Leg developer machine

Leg extension is, without a doubt, one of the most popular leg exercises in the world. It might not be as popular as squats, but it's definitely a workout that can enhance and strengthen the lower body.

If you have your own home gym and you're not satisfied with simple squats (which can be done without any tools), you might be interested in getting your own machine. But you shouldn’t get just any piece of equipment; you need the very best leg extension machine on the market that fits your budget.

That’s why I scoured the market in search of the very best leg extension and curl machines out there.

Leg Exercise Machines Explained (Curls & Extensions)

The primary focus of leg extension is to train the quadriceps, which are the muscles located on the front part of the thigh. If you are a Latin language enthusiast, then the muscle names are rectus femoris and vastus muscles.

When done properly, the leg extension workout increases your quad muscle size and strength, therefore strengthening key attachments of the knee joint. If you combine this with leg curls, your quads can become stronger and more stable, which will help you run faster, jump higher, and stay on your feet for longer periods of time.

This is actually one of the very few exercises that works to fully isolate this muscle group. Want to learn more about leg exercises? Check out our guide on Leg Press Vs Leg Extensions.

How To Choose The Best Leg Exercise Machine For You

Machine Durability

When buying any type of weight machine, durability and construction should always be something to look into. Even if the machine looks nice, it won't matter if the components start falling apart after a month of use.

For this reason, you want to find a leg extension and curl machine that is made of a solid steel frame and sits firmly on the floor surface. Wobbly, cheap machines are not only ineffective, but they can also be unsafe to use.

Maximum Load

Next up, consider the machine's weight system. The best leg extension and curl machines come with stacked weight plates that cater to a variety of different strength goals and limitations.

Keep in mind that some machines don't come with weights, so you might have to purchase these separately. If you do, just make sure to use weights that are compatible with the leg extension machine.

Adjustability

Even if you're the only person who will be using this machine, adjustability is an important feature. Easy adjustability of the seat, back, and foot pad means that you'll be able to find the perfect position based on your height and leg length.

Comfort & Padding

The padding on the seat, back, and foot pads should be comfortable, but it also needs to be durable. Look for pads that are washable, comfortable and built to last. Vinyl covered foam rollers are a nice added touch because they are easier to wash than standard foam roller pads.

Additional Exercises

One of the best ways to get more bang for your buck is to find a leg extension machine that accommodates additional exercises. Some even allow you to do bicep curls while you do your leg extension reps, so you might be able to kill two birds with one stone.

Budget & Warranty

The best leg extension machines are all over the board when it comes to price. While you can find one for a few hundred dollars, there are also home gym options that resemble commercial-quality equipment, and these tend to break the bank.

No matter your budget, just make sure to look into the manufacturer's included warranty. The warranty policy for these machines often covers the frame for a certain amount of time (like 10 years) and the other components for a shorter time frame (like 1 year).

5 Best Leg Extension Machines Reviewed

Now that you're familiar with the basics, let’s see which of these machines is worth the asking price.

1. Body-Solid Pro Dual Leg Extension & Curl Machine

The top machine on our list is made by Body-Solid. I'll be looking at and reviewing the PRO DUAL version.

The main difference between the PRO Dual and GCEC340 (4th on our list and another great option from Body-Solid) is that this is mainly for commercial use and comes with its own weight system – so there's no need to purchase weight plates separately. The included weight stack is 210 lbs (95.3 kg), which is plenty for most people.

This machine has a large, biomechanical seat that comes with a back-pad with 12 adjustable positions for maximum comfort for users of all sizes. As the name states, the machine can be used for leg extensions and leg curls alike. Both have 7 different adjustable positions, which provides a really great range of motion for any user.

The main thing that separates the PRO Dual from the competition (besides the included weight stack) is the oversized 9” (22.9 cm) self-adjusting leg pad. There is also a pop-pin (adjustable) thigh hold-down pad for increased security and comfort.

