Engine and Transmission

Chevrolet Spark is powered by the high capacity engine that offers high engine performance, power and acceleration. It is equipped with the L, cc, S-TEC (Smart-Tec) petrol engine that is optimized with many advanced technologies like Sequential MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection), Dual Distributor Less Ignition (DDLI) System, Motorized Throttle Intake System (MTIS) and Advanced Optical Sensors. Powering by these newer technological innovations results high engine performance with excellent mileage. This engine of Chevrolet Spark is capable to produce 63bhp of maximum power at rpm. Chevrolet is slated to launch diesel variant of Beat Chevrolet Beat Diesel. Beat diesel engine generates 57bhp of peak power and Nm of peak torque.

Specifications, details, graphs, pictures and other information regarding the powertrain is placed in this section.

Performance

On the road, the Chevrolet spark is good and serves the purpose. Though there is little lag initially when the L mill breathes LPG, the transfer between the modes is smooth. Also the spark doesn’t feel weak in LPG mode. The difference in performance is not discernible. However the top end performance is little compromised. But again who is going to cruise with spark LPG in golden quadrilateral. It takes nearly 20 seconds to hit kmph. Chevrolet spark Review

Template:Infobox AutomobileTemplate:Commons category The Daewoo Matiz is a city car produced by the South Korean automaker GM Daewoo, marketed worldwide since when it replaced the Daewoo Tico. It is available solely as a five-door hatchback with two engine configurations. The Matiz was originally designed by Italdesign Giugiaro, and has received two facelifts. Various generations of the car have been sold under both Daewoo and various GM brands, and have been manufactured and marketed under license agreements by local automakers in several countries. The Matiz was built between and over 2,3 millions units[1] in the world. The Matiz was at the center of a international intellectual property rights controversy, with the design of the M copied outright by Chinese manufacturer Chery in its QQ.

First generation[]

Template:Infobox Automobile generation

M (–)[]

File:Matiz in.jpg

The production of Daewoo Matiz started in and it was sold in South Korea and many European markets with the code name M. The exterior design is based on the Lucciola, a Fiat Cinquecento concept by Italdesign Giugiaro[2] which had been rejected by Fiat. The litre gasoline engine and the transmission were carryovers from the Daewoo Tico. Engineering was carried out at Daewoo's Worthing Technical Centre in England. The car became the best selling Daewoo model in Europe and in India for the next four years. The Matiz was originally launched with just a &#;L 3-cylinder engine. This engine was developed from the TICO unit by Tickford, a UK company based in Milton Keynes. The Tickford connection was acknowledged in the brochures distributed in UK showrooms.

Copying controversy[]

Also marketed in China as the Chevrolet Spark, the Matiz has been at the center of an industrial rights controversy ever since a very similar car, the Chery QQ, had been introduced by local manufacturer Chery Automobile. GM sued Chery, alleging piracy of the Spark design,[3] and proving the extent of the copy in that the doors of the Chery car and Chevrolet Spark were completely interchangeable.[4] GM China Group indicated the two vehicles "shared remarkably identical body structure, exterior design, interior design and key components." [3] MotorAuthority.com called the QQ a "carbon copy." [5] The International Herald Tribune in a article, referred to the QQ as a clone.[6] Putting the controversy in important context, the Detroit News reported that "the dispute reflects the confusion, risks and ambitions in China's new auto industry, where global carmakers are battling pugnacious upstarts for a piece of what may become the world's largest auto market."[7]

M (–present)[]

It was designed at Daewoo's Worthing Technical Centre in England and introduced in South Korea in late , and exported from The front-end structure was modified to accommodate a 4-cylinder engine, although the introduction of this engine, the litre S-Tec unit was delayed until after Daewoo's takeover by General Motors in [8]. M is still produced by UzDaewooAuto in Uzbekistan. In Japan it was sold under the name GM Daewoo Matiz II.

