Silhouette design store DEFAULT
If you've purchased anything from the Silhouette Design Store recently you may have noticed you now have the option to download all of your purchases to your computer rather than only saving them to your Silhouette Cloud Library.

This is a big change and opens up a lot of doors for users to work outside of the Silhouette library and Cloud.
To fully understand how and why this will be such a game changer for Silhouette users, we first need to understand the previous limitations of .Studio files purchased from the Design Store.

Previous Download Limitations on Silhouette Design Store Purchases

Until this recent change the .Studio3 version of any purchased file from the Design Store would automatically be saved and stored ONLY to the user's Silhouette Cloud.  If you wanted to download your Silhouette Store purchases to your computer, you had to save them out of Studio individually.

New Options for Downloading Silhouette .Studio Files

If you take advantage of this new download option your Silhouette Studio files from each order will be downloaded in a zip file (titled with the Order number) as well as saved in your Silhouette Cloud library.

The first time you opt to download your Design Store purchase you'll be able to check a box to download all future orders automatically.

You'll need to need unzip the folders to access the designs inside.

However, you'll notice that currently - while using V4.1 - the file preview is displaying the Silhouette 3D logo. This is a bug that needs to be fixed in development still.

When Silhouette Studio V4.2 is rolled out (it's currently in open beta), one of the new features is that .Studio3 files saved on your hard drive will offer a file previewrather than the Silhouette Studio logo.

The file preview is one of the main reasons that many Silhouette users continue to stick with the Silhouette Library despite it's not-so-great reputation on reliability.  It's pretty much the only way to view designs at a glance (and until now was the only way to access Silhouette Design Store designs).

Silhouette Studio Library and Cloud

With this combination of new changes around Silhouette .Studio3 files it may be time to consider abandoning the library and the cloud altogether.

Of course this would mean you will need to create a way to organize, store and manage your .Studio3 files outside of the library just like you do with designs you purchase from other design and font sites like So Fontsy.  There are lots of options for that including storing designs to an external hard drive or another Cloud-based services such as a personal cloud or Google Drive and Dropbox.

Challenges for Existing Silhouette Library Users

The biggest challenge for moving in this direction will be dealing with designs in your current Local User library. As of now, Silhouette Studio only allows bulk export - as a means of a backup - to generate an unusable exec file. "Un-usable" in that you can't access or open individual files from it. It's only usable with Silhouette Studio if you want to re-import your entire library.

To export individual user files (.Studio3 or other file formats like SVG) you'll have to take on the time consuming task of saving each to your hard drive individually.

To download Design Store purchases - those currently being stored exclusively in your Cloud library - you can go back into your account and download all of your previous purchases through Account Settings > My Download History.  Each order must be downloaded individually.

Silhouette Design Store Overview

If you are a new member of Silhouette Nation, let us be the first to welcome you to our growing (international) family. We can’t wait to walk you through everything you need to know to get started crafting. If you are thinking, “I have no idea where to start,” trust me when I say, you’ve already taken a giant leap in the right direction. You’re here now, ready to learn, and we are here to help.

We are going to be talking all about the Silhouette Design Store today. If you haven’t already bookmarked this site yet, do so now and thank us later! I set a reminder in my phone every Tuesday to alert me to download the free shape of the week. You can also access the Silhouette Design Store from the Silhouette Studio® and Silhouette 3D® software.

All right, let’s get started.

What is the Silhouette Design Store?

The online and in-software Design Store allows you to download different types of designs to use with your Silhouette machines. You can look through the categories of designs using the menu or find designs by using certain keywords in the search bar.

What types of designs are found in the Design Store?

Regular Cut Designs

Regular cut designs are intended to be simply cut with the Silhouette and used in any project. Some regular cut designs are simple silhouettes and some are intricate designs with multiple pieces. When purchasing designs, you will see a thumbnail of the design. This image is clean, visually appealing, and represents what the design should look like when cut and assembled.  It also shows no cut lines. I’m a visual learner, so let’s take a look at what I am talking about below.

As you can see below, the thumbnail shows what your project will look like once it is completed.Pig_ Regular Cut

When you open this shape in Silhouette Studio®, it will open with just the cut lines. This allows you to resize, ungroup, and cut the different components on different colored paper. Or if you plan to print this shape using your printer, you can fill the different components with the desired colors to turn your image into a Print & Cut design. What is a Print & Cut design? Keep on reading!

Print & Cut Designs

Silhouette Studio® has the capability to print designs with special registration marks.  These marks can be read by the Silhouette via an internal optical sensor and used to align the cutting blade perfectly to the printed material.  Designs that are intended to be printed on a home printer and then cut out with the Silhouette are referred to as Print & Cut designs.

When you open this design in Silhouette Studio® it will open just like the image previewed in the thumbnail.Print and Cut Preview

Sketch Designs

The Silhouette machine has the capability to draw designs with a pen instead of cutting.  This is accomplished by removing the blade from the machine and replacing it with a Silhouette sketch pen or pen holder.  When the Silhouette is loaded with a pen instead of a blade, all normal cut lines are drawn instead of cut.  While any digital design can be drawn instead of cut, some designs are created specifically for sketching and could not realistically be cut, like the design below.

Sketch designs work perfectly with our PixScan™ technology. Not sure what that is? Learn more about PixScan™ here.Sketch Design

Rhinestone Templates

Certain Silhouette designs are intended to be used as templates for Silhouette heat transfer rhinestones. When these templates are cut in specific sizes, Silhouette rhinestones can easily be brushed into the templates’ holes and can then be easily transferred to a variety of projects.