The assembled dimensions are 66.9 x 39.4 x 23.6 inches (170 x 100 x 60 cm) and the weight (with included weight stack) is 505 pounds (229 kg). Aside from the price, the large size and heavy weight are the only real drawbacks to this machine.

Our rating: 4-8 Star Rating 4.8 / 5

Pros

  • Commercial grade machine
  • Included weight-stack of 210 lbs
  • Comfortable, oversized leg pad for extensions and curls
  • Lots of adjustability to accommodate different heights
  • Pop-pin for thigh hold-down

Cons

  • Takes a bit of space
  • Expensive (although considering the included weight stack and commercial quality, that can be expected)

2. Gold’s Gym XRS 20 Olympic Workout Bench

  • 600 pound weight capacity: With a 300 pound...

Our list of the 5 best leg extension machines continues with a solid piece of equipment manufactured by Gold’s Gym.

This particular machine's frame is made of steel and comes with the weight support of 600 lbs (136 kg) total, and 300 pounds for user weight. It has 6 inclined positions for complete comfort and the curl yoke (upper body bars) is removable.

It also comes with Olympic 2” weight adapter. That means you can use both standard and Olympic weight plates, which are not included and must be purchased separately. I really love that this machine includes 9.5" adjustable safety spotters. This allows you to get a safe, effective workout with spotters that support you during bench press and squat type workouts.

The assembled dimensions are (L x W x H): 65 x 49.5 x 73 Inches (165 x 125.7 x 185.4 cm) and the weight is 60 lbs (27.2 kg). Because it's lightweight, this is an excellent choice if you're looking for a portable leg extension machine for your home gym. However, it's not the ideal choice for larger individuals, especially those who are close to 300 pounds.

Our rating: 4.7 Star Rating 4.7 / 5

Pros

  • Easy assembly
  • Great for short and tall users
  • Customer service by Gold’s Gym
  • Great price
  • Lightweight and portable

Cons

  • For a bigger person, the frame lacks width and it can feel unstable
  • No weight plates included

3. Deltech Fitness Leg Extension (DF807)

The 3rd product on our list is made by Deltech and has been on the market for quite some time now. The DF807 Leg Extension machine is a top-seller, so it's time to find out why.

Let’s start with the frame. As you have probably guessed, it is made of heavy gauge steel tubing with a tough powder-coat finish. All the pads are made of high-density padding, including anti-sweat vinyl that is easy to clean after each workout.

The machine can be used for leg extensions as well as leg curls and it’s fully adjustable, so it will fit people of all shapes and sizes. The machine works with standard and Olympic weight plates, which need to be purchased separately.

The dimensions are 53 x 26 x 36 inches (134.6 x 66 x 91.4 cm) and the machine’s weight is 107 pounds (48.5 kg). The small footprint makes this a great choice if you're limited on space in your home gym. However, many people have found the leg curl attachment to stretch too far up, so if you're short, you might struggle with this.

Our rating: 4.6 Star Rating 4.6 / 5

Pros

  • Adjustable for both extensions and curls
  • Quite sturdy
  • Nice welding and durability
  • Affordable
  • Great customer service
  • Compact - great for small home gyms!

Cons

  • No assembly instructions
  • Handles for lying leg curls are too upright (this is a con only for some people)

The 4th on our list is another machine manufactured by Body-Solid.

The frame is made of quality 7-gauge steel and since it’s fully adjustable, it will accommodate the majority of users. This machine can be used for leg curls in addition to the standard extensions, which is a huge plus. It works with weight plates, which are not part of the machine and need to be purchased separately.

The seat and foot-roller are made with DuraFirm padding, which provides maximum comfort along with durability. The easy-made pin-lock system makes it easy to make quick adjustments to your desired weight and adjustments. However, I found the weight loading are to be quite short, so I don't suspect that this can hold as much weight as the first Body-Solid machine I reviewed.

The assembled dimensions of the machine are 49” x 42” x 37” (124.5 x 106.7 x 94 cm) and the weight is 97 pounds (44 kg). The maximum support weight is not specified by the manufacturer, but considering the commercial-grade steel frame, I suspect it will be at least 300 pounds. Best of all, Body-Solid provides a lifetime warranty.