Second generation[]

Template:Infobox Automobile generation In the Matiz received substantial modifications (M), previewed by the Chevrolet M3X concept car shown at Paris Motor Show. The upper body was significantly revised based again on a design from Italdesign Giugiaro, the S-Tec engines were updated and the car's drag coefficient was lowered, resulting in better fuel economy. The interior was also significantly revised, one notable feature of this car being its centre-mounted instrument cluster. The platform was also revised, with a twist-beam rear suspension system replacing the previous 3-link beam axle, and the front suspension making use of cast, rather than pressed and fabricated, lower control arms.

In , the cc engine was revised to fall below the g/km level, thus qualifying for the UK's £35 road tax band and no London Congestion Charge. In Europe it was sold under the name Chevrolet Matiz but in Italy exist the LPG version was called Chevrolet Matiz Eco Logic[9]. The Matiz Eco Logic was built from to in over vehicles by BRC Gas Equipment in Cherasco, Cuneo (Italy)[10]. In South Korea, where it is sold only with a cc engine and following the introduction of M Matiz (Matiz Creative), the M Matiz was renamed to Matiz Classic.[11]Chevrolet Spark LPG: was a version for the Indian market with Sequential Injection-type LPG kit. Available models include L PS and L LS. The car was unveilled on World Environment Day in New Delhi.[12]Chevrolet Spark Muzic Special Edition (): was a version of Chevrolet Spark for the Indian market, with following features:[13]

  • Body coloured outside rear view mirrors
  • Turn indicators mounted on ORVM
  • Attractive body graphics
  • Body coloured door handles
  • Special edition badging
  • New sporty upholstery for interiors
  • Remote keyless entry

Safety[]

The Chevrolet Matiz scored three stars (with one strike through) in the EuroNCAP crash test: "The final adult occupant protection star is struck through because there was an unacceptably high risk of life-threatening injury to the chest in side impact." test: "Overall this is a creditable performance from a car without a side airbag."[14] By contrast, the pre Daewoo Matiz was awarded 72% in the side impact Euro NCAP In Europe, the Matiz is equipped with front seatbelt pretensioners, front seatbelt load limiters, driver and passenger frontal airbags and ISOFIX rear anchorages.

Third generation[]

Template:Infobox Automobile generation The redesigned Matiz (codenamed M) is based on the Chevrolet Beat concept car.

Concept[]

File:Chevrolet Beat concept front.jpg

The Chevrolet Beat was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show alongside two other concept vehicles, the Trax and the Groove. The Beat is a front-drive, three-door hatchback concept, derived from the Daewoo Kalos. It was built in India,[15] and designed by GM Daewoo in South Korea. It is powered by a &#;L turbocharged gasoline engine mated to an automatic transmission.[16] The Beat concept sports a Vertigo Green exterior paint job with the same hue carried over to parts of the interior. Its profile is high at the rear and tapering down evenly to the front of the grille. Headlights that appear to extend all the way from the base of the grille to the base of the windshield are LED-type. Oversize 17&#;inch wheels barely hide the matching green paint of disc brakes. Twin taillights that extend upward to the back-up lights are also LED's. In early , GM conducted a poll testing the relative popularity of the Beat, Trax and Groove concepts on a Chevrolet website,[17] with the Beat receiving nearly 50% of the vote, which ultimately determined the car making it into production. This car was designed to appeal to young car buyers in urban markets, infusing the energy, diversity and excitement of urban life into a car that would deliver good-looking fun, fuel economy and value.

Production[]

File daewoo matiz creative 2.jpg

GM presented a pre-production version of the Chevrolet Beat carrying the Chevrolet Spark nameplate at the North American International Auto Show. The production version was announced at the North American International Auto Show, but only the Beat concept was shown at the time.[18] The production Chevrolet Spark was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.[19] It is expected to be available in the first quarter of in Europe,[20] followed by other markets worldwide, with US sales set to begin in early [21] Commercial production of a 5-door Chevrolet Beat started from December 15, in Halol, India. It was launched in India on January 5, during Auto Expo New Delhi, India.[22] The GM Daewoo Matiz version was unveiled in Seoul Motor Show [23] The Auto platform was replaced by GM Gamma platform, developed by GM Daewoo engineers.

