over aluminum).

For some of the best deals, keep track of what is and isn’t trending.

“Right now, people don’t want Victorian furniture — the darker brown wood and heavy fabrics — so it’s become a better value,” Lawlor said. “The 1950s blond furniture also doesn’t have a market right now, and it’s still really well-made.”

Even though it won’t last for decades, Ikea furniture has its place.

“If you have a teenager, and they’re only going to be in your house for five more years, do you need to invest in lifetime furniture?” asks interior designer Amy Cuker. Her favorite Ikea pieces are the bathroom vanities, since many are slimmer than what can be found elsewhere.

Mass-produced, bargain-priced pieces aren’t likely to add much character to a room, but they’ll serve a function and blend easily into the background. Just don’t expect them to hold up much longer than five years (or survive a move).

One of the greatest appeals of buying new, whether at Ikea or Raymour & Flanigan or elsewhere, is the ability to pay in installments. But choose wisely.

Look for solid wood in items like tables and desks. For couches, Cuker recommends seeking out “eight-way, hand-tied” suspension, a spring construction that increases comfort and durability. For any upholstered pieces, steer toward those with performance fabrics designed to be water- and stain-resistant.

“Unfortunately, a lot of modern furniture is imported from manufacturers overseas who copy the styles of those remaining in North Carolina [a hub of modern-day furniture-making], but the pieces lose the constructional integrity,” Cuker said. “If you look for the right materials, though, you can ensure you’re starting with a baseline that’ll last.”

Craigslist offers an unfiltered sprawl of furniture and furniture sellers. There are folks trying to make a dollar on dilapidated couches, college grads shedding Ikea items, and grandkids looking to rehome unwanted family heirlooms. When a gems does surface, you need to act fast.

“You might want to commit to buying before you even see the piece and just be ready to take a loss,” said Discount Mid Century Modern owner Jeff Trejbrowski, who adds you may be competing against scouters who spend all day scouring Craigslist.

Make sure the seller is honest by asking questions about the furniture, Trejbrowski advises, and don’t hand out any money until the end of the transaction. Also, take a close look at the photos.

“Assess what’s going on around the furniture: Does the house look messy? Is there a bunch of heavy stuff sitting on top? If it looks like it’s being treated rough, it probably is.”

Trejbrowski’s main advice for buying: “Have a vision and then wait it out until you find it — otherwise you’re going to waste money on something you’ll end up tossing.”

Fortunately, turnover is typically high. Most secondhand shops get new items at least once a week, and sometimes more — Uhuru Furniture receives drop-offs daily. If you don’t see what you’re looking for on the first visit, come back often.

Also, determine what might justify a splurge, and allocate your budget accordingly. A couch that’s comfortable and will hold up for a 10-plus years is worth an investment.

“Cut costs on items that don’t necessarily require top-notch durability to survive a lifetime, like end tables and consoles,” Cuker said.