Our rating: 4.5 Star Rating 4.5 / 5

Pros

  • Commercial-quality materials
  • Sturdy construction
  • Great for short and tall people alike
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Assembly instructions could be better
  • The weight load bar is quite short, so don’t expect to put a lot of plates on it

The final model on our list of the best extension machine is made by XMark.

This particular machine comes with a thigh pad for maximum security and comfort, with a whopping 12 adjustable positions. The press arm provides 20 adjustable positions and the backrest pad is also fully-adjustable. The machine can be used for leg extensions and leg curls, so you have plenty of potential for lower body workouts.

The entire frame is made of 11-gauge steel with applied scratch-resistant powder finish. The cushions are made of ultra-thick 3-inches Duracraft material, along with double-stitched Duraguard vinyl. The vinyl-covered rollers are 4.33” in size, so they're quite large compared to many other models on the market.

The machine uses weight plates (which are not included), and both standard and Olympic weight plates can be used. One thing I find very odd is that the tightening screws for the weight adapters are not included with this machine. However, it's easy enough to find the right screws, so this isn't a huge deal if you ask me.

The assembled dimensions are 47.8” L x 41.1” W x 41.2” H (121.4 x 104.4 x 104.6 cm) and the weight is 136 pounds (57.15 kg). The machine is compact, but it's not necessarily fair to call it "lightweight", so keep that in mind if you want something that's portable.

Our rating: 4.3 stars 4.3 / 5

Pros

  • Easy assembly
  • Solid and sturdy construction
  • Great customer support by Xmark
  • Good design
  • Comfortable use for all kinds of heights

Cons

  • Tightening screws for weight adapters are not included
  • A bit pricey

Are There Any Drawbacks Of Leg Extension Exercises?

When it comes to these machines, it's not always a win-win situation. There are certain drawbacks to the exercise as well.

The main disadvantage is that leg extensions and curls apply tension on the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), which is located in the knee. Therefore, if you have problems with the knees or have undergone a knee injury in the past, it is best to avoid leg extension exercises in general.

Another risk that goes hand in hand with ACL tension is lateral patellar deviation, which means the knee cap can slide to either side during extensions and curls. While this has never personally happened to me, I can imagine it to be pretty painful and a serious injury.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

Are leg curls and extensions good for you?

As long as they're done using the proper technique, then leg curls and extensions can do a lot to strengthen the quads. There are a lot of benefits to owning your own machine, like reinforced knee joints, stronger thighs, and improved balance and stamina.

How much does a leg extension machine cost on average?

These machines can cost as little as $150 and as much as $1000+. That's why I recommend setting your budget first, then you can browse the different models that fit within your ideal price range.

How often should I perform leg extension exercises?

While you might be tempted to work out your quads every day of the week, this isn't recommended. It's important to give your muscles and joints a break so that they can recuperate, so every other day (every 48 hours) is a solid workout regimen for performing leg extensions.

Conclusion

That concludes our list of the best leg extension and curl machines on the market.

As you can see, the list is completed by only 5 machines, because quite frankly, the number of options is limited if you're looking for a home-gym option. However, I’m confident that each of these 5 models is worth every penny.

My personal favorite is the Body Solid Pro model at the top of the list, but it's best to consider your budget, your design preferences, and your available space before deciding on the one for you.

Best Leg Extension Machines For A Full Lower-Body Day

Best Leg Extension Machines Buyer's Guide

Many leg extension machines are available online, but one should pay heed while buying a worthwhile machine. This is because you don't want your money to be wasted on any third-class workout machine.

Certain factors need to be considered while buying the workout bench that is most comfortable and effective. For this purpose, we have created this guide to make it easier for you to choose the perfect bench press for your gym. We have taken many things into account to make this purchase effortless for you.

What are the key considerations when buying a leg extension machine?

Durability

The leg machine should be durable and sturdy. Most low-quality machines tend to rust after a certain amount of time. You must make sure that the one you are planning to buy is durable. The parts of the machine should be assembled tightly together, and it shouldn't wear off easily.