At the New York Auto Show , Chevrolet showed three prototypes of A-segment cars: the Groove , the Beat and the Trax , with the intention of mass-producing some of them. Eventually the Beat was chosen, although the name Spark was used to launch it as the replacement for the little model. Only the Daewoo version , destined for the South Korean market, will retain the Matiz name. The production version was officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show .

Initially, its gasoline engines are larger, with two two in-line naturally aspirated cylinders: a 1-liter 66 hp and a liter 78 hp. The press speculated that a liter diesel option will be added, identical to that offered in other General Motors cars.

In Colombia, since July , GM Colmotores began to assemble and market the so-called Spark GT; and together with the General Motors plant in Chile , they have been the first South American countries to produce and market it.

Chevrolet Spark

Motor vehicle

The Chevrolet Spark (Korean: 쉐보레 스파크) is a city car manufactured by General Motors's subsidiary GM Korea, currently in its fourth generation. The vehicle initially introduced in as the Daewoo Matiz (Korean: 대우 마티즈).

In , General Motors purchased Daewoo Motors, which had the vehicle being marketed with several GM marques and nameplates. The third generation was predominantly marketed under its Chevrolet brand, including in North America as the Chevrolet Spark. The fourth generation was launched in , also known as the Holden Spark in Australia and New Zealand.[1] It also serves as the basis for the Opel Karl in Europe,[2] Vauxhall Viva in the UK,[3][4] and VinFast Fadil in Vietnam, the latter manufactured under license.

A limited-production all-electric version, the Chevrolet Spark EV, was released in the U.S. in selected markets in California and Oregon in June The Spark EV was the first all-electric passenger car marketed by General Motors since the EV1 was discontinued in [5][6]

In the South Korean market, the Spark complies with South Korean "light car" (Korean: 경차, romanized:&#;Gyeongcha) regulations, which strictly regulate overall vehicle dimensions and engine capacity.[7]

M (–)[edit]

The production of Daewoo Matiz started in , and it was marketed in South Korea and many European markets, internally designated the M. The exterior design is based on the Lucciola, a Fiat Cinquecento concept by Fabrizio Giugiaro at Italdesign, which had been rejected by Fiat.[13] The litre gasoline engine and the transmission were carryovers from the Daewoo Tico, but it now uses a multipoint fuel injection system.[14] Engineering was carried out at Daewoo's Worthing Technical Centre in England. The car became the best selling Daewoo model in Europe and in India for the next four years.[15]

It was developed on the basis of the Daewoo Tico, version under license of the Suzuki Alto, with which both Tico and Matiz share mechanicals and suspensions. From this origin derives its characteristic narrow width, imposed by the Japanese kei car tax category.

The Matiz was originally launched with just a litre straight-three engine. It developed a maximum power of 51&#;hp (38&#;kW) and a maximum torque of &#;N⋅m (51&#;lb⋅ft), and had a combined consumption of &#;l/&#;km (44&#;mpg&#;imp). It had a top speed of &#;km/h (89&#;mph) and could reach &#;km/h (62&#;mph) in 17 seconds.[14] This engine was developed from the Tico unit by Tickford, a UK company based in Milton Keynes. The Tickford connection was acknowledged in the brochures distributed in UK showrooms.

It was released with three trim levels: E, S, and SE. The latter had air conditioning, wheel covers, body-colored bumpers, rear spoiler, fog lights, and a stereo, with optional features such as roof rails, power steering, central locking, electric front windows, antilock brakes, and driver airbag.[16] In certain markets, it was also available with an automatic transmission.

Te M is still produced by GM-Uzbekistan (previously UzDaewooAuto) in Uzbekistan. The car was launched to the Russian market as the Ravon Matiz in , but was soon discontinued.[17] In South Korea and Japan this updated Matiz was sold under the name Daewoo Matiz II.

