The good news is, with the release of the GTX 1080 Ti, the GTX 1080 's price is getting more discount. NVIDIA ’s xx80 cards have always been defined by high-end prices with performance that knocks on the door of extreme graphics cards – especially when overclocked. After taking the time to fully test the Pascal graphics card inside the GTX 1080, we can say without a doubt that it continues the trend.

The GTX 1080 has 8 GB RAM compared to the GTX 980 's 4 GB video memory. Unfortunately, gaming performance was not quite as impressive. Even if the GTX 1080 consistently delivers frame rate increases over the GTX 980, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti, the gain is not much to justify an upgrade.

For 1080p Full HD, we were able to play Marvel's Avengers, Borderlands 3, Anthem, Need For Speed: Heat, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War at 63 fps to 84 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 74 fps. For 1440p Quad HD, we were able to play Gears of War 5, Need For Speed: Heat, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Just Cause 4, Final Fantasy XV at 62 fps to 63 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 62 fps.

For 2160p 4K, we were able to play Forza Horizon 4, Valorant at 65 fps to 153 fps and kept frame rates hovering around 109 fps.

NVDIA’s RTX 2070 follows on from their recent release of the 2080 and 2080 Ti from their RTX 2000 series of Turing architecture GPUs. The 2070 has 2304 CUDA cores, a base/boost clock of 1410/1620 MHz, 8GB of GDRR6 memory and a memory bandwidth of 448GB/s. The RTX 2070 also features Turing NVENC which is far more efficient than CPU encoding and alleviates the need for casual streamers to use a dedicated stream PC. Traditionally NVIDIA’s 70 range has offered better value for money than the more powerful 80 GPUs. The Founders Edition 2070 has an MSRP of $599 which makes both new 1080 and used 1080 Ti GPUs decent options. The price premium over the previous generation of GPUs is, for the most part, for NVIDIA’s new ray tracing technology, and unfortunately, the benefit of this is currently unknown as there are no RTX ready games. Performance benchmarks on tangibles place the 2070 6% ahead of the 1080 in terms of effective speed and 17% behind the 1080 Ti. Nvidia RTX 2070 vs. GTX 1080

There’s no denying that the top Nvidia RTX graphics cards are the most powerful consumer cards in the world right now (even if AMD is giving them a lot of competition), but with availability what it is, sometimes buying an older card secondhand is a more affordable option. Two of the best cards from their respective generations were the RTX 2070 and the GTX 1080. But how do these cards compare, and if given the chance, which should you buy?

Availability and pricing

The GTX 1080 was originally released in May 2016 with a suggested price of $599. The RTX 2070 debuted in October 2018, priced at $500. In 2021, both of these cards haven’t been on sale for a long time, with the GTX 1080 replaced by the RTX 2080, and the RTX 2070 replaced by the RTX 2070 Super. Those again have been replaced by cards in the RTX 3000 series.

However, due to a global silicon shortage, import tariffs, and cryptocurrency mining demand in 2021, all GPUs are almost impossible to buy at fair retail prices. The GTX 1080 is going for over $400 on secondhand markets, which, for a nearly five-year-old card, is completely off the charts. The RTX 2070 is even worse, often retailing for $600 secondhand — more than it sold for when new over two years ago.

Performance

At launch, the RTX 2070 performed roughly comparably to the GTX 1080, but with newer games, and as support for ray tracing and deep learning super sampling have become more common, not only is it the more powerful card, but it can produce better-looking games at higher frame rates too.

By the numbers, both cards have a slight leg up over the other in certain specifications, and the Founders Editions don’t do anything to close those gaps. The 1080 has 2,560 CUDA cores, while the 2070 has 2,304 — although they’re based on the younger Turing architecture. The 1080 also has slightly higher clock speeds and a few more texture units. However, the 2070 sports GDDR6 memory, giving it a near 50% greater memory bandwidth. It also has a larger die size, with 3.6 billion extra transistors. That has its own efficiency and performance improvements.