Easy to assemble

The machine comes in different parts, and you have to assemble it once your order has arrived. While buying the bench, you should make sure that it is easy to assemble. For this purpose, you should read all the instructions given to combine the whole machine and buy it.

Comfort

Comfort is the one thing that you shouldn't compromise. While purchasing a workout machine, you must check whether it is comfy or not. It should be comfortable enough that you can sit on it for long hours of training without hurting your back. You should buy the ones which contain padding on the back and foot, which makes it extremely comfortable.

Affordability

Staying on budget is important as exercise machines can get quite pricey. There are many options available when buying a leg extension machine as there are many less costly machines. Some others are quite expensive. It depends on your budget and preferences that which one you should buy.

Easy to use

The machine should be easy to use. Many people have just started working out. It should not give them a tough time in understanding its basics. It should allow the newbies to work out with full confidence.

Which features to look for in the best leg extension machines?

Leather quality

The leather quality of the bench needs to be taken into consideration. Some leather seats are not durable and cheap. These seats get easily torn apart. Others are water and oil resistant, and you should buy those which have these qualities.

Weight capacity

The machine should be able to carry heavyweight people. Obese people most use leg extension machines to get into shape and lose fat. So, it should withstand the weight of someone a bit heavier.

Adjustability

Easy adjustability of the seat gives an edge to the machine over the one whose seat is difficult to adjust. The adjustability of the seat, back, and foot should be done with utmost ease. Adjustments are done according to height to provide a more comfortable workout experience.

Rust-free metal

The body of the machine should be made of heavy-gauge steel construction. It should be durable enough that even if you don't use it for months, it should still work well and don't rust. The machine's components should work perfectly fine even if it is used after a long period.

Multiple workouts

A leg extension machine should be able to let you perform multiple exercises with one machine. Some machines have features that allow you to do upper body workouts and lower body workouts with the same machine. You should aim for the one with multiple features, which can act as a tool for training different parts of the body.

What are the advantages of leg extension machine exercises?

Situated in the front portion of the thigh are quadriceps muscles. This is the essential focal point of leg extension exercises. These muscles are called rectus femoris and vastus muscles.

The knee extension machine reinforces key connections of the knee joints by expanding the quad muscles' size and strength only if you do it properly. When you want steadier and more grounded thighs, you should consider combining leg extensions with leg curls. This allows higher legs endurance and increases your running speed. Leg extension exercises are among the few selections you can choose from when isolating the quads during your workouts.

What is the price range of leg extension machines?

Expensive

If you are more concerned about the quality and want to be sure that you are investing in a great product, buying a machine from high-end brands is a good idea. The expensive leg extension machines range from 1,000$-2,000$.

Mid-range

Those who want a great value of money should invest in mid-range products from well-known brands. The mid-range leg extension machines range from 500$-1,000$.

Cheap

The cheap leg extension machines, which may not be as durable or have issues with stability, range from 70$-500$.

Leg Extension Machine FAQs

As long as they're done using the proper technique, then leg curls and extensions can do a lot to strengthen the quads. There are many benefits to owning your machine, like reinforced knee joints, stronger thighs, and improved balance and stamina.

Without a backrest, is there any risk of back injuries?

Any back support from a leg extension machine is especially important if you suffered or are suffering from back injuries or any kind of back pain. This is for your safety and will not turn your condition into something worse. If there's still no backrest, you should know how to hold your ankle, hip, and back at a 90-degree angle. Utilize the side handle, if there's any, and you may consider starting your workout with a lower weight to ensure your posture is aligned correctly.

How often should I perform leg extension exercises?

While you might be tempted to work out your quads every day of the week, this isn't recommended. It's important to give your muscles and joints a break so that they can recuperate, so every other day (every 48 hours) is a solid workout regimen for performing leg extensions.

Many exercises such as bicep curls and leg extension reps can be done with the help of this one machine. Moreover, the leg extension machine's exercises tend to tone arms, abdomen, and legs simultaneously.