Lechi (China)[edit]

In China, the car was marketed as the Chevrolet Lechi. It remained in production until , when an updated version was introduced as the Baojun Lechi. It is to be offered under both Chevrolet and Baojun brands during a transition period.[18] The Lechi has also received certain powertrain updates, making the car economical enough to qualify for a subsidy and a tax break from the Chinese government.[18]

Copying controversy[edit]

The Chevrolet Matiz/Spark (left) and the Chery QQ (right): The design of QQ is a copy of the original Matiz/Spark.

The Chery QQ3, then known as the Chery QQ, became the center of an industrial copyright and intellectual rights controversy, as GM claimed the car was a copy of the Daewoo Matiz. GM executives demonstrated the extent of the design duplication, noting for example that the doors of the QQ and those of the Spark are interchangeable[20] without modification.

GM China Group indicated the two vehicles "shared remarkably identical body structure, exterior design, interior design, and key components"[20] MotorAuthority.com[21] and Car and Driver called the QQ a "carbon copy", while the International Herald Tribune, in a article, referred to it as a clone.[22]

The Detroit News reported that "the dispute reflects the confusion, risks, and ambitions in China's new auto industry, where global carmakers are battling pugnacious upstarts for a piece of what may become the world's largest auto market."[23]

Second generation (M, M; )[edit]

Motor vehicle

In , the Matiz received substantial modifications (M), previewed by the Chevrolet M3X concept car shown at Paris Motor Show. The upper body was revised, based again on a design by Italdesign Giugiaro, the S-Tec engines were updated, and the car's drag coefficient was lowered, resulting in better fuel economy. The interior was also significantly revised, notably with a centre-mounted instrument cluster. The platform was also revised, with a twist-beam rear suspension system replacing the previous three-link beam axle, and the front suspension using cast, rather than pressed and fabricated lower control arms.

In , the cc engine was revised to fall below the g/km level, thus qualifying for the UK's £35 road tax band and no London congestion charge.

In Europe, it was marketed under the names Chevrolet Matiz and Chevrolet Spark. In Italy, the LPG version was called Chevrolet Matiz Eco Logic; it was built from to in over 60, vehicles by BRC Gas Equipment in Cherasco, Cuneo, Italy.

In South Korea, where it was marketed only with an cc engine and following the introduction of M Matiz (Matiz Creative), the M Matiz was renamed to Matiz Classic Production reach million worldwide during the first 10 years.[24]

As of , VIDAMCO of Vietnam produces the Matiz M as the Chevrolet Spark Lite in complete knock-down (CKD) form at its Hanoi production facility.[25]

In India, the local manufacturer GM India produced two special editions of this generation - the Chevrolet Spark LPG, a version equipped with a sequential injection-type liquified petroleum gas kit, unveiled on the World Environment Day in New Delhi, and the Chevrolet Spark Muzic, introduced in

The redesigned Matiz (codenamed M) was launched in and is based on the Chevrolet Beat concept car. Although sold globally as the Chevrolet Spark, in India, this model retains the Beat name from the concept car, as the second-generation Spark continues to be sold in this market. In some Latin American markets, the Beat name was also used, while Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Peru received it as the Spark GT. Prior to the elimination of the Daewoo marque in South Korea, the third-generation Spark was marketed as the Daewoo Matiz Creative. This marque was less successful than the previous models.[30]

Concept[edit]

The Chevrolet Beat was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show alongside two other concept vehicles, the Trax and the Groove. The Beat is a three-door hatchback concept, derived from the Daewoo Kalos. It was designed by GM Daewoo in South Korea. It is powered by a &#;L turbocharged gasoline engine mated to an automatic transmission.[31]

This version was featured in the Michael Bay movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen as Skids, alongside the GM Trax subcompact SUV. The Beat concept sports a Vertigo Green exterior paint job with the same hue carried over to parts of the interior. Its profile is high at the rear and tapering down evenly to the front of the grille. Headlights that appear to extend all the way from the base of the grille to the base of the windshield are LED type. It feature inch wheels with matching green paint of the disc brakes. Twin taillights that extend upward to the back-up lights are also LEDs.