Rhinestone templates are essentially a series of specifically-sized circles. It is critical that the holes in the rhinestone templates are not resized once you open the design in Silhouette Studio®.

For a step-by-step walk through on how Silhouette rhinestones work, please refer to the Rhinestone Starter Guide.Rhinestone

Printable Patterns

Printable patterns are unique in that they do not require a Silhouette electronic cutting tool to be created. Rather, the patterns are printed from the Silhouette Studio® software using a printer. What is really fun about these designs is that you can fill different shapes using these patterns and then can cut out the shapes using the Print & Cut feature.

Craft Fonts

We also sell fonts through our Silhouette Design Store. Once you purchase your font, they can be accessed like any other font on your computer. You can then use your fonts to add detail to your projects or cut them as individual shapes!

Premium Fonts

Silhouette Studio® features a great selection of premium fonts, which allow you to choose from amazing glyphs for extra special effects and flourishes. Premium fonts take your projects to the next level!

3D Paper Crafts

Similar to our regular cut files, 3D crafts are cut files that can be assembled to create a 3D object. Many of our contributing artists in the Silhouette Design Store will provide an external link with instructions on how to assemble each 3D shape.

3D Prints and Snapkits

We’ve got 3D designs that have been optimized just for our 3D printer, the Silhouette Alta®, and our 3D printing software, Silhouette 3D®. In addition to the practical designs, like this paperclip, there are also designs that are just for fun, like earrings or cupcake toppers.

To make our 3D printable designs even better, we have what are called Snapkits, which allow you to build and customize your own 3D objects. Simply pick your pieces and add them to your design.

How do I search for different file types?

If you are looking for a specific type of file, you can filter your search on the Silhouette Design Store. Open one of the categories listed in the menu or search designs using a keyword in the search bar. When the design results come up, go to the left-hand side of the screen.

Click on the “File Type” drop-down menu, and you’ll see a list of file types you can choose from and filter your results. You can also search for designs that have .SVG files or commercial licenses available. If you are unsure what the file type is, you can refer to the icon guide below.

If a design does not have an icon, it can be assumed that it is a regular cut file.

How do I access purchased designs in the Silhouette software?

In the Silhouette Studio®, there are tabs on the top right-hand side. Click the Library  tab to access your library and the Store tab to access the Silhouette Design Store.

Once you decided which design you would like to use, double-click it to pull the image into the design page of Silhouette Studio®.

Phew, we made it! Thank you for sticking with us. We are so excited to share posts about how all of the features in Silhouette Studio® work.

Happy crafting!

If you’ve done much shopping in the Silhouette Design Store, you’ve probably noticed the option to include an SVG file with your purchase. But how do you know whether or not you really need the SVG? Or what to do with the SVG once you’ve purchased it? This tutorial will help answer those questions!

Do you really need an SVG?

If you plan to only use the design with your Silhouette, the answer is “no”. All Design Store shapes come in .studio format, which is the Silhouette proprietary file type. That’s all you need when working with a Silhouette machine*.

However, if you plan to use the design in any other application or with any other brand of machine, you will definitely need the SVG. Examples include:

There is one exception to this rule, however. I always choose the SVG and Commercial Use options for the weekly Design Store freebies. These options are also free and you never know when they might come in handy!

*Because .studio files are proprietary, they cannot be sold by anyone other than the Silhouette Design Store. For this reason, SVG files are the perfect option when purchasing files from other sources. Keep in mind that you will need Designer Edition or above in order to open the SVG in Silhouette Studio.

How to purchase and download a Design Store SVG

Step 1: Purchase the SVG version of the shape

In this example, I’m using the Home Sweet Home design by Kristen Magee (Design Store ID 256747).

Home Sweet Home by Kristen Magee

If you have credit in your Design Store account, click on the Express option to bypass the checkout process and add the Studio file directly to your Library, then click Proceed.

Step 2: Download the file to your hard drive

When you see the second popup message, click on Download Item, then Direct Download. (You can also set up your account to automatically download your order each time.) Be sure to make a note of which folder you specify for the download. I have a folder on my desktop labeled “Silhouette Design Store”

Silhouette Design Store Express Download
Silhouette Design Store Direct Download

If you don’t have credit in your account, you will be given the Direct Download option once you complete the traditional checkout process.

Step 3: Unzip the File

Once the file is downloaded, unzip the file so that the design will be ready to use in Silhouette Studio.

What if I already own the .studio file?

If you’ve already purchased a design in .studio format and later on decide you need the SVG option as well, does that mean you have to purchase the designs all over again? Not exactly. Let’s use the Crafting is Always a Good Idea design (Design Store ID 293930) as an example.

One of my absolute favorite things about the Silhouette Design Store is that I can very easily tell which shapes I’ve already purchased.

Notice that once I click on the thumbnail for the design, there is no option to add the shapes to my cart or use the Express Checkout feature since I already own this design.

However, once I check the box for SVG, the Express Checkout and “Add to Cart” options reappear. The price shown is the difference between the purchase price of an SVG and the Studio format previously purchased.

The SVG format can then be purchased and downloaded in the same manner as described previously.

If you found this information helpful, be sure to share it to Pinterest!

I hope this tutorial has made it easier for you to decide when to purchase an SVG from the Silhouette Design Store as well as how to dowload and access the ones you’ve already purchased. If you have any questions, leave a comment below or come ask over in the Silhouette Crafters by Design Facebook group. I’m always happy to help!