Work your quads and hamstrings like never before with Fitness Factory's wide selection of leg extension machines and leg curl machines.

Fitness Factory carries an array of leg extension and leg curl machines include Body-Solid plate-loaded dual function machines, weight stack leg curl and leg extension machines as well as benches and bench attachments to work the always-important quads and hamstrings.

Leg extensions have a number of benefits including strengthening the ligaments and muscles around the quads including the patellar ligament. Leg curls isolate your hamstring muscles unlike any other exercises allowing you to strength both the knee and hip joint in unison. Leg curls ensure complete balance between the front and back of your leg. This balance is important in aesthetics but primarily for injury preventions. Working only one side of these joints without equal attention can lead to muscle imbalances and injury.

6 Best Leg Extension and Leg Curl Machine Reviews

Looking for a way to target your lower body and build your muscles faster? Read on to see which machines are right for you.

Leg extensions and seated leg curls are two of the most popular exercises at the gym, and for good reason, as they help you to develop two vital parts of your physique, the quadriceps, and the hamstrings. It’s no wonder the leg extension machines are always busy.

Muscular man exercising in gym, leg extension machine workout

Leg Extension Machine / Leg Curl Machine - Our Top Picks

Whereas most lower-leg exercises work a range of muscles, something that is certainly appreciated, leg extension and seated leg curl exercises allow you to isolate your muscles and focus on them specifically.

We reviewed some of the best seated leg curl and extension machines on the market to see which one was the best and in this article, we reveal our results.

Read on to see which one is right for you.

1. XMark Rotary Leg Extension and Curl Machine XM-7615

A top of the line leg extension and seated leg curl machine, the XM – 7615 from XMark is reliably built to help you train and develop your quadriceps and hamstrings.

Made from heavy-duty 11-gauge 2” x 3” commercial grade materials, it can withstand repeated use and intense workouts and handle 500lbs of weight.

It has a 12 position, vertically adjusted thigh pad, and a 20 position adjustable press arm, all designed to help you find the optimal position for your training and maximum comfort for you.

Your comfort is enhanced further with the fully adjustable backrest and the ultra-thick 3” Durafit cushions and pads, plus rubber grip handlebars for more support and comfort.

The XM-7615 seated leg curl and extension machine are plate loaded, meaning you add the weight yourself to the equipment, giving you full control over your development and not limiting you to what the machines can do.

Impressively, you can use both standard and Olympic weight plates when using this machine as an adapter sleeve is included to help you use either option, although you’ll have to get the weights separately.

This seated leg curl and extension machine wouldn’t look out of place in a gym, but it’s perfectly suited for home exercise and would make a great addition to your garage gym.

What We Liked

Our favorite feature of this curl and extension machine was its fully-adjustable nature. Some of these machines can be very difficult to get comfortable with, the XM looks to handle that for you by giving you a great range of options to help you find your ideal posture.

What We Didn't Like

We love the fact that this extension machine is plate loaded, as it gives you the chance to achieve greater progress, however, we would love it if it came with some weights out the box.

2. Body Champ BCB5860 Olympic Weight Bench With Leg Extension

The Body Champ BCB5860 is an Olympic weight bench that comes with a wide range of uses including a weights bench, adjustable squat rack, and a leg developer, for leg extensions and seated leg curls.

Made from heavy-duty materials this multi-function bench can help you with your fitness goals as you build your physique.

It has a 2.5-inch square tube design, allowing you to use this equipment with peace of mind that it can support your training.

It’s equipped for use with a 7 or 8-foot barbell and with the added attachments, you will be able to train a range of muscles, all over the body, including your chest, arms, back, and more.

However, as impressive as that is, for this review, we are focused on the leg curl and leg extension component of this machine.

This bench contains an adjustable dual-action leg developer, with oversized foam rollers, that allow you to do leg extensions, and as it’s a plate loaded machine, you’re in control of your progress, you add the weight yourself, using either standard or Olympic plates.
When you’re not using the leg developer for your legs, it can be used as a preacher curl, to train your arms and grow your biceps.