This equates to a sub-10% frame rate advantage to the RTX 2070, making it the more capable card. In 2021, these cards are mostly suited to AAA games at 1440p or high frame rates at 1080p, depending on your preference and the types of games you’re playing. If you’re only playing games that demand traditional rasterization performance, either card will do a good job. But if it’s a newer game, and particularly if it has ray tracing or supports DLSS, the RTX 2070 has a huge advantage thanks to its dedicated hardware accelerators.

Ray tracing and DLSS

Alongside its newer architecture, the RTX 2070 also helps introduce RT and Tensor cores that enable ray tracing and DLSS. Of these two cards, those features are only really available on the 2070. While the 1080 can technically perform ray tracing calculations without the hardware acceleration of RT cores, it’s only going to be able to offer that at 1080p at 30 fps or less.

The list of supporting games for either or both of these technologies has grown a lot since the launch of the RTX 2070, making it a must-have feature for new GPUs. Ray tracing has full support with all of Nvidia’s latest-generation Ampere GPUs as well as AMD’s RX 6000 series. DLSS isn’t as broadly supported, and AMD doesn’t have a competing solution just yet, but its effect can’t be denied. When enabled, DLSS 2.0 makes it possible to run a game at 1440p but look very close to, or sometimes even better than, 4K. That leads to a great performance leap over native 4K rendering and makes cards that support it, like the RTX 2070, a much more attractive buy if you play or plan to play games that can enable it.

The 2070 is the new 1080 … if you can find it

The biggest difference between the 2070 and 1080 when the former first launched was price. With global GPU shortages the way they are, that’s still the case today, but in the secondhand market. You won’t be able to buy these cards new, and even if you could, you shouldn’t be paying hundreds of dollars for them. With far faster newer-generation cards like the RTX 3060 Ti, and 6700 XT sporadically available, grab one of those instead if you can.

If you are looking at either of these cards secondhand and the price isn’t too ridiculous, the RTX 2070 is by far the better buy. It’s more powerful, and its features can far better keep up with modern games and their developments than the aged 1080.

That's what we'll aim to answer here, as we examine exactly how these two graphics cards compare in terms of in-game performance, features, pricing and availability.

First up, we'll take a closer look at the features that define the RTX 20-series cards: the capacity for real-time ray tracing, deep learning super sampling (DLSS) and more. Are these game-changers that'll become the RTX series' greatest strength, or fad technologies that only serve to drive up the cost of GPUs? It's a complex topic and the answers aren't all that clear yet, but we can give you a good indication of what to expect once these features start to be supported in real games. Deep learning super-sampling (DLSS)

While real-time ray tracing gives the RTX series its name, deep learning super sampling (DLSS) could well be the more important addition. DLSS has the potential to boost frame-rates substantially in games that support it, allowing RTX cards to out-muscle their GTX competitors or to offset the performance cost of real-time ray tracing. We've produced an in-depth review of DLSS if you want to learn more, but the short version is that it works by rendering a low-resolution image which is then upscaled to your monitor's resolution. This is achieved by a deep learning algorithm, which has been trained on extremely high resolution images of the game that's being played. That allows the graphics card to deliver a final image that looks similar to one produced with traditional anti-aliasing while using half of the shading power. The practical upshot of all this is that frame-rates can go way up. In fact, in the first shipping DLSS title, Final Fantasy 15, frame-rates are boosted by a massive 40 per cent by switching from traditional TAA to DLSS. That's incredible, particularly for the mid-range RTX 2070.

Real-time ray tracing

Ray tracing refers to simulating light as it bounces realistically around a scene. This approach has historically been way too intensive to happen in real-time, but the specialised hardware of the RTX cards finally makes this a reality. While enabling real-time ray tracing in games like Battlefield 5 still has a heavy performance penalty, especially on the low-end RTX 2070, it provides for more realistic-looking lights and shadows and could even allow for some unique gameplay possibilities. If RT is well-supported by developers and the performance penalty is mitigated through DLSS, it could well become an essential feature - but at this stage, it's still too early to tell how fast the real-time ray tracing future will arrive.

