How to Lower the Legs on Your Dishwasher

By Cecilia Harsch

Adjust the length of dishwasher legs to keep the door from hitting the countertop when you close it.

A standard kitchen counter top height measures 36 inches according to Kaufman Homes, but 1/2 inch variations in height could exist depending on the counter top material or the cabinet design. Built-in dishwashers are designed to install beneath the counter top. If the dishwasher is too tall for the space, the door could hit or hang on the counter top, causing damage and making it difficult to open the dishwasher door. Thankfully, a dishwasher’s front legs can be lowered to fit beneath the counter top, so you can avoid any damage.

Disconnect the power to your dishwasher. Depending on the original installation of the dishwasher, you may only need to unplug the power cord from beneath the kitchen sink, or it requires turning off the dishwasher’s circuit breaker in the main breaker box.

Close the dishwasher door. Attempt to start a wash cycle on the dishwasher. If you turned off the correct circuit breaker, or unplugged the correct power cord, the dishwasher will not start.

Look for the screws holding the two dishwasher mounting brackets to the underside of the countertop. Loosen these screws, but do not remove them.

Find the screws holding the toe, or service, panel to the bottom of the dishwasher. These screws should be located directly beneath the door and along the top of the toe panel. Remove the screws and pull the toe panel from the front of the dishwasher to expose the front leveling legs.

Fit an adjustable wrench to the dishwasher feet. Turn the left foot clockwise to lower the leg to your desired height.

Hold a torpedo level to the bottom of the closed dishwasher door. Lower the right leveling leg by turning the foot clockwise with the adjustable wrench. As you lower the leg, monitor the bubble inside the horizontal glass tube on the torpedo level. When the bubble floats between the two vertical lines marked on the tube, stop turning the right leveling foot.

Tighten the screws holding the dishwasher mounting brackets to the underside of the countertop. Place the toe panel on the bottom of the dishwasher. Secure it with the screws you removed previously. Plug the power cord into the wall outlet or turn the circuit breaker on to provide power to the dishwasher.

How to Install a Dishwasher With a Height Adjustment

Height adjustment allows you to level the dishwasher once in position.

Step 1

Thread the dishwasher’s water supply line onto the water supply valve. Feed the water supply line to the cavity where the dishwasher will sit, and then tip the dishwasher backward. Remove the screws holding the bottom plate to the dishwasher’s front and thread the water supply line onto the water inlet connection.

Step 2

Feed the electrical supply wires through the opening in the dishwasher’s electrical box. Twist the same-colored wires together and thread wire nuts onto the connections. Tightening the screws on the electrical box where the wires feed inside holds the wires in place.

Step 3

Connect the drain line to the sink’s drain line or disposal, and the drain connection of the underside of the dishwasher. Tightening the screws on the hose clamps at either end of the drain line secures the connections.

Step 4

Slide the dishwasher into its cavity, stopping once its front sits flush with the surrounding cabinetry. Open the dishwasher’s front door and hold a level against the tub’s top. Use your other hand to turn the feet on the front of the dishwasher, adjusting its height until its mounting brackets touch the underside of the counter and the machine sits level.

Step 5

Drive wood screws through the holes in the dishwasher’s mounting brackets and into the counter’s underside. Replace the front panel on the bottom of the dishwasher and tighten the screws holding it in place.