What We Liked

There’s no doubt that the flexibility of the Body Champ weights bench is a huge plus, giving you one piece of equipment that can help you to train your entire body. It’s a huge bonus for anyone serious about lifting weights.

What We Didn't Like

Because the leg developer is an added feature, and not the main function of this machine, they haven’t spent as much time developing the extension machine.  There are limited positions, meaning it may not fit all body types and heights, and although it’s still effective and you’ll be able to get good results, it may not offer the best results if you solely want a way to train your legs.

3. Marcy Adjustable Olympic Weight Bench with Leg Developer and Squat Rack MD-879

This machine, from popular fitness brand Marcy, is a versatile Olympic bench that can be used to train your chest, arms, legs, and back and even has the possibility of being used for squats as you develop your upper and lower body.

With a 14-gauge tubular steel frame that is resistant to rust and water, it’s built to last and can withstand intense exercise over time.

The bench is versatile and can be used to perform a bench press, squat, preacher curl, and more, including other exercises where you can use the bench purely for support, such as a single-arm row.

However, the main area we are interested in is the leg developer which has a dual-purpose when using this machine.

When not training your legs, the leg developer can be used for bicep curls but its primary function is for building your quads. It’s a plate loaded machine, giving you control of your development as you add the weight plates yourself, and to help you feel more comfortable when using this machine you will also find a vinyl covered foam seat and backrest, plus rubber grips on the handles.

In addition to this, you will also enjoy the foam on the footpads, which keep you comfortable when performing your exercise.

What We Liked

The multi-function versatility of this bench makes it a great option for anyone serious about lifting weights at home. You can cover the major exercises from this bench and with an easily moveable squat stand; you can also ensure you don’t miss out on a great lower body exercise when you train.

What We Didn't Like

The leg developer doesn’t have variable pin positions therefore some users may not be able to find their optimal position when using the leg extension setting.

4. Merax Utility Weight Bench with Leg Extension

This multi-function machine from Merax is another example of a versatile weights bench that has added more features to benefit your workouts.

You can complete a full-body workout, targeting your chest, back, shoulders and arms as you confidentially move between exercises before you switch your focus to your quads with the leg developer, which allows you to successfully perform a leg extension.

You have the option to add the weight yourself as the leg developer is plate loaded and fortunately, it takes both types of weight plates, standard and Olympic for your convenience, taking up to 250 lbs max.

Of course, as this is a weights bench and not a standalone extension machine, it does have other features that are highlighted through its build and we’re sure you would love them too.

Made from 12-gauge solid steel with a red-coated finish for strength and durability this bench is heavy-duty, it also supports weight up to 550bs which is more than enough for most people.

The bench itself can be adjusted through a range of different positions and is flexible enough for you to complete muscle-building exercises whether you’re set up in an incline, decline, upright or flat position.

Built with a 2” thick, dual-layer, waterproof padding to keep you comfortable, no matter how intense your sessions are you can also feel confident that you will be supported when you workout.

You can use this machine to build your entire physique, and once you’ve taken a look, it’s obvious why so many people go for this piece of kit.

What We Liked

Consisting of a preacher curl attachment that can be fitted or removed, we love how adaptable this machine is. You can do so much to improve your fitness and build your physique and the fact that it only takes one piece of kit is a huge bonus.

What We Didn't Like

We would love to see a leg developer that also supports the seated leg curl, unfortunately, you wouldn’t be able to use this leg extension machine to work your hamstrings.

5. Rogue Reflex Seated Leg Curl/Leg Extension Machine

Rogue fitness is a name Crossfit lovers will know well, and if you’ve used their equipment before, you know of its quality, well this seated leg curl/leg extension machine certainly means business too.

With its high-end design and premium feel, it wouldn’t look out of place in a gym and you can tell from the moment you lay eyes on it.