In early , GM conducted a poll testing the relative popularity of the Beat, Trax, and Groove concepts on a Chevrolet website,[32] with the Beat receiving nearly 50% of the vote, which ultimately determined the car making it into production.

GM displayed a prototype woodie version of the forthcoming Chevrolet Spark for the Paris Motor Show.[33]

Production[edit]

GM presented a preproduction version of the Chevrolet Beat carrying the Chevrolet Spark nameplate at the North American International Auto Show. The production version was announced at that show, but only the Beat concept was shown.[34] The production Chevrolet Spark was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.[35] It became available in Europe in the first quarter of , followed by other markets worldwide, with US sales set to begin in early for model year. Commercial production of a five-door Chevrolet Beat started from December 15, , in Halol, Gujarat, India. It was launched in India on January 5, , during Auto Expo in New Delhi.

The GM Daewoo Matiz version was unveiled in the Seoul Motor Show.[36]

The Holden version, named Barina Spark, was revealed at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney in October. It was discontinued in February

With the M, the original Suzuki platform was replaced by GM Global Small Vehicles platform, developed by GM Daewoo engineers.

In North America, the Spark was first delivered to GM dealerships in Mexico for the model year, but did not replace the Chevrolet Matiz (formerly Pontiac G2 Matiz), which was sold until The United States version of the Chevrolet Spark went into production on April 16, , and arrived in dealerships in August For in North America, the automatic transmission is a Jatco M4M-CVT7[37] continuously variable transmission (CVT) and the final drive ratio lowered to [38][39] The CVT gives better fuel mileage overall than the previous 4 speed automatic, and changing the final drive ratio from its previous [40][41] reduces engine noise and increases fuel economy on the highway while increasing noise and reducing fuel mileage in the city. Industry sources have commented on the ongoing reliability issues with the Jatco CVT transmissions.[42]

The Spark was the fastest-selling car in the United States for July , with just 6 days from when they arrived at dealers to when they were sold.[43]

On 5 August , the Beat was discontinued in Mexico due to the Talegaon, India, plant being closed, leaving the Aveo as their entry-level model in said market.[44]

Beat diesel[edit]

General Motors launched the diesel version of Chevrolet Beat in the Indian auto market on July 25, [48] The 3-cylinder, cc turbodiesel engine produces &#;PS (46&#;kW; 62&#;hp) and &#;N⋅m (&#;lbf⋅ft) of torque, resulting in good acceleration and pick up. The L, cc diesel engine enables the car to reach &#;km/h (62&#;mph) in 16 seconds and a top speed of &#;km/h (88&#;mph). Chevrolet Beat Diesel offers mileage of 24 km/l (56 mpg) as per the Automotive Research Association of India test reports. The engine is based on the Fiat Multijet diesel technology.[49]

Beat sedan/notchback (NB)[edit]

Chevrolet Beat NB (Mexico) ()

A four-door sedan version was unveiled in a near-production prototype form at the Auto Expo in India as the Chevrolet Essentia.[50][51] After GM halted domestic sales in India in , the Essentia was ultimately cancelled for the Indian market. The model was instead exported to Latin America either in finished form or as knock-down kits to GM Colmotores as the Beat or Beat NB. The Chevrolet Beat and its notchback version were discontinued from the Mexican market in early August , giving the production run from model years.

Spark/Beat Activ[edit]

Domino's DXP[edit]