Turing architecture: new rendering features

As well as RTX and DLSS, Nvidia's 20-series graphics cards include some other interesting additions. For example, new shading models like mesh shading have been included, which essentially allow the GPU to take closer control over level of detail settings, significantly freeing up CPU and GPU resources without sacrificing visual fidelity. Variable rate shading is another clever addition which reduces processing on scene elements that aren't likely to be focused on by the player. That tactic can add roughly 15 to 20 per cent to frame-rates, at least based on a Wolfenstein 2 demo we've seen, allowing another avenue for canny game developers to optimise for the new RTX cards.

The RTX 2070 also joins its 20-series fellows in offering a USB-C VirtualLink port, designed to support next-generation VR headsets to connect without using separate video and data cables. Future 8K displays will also be able to plug into your RTX 2070 through a single DisplayPort 1.4 cable at 60Hz, something that wasn't possible on GTX 10-series cards.

Streamers and game video creators might also be prompted to upgraded to the RTX 2070 through its inclusion of a more efficient NVENC encoder. The new version supports a wider range of video standards, allows for higher resolutions and doesn't sap your processor as much as the previous version. Combined together, these improvements mean that 4K streaming becomes a possibility without extremely expensive hardware - as long as you've got a fast internet connection!

RTX 2070 vs GTX 1080: performance benchmarks

Assassin's Creed Odyssey

While the RTX 2070 and the GTX 1080 will take centre stage in our performance comparison, it makes sense to include some greater context as well. This comes in the form of two higher-end Nvidia graphics card from this generation and the last, the RTX 2080 and the GTX 1080 Ti. We've also included the AMD Vega 64, Team Red's fastest graphics card at the moment. Our testing was performed at 1440p and 4K to best show the difference between these two cards, as 1080p testing is often too CPU-limited.

To give you a better idea of the raw performance of these cards, you can see some of the relevant stats in the table below. Note that Founders Edition figures are given first, with their reference equivalents in parentheses, as the RTX FE cards we tested come factory overclocked.

The RTX 2070 and GTX 1080 - a battle for the ages! Fittingly, our first test is also a historic one, as we take to the lush fields of Greece to figure out which card renders this complex scene the fastest. Hit play on the video below, and you'll see the RTX 2070 in green and the GTX 1080 in red. The RTX 2070 is the first victor here, with the new card managing 56fps at 1440p and 35fps at 4K. Compared to the GTX 1080, that's a lead of around 12 per cent at each resolution.

Assassin's Creed Unity

Next up is a prior Assassin's Creed title, the 2014 release Unity. Performance is smooth for both cards throughout, with the 2070 averaging around 73fps and the 1080 at 68fps. These are the 1440p results, but 4K is a similar situation - we're looking at the 2070 at 37fps and the 1080 at 35fps; again a difference of around five per cent. Both cards produce nicely playable 1440p frame-rates at this punishing ultra high preset, while at 4K you're looking at a console-quality 30+ frames per second with little to separate the two cards. Generally, we'd recommend swapping to high settings at 4K on either of these two cards.

Battlefield 1

2016 title Battlefield 1 is another challenging test for graphics cards. This one doesn't have an in-game cutscene that we use as a benchmark, so we've opted for a repeatable stretch of gameplay that sees us driving a British tank through French no man's land. The GTX 1080 dips low here, dropping to a little over 60fps at 1440p, while the 2070 has a much more consistent performance with the worst one per cent of frame-rates still scoring 88fps. In terms of the overall averages at 1440p, there's also a difference - the 2070 manages 114fps, while the 1080 only manages 102fps - a difference of about 10 per cent. The gap narrows at 4K, where the 2070 rounds up to 62fps on average while the 1080 comes in at 61fps. No matter which resolution you're running, you should expect a smooth experience - and gamers at 1080p or 1440p could achieve 144Hz or even higher refresh rates with a strong CPU and some settings tweakery.

Crysis 3

Released back in 2013, Crysis 3 is the oldest benchmark in our test - but it remains a stern challenge for even modern graphics cards. The GTX 1080 performs comparatively better in this older game, with only a two fps difference at 1440p and 4K. Both cards are more than playable at 1440p, but the 4K results fall some way short of the 60fps ideal.