With its welded Tubular steel construction and powder-coated finish, this machine is all about maximum performance. It has a 250lb weight stack, which is a very respectful limit, perfect for building your muscles and adding mass, and a smart design that allows you to get the most out of your chosen exercise.

The roller pads, swivel back pads, and swing arm plate all can be adjusted to ensure you’re fully supported, and in the best position for you, with all of these features being done in the name of achieving your best performance.

The comfort doesn’t stop there either. Once you’re using the machine you’ll notice the comfortable back pads and the roller pads that are made from 2in high-density foam and designed for comfort, making your workout better.

With a 6-inch chrome-plated pulley system and a range of adjustable pads, this machine can cater to users of all sizes, and become a great companion to help you change your body.

What We Liked

The overall build of this seated leg curl and extension machine just screams high-quality and our favorite feature is the adjustable setting. Some leg extension machines can dig into your shins as you lift heavier weights, but with a fully adjustable seat, swing arm, and roller height, you can find the perfect position for you.

What We Didn't Like

It’s hard to find anything that we didn’t like with this seated leg curl and extension machine as it ticks all the boxes, however, if there was one thing we would love to change, it would be the weight. At over 500lbs, moving this piece of kit would be very difficult alone.

6. Rogue Reflex Lying Leg Curl

A laying leg press is a great way to isolate your hamstrings and help them to grow, it’s a great piece of equipment that can support your goals.

With a 250lb weight stack and a comprehensive, high-end design, we think that this piece of equipment is great for targeting your hamstrings.

Many people struggle with the traditional seated variations but can find more success with a laid down model and this could be the one for you or your gym.

FAQ

What does the leg extension machine do?

Leg extension machines are a great way to target your quadriceps. They isolate the muscle and solely work the quads, instead of making the glutes, hamstrings, lower back, and more do the work.

Are leg extensions better than squats?

Squats are great for developing your entire lower body, including your glutes, hamstrings, calf, and quads. However, if you can’t squat, then a leg extension is a perfectly good substitute you can make.

Is the leg extension better than the leg press?

They’re two different movements. The leg press is a compound movement, working your lower body, including the quads, whereas the extension machine specifically targets your quads, making it ideal to grow that one specific muscle.

What is the difference between leg curls and leg extensions?

The leg extension works the front of your leg, specifically the quadriceps muscles whereas the leg curl works the back of your legs, superficially the hamstrings.

How can I do leg curls without a machine?

It is possible to replicate the leg curl exercise by using resistance bands around your ankles and completing a laying down curl. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a way to train the hamstrings, there are other exercises available such as the Romanian Deadlift, Good mornings, or Single Leg Deadlifts.

Are seated leg curls or lying curls better?

People argue about this with good points being made for both sides. The differences however are not great enough to spend your time stressing over. Do whichever one you prefer and whichever one is available. Both are great for building your hamstrings.

How many days a week should you do legs?

It all depends on your training schedule. If you train once a week then that’s your answer, however, if you train 6 times a week you may want to split between the upper and lower body, training your legs 3 times a week. Train enough to make a difference but don’t overdo it.

Is the leg extension machine bad for knees?

If you have suffered from cruciate ligament injuries or have moving kneecaps then it could be a problem, and you may want to find another exercise.

How do you do leg extensions safely?

Always ensure you are set up correctly with your hips, knees, and ankle in the right position. Don’t use too much weight and don’t ever over-extend your legs. Ensure you control the weight up and down.

Can you build mass with a leg extension machine?

Absolutely, but ensure you’re getting enough volume and eating enough to grow muscle.

What is a good weight for leg extensions?

Everyone has their own threshold, our advice is to start with a lightweight that you can perform 10 reps on and go from here. If you can perform 12 or more, it's too light, if you can’t get 8, it’s too heavy. Just ensure you move the weight up slowly.

Can seated leg curls help knee pain?

Yes, leg curls can help to strengthen the knees and the muscles around the joint, but if you suffer from bad knees, take it slowly before trying new exercises.

Training your legs is one of the most important things you can do in the gym, not only for aesthetic reasons but to improve your movement and functionality as a whole.