The Domino's DXP (short for "Delivery eXPert") is a Spark customized by Roush Performance for Domino's Pizza, based on the mid-level 1LT trim of the Spark, where it was converted to a revival of a canopy express vehicle which was popular from the s to the s. For this car, the front and rear passenger seats are removed and replaced with storage compartments that can carry 80 pizzas, two 2-liter bottles of soda, and dipping sauces. The left rear passenger door is converted into a warming oven that can only be unlocked with the key fob or a button within the driver's door frame. The Spark's Chevrolet front grille is replaced with a custom-made black front grille with the "Domino's" logo, as well as a custom lower body kit, and all DXP cars have a custom Domino's-themed vinyl wrap with a lighted Domino's roof topper. All DXP cars are equipped with the factory SiriusXMSatellite Radio and OnStartelematics systems. Production is limited to less than units and once each car reaches , miles, it will be retired and returned to Roush, where it will be restored to stock form and sold as a used Spark (all four factory seatbelts and airbags are left fully intact, and covered by plastic panels).[59][60][61] Despite the intentions of Domino's to eventually retire the DXP and leave none remaining, several wrecked DXPs have been salvaged by private individuals with the intention of retaining them as rare cars when the rest of the fleet is retired. The situation has resulted in threatened legal action by a Domino's franchisee.[62][63]

Spark EV[edit]

Motor vehicle

The Spark EV was a limited production 5-door hatchback battery electric vehicle produced by Chevrolet in – Spark EV was a compliance car specifically designed to meet the government mandate on automobile manufacturers to increase the penetration of electric automobiles into the fleet of all operating vehicles on the road in certain US states, but was not intended for broad adoption in the broader US market, nor produced and sold in quantities that would meet demand for such vehicles in the open market where no such government rules exist.[68][69]

In October , General Motors announced the planned production of the Chevrolet Spark EV, an all-electric version of the third-generation Chevrolet Spark, with availability limited to select markets. The production version was unveiled at the November Los Angeles Auto Show.[70]

Within the framework of GM's vehicle electrification strategy,[71] the Spark EV was the first all-electric passenger car marketed by General Motors in the U.S. since the EV1, which was discontinued in [5] The Spark EV was released in the U.S. in selected markets in California and Oregon in June [6] The electric car went on sale in Maryland in the second quarter of , the first East Coast state where the Spark EV was available.[72] As of December&#;[update], U.S. sales totaled 1, units.[73] The Spark EV was discontinued in December , when Chevrolet began selling the Bolt, which had a much longer range.[74][needs update]

In October , GM Korea announced it would start making and selling the Spark EV in Korea in [75] Retail sales began in South Korea in October [76] GM also announced plans to sell the Spark EV in limited quantities in Canada and select European markets.[77][78] It was available in Canada for limited fleet sales.[79]

The electric car was initially powered by a kWhLithium iron phosphate battery pack supplied by A Systems.[5][80] In a white-paper,[81] The production version featured a 97&#;kW (&#;hp) motor, providing &#;N⋅m (&#;lb⋅ft) of torque.[66][82] The Spark EV can be fast-charged to 80% of capacity in 20 minutes using an optional CCS/SAE Combo Type 1 connector, and charging time increases to about seven hours using a dedicated volt charging station or about 17 hours using a standard household volt outlet.[citation needed]

In , for the model year, the battery pack supplier was changed to LG Chem[65] which resulted in a smaller capacity pack (19&#;kWh) while maintaining the same EV range. The drive ratio was also changed from to as well, with a new motor with torque reduced to &#;N⋅m (&#;ft⋅lb).[83]

These nameplates feature revised instrument panel styling, revised side swaging and a small quarter light in the rear door, displacing the high-mounted rear door handles of the Spark.

In North America, at introduction, the fourth-generation Spark was marketed in LS, 1LT and 2LT (and subsequently, the Aktiv) trim levels, each powered by a &#;L, 1,&#;cc (85&#;cu&#;in) LV7DOHCI4 (gasoline) producing 98&#;hp (73&#;kW) and 94 pound-feet (&#;N⋅m) torque. The Korean domestic version as well as Opel, Vauxhall and Holden variants used a &#;L engine producing 75 hp and 70 pound-feet torque. As a 3 cylinder engine, this engine weighs significantly less than the four cylinder and offers competative performance.

All trim levels featured a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with an AM/FM radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Autosmartphone integration, full Bluetooth capabilities, OnStar4GLTEWi-Fi service (provided by AT&T with a three-month, three-gigabyte (3GB) paid trial subscription), USB and auxiliary audio inputs, and a rearview backup camera system. 1LT and above models also add SiriusXMSatellite Radio with an included paid trial subscription.