Far Cry 5

Far Cry 5's chillaxing benchmark mode is where we arrive next. The RTX 2070 acquits itself well here, scoring over 90fps at 1440p and dropping to a still-manageable 46fps at 4K. Ghost Recon Wildlands

2017 release Ghost Recon Wildlands is the most challenging benchmark we look at, but the mid-range RTX 2070 card still manages to head off the GTX 1080 - in part, thanks to its factory overclock. On average, the 2070 manages 51fps at 1440p and 32fps at 4K, both of which are around five per cent ahead of the higher-tier last-gen card. That 4K result isn't ideal, but it's worth keeping in mind that even the mighty RTX 2080 Ti scores only 47fps in this test. We'd recommend switching to the high quality preset for a much more playable experience than the ultra preset tested here.

2016 title Rise of the Tomb Raider comes with a nice tri-partite benchmark that tests performance in three different scenes - although the actual game is altogether more challenging than the benchmark would suggest. The GTX 1080 and RTX 2070 are are on a very equal pegging here, with the RTX 2070 scoring 95fps and the GTX 1080 94fps at 1440p. It's a similar story at 4K at 50fps and 49fps, respectively.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

2018 release Shadow of the Tomb Raider didn't face universal praise from critics on launch, but it certainly includes a more realistic benchmark that better matches actual in-game performance. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is also one of the games that Nvidia claim will support RTX and DLSS in the future, although neither have yet appeared in the month or two since launch. The RTX 2070 does better here than in the last game, with scores 10 per cent ahead of the GTX 1080 at 1440p and 4K. If you're looking for the actual average frame-rates, that's 72fps for the 2070 at 1440p and 38fps at 4K; the GTX 1080 delivers 65fps at 1440p and 34fps at 4K.

The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3 is our second-to-last game benchmark, and it's one of the most illuminating too. The RTX 2070 outguns the GTX 1080 here by a substantial 15 per cent margin at 1440p, although this shrinks slightly to 13 per cent at 4K. The 2070's 95fps means that a high refresh rate 1440p monitor could be well utilised here, although at 4K the 51fps average means that you'd still be a few settings tweaks from hitting a stable 60fps.

Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus

In this id Tech 6 engine test, the RTX 2070 outperforms the GTX 1080 by around 17 per cent at 4K, with average frame-rates of 63fps and 53fps, respectively. Considering that we're at 4K using the uber graphics preset, I'd argue that's a pretty respectable result for the mid-range RTX card - even taking into account id's excellent performance optimisation. The gap is higher at 1440p, where it's around 21 per cent with both cards above 90fps.

Throughout these benchmarks, we've seen the RTX 2070 outperform the GTX 1080 by a decent margin, usually in the region of five to fifteen percent - and in most tests, somewhere in the middle of that range. That means that if the two cards are available at a similar price, the RTX 2070 is the obvious favourite - even though aftermarket and overclocked GTX 1080 cards could narrow the gap in performance somewhat. However, this is just one piece of the puzzle - and everything else suggests that picking up an RTX card makes more sense than a last-generation GTX alternative.

Firstly, the RTX 2070 has just arrived, so its drivers may not be as mature as the GTX 1080. We could well see a little bit of extra performance squeezed from this card as its drivers continue to be developed. Secondly, DLSS support could mean double-digit frame-rate boosts in supported games on the RTX 2070 compared to traditional anti-aliasing - and that would widen the performance gap between these two cards considerably. Finally, more modern engines seem to like the RTX cards better, and now that the RTX 2070 is actually on the market, you can count on game developers taking advantage of its new shader models and other architectural improvements to further improve performance.

While all of these factors aren't guaranteed to be impactful on their own, combined they suggest that RTX cards are likely to only become more performant in the future - so paying a little extra for an RTX 2070 over a GTX 1080 should make sense. The only question is this - how much is that promise of extra performance worth to you?

RTX 2070 vs GTX 1080: price and availability

With that, let's take a look at pricing and availability. At the moment, the RTX 2070 is widely available online in most territories, but the GTX 1080 is experiencing unit shortages that are pushing up prices significantly.