The Spark was launched for the Mexican market in November 4, , as a model and only offered in the LT and LTZ trim lines, both of them powered by a liter engine.[88]

In Colombia, the Matiz was imported by Daewoo distributors between and and then GM Colmotores began to assemble and sell it branded as Chevrolet Spark. In , a taxi version called 7/24 was launched. In Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela, it is sold as the Chevrolet Spark. In Argentina, the first generation was sold as the Daewoo Matiz through Daewoo importers. The second generation was sold as Chevrolet Spark through Chevrolet dealers. Since , the third generation is available. In Chile, Ecuador, and Peru, the former version is sold as the Chevrolet Spark, and the latest version as the Chevrolet Spark GT. In Paraguay, it was initially sold as Daewoo Matiz, but from , it is sold through Chevrolet dealers.

In North America, the Spark was initially marketed in three trim levels, 1LS, 1LT, and 2LT, as well as the EV. For the model year, an ACTIV trim level was added, is based on the mid-level 1LT trim. It includes a unique exterior body trim interior accent trim panels, unique fifteen-inch (15") aluminum-alloy wheels with dark gray-painted accents, and roof rails.[95]

In Canada, the Spark has been marketed as the country's least expensive new car from the model year, with a starting price of $9, For that price, the base Spark does not include air conditioning, and comes with a manual transmission. [96] It competed with the similarly priced Nissan Micra (until that car's discontinuation in Canada as of the model year).

Africa[edit]

In South Africa, General Motors South Africa (GMSA) announced on October 2, , plans to manufacture the new Chevrolet Spark at its Port Elizabeth plant. The second generation Spark is still sold, though branded as a 'Spark Lite'.

Middle East[edit]

In Iran, the Matiz was produced (first imported and later assembled) and known as Daewoo Matiz. In Israel, UMI (Universal Motors Israel) announced on January 18, the marketing commencement of the L Chevrolet Spark model.

Australasia[edit]

Within Australia and New Zealand, the Spark was sold through Holden. Sales commenced in February , with two specifications launched. The LS was the base specification, which features steel wheels, central locking as well as Holden's MyLink infotainment system. Building upon the LS, the LT adds 15 inch Alloy Wheels, Keyless entry and a rear view camera.[97]

With Light Car sales sliding in Australia, Holden announced in April that they would discontinue the Spark in Australia. Although, it continued to be sold in New Zealand until the demise of the Holden brand in [98][99]

Chevrolet Spark

Wikipedia Page

In the South Korean market, the Spark complies with South Korean "light car" (Korean: 경차, romanized: Gyeongcha) regulations, which strictly regulate overall vehicle dimensions and engine capacity.[7]

It developed a maximum power of 51 hp (38 kW) and a maximum torque of  N⋅m (51 lb⋅ft), and had a combined consumption of  l/ km (44 mpg‑imp). It had a top speed of  km/h (89 mph) and could reach  km/h (62 mph) in 17 seconds.[14] This engine was developed from the Tico unit by Tickford, a UK company based in Milton Keynes.

M (–)

This facelift was designed at Daewoo's Worthing Technical Centre in England, and introduced in South Korea in late , and exported from The front-end structure was modified to accommodate a four-cylinder engine, although the introduction of this engine, the litre S-Tec unit, was delayed until after Daewoo's takeover by General Motors in

Lechi (China)

In China, the car was marketed as the Chevrolet Lechi. It remained in production until , when an updated version was introduced as the Baojun Lechi. It is to be offered under both Chevrolet and Baojun brands during a transition period.[18] The Lechi has also received certain powertrain updates, making the car economical enough to qualify for a subsidy and a tax break from the Chinese government.[18]

Copying controversy

Second generation (M, M; )

Concept

The Chevrolet Beat was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show alongside two other concept vehicles, the Trax and the Groove. The Beat is a three-door hatchback concept, derived from the Daewoo Kalos. It was designed by GM Daewoo in South Korea. It is powered by a  L turbocharged gasoline engine mated to an automatic transmission.[31]

Production

Facelifts

The first facelift was revealed at the Paris Motor Show. It features a redesigned dual-port grille and front bumper, and restyled headlamp covers and foglamps.[45] The North American model, launched for the model year, uses the facelifted styling. The first facelift model was launched in India in February [46][47] The facelifted Holden Barina Spark retained the existing front bumper, with its front grille being redesigned.

Beat diesel

General Motors launched the diesel version of Chevrolet Beat in the Indian auto market on July 25, [48] The 3-cylinder, cc turbodiesel engine produces  PS (46 kW; 62 hp) and  N⋅m ( lbf⋅ft) of torque, resulting in good acceleration and pick up. The L, cc diesel engine enables the car to reach  km/h (62 mph) in 16 seconds and a top speed of  km/h (88 mph). Chevrolet Beat Diesel offers mileage of 24 km/l (56 mpg) as per the Automotive Research Association of India test reports. The engine is based on the Fiat Multijet diesel technology.[49]

Beat sedan/notchback (NB)

Chevrolet Beat NB (Mexico) ()

A four-door sedan version was unveiled in a near-production prototype form at the Auto Expo in India as the Chevrolet Essentia.[50][51] After GM halted domestic sales in India in , the Essentia was ultimately cancelled for the Indian market. The model was instead exported to Latin America either in finished form or as knock-down kits to GM Colmotores as the Beat or Beat NB. The Chevrolet Beat and its notchback version were discontinued from the Mexican market in early August , giving the production run from model years.

Spark/Beat Activ

Chevrolet Spark GT Activ (Chile)

A crossover-styled version is also available in South America as the Chevrolet Spark GT Activ or Chevrolet Beat Activ. The concept version was showcased at the Auto Expo in India,[52] however the production version was never sold in India as GM pulled out from the market. The production version is available in several Latin American markets starting from [53][54]

Sales began on September 1, [30] The Groove name used in one of the rejected concepts returned as a trim level.[57] In , this car is renamed as Chevrolet Spark, as part of phasing out the Daewoo brand in South Korea, making way for the Chevrolet brand.
  • Australia: the Spark was released in October as the MJ series Holden Barina Spark. It came in two guises; CD and CDX. The Holden Barina Spark was discontinued in February
  • Uzbekistan: the Chevrolet Spark was released on August 26, It comes in three trim levels: L ( L manual), LS ( L manual/auto) and LT ( L manual).
  • Russia: the Uzbekistan-made Spark has been sold in Russia as the Ravon R2 since It is available with the  L engine and automatic gearbox.[58]

Domino's DXP

Spark EV

Within the framework of GM's vehicle electrification strategy,[71] the Spark EV was the first all-electric passenger car marketed by General Motors in the U.S. since the EV1, which was discontinued in [5] The Spark EV was released in the U.S. in selected markets in California and Oregon in June [6] The electric car went on sale in Maryland in the second quarter of , the first East Coast state where the Spark EV was available.[72] As of December [update], U.S. sales totaled 1, units.[73] The Spark EV was discontinued in December , when Chevrolet began selling the Bolt, which had a much longer range.[74][needs update]

The electric car was initially powered by a kWhLithium iron phosphate battery pack supplied by A Systems.[5][80] In a white-paper,[81] The production version featured a 97 kW ( hp) motor, providing  N⋅m ( lb⋅ft) of torque.[66][82] The Spark EV can be fast-charged to 80% of capacity in 20 minutes using an optional CCS/SAE Combo Type 1 connector, and charging time increases to about seven hours using a dedicated volt charging station or about 17 hours using a standard household volt outlet.[citation needed]

In , for the model year, the battery pack supplier was changed to LG Chem[65] which resulted in a smaller capacity pack (19 kWh) while maintaining the same EV range. The drive ratio was also changed from to as well, with a new motor with torque reduced to  N⋅m ( ft⋅lb).[83]