Taking a quick look at Amazon in the US and UK, the cheapest RTX 2070 cards are available for around £430/$480, while new GTX 1080 cards are dearer from around £516/$540. It's a similar situation at other retailers, too, with the GTX 1080 usually costing at least 50 domestic currency units more than its RTX replacement.

Of course, it's also possible to buy used, open box or refurbished cards - and here, you could be able to find a GTX 1080 for at least £100/$100 off new prices and availability is improved too. That could be handy if you're working to a strict budget, but you'll have to weigh the pros and cons yourself of going with used hardware.

At the current prices, the RTX 2070 is the obvious choice, and even if the two cards are available at nearly the same price, the newer RTX model is still a sensible pick as you get anywhere from 5 to 15 per cent more raw performance than the GTX 1080. Factor in the promise of real-time ray tracing, DLSS, single-cable VR and so on, and the RTX 2070 is a no-brainer.

The thermal design power (TDP) is the maximum amount of power the cooling system needs to dissipate. A lower TDP typically means that it consumes less power.

A wider bus width means that it can carry more data per cycle. It is an important factor of memory performance, and therefore the general performance of the graphics card.

Newer versions of GDDR memory offer improvements such as higher transfer rates that give increased performance.

Error-correcting code memory can detect and correct data corruption. It is used when is it essential to avoid corruption, such as scientific computing or when running a server.

Ports

Devices with a HDMI or mini HDMI port can transfer high definition video and audio to a display.

Newer versions of HDMI support higher bandwidth, which allows for higher resolutions and frame rates.

More HDMI ports mean that you can simultaneously connect numerous devices, such as video game consoles and set-top boxes.

Nvidia launched its Turing GPU architecture roughly a year ago, and since then has fleshed out its lineup with non-RTX variants that lack dedicated hardware for real-time ray tracing, and more recently refreshed its GeForce RTX series with upgraded Super models. This means you have more options to wade through in search of the best graphics card for your setup and budget.

Depending on how much you are looking to spend and what level of performance you are aiming for, you might be wondering if it's better to plunk down a wad of cash on a GeForce RTX 2070 (either the standard model or the Super variant) or a previous generation GeForce GTX 1080. All three launched with a $499 MSRP, putting these cards on seemingly equal footing. But are they really?

The quick and dirty answer is no, they are not, but of course things are more complicated than a simple 'yes' or 'no' response could convey. That is why we have decided to compare these GPU heavyweights, in terms of features, performance, and actual street pricing. After all, these are the things that ultimately matter when buying a graphics card (or any hardware component, really), in order to make an informed buying decision. So, let's get started.

Difference between RTX and GTX

Model names are sometimes meaningless, though that is not the case when comparing Nvidia's RTX and GTX nomenclatures. All RTX cards feature dedicated RT cores designed to muscle through real-time ray tracing chores. More recently, Nvidia updated its driver stack to also support real-time ray tracing on GTX cards from the current Turing crop and previous generation Pascal GPUs, but the lack of dedicated hardware makes it largely academic—simply put, if you are interested in enabling ray tracing in games, you should only be eyeballing an RTX card.

GeForce RTX cards also support something called deep learning super sampling (DLSS). In games that support DLSS, it is supposed to improve performance without degrading image quality. It does this by using high quality 64x sampled images to train a deep learning network. In theory, this should allow a game to render at a lower resolution, and then upscale and anti-alias the result in real time with images that look about the same as the native resolution with temporal AA. We've seen mixed results, though.

In our opinion, DLSS support is not sufficient reason alone to pick an RTX card over a GTX model, all other things being equal. Ray tracing support is arguably a bit more interesting (some may feel the opposite is true). The caveat with ray tracing is that it's still not widely employed, though the list of games is growing.

If you are wanting to enable ray tracing in games that support it, however, the RTX 2070 series is where things get interesting, particularly with the Super variant. The only cheaper options in the RTX family are the RTX 2060 Super and RTX 2060. The RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2070 are burlier cards with more muscle to throw at ray-traced workloads.

Let's get technical

Although there are a handful of GeForce GTX cards that are based on Nvidia's current generation Turing GPU, the GTX 1080 is not one of them—it features a previous generation Pascal GPU. Jarred posted a deep dive of the Turing architecture, in case you're curious about what all it brings to the table.

Architecture aside, here is a rundown of the specs of the RTX 2070 Super, 2070, and GTX 1080:

The amount of memory (8GB) is the same across the board, though the RTX cards employ GDDR6 memory chips, while the GTX 1080 uses GDDRX5. 

Looking at the clockspeeds, the GTX 1080 outpaces the RTX 2070, both in base and boost frequencies. It also has more CUDA cores. Nvidia addresses this with the RTX 2070 Super, which has nearly the same base clock and a faster boost clock, and matches the GTX 1080 in CUDA cores.

Don't get too caught up in all this, though. As we will see in a bit, the Turing architecture is stronger than Pascal, and performance shifts in favor of both RTX 2070 cards in most situations. This is ultimately what matters, so let's get right to it.

Performance

Jarred has run extensive benchmarks on these cards, and at a variety of resolutions and visual quality settings. How much faster is the key to this comparison, though, and whether it makes sense to stick with Pascal or bump up to Turing.

At 1080p, the difference in performance between an RTX 2070 and GTX 1080 is largely negligible. The 11 game average at medium settings shows the RTX 2070 being about 6 percent faster. That nudges up to around 8 percent when running games on ultra settings.

There is a bigger gap between the RTX 2070 Super and GTX 1080. It's closer to a 16 percent difference at medium settings, and around 17 percent on ultra settings. When you start getting into double-digit percentage differences, the gap in performance can matter, depending on the game (and in terms of longevity).

Similar trends can be observed at 1440p, but where the rubber meets the road is when looking at 4K performance. At ultra settings, the GTX 1080 averaged 40.8 fps (cumulative across 11 games), versus 45.3 fps for the RTX 2070 and 50 fps for the RTX 2070 Super.

None of these are ideal options for gaming at 4K, but the GTX 1080 is obviously the worst of the bunch, dipping to around 30 fps in some games. That is uncomfortably close to the line of being unplayable.

Price and value

Jarred noted in his review of the RTX 2070 Super that it is a great option for people looking to build a high-end gaming PC. Indeed, it places at the top of the charts for the FPS per unit of money spent on a complete PC, and the RTX 2070 is not far behind. Both cards are less enticing from a value standpoint when looking only at the graphics card, and not the cost of a system as a whole.

For this comparison, though, we're not evaluating the bang-for-buck proposition among all graphics cards. This is a showdown between the RTX 2070 cards and the previous generation GTX 1080. That's also what makes things tricky.

When the GTX 1080 launched, it was a $499 graphics card. And now? New models on Newegg cost upwards of $735, and several hover around the $1,000 mark. Yeah, no. We can say absolutely and emphatically that it makes zero sense to pay those kinds of prices for a GTX 1080. Zip. Zilch.

Pricing is far more reasonable on the second-hand market. Over on eBay, for example, you can expect to pay around $300—some go for a little less and others go for a bit more. Meanwhile, new RTX 2070 cards on Newegg typically go for $449 and up, and the RTX 2070 Super sells for $499 and up.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that a used card might have been toiling away mining cryptocurrency 24 hours a day for a year or more. The GTX 1080 was a desirable GPU during the crypto craze, and a used card could have conceivably been run at full bore for long stretches.

Final word

What this really comes down to is if you are willing to chance a used (and potentially heavily used) GTX 1080. If you are, you can sometimes find them selling for less than $300. Compared to $449 and up for an RTX 2070 and $499 and up for an RTX 2070 Super, the value proposition is far higher. There's not enough separation in performance to warrant spending $150 to $200 more on a 2070 series card, and there are not enough games that support ray tracing to tip the scales, either.

Comparing used to new is sort of apples and oranges, though. Who knows how hard a used GTX 1080 has been driven, and because Nvidia and its hardware partners are phasing out Pascal, brand new models are mostly way overpriced.

Bottom line: unless you are comfortable with the risk of buying a used card, the RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2070 are better upper midrange (or lower high-end) options than the GTX 1080. The Super model is especially intriguing, as it offers close to RTX 2080 performance for less money.
